PoliticsRe: A Historical Reflection On Yoruba - Igbo Tensions by callthefred: 11:12am On Aug 07, 2025
Osnuf34:
Lest We Forget: A Historical Reflection on Yoruba-Igbo Tensions

Many people today speak of betrayal and mistrust between the Yoruba and Igbo, but few understand the deeper context or the actual conversations that took place among the leaders of both ethnic groups. I had the rare privilege though just a young observer who had learned “how to wash his hands” of sitting in on some of these meetings between Yoruba and Igbo elders.

One such memorable gathering took place in Owerri around 1989. There, I listened in awe as Uncle Bola Ige and other Yoruba leaders addressed claims made by some prominent Igbo figures, including Chief Mbakwe and R.B. Okafor. The accusation? That Chief Obafemi Awolowo had promised to support the Igbo in seceding from Nigeria, and then betrayed them by not following through.

Bola Ige responded with clarity and fire. Turning to Mbakwe, he asked directly:
"You were present at the meeting between Awolowo and Ojukwu, as I was. Did Awo ever make that promise?"
He then turned to two other Yoruba and two Igbo leaders who were also present at that historical meeting.
"I have the transcripts," he warned. None of the Igbo elders refuted him.

Awolowo, according to Ige, had never promised to follow the East into secession. What he did say was:
“If the Igbo are ever driven out of Nigeria, the Yoruba will take it seriously and reassess their own position.”
The room fell quiet. The accusation crumbled in the face of truth. The Igbo leaders did not deny this version of events.

Then came Bola Ige’s thunderous retort:
“Who are you to accuse the Yoruba of betrayal?”
He laid out a powerful chronology:

1. At Independence, Awolowo offered a joint NCNC-AG government Zik as Prime Minister, Awo as Finance Minister. Negotiations were ongoing when suddenly Zik announced a coalition with the NPC instead. The East aligned with the North to crush the West, jailing Awo and his allies.

2. In 1965, the West and East agreed to boycott the election. They reached consensus in the early hours, but by morning, the Igbo broke ranks and voted while the Yoruba held the line.

3. In 1979, post-election negotiations for a Yoruba-Igbo coalition (UPN-NPP) were underway when the NPP suddenly entered a coalition with the North’s NPN without notice.

4. In 1983, the same betrayal occurred. Yet Awolowo still sought unity. He met Zik again in Benin, pleading that only a Yoruba-Igbo alliance could rescue Nigeria. The meeting ended inconclusively, and again the East returned to align with the North.

With visible emotion, Uncle Bola continued:
“We can go on and on. But let me ask you: how many Igbo have been killed in Yoruba towns like Lagos, Ibadan, Akure, or Oshogbo? You thrive in our cities, build your businesses here, and attend our schools yet you call us enemies. Meanwhile, your people are regularly killed in Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, Zaria, and your shops looted. Yet you count the North as allies. If you choose to be perpetual slaves, we cannot help you.”

The silence that followed was deafening. No one interrupted him. No one challenged the facts. The Yoruba delegation stood and ended the meeting. I can only hope Chief C.O. Adebayo’s memoirs will someday detail that historic exchange further.

Key Takeaways:

A. The Yoruba have long extended a hand across the Niger. The Igbo, for decades, declined to take it until recently.

B. Many Igbo leaders of the 1970s to 1990s actively propagated the myth that Awolowo betrayed them, using it to solidify internal unity and distract from internal failures. The one common rallying point was hatred for the Yoruba.

C. Time is a great healer. Many Igbo reading this today may be learning, for the first time, that their leaders knew Awolowo never betrayed Ojukwu or the East during the Civil War.

A Call to Our Generation:

Even if our parents quarreled, should we, their children, inherit their grudges? Must we perpetuate old divisions in a Nigeria struggling for unity and growth?

It is time.
Time for a genuine handshake across the Niger.
Time to heal, to build, and to move forward together.

Apparently Zik miscalculated. How can you reject PM position to be ceremonial President? Yet our brothers from the east would claim their leaders are smart and brilliant. Make una make it make sense.

4yrs is a long time to reconfigure the country .... as evidently seen by yaradua administration

if under 2yrs, yaradua could keep fuel pump price @ low and reversed sales of national asset .. its enough testament that willingness and being intentional is all it takes ...

Mandela did great in 4yrs ... just one term thats enough testament. our leaders deliberately feign clueless, incapacity and stall just to enjoy opulence much longer
The thing is none of the candidates are really campaigning or telling how the things that can change Nigeria in 4 years. Some are even speaking against coastal road or airport reconstruction, America became successful largely due to ease of connection within their country. The candidates we have are all focused on saying they will right corruption or build roads or not waste public funds. Those are the not issues. No one can fight corruption, only a working system can do that.

