THE EFFECTS OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY ON THE LEARNING OF THE CHILDREN IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN KWALI AREA COUNCIL, FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY, ABUJA.

ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this research work is to investigate into the effect of Juvenile Delinquency on the Learning of Children in Primary Schools in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.

The researcher posed five questions as follows:

What are the effects of stealing on the Learning of the children?

What are the effects of aggression on the Learning of the children?

What are the effects of cheating on the Learning of the children?

What are the effects of alcoholism and drug abuse on the Learning of the children?

What are the effects of promiscuity on the Learning of the children?

A questionnaire of four Likert scales was used by the researcher to collect the data. She used simple percentage to analyze the data. The findings of the work showed that juvenile delinquency have numerous negative effects on the learning of the children. To conclude, the researcher recommended ways for the teachers, parents, school authorities, guidance counsellors, curriculum planners, etc, to use in order to combat juvenile delinquency in our schools, homes and society at large.

Background of the Study

It is glaring that many teachers at one time or the other have to bring classroom discussion to a pause in other to handle problem behaviour of the pupils. However, not all forms of problem behaviour may so disrupt the classroom procedures.

There are many special problems of children such as: Juvenile delinquency, stammering, nail biting and thumb sucking, enuresis and truancy. These behaviour problems are important to teachers because they need to help the children who have them. For learning to occur in any of the children with behaviour problem, such problem must be dealt with. One of the behaviour problems which hampers learning is juvenile delinquency. If the children are allowed to live with the problem(s), they affect the children’s classroom work and can also grow into very serious problem in future.

AN ASSESSMENT OF DRIVER EDUCATION ON ROAD TRAFFIC CRASHES IN GWAGWALADA AREA COUNCIL

ABSTRACT

This study is concerned with the effects of driver education on road traffic crash involvement in Gwagwalada Area Council. The main objectives are: to assess the level of education of drivers in Gwagwalada Area Council; to determine the level of drivers training in the study area; to determine the relationships between the level of education and road traffic crash on one hand and between the level of drivers training and road traffic crash on the other. Data for this study were obtained on the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of commercial drivers and their road crash involvement. The characteristics considered are sex, age, income, level of education, drivers training (education), driving experience, and road traffic crash involvement. These were obtained through questionnaire administered to commercial drivers and also through Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Data on road traffic crash were also obtained from the Federal Road Safety Corps. The data obtained were analysed using simple tables, graphs and chi-square statistical techniques. Analysis of the data led to the conclusion that: the level of education of the drivers has no effect on road traffic crashes; there exists a positive relationship between drivers training and road traffic crash. Drivers who pass through driving schools before being licenced have less road traffic crashes. Drivers training are more related to road traffic crash than the level of education. The study therefore recommends for the establishment of standard driving schools under proper supervision of regulatory agencies and for the Law on licenses that require mandatory training of new drivers in driving schools to be properly enforced. The study also recommends periodic retraining of commercial drivers.

Background to the Study

Prior to the 1960s, there were few vehicles on Nigeria roads and the rate of Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) was equally small (Malomo, 2008). Thus there was little concern about safety matters and little attention was accorded to road crash prevention strategies and remedies. However, since independence in 1960, road transportation system in Nigeria has witnessed tremendous expansion and growth.

Road construction in Nigeria received a major boost in the 1970s during the oil boom era. The national road network grew from 6,500km in 1960 to 10,000km in 1970 and 29,000km in 1980. By 2004 the total National road Network grew to 193,200km. Similarly, the number of passenger vehicles in Nigeria has grown tremendously over the years from 14.0 per 1000 people in 2002 to 30.8 in 2007. (Road Mirror, 2010).

It is primary and crucial that a document used in litigation must not only be relevant, it should also be admissible. Thus, if a party wants to rely on the contents of a document to establish his case, it is his duty to bring them to notice of the court; and as a general rule he must produce the original of the document before the court.

Nevertheless, in certain circumstances some obstacles do affect the admissibility of document to be tendered as evidence in the court of Law. Such issues include, lost of or destruction of paper documents, alteration, forgery of documents and sometimes documents are erroneously admitted by the court in the course of proceedings as well as other sundry issues relating to documentary evidence.

There are the major problems that has to do with the admissibility of documentary evidence in the court of Law under the Law of Evidence in Nigeria i.e. striking the balance between the documents that are admissible and these that are not admissible as well as those that are become admissible in view of others are reliable evidence in the court of Law under Nigeria Law of Evidence

Right from creation, women have played an enormous role in the religious, social, political, economic and moral development of nations. As her male counterparts created in the image and likeness of God, the woman was also given the command to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and govern it. Since then, women have participated actively in various fields.

Though not seen as equal with her male counterpart and relegated and discriminated against in almost every sphere of life, the women has been relentless, in her effort to assert her independence and God’s given role. Today, the influence and the indispensable role of women cannot be over emphasized.

In the political social and religious history of the Israelites, certain women performed outstanding roles so much so that the Bible will be incomplete without mentioning these women.
