CharleyCharley: Invite people to come and see how backward and disgraceful nigerians are? Interesting
I am sure that even in the developed world, there are people just as backward as Nigerians. However, we can always learn from them and they can learn from us. Or how do you see it?
revontuli: I stumbled across here when Googling something (forgot what I was even searching) and the interesting topics on the main page got me read like an addict. Reasons I loved Nairaland and stayed here:
- People's humorous attitude and funny comments, also the interesting Nigerian perspective about local and world affairs. - I see the news about Africa we never get to see in the Western media. We see only negative news and violence, peple post all kinds of positive news here. - Culture threads are hella interesting, it's refreshing to learn about all those fascinating rich cultures and traditions. - Fights never escalate to ugliness I see on facebook and western forums. Even if people fight, it gets resolved quickly, mods never have to lock threads. - You people don't ban the trolls, you just turn them into some kind of resident joke. No one takes the trolls serious and just make them into funny fools. Something white people never learned. - The banter between feminists and macho men is hilarious - I am writing an epic fantasy series, and the tribal conflict stuff is a huge source of inspiration for me. I have only academic knowledge on tribal cultures, it's priceless to see the living tribal culture with real people writing comments, the complex structure and political issues will inspire stories. - There are so many nice and positive people here!
Thank you for answering. I wish you all the best of luck with your book. Creating a universe is something that I know is brutally difficult. I once tried to write a story for a video game and I wait after a week or so.
It is nice to see someone appreciate the good side of Nigerians. I hope you keep contributing to the forum. Exchanging ideas and perspectives is something that is always good.
Please invite other people around you to join us. Diversity is something we can profit from here.
revontuli: I left for Europe. Glad I'm not living in the horribly polarized society now, things got bad since Trump's election.
My people over there have said that things are definitely hotter in the States for now. It isn't everyday that once comes across foreigners here on Nairaland. Do you mind telling me why you joined this site? I am just curious.
revontuli: Discount Tire and Auto Zone were my lifesavers in America. Make sure to get the loyalty card from both of them, it's free and comes with some benefits. Get the free customer loyalty cards from every store you shop at, some of them give you freebies and discounts as you build up the bonus points.
You said when you were in America you relied on those businesses. Are you no longer in the US?
MamaOO: Exactly. I spoke to a former classmate from Iberia who did his masters in Canada and in Geophysics . He’s struggling to find a job and coupled with the oil prices downturn, it’s not been easy at all.
Let’s just pray for the grace of God, cos all these abroad comes with their own set of wahala. Thanks for the wishes, appreciate it.
MamaOO: Yes, I understand you. But you’re still not getting the full picture. Canada gives Avenue for permanent residency BUT they just don’t hand it to you. You still have to go through a nomination program, where your province nominated you or the Canadian experience route. Part of the requirements is that you must have worked in your field of specialization for a year. It’s possibe, but hard to get that experience. The jobs are not that plentiful unlike the US and even tougher as an international student.
Another reason people opt for the US is that a lot of graduate students get tuition waiver, in form of of a research, teaching or graduate assistantship. Canada gives that, but it’s very very very limited. Jobs are plentiful in the US than Canada, and that’s s fact. Lots of Canadians actually work in the US under the H1B program too, at least I know about three who work for my husband’s company.
Either route anybody chooses tho, my advise is, do not come to the US or Canada to study a non competitive course and expect to have it good after graduation. Jobsvare hard to find if you’re an immigrant and the only way to counter that is to be in a field where the natives haven’t already saturated.
What you have said is very true. I know someone struggling under Canadian Experience route and it isn't easy at all. The area he lives is cheap but no credible jobs so he is planning to decamp to a bigger city so you are very right about Canada.
America pays once you are settled and have papers for sure, and going to study Biology can never pay. Many went and studied courses that aren't credible and french schools all over Nigeria are full of them.
The key thing is that God should just keep having mercy. It seems you and your husband are based abroad. I wish you all the best. Abeg continue to represent us well maybe they will give us more chances to enter.
MamaOO: I thought you were in the system, which is why I asked the question. You have just a slight idea of what you’re talking about but you’re missing a lot of critical aspects. The work permit (it’s called OPT btw) is for One year if they’re not in the STEM field, about three years if you’re in STEM. Gives plenty of time to get an H1B or EB green card. Yes a lot get married to stay legal but lots more get work visas and green cards as well. And what’s so bad about getting married anyways? So far it’s someone you love? Lots of people have also done this.
There is nothing wrong with getting married IF it is someone you love. The problem I have heard is that the people you want to love will look at you with side eye.
