Efesogie: You guys say "true facts" and proceed to serve us lies. This is just seek Yoruba have no history, rather you have a bunch of concocted lies which you repeat endlessly with the hope they would transform into truth. The truth is Yoruba descend from freed slaves dumped on our shores by the Europeans and from a few local ethnic groups: the Edo, the oyos, and the dahomians.
even your King whose Oranmiyan blood flows in his viens will dear not say such, when people ask for the truth , they always forget to also ask for the grace to accept it
Efesogie: All the above is a lie. In 1903 the Oba of Benin was Oba Ovonramwen, he lost a war against Britain six years earlier (1897) and he was in exile in Calabar in a sort of house arrest. His palace, had been burnt down by the British, Benin city (the capital of Benin empire) was in ruins. The British burnt the city down. Why you Yoruba always tell lies to aggrandise yourselves baffles me. Next you should say that all kings of the universe vacated their thrones when they heard a guy with a d.ick on his forehead was summoned to Lagos by his British masters.
why are you so pained...you are taking this too personal ,
Answer : During time of Basorun Yanba a lot of towns were conquered for the the Alaafin , of which Ghana,Benin,Togo and Burkina faso were among, this conquest continued under Basorun Ga, who happens to be the son of Basorun Yanba.
If you noticed there are some Yoruba speaking parts in most of these countries mentioned above...a very good example is that of Benin which used to be called Dahomey. For those who have visited Benin(including me) you will realize that they have a number of people who can speak the Oyo dialect and also have Oyo tribal marks but they are not Nigerians.
Now to the reason for that statement When a Town is conquered the conquerors often establish their own government (though this may include the aboriginals they met there but will be headed by the conquerors) this was the case in Bini when Oranmiyan conquered Igodomigodo and changed its name and also their ruling house and title , this also happened in the Ashanti land which is now is present day Ghana.
When a king dies in Yoruba land they are taken to their burying place called Orun(Heaven) which is always at Ile-Ife , this is where the kings are buried but over time this tradition has stopped, but before it stopped. it happened that the Oni Nana of Ashanti land died and was to be taken to his own Orun(Burying site in Ile -Ife) as the custom requires. SO they had to trek a lot of days and months to get to Ile - Ife. WHen they got to Ile -Ife they were asked how many Moons they counted before they got to Ile -Ife and they replied 6, it was then the Elders of Ile-Ife exclaimed and gave them the rites to have their own Burying place for all later Oni Nanas because of the distance.
So often times, even up to this day, when our elders want to describe how far a place is they will say O jin bi Orun Ashanti meaning it it far like the Heaven(Burial ground) of Ashanti.
i hope we learnt something today
let me copy my Elders cc Macof , TAO11 cc lalasticlala pls help move to the front page for others to learn
But what I often have issues with regarding discourse like this is the oft-repeated dichotomous idea and impression that one must be false because the other is true.
No! Why can't both be true? There isn't one Yoruba language afterall. There is a variety of the Yoruba language. They are called dialects. All legitimate.
"Kaaro-Ojire" is also correct and widely used among diverse Yoruba subgroups. And "KAARO" is not a "bastardization" bro. Elisions and contractions are essential and natural parts of All SPOKEN languages.
The technical Yoruba term in academia is "ÌPAJẸ Ọ̀RỌ̀".
It is perfectly legit Yoruba to SPEAK (or even write) of the "KING's WIFE" as "AYABA".
Cheers!
Well maybe I was too hash and thanks for the correction on that
TAO11: I thought I should share this interesting piece of historical information on the first time an Ooni of Ife will set foot 'outside' of his palace:
It was in the year 1903 when the then Ooni of Ife, Oba Adelekan Olubuse 1, was invited to Lagos by the then Governor General of the Southern Protectorate, Sir William MacGregor.
The Ooni was invited as a last resort measure to settle an important and fast escalating supremacy feud between certain Yoruba OBAs (I believe the Elepe and the Akarigbo --- I'm not 100% certain at the moment who and who it was) in the Lagos region.
The issue had evaded several resolution attempts by the British Government representatives until the British Government thought it was time that the Ooni himself stepped in.
Now, it must have been a really serious issue to warrant the Ooni to vacate his throne. No Ooni had done that before --- It was a pseudo-sacrilege.
Many sacrifices were offered en-route Lagos and in the whole process of his vacating his revered and imperial throne. The British Government bore all the cost of the sacrifices.
The Ooni quenched the duel as if it never happened, and as if no one ever attempted to solve the issue.
The most interesting aspect of all these, for me, is as follows:
As soon as the news reached all the kings in Southern Nigeria (from Warri, through Asaba, and down to the Yoruba interior --- including the Oba of Benin, the Alaafin of Oyo, and the Elékò) that the Ooni vacated his palace; they independently left their thrones and lived outside of their palace walls until the news reached them that the Ooni was back in Ife.
As if they informed each other, they considered it sacrilegious to continue residing in their respective palaces while the Ooni had vacated his (although temporarily and for good cause).
All these information is well documented in more details in the Government Gazette for the Colony of Lagos published on Saturday, February 28, 1903.
