The Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG has stated that only a referendum on Biafra for the Igbos will guarantee a peaceful existence for Nigeria.

In a statement on Monday signed by the spokesperson, Abdulazeez Suleiman, the group disclosed that “only a referendum for Igbo exit from Nigeria can provide final guarantee for a peaceful Nigeria.”

The statement read in part; “We insist on a referendum to take place across the country to agree on an immediate and permanent exit of the Igbo from Nigeria.”

“With this, we wish to stress the need for Nigerians and Nigerian authorities and the International Community to consider the above-stated facts and urgently come to the reality that it is is no longer realistic for us to continue condoning and accommodating the ever resurgent unreasonable and unacceptable actions perpetrated against Nigerians collectively by the Igbo that involve taking up arms and declaring war two times previously.”

“And in the event that the minority Igbo leaders persist in their current denial, we suggest that a referendum be organised, administered, and supervised by the United Nations, the African Union, and ECOWAS in the South East with only its indigenes taking part in the process to determine who actually holds the most influence between them and Kanu.”

“All Igbo must leave the territory of Nigeria and assemble in their designated enclave for the purpose of the referendum during which period no further contacts should be experienced between them and the rest of Nigeria so as not to lead to any interference in the process.”

The group also stated that the Federal government will not interfere in any part of the referendum. The group rubbished claims of marginalization as being the basis for secession from Nigeria, stating that the Igbos have more than a fair share in the affairs of Nigeria.

“Contrary to the Igbo leaders’ claims of marginalization premised on falsehood and deceit, records of history show that the Igbo, having produced the first post-independence president of Nigeria, also had the first military Head of State in the person of Aguiyi Ironsi.”

“Despite the more than a fair share of an economic and political advantage enjoyed by the Igbo, they continue to incite their youth to violence against other Nigerian ethnicities and to prepare them for war against the Nigerian state using distorted versions of the right to self-determination and false claims of marginalization.”

OPTION C
This option emphasizes self-determination for the Igbo nation or ala-Igbo. A few Igbo-Biafrans have argued that Biafra lost the Nigeria Civil War of 1967 to 1970 because of sabotage by some of the non-Igbo Biafran ethnic groups. They site the prevailing fears of Igbo-domination and Igbo-phobia amongst non-Igbo peoples who accuse Biafrans of eyeing crude oil and access to the sea. They warn that even if Biafra successfully breaks away from Nigeria, it would descend into another war of the ethnic minorities of the Niger-Delta versus the Igbo majority. On that note, they make a case for a one hundred percent homogeneous Igbo nation comprising the five Igbo states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo in addition to the Anioma area (in Delta state) and the Igweocha area (in Rivers state). They believe that the Igbo language would flourish as it would be the official language in a homogeneous Igbo nation as opposed to an English lingua franca in Biafra. They deemphasize the landlocked nature of this proposed homogeneous Igbo nation by pointing out other landlocked countries around the world that prosper despite being landlocked.

OPTION D
Herein lies a proposition for a South Nigeria Republic. They support the disintegration of Nigeria but only into two countries. Perhaps first mooted by Major Gideon Orkar in his 1990 coup speech where he decried the marginalization, oppression and enslavement of the Middle-Belt and the South by the North and proclaimed the North excised from Nigeria. Libyan leader Gaddafi echoed a similar sentiment, sometime in 2010, when he suggested that Nigeria be split into two along religious lines of a largely Muslim North and a largely Christian South if there is to be sustainable peace. According to the main proponents of this idea, the South Nigeria Republic would comprise of the South-West, South-East, South-South and the North-Central geopolitical zones. In essence, they plead that after the disintegration of Nigeria, the South and Middle Belt should remain together as one country called South Nigeria instead of splitting into three or four smaller countries like Oodua, Biafra, Niger-Delta etc.









In summary,
Option A is for a conferederate zoo or a restructured zoo.
Option B is for Biafra and the breakup of the zoo.
Option C is for a homogeneous Igbo nation encircled by the zoo.
While Option D is for a South Nigeria Republic splitting the zoo into two.

