You are not even sure of the spirit talking to you, Definitely it is not God speaking to you here, when begin to doubt. So with what you are saying couples should continue to give birth like rats with no means of taking care of them abi? I know some churches that do discipline their workers who gives birth irrationally. How do you want to serve God with a clear head with so many kids responsibilities on you. By the way @op how many kids do you have?

Well, I have disputed Oduduwa falling from the story here on Nairaland over the years and often led to intertribal spat so that's another story.

When you hear something often enough, you begin to believe it. Be it true or not.

Fact is your grand dad and grandma would never have called themselves "ovbiubini". But ovbiedo.

Someone going from Ovia or Orionmwon to Benin would not have said "I am going to Ubini or Bini" but to Edo.
I grew up to meet people born in 1870s. People who were around 16 or 17 years old in 1897 as Oba Ovonramwen went to Calabar.

That some people still used various versions of Bini does not remove the fact that Ewuare the first (1440 to 1473) abolished Ubini by 1440 already. Some people still call Benin Republic Dahomey and Ghana Gold Coast. Whether some citizens there prefer the old name or not reality is they now have new names.

Oba Ewuare the first had nothing to hide. He just wanted to finally remove the disparaging name given by Oronmiyan. Though his father imadoduwa/Oduduwa was an exiled Benin, Oronmiyan was essentially a foreigner brought up with Yoruba culture.

The story is pretty well established and well known. Ewuare the first was an astute politician, warrior and reformer. No other Oba has left so much impact on Edo culture than Ewuare. A new name was just another of his political, social, religious, military and wide ranging reforms.

Edo by the way was a loyal servant who saved his life during struggle for the throne. He thought that such bravery, loyalty and dedication epitomise Igodomigodo spirit and honoured him with renaming the empire Edo. The servant Edo lost his life in that struggle.
I like the fact you are honest about the reason Oba Ewuare wanted to abolish the disparaging name given by Oranmiyan but you made mention of when people start to hear something for too long they start to think that it is the truth. Due to the composition of my family I am able to reason out of the Yoruba/Edo sentiments, so it made me to be neutral. It was then I could be able to search for some truth. When I start this thread on Niaraland very soon, some people will hear what their fathers have not even heard before. They used to say in Yorubaland that The Ooni is the first king but this was a big lie, in fact there were about 51 kings before the Ooni. I also come to discover that the story about Oduduwa coming from Ogiso was entirely false, in fact Oduduwa was the younger brother of Obatala. I also found out that the word OBA started with the Obatalas and not Oduduwa. Also the Ogiso dynasty had alot of Ondo towns but deliberately left the Town of Owo in Ondo state thesame thing too happened with the Oyo empire. Why did these two empires leave Owo town and didn't conquer it. By Gods grace from next month I will be bursting their age long lies here. grin

AreaFada2:
Nothing like Bini. It's Benin.

In fact by 15th century it was already known as Edo. As renamed from Igodomigodo by Ewuare I. It's creation of Edo state recently that now makes it more necessary to use Benin for sake of Esan, Owan, Igbanke and others who are also Edo State people.

Till now, you are "Ovbiedo" as a Benin person Not "Ovbiebini". grin grin cheesy

Beny was Portuguese from Ile Ubini writing it in 1478. The British wrote it in 1553 as Benin when they came later. It was Itsekhiri who told them at the coast upon landing that the power king inland ruling over the whole area is Oba of Ile Ubini, Beny, Bini or Benin never was our cup of tea really.

Ile Ubini was never popular among Edo people. By 1440 Oba Ewuare I had abolished Ile Ubini totally as another name. But just like Nigeria as name of our country, we didn't chose Benin. Either way we just took the British version as Benin. But Ovbiedo (Ivbiedo as plural) is what we are first and foremost.

People feel the need to make it look or sound more of vernacular by writing Bini. Even many Benin people are guilty of this. Despite correction from the palace over many years.

