CrimeMan Attempts To Kill Mom To Sell Family House In Lagos by ceometromedia(op): 4:46pm On Apr 16, 2016
A 23-year old man has been arrested and charged before a Lagos court for attempting to kill his mom in order to sell their family house in Lagos State, western Nigeria.

The suspect, Busayo Baruwa, allegedly brought a knife to kill his mom, Orija Baruwa after she refused to release documents for their house (to enable him to sell it).

The incident happened at 7 Isuti road in Igando area, Lagos where they reside and the house in question is located.

Busayo attempted to kill the woman after Orija turned down his request to sell the family house without the consent of other siblings.

We gathered that Busayo approached his mom and informed him that he wanted to sell the house and had gotten a buyer so as to raise money to start his life.

He also told her that the buyer had agreed to buy the house for an undisclosed amount and what they needed was to sight the documents to authenticate it.

However, Orija turned down his request to give him the papers and informed him that if such decision would be taken, other children would be involved.

She also told him that she was not even willing to sell the house and go and live as tenant in another house.

Busayo became angry and reportedly brought out a knife and held her to kill her before she raised alarm.

The neighbours who had the alarm rushed in and prevented Busayo from killing her.

The matter was reported to the police at Igando division and Busayo was later arrested and charged before Ejigbo magistrate’s court with attempted murder under the Criminal Code. He pleaded not guilty.

The presiding Magistrate, Mrs J.O.E Adeyemi granted him bail with two sureties in like sum.

He was remanded in prison custody pending when he will perfect his bail.
The matter has been adjourned till 25 April 2016.

CelebritiesI Lost My Mother-in-law To Lack Of Pedestrian Bridge - Desmond Elliot by ceometromedia(op): 5:44pm On Apr 11, 2016
https://16745-presscdn-0-7.pagely.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Desmond-Olusola-Eliot.jpg
Popular Nollywood actor and member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliot, on Monday told his colleagues at the Assembly that he lost his mother-in-law to a lack of pedestrian bridge across an expressway in Lagos.

He did not mention the particular expressway or when the incident occurred, but said his mother-in-law was hit while she was trying to cross the expressway on her return from the Daleko market in the Mushin area of Lagos where she had gone to buy foodstuff.

Elliot was arguing in favour of a motion to call on the Federal Government to provide a pedestrian bridge at Toyota Bus Stop along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

The House also called on the Lagos state government to provide palliatives in the form of road signs and zebra crossings on strategic areas of the road and ensure compliance by motorists.

The motion was moved by Jude Idimogu, the representative of Oshodi Constituency 2 in the House on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Idimogu lamented that some road users had lost their lives while crossing from one side of the ever-busy road to another.

He added that it was imperative for the state and Federal Governments to do something urgently on the road.

His motion was supported by some of his colleagues including Sola Giwa who pointed out though, that it is not every time that the government could provide pedestrian bridges, but that road signs could easily be provided to ensure safety of lives and properties.

In his contribution, Segun Olulade stressed that a lot of Lagos residents pass through the area and that pedestrian bridges should be provided in all necessary areas in the state to reduce accidents on the roads.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who agreed that the bridge was important.

Obasa noted: “it would be impossible for the Lagos state government to provide the bridge, especially this year as it was not catered for in the budget. It is a Federal Government road, but the state government can provide palliatives.

“We must ensure that motorists are made to obey the road signs that would be provided on the road for the benefit of our people.”

PoliticsPresidency Denies Reported $50million Ransom Demand For Abducted Chibok Girls by ceometromedia(op): 1:52pm On Apr 11, 2016
Minister of information, Lai Mohammed has denied reports that Boko Haram is demanding $50m from the government as ransom before releasing the over 200 abducted Chibok schoolgirls. Mohammed made the denial in an interview with the Voice of America.

"It appears we have several versions of this report. The one that we heard was from a source that (Boko Haram) wants to release 10 of these girls for 1 million euros. But the most important thing is that we’ve gone through this route before, and until and when we establish the credibility of this source and the truth behind it, the government will not be in a hurry to make a statement. However, government is using its own channels to authenticate the credibility of this source," he said.

The Information minister described as 'unfair' the accusations that the Buhari administration is not doing enough to secure the release of the abducted girls.

"No day passes without the issue of the kidnapped girls not being at the front burner. But these are highly security and intelligence issues, which cannot always be discussed openly. But I can assure you that for this government, the return of these girls is what is going to bring the final closure on the Boko Haram terrorism and we are working very hard, daily on it."

"Those who say that are being very unfair to us,” Mohammed said. "We inherited a very bad situation where the trail had gone cold, despite that every day we send out reports, we receive [information] some of them are phony some of them are just there to excoriate government. But the truth of the matter is that it’s not a matter that the government is taking lightly. Those who want a daily report on what we are doing, of course in security that does not happen. But we have channels of information in which we make available on a need to know basis," he said.

