With just one day of its week-long strike, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) reached an agreement with the Federal Government yesterday to suspend the industrial action, which grounded activities on campuses. Speaking on the development in Abuja yesterday, Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu disclosed that the government had reached an agreement with ASUU to suspend the strike. Wogu told State House Correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja that what was most important was the state of the nation. He asked: “Are we going to be able to take the challenges that will come with shutting the universities? The answer is ‘no’ and they (ASUU) believe that we should not go to that extent. Because when you go to that extent; that means that you will drive people home, the students will now go into the streets and we are complaining that most of our students are being involved in some unwholesome activities. So they promised that they will quickly look into it, and urged government to equally keep terms with the agreement”. The minister said the meeting agreed “that the implementation committee that has been in place since 2009 should be expanded to include the Minister of Finance or the representative of the Finance Minister, who is equally the coordinating minister of the economy. It will include the Minister of Labour and Productivity and the Budget Office. “The committee will look at the issues contained in that 2009 agreement and the issues that have militated against the implementation of that agreement and come up with a position that will indicate the challenges of government or indicate the challenges being faced by ASUU. “By the time we come up with it, we will be able to harmonize these issues and be able to come up with a proper position and brief Mr. President on this and we believe that if Mr. President is fully briefed, he will understand the issues at stake. The issues that were put out at the public domain, was that of implementation of 70 years of age but it is more than that”, Wogu stated. He, however, refused to mention other issues. “People should not panic because government has appealed to ASUU to suspend the strike because at this stage, the government has done a lot to make sure that we do not get to that stage. I believe that ASUU will listen to the pleas of government. It is plea that is coming from a party to the agreement and they also have made their own pleas. So it is a consolidation of pleas”. He disclosed that both parties agreed that it will not be in the interest of the nation for the nation to witness another round of closure of the universities at this time in her academic history. But the one-week warning strike, which began yesterday, crippled academic activities at both federal and state universities. The National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU, after its meeting at the University of Ibadan (UI), directed its members to down tool starting from yesterday, following the failure of the Federal Government to meet their demands. Visits to the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State University (LASU) revealed that ASUU members complied with the directive as they stayed away from work. The lecture halls were empty while some academic staff stayed away from their offices with only the non- academic on duty. ASUU’s demands include upward review of retirement age for Professors from 65 to 70, adequate funding to revitalize the university system from 2009 to 2011, progressive increase of budgetary allocations to education by 26 per cent, transfer of Federal Government property to universities, setting up of research and development units by companies, payment of earned allowances and renegotiation of the signed agreement.e issues that were put out at the public domain, was that of implementation of 70 years of age but it is more than that”, Wogu stated. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has ruled out any further negotiation with the Federal Government regarding its agitation for the implementation of agreement reached with government in connection with improvement in the nation’s educational sector, declaring at the weekend that there was no going back on its one week nationwide warning strike billed to begin today. The Southwestern arm of the union, named the Ibadan Zone met in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, on Friday to finetune strategies for the one-week action at the end of which its Coordinator, Professor Akin Ajisegiri, reiterated that the union had foreclosed any further negotiation with the government in connection with the proposed work boycott, a prelude to a full blown industrial action. “We cannot wait for another negotiation because we believe that to negotiate is being rubbished when whatever that has been negotiated at any cost is not implemented. The negotiation we had and the implementation of which started on July 1, 2009 was due on 2004. It took three years to negotiate, another one year before the agreement was signed. We negotiated on the basis of conditions of service. For you to be productive, you must be creative and the enabling environment is not being created for us to learn in Nigeria. Laboratory is dead. How can we expect a breakthrough in Nigeria. A laboratory that is supposed to accommodate 50 now has about 1,000 students. What kind of training is that? ASUU has decided that enough is enough,” the ASUU leader said. He spoke as the University of Ibadan chapter of ASUU Chairman, Dr. Ademola Aremu, asked Nigerians to hold government and not the union responsible for the strike, which, he noted, had become inevitable because of the irresponsive and irresponsible attitude of the authorities. Aremu noted that ASUU gave adequate notice of the strike, which, however, government as usual, chose to ignore. s to negotiate, another one year before the agreement was signed. Nasa says its six-tonne UARS satellite plunged to Earth over the Pacific Ocean, off the US west coast. It appears likely the decommissioned craft came down between 03:23 and 05:09 GMT - with a best estimate of 04:16. If correct, this means any debris that survived to the surface probably went into water and not on