Benin/Edo people called Lagos Eko as a military camp. Portuguese later called it Lagos because of the lagoon. The British records even show Eleko Dosunmu as DOCEMO. So most parts of 9ja have had names tampered with. But enduring inherit culture is not all about an additional name given by invaders,
@ bold, am i the only one who thinks the people know why they still want to call it Bini rather than Benin and not because they were making a mistake? could it be that Oba Ewuare 1 is hiding something from the people?

some 20years ago i remember my Gandma saying Ibini, then often times my dad(who is educated unlike my grandma) often use the word Ibini too or Bini..i keep asking my self why he does that , then i heard the Oranmiyan story of calling the then Ogiso, Ile Ibinu(the land of angry people) so i kept wondering again what concerns Yoruba man with Edo/Benin . Then i went to Ile-Ife one time to do some work for a bank and was shocked to see the burial site of past Obas of Benin then this left me more confused again..but the truth of everything is beginning to unfold to me now, all the lies they have been telling us in Ile -Ife of one Oduduwa falling from the sky and creating the world and that of Benin too will be exposed here very soon when i create my thread.

Those who do not value their culture enough might lose them but not in Benin. Those items that were hidden during the war and those in locations the British didn't know are still available today. I know that firsthand.
You spelt Bini as Benin s culture not already tampered wit like that

Sometimes I wonder what exactly makes up a typical african woman's brain.

If I talk now, they'll say I've come again, 'boys are misogynists' bla bla bla.

In the 21st century, look at all what grownup girls can gather to think about.

On Nairaland, Ive never seen a post involving a group of girls argue which is better between Vue.js or React.js, or whether jQuery will always remain relevant.

I've never seen an intellectual topic between ladies on what SQL injection is, what multi-threading, the importance of data-mining, how to scrape data etc.

The typical african woman's brain is so so dull and what is worse is they are so comfortable with it.

The other time it was the attention-seeking wh*re saying 'Beauty is the greatest asset of a woman'. That shows u how they think.

All they think of is 'breasst, nyansh, hair, wig, phone, camera, bleach, makeup, f*ck, sex, boyfriend' - then when they now grow old, they will go and sell pepper in the market. angry

Naija babes are a significant millstone to this country because many of them make up unskilled workforce and only look to offer their body for money either through fake relationships and marriage as well.
Ahahahah you cracked me up, but I still think there are female programmers, though I am yet to see one

That is not true, as long as you are not registered with them they do any jack. You think the publishers will spend their money to be doing research up and down, do you know how much it will cost, that is why it is called world Guiness records. It is their own record. By the way I watched on Natgeo wild a Turtle close to 300yrs

True, but tou should no we africans exaggerate a lot,ww are bad at record keeping and we don't leave enough evidences. It is very hard to believe things like this, and that 344years old is out of range,d oldest confirmed yet is 189 and dat margin is just too much to believe. That was how a northerner also claimed to be 287years old some years back when the oldest confirmed person lived for 119years
You are still not listening to me, on this thread you have seen a lot of people confirming the age of that Tortoise, you are still relying on Guiness record for your validation, i am sure if they come out tomorrow to accept the age you will believe. Let me add here, when Baptist was celebrating 100yrs in Ogbomoso I went to Bowen hospital and I saw the Picture of Doctor Bowen with on of the SOUN that likely brought that tortoise from war to the palace, now do the maths.

and they tell you that it is everything that interests the publishers at Guiness records? is the company not owned by humans? so anything you don't see on guiness is a lie abi? Mr bayo broke the record of the longest time spent to read a book here in lagos but Guiness said they won't accept it until he comes to do it at their office in london. so there is no big deal about them. we can be our on guiness too we don't need validation from any body

Forget math and all that. Simply do a radio carbon dating and you wouldnt have to do any guessing or mathematics.

That shouldnt be too hard to perform.
of course but in the case we want to do some manual counting

344? Was any scientific analysis carried out before they arrived at that conclusion? Any radio carbon dating or something?
Tortoise used to live really long, by the way I schooled in Ogbomoso so I know that Tortoise, The king said that his own father met the Tortoise in the palace and this present king is almost 90yrs so if we do the maths it is possible for the animal to be 344