PoliticsFuel Scarcity: Nigerian Govt Destroys 400 Illegal Refineries by ceometromedia(op): 4:19pm On Apr 10, 2016
Despite the fuel scarcity situation in the country, the Nigerian government destroyed over 400 illegal refineries in the last three months, a Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, official has revealed.

NSCDC Commandant, Desmond Agu, said that the illegal refineries operated by oil thieves were destroyed between January and March.

Some Nigerians, including the Ijaw Youths Council, have asked the federal government to legalise and regulate the modular refineries to ensure production of petrol and other by-products and as a means of job creation.

“Licensing modular refineries will reduce the pressure on the naira as the foreign exchange spent on importing the products will be conserved,” the chairman of the Ijaw Council, Udengs Eradiri, said in March.

The federal government has not indicated any willingness to legalise or regulate the modular refineries.

Nigeria has been hit with a scarcity of petrol in the past months that has helped in worsening the already troubled economy. The scarcity has forced many Nigerians, who need petrol for their cars and to power their electric generators, to buy the product at the black market sometimes at 500 per cent increase in price.

PoliticsEmefiele Does Not Fly Private Jets To Meetings - CBN by ceometromedia(op): 8:12pm On Apr 09, 2016
Social media was awash this morning with reports claiming that the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, now flies private jets to attend meetings in and out of Nigeria. According to a statement released by the Ag. Director, Corporate Communications of CBN, Isaac Okorafor today April 9th, this report is totally false. According to the statement, Emefiele and his principal staff use local flights and sometimes use the roads when going for meetings. The statement also denied claims of Emefiele and his family flying a private jet to attend his mother's funeral in Delta state recently. Read their statement after the cut.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has, for several years in the past, used private and official chartered flights in making urgent travels to meet needs in remote, not-easily- accessible locations or in cases where timing might be critical to matters of urgent national importance. This practice was in place long before the assumption of office of the current Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele. In fact it is on record that the past two CBN Governors actively used chartered private jet services to meet urgent national assignments. Indeed, in recognition of this critical need in its smooth operations, the CBN had in the 1990s acquired a dedicated jet for this purpose and for urgent currency movement.

This was however taken over by the military administration when there was a more urgent need for it at the State House. Thereafter, the CBN occasionally used the chartered services of private operators and those of the Presidential Fleet when available, both of which were paid for. However in 2015, in response to the economic downturn and the cost-cutting stance of Government, Mr. Emefiele ordered the stoppage of the use of chartered flights by the Bank. Since then, neither Mr. Emefiele nor any of the Deputy Governors has used the services of private chartered flights and the CBN has not paid a kobo for private jet services. Mr Emefiele and indeed other principal officers of the CBN have religiously maintained the modest disposition of using regular flights, including doing several trips by road to and from different parts of the country. It is also important to note here that no private jet was used by Mr. Emefiele, his immediate family, or indeed other principal officers of the Bank during the burial of Mr Emefiele’s mother. FOR THE AVOIDANCE OF ANY DOUBT, IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT MR. EMEFIELE AND HIS FAMILY FLEW A COMMERCIAL ARIK FLIGHT FROM LAGOS TO BENIN FOR THEIR MOTHER’S BURIAL. All accounts still point to the fact that the Emefiele’s mother’s burial was a model in cost-cutting and an uncommon demonstration of his modest, “made in Nigeria” philosophy.

The 72 suspects arrested in Edo state

A Pastor of the Deeper Life Bible Ministry has miraculously escaped from the den of kidnappers: And he sensationally made his escape as they dozed off.

Pastor Gilbert Akioyamen, was abducted at about 6 pm on March 24, along Ukhun road, Ekpoma, Esan West local government area of the state, while on his way to the Deeper Life camp ground.
‎‎
Three of the suspected kidnappers, including a business woman, namely, Charles Arasomwan, 22; Jezreel Ekanem, 21; and Mbindi Nneka, 26; were paraded on Thursday with 72 other suspects arrested for various crimes, at the state police command headquarters in Benin.

Narrating their level of involvement and how their victim escaped from their grip, one of the suspects, Ekanem, said the Pastor had been kept in their custody by some other fleeing members of the gang who promised to reward them .