They will assume that the green card you are looking for is what is supporting the love, and because you are on time limit you will not have enough time to prove yourself. These doubts are the key issue.
The reason US is casted is because instead of playing that game of OPT or H1B green card which is not sure (H1B relies on a lottery) with Canada once you finish, not need for lottery, no need for sharp love, you can get what you want.
This is why I say Canada is the way forward. H1B is not secure. I know someone personally who ended up joining army after 4 years in University and 1 year work permit under mavni program for people that can speak African language. His life is mortgaged for 6 good years just so he can stay there. It makes no sense, when for the same cost he could have gone to Canada.
MamaOO: Who told them to go home after graduation? I’m curious
they don't have a choice. Once they finish, they are given one year work permit if they are lucky. After that, unless they get married, they have to leave or turn to illegal immigrant.
EgunMogaji: I will never recommend to anyone to immigrate to the USA as an illegal alien. I get into trouble for that on here and labelled as "enemy of progress", etc.
You pursued a student visa and you secured it, then you have to go. It doesn't speak well for you to have people running through hoops for you and then you abandon their sweat.
So many people think that America of today is America of Bill Clinton before 9/11. Even student visa to the US isn't paying again. I know of two people that went to the US under student visa and we're shocked when they were told to go home after graduation.
ooshinibos: am not a fan of Idahosa , I don't like the way he raised offering , I witness him doing it twice, one in Nigeria and one in London ...I was embarrassed
How did he do it? Was he stylishly insulting people for not giving more or what?
SSGN: The Nigerian government relies on gullible people like those two jackass accusing me of sensationalism to remain in power, as tuface said - use their head like dustbin. DSS come after me? Where do you think this is? Democratic People's Republic of North Korea.?
This is the truth. So long as there are people that can be mislead and caused to fight amongst themselves, they are safe. Once people stop bickering amongst themselves then the political class will sit up and start working.
KratosCorp: Any regular black American that's in Republican party is enlightened, independent and smart. Very much unlike the rest of the idiotic half-brained, lazy-ass black morons who have been brainwashed by the dem to believe that govt. is designed to solve all their problems.
This is the same dems that grossly oppressed and killed thousands of blacks - UNTIL THE NRA CAME TO THEIR RESCUE - some decades ago (and still do, like in Chicago). Now those black morons deride NRA and the GOP whilst embracing the same dems that had kept them grossly dependent and oppressed both now and historically.
If that's not a mental disease, tell me what is.
Just watch this video (if you have not done so already) to burst your burbles a bit:
AreaFada2: Congrats! Let's follow them mix up their politics.
My only worry is it seems the right wing anti-immigrant party are using this our brother to launder their racist image.
The motto being "If they have a black senator in the party, they cannot be racist".
A former municipal candidate of this Salvini's party shot and killed a black immigrant and wounded six other immigrants, in a racist attack. I think the victims were even Nigerians. The attacker is in jail now.
You hit the nail on the head. He is the "token black / minority" that is used to defend the party from accusations of racism. I wonder how Nigerians seem to ignore such critical facts.
Still, I am surprised Lega Nord has a black guy in their ranks.
Many of these far right parties are more anti-Muslim than anti-any other race,anyways....although I don't think they like blacks much.
Though if a black immigrant assimilates...and learns the lingo...that might allow for some acceptance.
Sir, you will be surprised that racist parties use a member of the people they hate very frequently.
They use those people to protect them from accusations of racism or anything of the sort. Once people call them out as racists, they say "How can we be racist if we have this one black/Mexican/Jew amongst us who supports us?".
SamoaJoe: Its either you guys are trying to be myopic or cunningly ignorant.
Please brothers lets stop all these inferiority complex that makes us celebrate anything including iddiots and terrorists. Its obvious that you guys didn't read the news well.
This so called Iwobi is a member of a party stirring up serious xenophobia in Italy. And you can also see that he is A member of the anti-migrant League
Abum ezigbote Nwafor Igbo. Obughi ihe obula ka unu gana ashout Igbo Amaka Upandan!
Learn to read the news biko. This Igbo man is nothing short of a terrorist! How can you despise your roots and expect to be celebrated? More like "The House Nigga" during the American slave trade. Otherwise what else explains making him a Senator just like that? Nobody should tell me a dint of hard work biko. There are so many white Italians working harder than him.
I am happy that you see what is really going on here. This senator is just like the likes of Daniel Kanu of those days. A willing tool of oppression.
He is used to parrot the racist sentiments of his party and they let him be senator sothat can say "Look! Even a black man agrees that the black people should go. We can't be racist.".
