Izu Joseph , a Central Defender with Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan, was allegedly shot on Sunday by suspected Joint Task Force officers in Okaki community, in the Ahoada West area of Rivers State, on arriving the state to visit his family. Joseph’s father, Reuben Izu , and some residents stated this on Monday. Speaking with PUNCH on the telephone on Monday, Reuben said: He was in Okaki with his wife before he died. He had planned to come to Port Harcourt where I live with his daughter. He went to the jetty area where we usually swim to have a quick shower on Sunday. It was while he was there that the men of the JTF raided the place and everybody ran helter-skelter, including Joseph. When the soldiers saw them running they began shooting sporadically and one of the bullets hit Joseph in the leg. As he was groaning with pain, one of the JTF men walked up to him and shot him a second time at a close range despite Joseph’s plea that he was a footballer on holiday in Okaki. His mobile phone and identity card were seized from him and we have not been able to retrieve them till now. The soldiers didn’t allow anybody to help him until he lost a lot of blood. After they left, he was taken to the hospital where he died due to loss of blood . A statement by the club’s media official, Jubril Arowolo, and its general manager, Rasheed Balogun said that sources claimed that he was shot with two of his friends who sustained injuries. “The management of 3SC commiserates with the family of one of our players, Joseph Izu, who was killed on Sunday. He joined 3SC in the 2013/2014 season and was on the bench in the club’s last match of the season against Abia Warriors in Umuahia. He was a dedicated player who gave his best for the good of the club. We are going to miss him greatly. We pray to God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss,” the statement read in part. The spokesman for 2 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Hamisu Hassan who is the commander, 2 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, on Tuesday, Said shooting stars of Ibadan player, Mr. Joseph Izu who was shot on Sunday by operatives of the Joint Military Task Force because he was near a cultists’ shrine when he died. And investigation was still ongoing to ascertain what the 3sc central midfielder was doing at the shrine. Brig. Gen. Hassan explained that Izu was killed when troops, who were on a “confidence building patrol”, moved into cultists’ hideout in Okaki village, adding that the place the footballer was found was isolated. The First solar-powered airport in Africa Is the South African airport situated in the small town of George, where 150,000 coastal residents live. It has over 2,000 solar panels which generate more-than-enough electricity to power control towers, escalators, ATM machines, restaurants, baggage carousels and check-in desks. The power plant generates so much electricity in-fact its excess is fed back into the municipal power grid and dispersed to households throughout the province. And during September this green initiative reportedly supplied almost 250 extra homes with power. George Airport was built in apartheid-era South Africa in 1977 for government officials, but now serves as a hub for some 700,000 passengers and numerous deliveries – from homegrown flowers to oysters. Since the solar panels were unveiled back in September it has reduced its carbon emissions by 1,229 tonnes – equivalent to 103,934 litres of fuel. Their electricity bill has also been been slashed by 40% as a result. Airport manager Brenda Voster said the environmental value of the project is priceless but it may take five to 10 years to pay off the initial 16 million rand (N350 million). Because power surges are a frequent occurrence (which can break computers) in South Africa, solar is also saving people money on electrical goods. In short, this may not offset the detrimental emissions generated by long international flights, but it is certainly a step in the right direction. And weather conditions in George are quite temperamental, which means other, much sunnier places should be able to adopt a similar initiative with ease. http://naijalabel..com.ng/2016/10/firstsolar-airport-in-africa-unveiled.html