land. The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) is the largest American space agency satellite to return uncontrolled into the atmosphere in about 30 years. The fall to Earth was monitored by the Joint Space Operations Center (JSPOC) at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Its best estimate for the timing of the re-entry would have seen UARS come in at a point well out into the North Pacific. However, if UARS re-entered many minutes after 04:16, it is possible debris could have reached the American landmass. There were some unconfirmed reports of glowing wreckage moving across the sky in western Canada, but Nasa said it had yet to receive credible evidence that this was so, less still that any debris items had been found. "I've got no reports that I've seen that talk about people who think they might have recovered debris," Nick Johnson, Nasa's chief scientist for orbital debris at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, told reporters during a media teleconference. "Obviously, we're going to continue to keep our eyes and ears open, and if we receive any reports like that we'll try to go verify." Most of the 20-year-old satellite should simply have burnt up on re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, but modelling work indicated perhaps 500kg could have survived to the surface. Calculations estimated this material would have been scattered over an 800km path. Nonetheless, with more than 70% of the Earth's surface covered by water, many experts had offered the view in recent weeks that an ocean grave was going to be the most probable outcome for UARS. |

The first applicant, an American engineer, was asked how much he wanted to be paid for going. “ A million dollars”, he answered, “because I wish to donate it to M.I.T.” The next applicant, a British doctor, was asked the same question. He asked for two million dollars. “I wish to give a million to my family, he explained, “ and leave the other million for the advancement of medical research. ” The last applicant was an Igbo politician. When asked how much money he wanted, he whispered in the interviewer ’s ear, “Three million dollars.” “Why so much more than the others?” the interviewer asked. The arrested girlfriend of kidnap kingpin, Obioma Nwankwo, a.k.a Osisikankwu, simply identified as Ogochi has revealed to soldiers where her ex-lover hid his arms when he held sway as kidnap generalissimo and terrorised Abia State and Aba in particular. Osisikankwu, his girlfriend, Ogochi, alongside two others, Polycarp and Chinedu were arrested by soldiers of Operation Jubilee, the special task force in Abia from the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, on December 12 at an evil forest near the Obokwe market in Ukwa West Local Government Area. Osisikankwu and the other two male comrades-in-arms were shot dead in a crossfire with soldiers while Ogochi was taken into custody. During interrogation, the bandit ’s girlfriend said to be three months pregnant, revealed to soldiers the exact locations in Ugwuati and other evil forests where her ex-boyfriend hid thousands of arms and ammunition with which they terrorised Abia and neighbouring states. Consequent upon the revelation, according to a release by the Assistant Director, Public Relations of the 82 Div. of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, the Division ’s GOC, Maj-Gen. Sarki Yaki Bello on Wednesday last week led a cordon and search operation into the evil forests. The mop up of arms operation recorded huge success as the army recovered the following new arms from the mentioned areas: 48 empty magazine of AK 47; 3,848 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition; 538 rounds of 7.62 mm Nato; 41 expended cases of 7.62mm special ammunition; some quantity of dynamite and 3 RPG prima. |
The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mrs. Farida Waziri, might have initiated discreet moves to persuade President Goodluck Jonathan to retain her as the head of the anti-graft agency. It was gathered that Waziri had been visiting the residence of Senate President, David Mark, who is believed to be one of the President ’s men to prevail on Jonathan to halt any plans remove her from the commission. SATURDAY PUNCH investigations over the past two weeks showed that Waziri was jolted by the sudden withdrawal of the former Director of Operations of the commission, Mr. Steve Otitoju, by the police authorities and his replacement with Ibrahim Lamorde, a former DOO of the commission under Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, without any prior notice. SATURDAY PUNCH gathered the EFCC chairman was not given the opportunity to make the announcement of Lamorde ’s movement to the commission to head the operations arm. It was gathered that it was the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, who announced Larmode ’s appointment and the recall of Otitoju to his primary duty post in the police. It was learnt that Waziri initially resisted the appointment of Larmorde, but was told “it was a directive from above.” It was gathered that Otitoju might not be the only policeman on secondment to the EFCC, who might be recalled as moves were being made to replace all policemen, who had put in three years and above with fresh police detectives as a way of intensifying the campaign against corruption in the society. However, the Police Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sola Amore, denied the claim that a directive had been issued to that effect that the policemen on secondment to the EFCC, who had spent three years and above, be recalled. Our correspondent however gathered that the change of guards in the DOO office signified that more far reaching changes would soon be carried out in the commission. Larmorde, who was relieved of his position in the EFCC in 2007 by the Yar ‘Adua Administration, was the DOO under the inaugural chairman of the commission – Ribadu – now a presidential aspirant under the umbrella of the Action Congress of Nigeria. Investigations showed that Larmode was on his way to replacing the chairman of the commission because the Presidency was not happy with the state of the campaign against corruption under the leadership of Waziri. |