This is like the blacks in the US that support the Republican party. They know they can rise to high positions in the party because there are so few blacks that are willing to sell thier souls and so they join and are rewarded with positions.
We also see people like this in the NRA in the United States. There will always be Quislings like this, and they are invariably put in thier place and remided that those they serve have no respect for them if they ever make any attempt to show any independence.
In the US there are many Igbos that join the Republicans and play this same game. We see them in the police and in politics. They are like those Jews that joined the Germans in hunting down thier fellow Jews in exchange for preferential treatment. Of course, the Germans still dealt with them once they were no longer useful.
I am always glad to read your submissions to this forum. As we all know, Nairaland of today is not the same as Nairaland of 2007-2010. Most of the key and cerebral posters have left if disgust but you are still here with us trying to salvage it. Thank you.
Concerning the topic at hand, you are right, as always. The US had never wanted Nigeria to be able to stand alone and has invested a lot of time and effort to ensure that we do not achieve any meaningful capability to defend ourselves. The Book Haram arms saga is still a major example.
DICON is criminally underutilized and the FGN don't seem to want to push for any changes or strategic reorientation. India has benefitted and is still benefitting from it's strategic partnership with Russia in the defense sphere, but we are still here begging for third rate equipment.
I personally would favor total abandonment of Western defense equipment and push into Russia. Due to the fact that Russia does not harbor particularly deep seated geopolitical ambitions in the West Africa region, I think they will be more amenable to technology transfer in addition to supplying us with weapons.
As an oil exporting country, Nigeria is one of the few African countries that has the capability to invest massively in defense, and gigen how far we have to go, I'm sure that the Russians would be willing to sign technology transfer agreements with us knowing that we can make it worth thier while for at least the next 15 years.
The French as always will not like this, but we can checkmate them or at least reduce the level of thier meddling in the ECOWAS region. The loss of the Frenchman Zizzou in Benin Republic's 2016 presidential elections is a sign that our neighbors are ready to break away from the crippling yoke of French domination.
One of the planks used against Zizzou was that he was a while man (the guy is half caste and was born in France). There was also resistance to Zissou's campaign promise to build closer relationships with France. Imagine Benin getting even closer to France than it is.
We have the funds to support breakways in Benin and Togo for a start, especially if we are tactful by bringing Ghana on board. Ivory Coast, Chad, Cameroon and Niger will be far tougher to crack- especially Chad that serves as the French Colonial Guard in the region. However, we must start somewhere.
I must admit that I am not optimistic. With Ethiopia tottering on the verge of disintegration due to it's ethnic mix, I just can't feel optimistic. Even a country with a government as tightly run as Ethiopia with it's strong air Force and military can be brought down by Egypt, Sudan and some local lackeys. If that can happen to mighty Ethiopia, what about us who already hate each other?
kcmichael: Rochas for IMO west Madumere for IMO east Nwosu for Governor
Finally Rocha's will become senate president and finally president come 2023.
PDP is dead in IMO state.iPod will cry me an ocean.
Ndi Igbo let's join hands to project Igbo agenda come 2023
Honestly so many people don't see the damage caused by Ngige not entering Senate. Rochas will go for that seat and if Saraki is not careful enough, Rochas will take it and give a Northerner Deputy Senate President.
Ratello: Yes you can read through this link bro, http://segun.bizland.com/omoigui41.htm it was in the year 1975 sorry I said 1973 and the name of the Country then was Grenada, Gowon goofed bug time on that unilateral blunder as the Supreme Military Commander, you can read the excerpts below;
Foreign Policy
"This is a difficult area because of the lack of complete information from all concerned. The late Major General JN Garba has written his own opinions of Gowon’s foreign policy ‘misadventures’. However, General Gowon has rarely gone on record to explain his thinking in detail on many less well-known areas of foreign policy during in his time. Thus, what has been labeled negatively by some of his critics may simply be the direct result of lack of information. I am in a position to comment in detail on some of them, like the Cameroon border problem.
Some of Gowon’s close lieutenants – like the late Vice Admiral Wey – were extremely tight lipped about their experiences in government. But the Admiral did, on more than occasion before he died, express regret that those who took over from their government in July 1975 never bothered to seek policy clarity from them directly on any issue. The Adedeji panel of 1975/76, which reviewed foreign policy since independence, took no submissions from Gowon or Wey or Hassan.
