Education › Re: How And Why Did Newton Develop Such Complicated Mathematics? by Calbarian(m): 1:37pm On Jul 23, 2015 |
You can't even count the number of letters there are in "maths" Joavid: For many people, there’s a certain four letter word that strikes great fear into their hearts: maths Mathematics has a reputation for being a subject of the elite–a terrible, confusing, jumbled mess of illogical expressions and rules, which many people just give up trying to decipher at some point. Nevertheless, many students of mathematics (formal and informal), persevere through years of algebra and arithmetic to find themselves facing a very different beast – Calculus
In truth, mathematics IS complicated and advanced, and it took hundreds of years to develop this language–the language that can accurately describe the universe we live in. Initially, math arose to solve problems and predict outcomes in everyday life, and as humans became more interested in how the world worked, they were faced with limitations of their current mathematical theories – which is why many people throughout history worked to create new and better models of nature, leading to advanced mathematics – here is how Newton (among others) created some of the most dreaded mathematical equations that we know today
To describe the need Newton felt for more precise mathematics, you first need a brief understanding of what math was before Newton came along and changed everything. In the ancient times (around 580-212 BC) three notable philosophers – Pythagoras, Euclid, and Archimedes – created what we know now as algebra and geometry, but still struggled to unify them. Until this point, algebra was done without the tools necessary, like a numbering system that was easy to work with (imagine doing algebra with Roman Numerals) as well as many of the symbols like the plus, minus, and multiplication/division symbols. In the late 1500s, Rene Descartes unified algebra (which was used as an analytical tool) along with the geometric shapes. He found that, a point on a plane can be described using two numbers, and from that, equations of geometric figures were born
Around the 1670’s, two great men discovered and developed calculus independently from each other. Sir Isaac Newton of England, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz of Germany, both did quite a lot of work forming a language of numbers that could accurately describe nature. It is worth noting, however, that Newton developed calculus 8 years before Gottfried, but Gottfried is known for developing modern European mathematics by introducing carefully drawn symbols and rules (many people say the equals sign ‘=’ was the work of Gottfried) – Both men will claim that the other plagiarized them for the rest of their lives, a conflict known as the “great sulk”.
So why was this new and complicated form of mathematics invented? And how does one manage to come up with such an abstract idea? Newton was foremost a physicist, and in his day, he tackled many difficult issues in physics, probably the most famous of these issues is gravity. Newton is known for developing the laws of motion and gravitation, which undoubtedly led to his work in calculus. When trying to describe how an object falls, Newton found that the speed of the object increases every split second and that no mathematics currently used could describe the object at any moment in time.
Another tale of Newton’s reasoning is that a colleague of his asked “Why are the orbits of the planets in an ellipse?”, to which, Newton took some time to ponder, and came back with the fact that the ellipses are, in fact, sections of cones, and armed with calculus, he could describe exactly how these sections behaved. These were the types of questions (in conjunction with the fact that Cambridge University -where Newton studied – was closed due to numerous outbreaks of the plague) that drove Newton to expand on mathematics and develop the concepts of differential and integral calculus.
One may ask “how does one invent a new form of mathematics” this answer is quite simple; Isaac Newton forced relationships between physical phenomena and the mathematics of the day. Through trial and error (and quite a bit of ingenuity), Newton saw the need for a whole new math, and this came from his conceptual understanding of physics. More simply, Newton already knew the concepts of calculus because he was describing gravity and planets; it was a matter of writing it down and showing proof that it works.
Nobody would claim that Newton wasn’t a brilliant man, but calculus has been refined for over 300 years with many features added (like limits, which make everything easier), meaning that no longer does one have to be a genius to understand it. I want to make a point that, a student who has a concept of algebra already knows more than Newton did when he invented calculus, and in fact, calculus was born out of what we know as geometry and algebra. Math students of the present day should not fear, calculus is not just for the elite, not just for the genius, but for anyone who has the time and discipline to learn it. I fight for equal treatment of all mathematics, let’s take away the stigma of calculus |