What will change the country is actually having workable and sustainable programs and backing them up with law. We need a system that rewards and punish good or bad behavior. We need a system that is self sustainable.

Obj and Tinubu as governor are the only two who have actually done that. For Obj even opposition couldn't change banking reforms, pension reforms, health insurance reforms etc. On Tinubu's part, Lawma (psp), BRT have been self sustainable too. Also, his vision for the Lagos island/Eti Osa real estate axis. One could argue his successors didn't allow the plan fail but OBJ's own was top notch otherwise the country would have been in ruins.

Yar'adua reversing the sale of assets set us back and even reversing the removal of fuel subsidies was a No. We need total deregulation and that will force prices down not govt controlling prices. Look at Glo and MTN today, Glo destroyed monopoly and made sim available to the poor of the poorest. The more govt controls anything the more it fails.

You don't know what you're saying. He brought Obiano and imposed him on the party. Stop capping nonsense. Nothing wrong if you believe someone can continue your vision though but trying to paint him as a saint is just fraudulent.

So just like Peter Obi, the whole ADC gang are full of people with low ideas. Instead of asking for the design of the airport they are mentioning public university upgrades. Universities are now getting more funding through nelfund loan, yes not enough but for an economy to even grow you need a proper airport to enhance businesses. I'm tired of these dumb and useless opposition. They think like Obi too much. No big bold ideas at all just stupid talks.

Claiming not all Nigerians have business at the airport is very stupid and insane, is it all Nigerians that also studied in public universities..??

If Obi remains in LP, how then will his supporters become delegates in ADC?? This looks like a trap. Hopefully everyone knows what they are doing.

I think Obi don already settle for VP just doesn't want to accept that so early and planning to wait till last minute and make it look like a case of necessity.

When there's too much secrecy in an arrangement, it's obvious deceit it imminent. Na Obidients I pity.

Is is just about defeating Tinubu of having a leader with capacity? The job of a President needs someone with spine and not people will run when the mob cries. I can sincerely appreciate the strategy of Peter Obi but I still can't understand his little ideas that often lacks substances. My opinion though. As for me, this clown just wanted Obi so his Dad could be made a running mate.

How terrible to even imagine ever considering a bigot and unrepentant bloodthirsty vagabond like El Rufai. After all, none of them are my family sha, they are all just desperados for power.

Most of these issues have always been around but because voicing them out hasn't been easy with traditional media, now social media has made it worse and the political class are also feasting on it. It's just unfortunate, that those who are loudest online don't even have a set of chairs to their names.

Your comments are everywhere and nowhere. Please, next time, be concise and coherent.
On Tinubu, you mentioned PSP, LAMATA, BRT. Please, I do not know your age or place of residence. I resided in Lagos from 2000 to 2014. None, I repeat, none of those agencies were created by Tinubu. None! Tinubu left Lagos in debt, all the roads were not motorbike. Armed robbers operated daily on Akpomgbo, Third Mainland, 7 Up junction. What Tinubu created was AREA BOYS in Oshodi, Ikeja under bridge, Badagry express way after Festac, etc. Secondly, Tinubu created Alpha-Beta company. So stop telling lies. Fashola was architect of all those agencies you mentioned. When he became governor we use to call him flower planter, until he grew bold and created BRT, then started road demarcation to reduce traffic jams.
Lastly, it is hypocrisy to say that Fashola success was because he was Tinubu's protégé and not recognized that Obi also brought Obiano.
I honestly won't argue with you if you attribute Lawma, BRT et all to Fashola. That says so much about indeed when you started living in Lagos.

How exactly will any of these people do better than Tinubu? Either most of Obidients are stupid or just plain dumb. We have a constitutional democracy and FG cannot even decide what a state gets, it's a law and must be shared. Tinubu may be a clown but he has pumped in so much more resources to states and LGAs and even lawmakers are getting up to 4b on projects each across NASS yet all of them don't have anything to show for it. Who told you Obi or anyone else will force a state on how to spend their money?

Meanwhile, all the other candidates against Tinubu are people will shallow mindset, all of them are cowards who have one time or the other reversed their policies because mob out cry. If anything, subsidies removals and floating alone is bold and takes courage. Some are even so foolish they are against coastal road. Of all those shouting none of them ever created sustainable policies as governors. But Tinubu at least did Lawma psp and Lamata brt that have been self sustaining tille date.. When we talk Obi will want to claim Obiano and Soludo's sustenance of education in Anambra. The Obi who bought vehicles for public schools from innoson where there are no spare parts available. Imagine very stupid and lack of foresight.

I even enjoy how wailers are crying because I will now vote and canvass vote for that Tinubu sef