Examples include details of how a planned mercenary invasion of Equatorial Guinea, for purposes of reviving Biafra, was thwarted and whether there were any trade-offs. Then there was the case of personal diplomacy in his pledge to assist Hamani Diori with Nigerian troops during a coup attempt in 1972. Others include Gowon’s decision – in 1975 - to pay the salaries of civil servants in Grenada and train their Police force at Nigerian expense."
Thank you for providing me with this information. I am very grateful.
Ratello: A President engage his intellectual gifts to run a Country since he will be surrounded by "lieutenants" to carry out specific instructions given them. Forget that he will be "too old" tag, Trump became President at 71 and he is doing fine Ronald Reagan became President at 69 and he spent 8 years in power going down as one of America's finest and best so my brother it is not about age but what you have upstairs! Here in Nigeria we have been ruled by youths as President in case you don't know and their inexperienced exposures cost us a lot. Gowon was 31 when he became head of state yet led Nigeria to a wasteful war with Biafra, this same youthful Gowon carelessly said, " the problem with Nigeria is not money but how to spend it". This same youthful Gowon against wise advice went ahead to pay an outstanding salary of a carribean Country's civil servants to the tune of then Nigerian N1.5 million free of charge in 1973 which was a lump sum. This same youthful Gowon left a Marshal Plan of 3Rs to Rehabilitate, Reconstruct and Reintegrate Biafrans after the war in 1970. A youthful Murtala Mohammed was 36 years old when he became head of state in 1975 yet he sacked over 10,000 Southern populated civil servants (against professional advice offered him then by those elderly super permanent secretaries in the civil service) which gave birth to ghost workers in the civil service commission that had cost the Nation wasteful expenses on "workers that don't exist", this same youthful Murtala Mohammed hurriedly map out a certain portion of expansive land (now Abuja) as Federal Capital Territory in 1975 at a time huge funds were being spent on Lagos as the then Federal Capital Territory. What would I say about a youthful, chubby cheeked Obasanjo who messed Nigeria up as a youthful 38 year old head of state in 1976 who scripted the 1979 Constitution that is still plaguing us till date as it has now metamorphosed into the erroneous and one sided 1999 constitution. This same Obasanjo perfected the art of rigging for FEDECO (the regulator of elections then) that rigged for NPN and Shagsri to emerge as President. I can go on but let me stop here but bear it in mind that I am not rubbishing the entire youths but just telling you that to govern Nigeria requires deep understanding of politics and great experience and not for greenhorns.
Would you please she'd more light on Gown paying the civil service salary backlog of a foreign country? Which country was this?
I would be very grateful to you for more information on this.
mirexxx: The first son,Muhammad Abacha would contest for Governorship in Kano state 2019.
After his debacle with Jafaaru Isa in 2011, I thought he would have learnt his lesson.
I am not aware of any sort of ongoing activity from him in Kano and he wants to be governor? How does he plan to do it?
I really think he should be wiser and start from house of reps after building a legitimate political structure in the state. There is still love for the Abachas in Kano but Mohammed just isn't ready to get it right.
SSGN: That will be a blessing to the rest of the country believe me.
Would it? I guess in the link run it would. In the short term, I suspect that the Fulani in the North West and thier Hausa allies would immediately become far more hostile towards the rest of the country if the North East or even just Borno and Yobe states left.
I suspect that they would attempt to create two new states and maybe even colonize a few more. Importing thier allies from Niger, Mali and Guinea would become an imperative for them.
The newly colonized states would serve as a bargaining chip to be "left" alone in exchange for an even more entrenched superior position for the Fula People.
I also suspect that the South would attempt to reorganize the country and push the North West back since the secession of the North Easterners would weaken the North West.
This could quickly lead to open war- at least that's the way I see it.
I think that an even more terrifying and equally accurate scenario is a Chadian Invasion backed by an ultra-nationalist French Government indirectly supplying arms to Kanuri Separatists in the Lake Chad Area.
If the North East is not stabilized, with time the alienation will continue and Separatists can actually take hold.
Imagine a pro-Kanuri movement that declares they want to join Chad after oil is discovered in the Nigerian section of the Lake Chad Basin.
Such a movement could frame itself as a return to thier relatives in Chad- the Kanuri are known to be quite close to the Chadians.
SSGN: Preach. As the Military Balance stands today the Chadians can easily take those Islands. Make no mistake, they will eventually be pushed out. But it will take weeks for Nigeria to finally get a handle on whats going on and push them out. Fire Brigade Nation.
KINGDOS: You missed it. There is a dark horse in NC. retired general (not Army) and a current senator. He will David? Trump the buharia beast of a thing back to Daura.
Please PM me the person. I don't know if we are thinking of the same person. Does it start with U and end with I?