I have tried to be as objective as possible in presenting these four options which were not originally formulated by me. Pardon me if you noticed my undeniable preference for Option B of Biafra by the Biafrans and for the Biafrans. Now, I must leave you to make your own choice.

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) says the Igbo should be allowed to secede from Nigeria if that is what the south-east wants.

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) are campaigning for the secession of the south-east from Nigeria.

IPOB was formed in 2012 by Nnamdi Kanu, while MASSOB was founded in 1999 by Ralph Uwazuruike.

Addressing journalists after a closed-door meeting held in Abuja on Monday, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, spokesman of the forum, said the agitation by the Igbo for secession has become widespread, adding that the leaders in the state appear to support the decision.

Baba-Ahmed advised that standing in the way of the agitators will only worsen the insecurity in the country.

“This nation has had to fight a terrible war to preserve the country. The north had paid its dues in that war, as indeed it did in many ways throughout the history of the country. Under our current circumstances, no Nigerian should welcome another war to keep the country together,” he said.

“The forum has arrived at the difficult conclusion that if support for secession among the Igbo is as widespread as it is being made to look, and Igbo leadership appears to be in support of it, then the country should be advised not to stand in its way.

“It will not be the best choice for the Igbo or Nigerians to leave a country we have all toiled to build and a country we all have the responsibility to fix, but it will not help a country already burdened with failures on its knees to fight another war to keep the Igbo in Nigeria.”

The forum warned that attacks and killings of northerners, federal government employees, and destruction of national assets must stop, adding that those involved must be arrested and prosecuted.

The northern elders also noted that until the Igbo decide whether it wants to secede or remain part of Nigeria, the law applies to it, as the federal and state governments have a responsibility to enforce the law and protect citizens.

They also supported the calls for northerners who are exposed to harassment and violence, to consider relocating to the north.

They, however, advised that all Igbo and other ethnic groups residing in the north should be accorded the usual hospitality and security.

An opinion leader in the Niger Delta, Mr. Andy Wabali, has clarified that the Ikwere of Rivers State, are not Igbo irrespective of language similarities.
He also said it is wrong to describe the Ikwere as Igbo, saying the ethnic group is distinct from the Igbo ethnic group.
In a chat with Vanguard, Wabali, backed his argument with contemporary examples in the country.
His words: “Clearly, the Ikwere in Rivers State which I am one of them are a very distinct people. We are very different from the Igbo. Yes, there are similarities in language but that does not make us Igbo.

We bear Igbo names like Nnamdi, which has no meaning in my language for instance, when the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was the President, some of our people were given the names. Even Goodluck J
“That does not make him Igbo. My people are not Igbo. Culturally, we are different. We might be in the same language group, but that does not make us Igbo. Don’t forget that Igbo language was a language of trade just like the Hausa and Yoruba languages that were used as trading languages in the past. People might be describing us as Igbo, but that is an error because we are different from Igbo.

For instance, in the United Kingdom, the Scottish people are not English, the Irish are not English but they all speak English. In Belgium, the Belgians are not French but they speak French. [/b]Because most people do not read, they take everything they hear hook line and sinker. Most Nigerians do not read. There is intellectual laziness even on the part of our historians. Some just generalize and write reports that can’t be substantiated. [b]We belong to the language group that cut across the Bight of Benin and even Southern Africa.

“We are Ikwere people. We are distinct in culture and many areas. Our distinctiveness can be seen in our kinship and anthropology. When people talk about dialects, there are no dialects of English language. So the issue of dialect does not come in. The French language is embedded in English just the way the German language is embedded in English, but these are two different nationalities with different identities. Since Igbo is a language of trade, it is widely spoken just like the Hausa language.

Today, we even have a wrong coinage, Hausa-Fulani, but there is nothing like Hausa-Fulani. You are either Hausa or Fulani. In the Niger Delta, we have a lot of ethnic nationalities. The Urhobo and Isoko are two different ethnic groups. There languages are similar but they are not the same ethnic group. Isoko people are Isoko people while the Urhobo people are Urhobo. It is in that same manner that Ikwere people are Ikwere while Igbo are Igbo.”