Also attached below is a video interview of the 'yesterday' Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse II which speaks to the same issues:
You are very right, it was the Elepe and Akarigbo of Remo.. In fact The ancestral crown of Akarigbo of Remo was sieZed by the Ooni... The crown later found it self at the British museum. Don't mind all those trying to distort history
Olu317: Na wa oooo! Omo Kaaro O jire has become Kootu ojire? What dialect is that?
If i tell you I am not some one you can argue with, I know what I am saying. The original pronunciation is Kootu and not Kaaro.. Eku Aro is the right pronunciation and not Ekaaro. These were bastardization of Yoruba words. Why did you think the Portuguese called us the *Ku* people.
macof: I have suspected this for a few years now but would still do some research on it to get some assurance for this theory. Or do you have some more information on this?
Because Okanbi is not known in Ife but seems to be a popular name in Oyo
Please visit Ile Ife, to have a balanced authentic history of Ogun/Okanbi... Yorubas are notorious of starting stories that never happened in other to spite other kings and towns especially during war. These stories when spread for too long is now accepted by descendants of the creators as history
The content of this thread, just as hundred like it on this forum, is terribly uninformed and therefore misleading.
I am not in the mood to start typing lengthy arguments to debunk many of the distortions stated here.
Let me summon a historical daemon; macof s_b_gos
You shouldn't be dissapointed, you should be discomfitted! A true scholar who genuinely seeks to understand, and share by discuss an opinion about the protology of their ancestral history should know better than to stay clear off external sources whose view are generally bias and demeaning and set to out to debase the most ancient and surviving civilization of the human race: the Yoruba Karøójirés'. The more reason one must lean on their vast oracular compendium of all human history, culture, language, science, philosophy, technology etc: Ifá.
@bolded:
Same people who for a long time coming have been and are still heavily influenced by the Judeo-Islamic cosmogony molded from Abrahamic mytheology and lecturers whose interpretations reeks of bias traced to their Islamic and Christian leanings. So I dare say Fvck 'em both.
Ifá remains the only true source to learn, confirm, verify the authenticity of claims, stated or written by anyone. And only from the real Babalawos not from any of the many fake and religion affected ones who are inclined to dilute their explanations with mentioning of words, terms, places associated with Christianity and Islam just to appeal to their clients, students or pupils.
First of all it is called kootuojire and not kaarojire, many of you claim to know but still don't know. Does the religion some one picks distort his history...
Olu317: Oh, you want me to put diacritic on the yoruba name? Smiles. Then, once it is on YouTube,it is the truth to you about the meaning of Yoruba? Lol . I rest my case.
No, there is this man called Laji Abass.. He is a great researcher, just watch him. He confirms most of my findings too.. Just prepare your self to hear the truth and be humble. There are some things you have heard about Yoruba history that you may find difficult to throw away. Once again the best place to get history is the people involved in the history
chukskafor: Hope you know the norms involved in parrots keeping as pet, once they accept you as a partner, no any other person, not even a family member is allowed to pet it And when they are within your proximity, they object to any close contact between you and any other person
Really? I thought its only Dogs that behave like that
Olu317: Despite your intention is promote some information on Yoruba greatness, there are many flaws in your post. Take for instance, Ogun lakaye is about your literary interpretation as one who know how to read but ; Ogun la ka aiye is; war lord that shine forth in life.
Lol.. Bro it is not me you Will argue with oo.. From your spelling sef it shows you don't know the hidden history about Ogun. I will help you with a YouTube name. Search foe Itan Yoruba on YouTube, then you will see I am not wrong afteral
lx3as: Ọwọ is very ancient than Bini; most cultures/religions you get in Bini today were from Ọwọ and Ugbo(Ilaje). Ugodomigodo was quite different from present Bini. Maybe you need to see Ọbalùfọ̀n with lots of beats...
Those arguing on Oduduwa or Okanbi being Ogun; There were Original Ogun, Oduduwa, Sango, Oranmiyan. However, many great people beared these names after them; people are still bearing Ogun, etc. till today. Okanbi as Ogun or Sango as Oyo king were different from the first Ogun or Sango, Obatala's contemporaries
I don't think anyone has ever argued that Oduduwa is Okanbi. The history of the Yoruba is something that has been bastardized with lies for selfish reasons and Conspiracies on the part of warring towns of that time. There we're some things I believed about the Yorubas until I started to hear some real truth. See there are some histories that have been kept so as to avoid chaos between present day towns in Yoruba land. Ile-Ife have the truth about history of Yorubas but they deliberately dish out lies. Except you can come up with facts that Ogun lakaye was not a human and a god and Sango too....
gregyboy: I thank God the op had admitted some of the fact the benin people lay claims on
Oduduwa falling from the sky have always been debated by the benin people the Benin with a well documented history have always mainted oduduwa was not a sky diver or a Wonderer from Mecca but a banished Prince from benin....
The world oba was madd popular by the benins to the yorubas as stated by the o.p since all kings had their original title So i wonder why they will take oba from obatala to represent king why didn't just take the full name fo represent king as a general term for king....i thank the o.p for clearing that fact
Olowo of owo havinv the oldest palace in yorubaland also has its monarchy from benins ,
Oba kha to kpere
Ise!!!!
