A ‘healing church’ that promotes an industrial bleach solution as a cure for coronavirus (COVID-19) has been fined the sum of $151,200 (N38,354,904) by the Australian drugs regulator.
The church, Miracle Mineral Supplement or Solution (MMS), is said to part of an international church group.
It was learnt that MMS Australia wrote to United States President, Donald Trump promoting the bleach as COVID-19 cure.
According to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) on Wednesday, the church was fined for selling products that pose serious health risks.
The regulator said it had issued 12 infringement notices “for the alleged unlawful advertising’’ of the Miracle Mineral Supplement or Solution (MMS) on the church’s website.
The church group has claimed that chlorine dioxide, an industrial bleach it sells as MMS, is a “miracle cure” for COVID-19, as well as autism, acne, cancer, diabetes and other ailments.
The solution has since been removed from the Australian website.
TGA said in the statement it was concerned about the harmful effects that can be caused by the ingestion of MMS.
It also published an updated safety alert to warn consumers about untrue claims made online about the solution for the treatment, cure, prevention or alleviation of diseases.
“There is no clinical, scientifically-accepted evidence showing that MMS can cure or alleviate any disease.
“The use of MMS can result in nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and severe dehydration, which in some cases can result in hospitalisation,” TGA said.
The infringement notices were issued due to alleged contraventions subject to TGA rules and regulation because MMS Australia had promoted several products as being for therapeutic uses.

Mrs Otasowie Oshodin, on Wednesday handed over the reins of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), as the Registrar and Secretary to Council of the University.
This was announced in a statement by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the university, Benedicta Ehanire, made available to Global Times on Wednesday.
According to the statement, Mr Clarkson Ehigiator, Senior Deputy Registrar, School of Post-Graduate Studies, is to act as Registrar of the university.
“Ehigiator replaced Oshodin, in acting capacity, pending the appointment of a substantive Registrar by the institution’s Governing Council,” the statement said.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Lilian Salami, described Oshodin, who served the university for five years, as a seasoned administrator.
Salami said Oshodin would be remembered for her equanimity and candour, and wished her well in her future endeavours.
Global Times reports that Mrs Oshodin is wife of a former vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Godwin Osayuki Oshodin.
There was panic in Edo State on Wednesday as security operatives intercepted a truckload of goods which also had over 60 Northerners hidden in it; amid rising coronavirus cases in the state.
According to information reliably gathered by Global Times, the truck was coming from Kano State and was intercepted at Ekpoma.
The truck was intercepted by a joint security operatives team led by the Edo State Taskforce on COVID-19.
Tests conducted on the smuggled passengers shows that 15 out of the over 60 passengers tested positive for the deadly virus, a source told Global Times.
“A call was immediately placed to the LG chairman of Esan Central and West who in turn called the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki, who ordered that all the passengers should be taken to Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) for proper testing.”
The truck driver after apprehension confessed to the taskforce that some of his passengers already highlighted at Okpella and Auchi, near Edo.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Patrick Okundia, who confirmed the development to Global Times in a statement, said they were actually 75 travellers.
“The driver of the truck with registration number LSF 679 XZ, John Monday, said he had just finished delivering his goods and decided to pick up the passengers who he charged between N500 and N700 on his way from Kano State en-route Ogun State.
“The management of the ISTH are screening and testing them. We are communicating and exchanging reports. The essence is to screen these persons and get them tested after which they will be allowed back into their truck to continue their journey and Police officers will escort them out of the state.”
He said another 26 travellers in a truck were stopped at AGIP Junction along Sapele Road and moved to the Stella Obasanjo Hospital for screening and testing to ascertain their COVID-19 status before they were let off to continue their journey.
“We are going to have their records well-documented. We have been directed to get them back into their truck, and direct security men to escort them out of Edo State. It is until they get far away from Edo State that they will be allowed to continue their journey.”
The commissioner noted that the cargo truck that was conveying the 26 passengers and the driver, was loaded with bags of salt.
He added that the truck was travelling from Rivers State and was waved down by security operatives at the AGIP Junction along Sapele Road, Benin City.
Meanwhile, management of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma would not be held responsible if any of its students or staff gets infected by the deadly virus “as the university has warned all students to vacate the vicinity to their parents house,” said the institution’s spokesman, Mr Edward Aihvebe.
According to NCDC, as of 11:40 p.m. May 5, 2020, there are 65 total COVID-19 cases in Edo and with this recent development, the cases may rise to 80 confirmed cases.
The continuous increase in number of infections has risen due to the increased capacity for testing across the country.

Police in Lagos have begun questioning music video director, Clarence Peters, over the death of dancer and choreographer, Love Divines, popularly known as Picture Kodak.
The professional dancer died last Wednesday at Peters’ Omole Phase One residence.
The music director is being detained at the State Criminal investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Yaba.
Kodak was electrocuted when she received a call on her mobile phone while it was charging.
She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead.
The young dancer was at Peters’ residence along with others in preparation for a video shoot.

Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has appointed as coronavirus ambassador, Femi Adeoye, the man who publicly reprimanded his son who travelled to Lagos despite his warning not to embark on the trip.
The video of Mr Adeoye refusing to cover up for his son over fear of contracting and spreading COVID-19 in Ekiti State went viral after it was shot days ago.
Adeoye said in the video that he would not take the young man home because his house had no space where his son could isolate himself.
He urged the authorities to take charge and keep his son under close observation.
However, Mr Fayemi met Adeoye on Thursday and commended him for the action as the state battles to contain the ravaging disease.
A Twitter thread by the government read: “Governor Kayode Fayemi @kfayemi has appointed Mr. Adeoye as a COVID-19 Response Ambassador in Ekiti State. He will help to propagate the message as a member of the COVID-19 Task Force @Ekiti_COVID19 in the State.
“By, in accordance with existing regulations, denying his son entry into his household having travelled from places under Federal lockdown against his fatherly advice, Mr. Adeoye has proved to be a worthy ambassador of Ekiti State resolve to end the #COVID19 pandemic.
“The Government and the good people of Ekiti State are very proud of this chivalrous act of courage and principle which are the hallmarks of the Ekiti person.
“Mr. Adeoye represents the kind of self-discipline, selflessness, and sense of collective responsibility that Ekiti State and Nigeria need desperately today to progress.
“Ekiti State will in future recognise Mr. Adeoye’s valour as an example of the rebirth of Ekiti Values Orientation which is the central focus of Governor Kayode Fayemi’s @kfayemi administration.”
Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Government on Wednesday ordered the suspension of a security officer who recorded the video.
The security officer, while recording the video, made fun of Adeoye, urging him to go home with his son, after he claimed the young man had been tested and certified free of COVID-19.
The officer was suspended for “incompetence and highhandedness” as the man’s temperature was only checked with a thermometer.