Politics › US Plans To Force Nigeria To Accept Same S3x Marriage by Calbarian(op): 6:05pm On Jul 16, 2015 |
http://www.sirkenayo.com/us-plans-to-force-nigeria-to-accept-same-s3x-marriage/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitterAs President Muhammadu Buhari prepares to meet with his United States counterpart, Barack Obama, in the White House next Monday, the US government is expected to make another case asking the Nigerian government to repeal its law against same-sex unions. Making this known Monday, the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, stated that the US would continue to pressure Nigeria until it legalises same-sex marriage. According to the Nigerian Pilot, Thomas-Greenfield revealed America’s plans yesterday during a live-web chat with journalists in Washington DC. US recently legalised gay marriage, a development, which sparked off mixed reactions across the globe. Thomas-Greenfield, who said the US had adopted the protection of the rights of same-sex people as part of its foreign policies, vowed that Washington would continue to mount and sustain pressure on Nigeria and other countries to reverse their laws against lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender (LGBT) community. She said: “As a government, it is one of the highest priorities and strongest values that discrimination against anyone based on their sexual orientation and gender identity is wrong. We believe human rights should be available to everybody. “As a policy, we will continue to press the government of Nigeria, as well as other governments which have provided legislation that discriminate against the LGBT community.” Thomas-Greenfield, who did not agree that pressuring Nigeria to reverse the anti-gay law amounted to interference, said Nigeria and Uganda have the hardest legislation on the gaycommunity. She said: “This is very much a work in progress, but I think you will agree with me that the law in Nigeria really went far in discriminating against this community but also people who associate with them. So, we will continue to press the government, to press the legislature to change these laws and provide human rights for all Nigerian people regardless of their sexual orientation.” Thomas-Greenfield was optimistic that the US would win the fight to protect the LGBT community. She continued: “With what is happening in the US, you can determine how far we are willing to go. We strongly believe human rights for all people and we are particularly opposed to legislation that actually targets thegay community for discrimination. “So we are prepared to push this as a policy, not just in Africa but across the world.”

Mogidi: Apart from the military officials, Buhari has only appointed News men, Garba Shehu, Adesina and Ogunlesi. This government is going to rule through Twitter, this is why it was wrong to vote an illiterate.
Twitter may have won Buhari the presidency, twitter can't sustain his grip on power though. I just came across this and I must admit, I'm a bit perturbed: This message is for Nigerians whether PDP or APC apologist. Christian or Muslim. Let's pause for a minute and think about the way we fight corruption in Nigeria. Last week, The former governor of Jigawa state was arraigned by EFCC alongside his children for receiving N1.35 billion kickback from a government contractor. Few days later, he was flown to Abuja and granted bail on self recognition!. So he is a free man now at least till next 7years, because case no dey finish here till minimum of 7years. Now, calculate what tax payers are losing: 1. N1.35B + 2. EFCC officers salary + time spent on the matter that could have been used more judiciously + 3. Legal fees. Keyamo and Co will collect nothing less than N50m to prosecute any case. At the end of the day, the court will give a verdict that this man is not guilty of N1.35b fraud then he will go home on self recognition. So the more you steal the more you will be recognized as VIP in Nigeria. Is this type of anti corruption war making sense at all. Please let us think and act now. |

Moral of the story: just purchase the land anyway you can and come back to develop it later.
Back to the Topic This JAMB abi what is their name can be ridiculous at times. Why are we always going for lower and lower standards every time? Is anything wrong in us raising the bar? And to think with 245 in UME and 272 in Post-UME I was denied admission to study OAU in 2008 leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Everything that happens to human is God. God simply showed me, why go for the second best when you can actually have the best. Now a UI graduate by God's grace. UI, OAU, UNILAG I know will never go for anything less than 200. 200 doesn't even guarantee you admission in these schools. The FG should simply make 180, 150 or even 120 the cut-off mark for northern students and for northern universities only. Please help us raise the bar in the South. If you wake me up without prior information and ask me to sit for UTME, I'll surely score more than 180. Mtcheew, no wonder I came across corpers who couldn't write or speak correct English language. So annoying. Imagine a fellow corper in my PPA teaching commerce writing "commacial bank" as a type of bank. Education is a joke in this country. Further to my previous post, it's my opinion that the real job of the PDP began on the day PMB won the recent presidential elections.
The APC is filled with human beings, and by extension, they are prone to errors. Sometimes, these errors are concealed. At other times, they're condoned. Once in a while, they may be exposed.
They may be planning errors, errors in judgement and/or errors in action. Whatever their nature, it behoves upon the rest of us Nigerians to guard our fledgling democracy in every logical way possible. Identifying and treating these errors is a very important part of our growth as a nation.
I think the PDP should be more constructive in their criticisms of the current administration so their future releases could be received with the amount of seriousness that they deserve. Casting at straws and counterproductive criticisms won't do anyone any good.
The PDP is currently the greatest option Nigeria can offer as per an institution saddled with the task of keeping the APC in line with the tenets of the oaths they swore to abide by in leading the country.
The PDP should focus on its job and allow the APC focus on theirs. |

i am major on songwriting feild,so i can totally confirm it,its true. The lyrical content that made wizkid is grossly missing in most of his songs today so I'm not surprised that someone else did the penning. On the contrary, Skales' songs have a lot of that content but it doesn't stop there. To turn a good song into a hit, he needs more than content. I hope he can find the missing link. |