Owo is different from Iwo.. Stop trying to twist things, you people can continue to lie to your selves but we all know the truth about Obaship in Bini..
SEGLIZ: if you want the the truth meet an ifa priest to get your facts (someone like Yemi Elebunibon, Peter Fatomilola, etc), any Yoruba lecturer in any institution of learning. I'm still convinced of what I know through the custodian of Yoruba culture and ife man even from the palace would claim right even to none claimable.
I knew you will want to go to Ifa, and I am not disappointed, this is what some people do think will solve a lot of unknown things, but what they forget is there are some verses in Odu Ifa that are used as Metaphors so this makes it difficult to relly entirely on Odu Ifa.. The best way to know about the history of any where is to go to the people who owns the history and not some Lecturer. Even Rev. Samuel Johnson made some mistakes in his history of the Yoruba people how much more our present day lecturers
SEGLIZ: op a well done job but from number 8 down to 10 are not in tandem with Yoruba genealogy. obatala was no contemporary of oduduwa likewise ogun, obatala and ogun were both contemporaries for the both existed long even before oduduwa. obatala and ogun were both deities being worshipped before oduduwa. okanbi is not same as ogun.
. that is entirely not true.. I used to think it was so before not until I starred to explore, even in Ile Ife they know Ogun was Oduduwas son but they just deliberately kept quiet about it. The Okanbi name is the name Oyo people gave Ogun lakaye
The beads on all Crowns created from Ile-Ife(Ancestral Crowns) must be 16 in number. There are 16 Odu Ifa(Ifa incarnations). Ile-Ife have 16 elders(now kings) who advises the Olufe(Ooni). There are 16 points in Ibadan, although all cities in Yoruba land only have 4 entries
2.Olowo's Palace is the Oldest Palace In Yoruba Land
Many people used to think every thing about the Yoruba people started from Ife, but that is not entirely true. The Oldest Palace in Yoruba land is that of Olowo In Owo Ondo state. The palace is about 10,000years old.
3.Oduduwa is not the first King in Ile - Ife
Contrary to believes which Originated from lies and fables been spread around about Oduduwau being the first king of Ile -Ife there has been about 90 kings before Oduduwa , among them Is Obalufon ,Obamakin etc
4.Yorubas have a close relationship with the Gobiri tribe of Borno From the time of Oduduwa there was a relationship with the Borno tribe and up to this day , Gobiri people won't engage any Yoruba man in a quarrel because they see them as brothers
5.The word YORUBA was given to Oyo people alone Prior to 1903 , the only people that do answer the name Yoruba were only Oyo people alone, but in 1903 the British government asked everyone including those in Ilorin to bear the name Yoruba since we all cam from Ile-Ife , though the Ooni at that time rejected it but he later agreed
The Ooni was not the first title of kings in Ile-Ife
Prior to the Ooni title , there have been titles like Owa,Ooye and Olufe
6. Ile - Ife was the Capital city
Ile -Ife was the capital city of all Yoruba towns , so Ambassadors are selected to represent other towns in Ile Ife, it is out of these Ambassadors who are 16 in numbers that the Olufe is chosen, then some very confidant of 3 Ambassadors are the ones who can see the Olufe while the rest may never see him again till he dies
7.Not all Yorubas are descendant of Oduduwa
Contrary to lies that all Yorubas came from Oduduwa, there has been towns and places in existence before he began to rule, some of these towns are Ilesha,IjebuOwo,Oba-ile etc...in fact the House of Ogedengbe in present day Ilesa is older than Oduduwa
8.Odudwa was Born in Ile-ife
There was no such thing as Oduduwa falling from the sky (These Folklore started from Oba-Ile in present day Akure) , these were just lies also. Oduduwa does not have any relationship with anyone from Bini or Benin, His brother was Obatala...
9.Ogun is the first man who learnt how to read and write
Okanbi who is also known as Ogun (the god of Iron) who was the son of Oduduwa was the first man to read and write in Yoruba land, that is why he is called Ogun Lakaye(that is Ogun who knows, can read and write) ...In fact it was written on his house Ile - ife till this day that he was the first in Yoruba land who caould read and write.
10.The word OBA started from The Obatalas
Most Yoruba kings even up to this day are called by their ancient titles e.g Owa of Ijesha Land, Ooni of Ife Alaafin of Oyo etc..the word OBA was only used for the Obatalas, eg Obalufe, Obalufo Obamakin etc but with time people begin to use the word OBA as a common noun to call a king in Yoruba how ever their title still remains.
11.Nana of Ashanti in Ghana is A Yoruba man
During Basorun Yanba's reign so many towns were conquered among them are the Ashanti land in present day Ghana
12.Ogun was the first man to use Iron
Ever wondered why Ogun(the god of Iron) who is called Okanbi by the Oyo people and also know as Ide ko se ro ake(means Brass can not be used to make Axe) was the first man to use iron. He leanrrt all these art when he followed his Father(Oduduwa) to war in Egypt.