“They said that they were going to a bank and told us to keep an eye on the man‎. They said that they would give us something to buy some beer.
‘The man did not talk to us, so we slept off. When we woke up, we realised that he had escaped,” he explained.‎

His female counterpart, Mbindi Nneka, however denied any knowledge of the abduction, saying that she was only in the apartment to remove her property‎.
”I don’t know how the matter started. I was the one living in the apartment before I put my brother there when I got married. It was the landlord that instructed me to remove the property there. I wish I knew that it would have resulted into this; it was the landlord that put me in this problem.‎ I only went there to move the property to my house,” she said.‎

According to the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike, the suspects were‎ arrested after the Ekpoma divisional police headquarters, received a distress call and combed several buildings in the area.

He explained that while Arasomwan and Ekanem were nabbed in the building where the victim was kept, Nneka was arrested in the apartment of one of the suspects, said to be her relative.

‘Two locally made cut-to-size single barrel guns, mask, ATM cards, one long rope and one mat were recovered from the suspects,” Ezike said.

The kidnapping suspects were among the scores of criminals paraded by the Edo Police Command today.

PoliticsNigeria Must Not Rely On Oil- Osinbajo by ceometromedia(op): 7:40pm On Apr 07, 2016
Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo has advocated that for the nation to move forward, the Federal and State Government must reduce dependence on sharing revenue made from oil sale.

Osibanjo spoke at the Economic Forum organized by the Nation Newspapers in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Thursday.

“We must look beyond oil because it disturbs us from looking to other sector. In order to move the country forward, we must reduce the Federal Government and state dependence on sharing revenue made from oil sales.

“The foundation for a strong economy demands that we have appropriate fiscal policies that will help the country that is arising from a very low rate of VAT and a low taxpayer’s base. We are focusing on increasing the country’s taxpayers base. We are committed to expanding the tax net,” he stated.

The Vice President also lamented that the price of oil had collapsed from $114 per barrel to under $40, saying that the issue therefore was that “we must move beyond oil which accounts for larger percentage of the country revenue. It is pathetic that a nation with over 170 million people benchmarked its budget on the price of oil.”

He said the present administration is determined to address the economic problems by prioritising key sectors.

“The way forward requires that we move from land and crude oil to production of petroleum products. That is rather than extract and exporting, the country must take full advantage of the oil sector and entire value chain. This will also assist us in making full use of our natural gas resources domestically and abroad. And it will aid us to fully implement long term laws in the oil sector.

“It is for this reason that the Federal Government will be prioritizing the adopting and execution of the National oil and gas master plan this year. We will also move beyond neglect of other sectors. While we believed that the oil sector was the only source of revenue, other sectors suffered and these sectors have the potential to drive the economy, provide jobs and others.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, in his speech said that for Nigeria’s economy to improve, its leaders must have the courage to take difficult and tough decisions, saying that the nation’s economy was at a critical threshold and thus, would require its leaders to think outside the box and come up with creative innovations that will trigger economic growth nationwide.

He lamented the fact that previous governments at the federal level failed to take advantage of the oil boom to grow other sectors of the economy, saying that the fall in price in the international oil market coupled with many years of corruption has made the economy vulnerable.

“It is very unfortunate that we wasted the golden opportunity to deploy the trillions of dollars earned from our oil exports to develop the critical sectors of the economy including power, agriculture, industries, solid minerals, transportation infrastructure among others. No doubt, if we had done the right thing as some other oil producing countries did, keeping in mind that crude oil is a finite resource, we would not be experiencing the devastating effect of oil price crash on the scale we are experiencing it now.

“We are now being forced to do, with pains, what we should have done with ease years ago. The task of charting a new direction for the economy is not going to be a tea party. Various policy options must be identified and assessed on the basis of our current situation and needs. Moving our economy forward requires thinking outside the box and doing things differently. We need creativity, innovation and the courage to take difficult and tough decisions.

“The leadership of the country at national and state levels must have the courage to take tough decisions and make sacrifices in the near term which will, in the long run, make our economy stronger and sustainable and, consequently result in prosperity across all regions of Nigeria,” he said.

Recommending strategies to improve the economy, Governor Ambode said that the nation must begin to explore and expand the opportunities that abound in inter-State relations and strengthen regional competitiveness by maximizing economies of scale, regional optimization of assets and endowments and mitigation of afflictions and natural disasters.

He listed other viable areas for inter-State collaboration to include transport infrastructure to facilitate market linkages, education, market development, human capacity building, security and intelligence sharing, saying that it was high time to move away from an oil driven economy.

“Prior to the oil boom era, Agriculture was the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy and contributed about 65 per cent to the country’s GDP and represented close to 70 per cent of total exports. Through farming, Nigeria was able to feed its population while major cash crops were exported to earn foreign exchange.

“From the cocoa and rubber plantations in the West, the groundnut pyramids and cotton in the north, to palm oil in the east; each region was identified by its economic areas of comparative advantage which were collectively harnessed towards ensuring food security and inclusive growth across the country.

“Given our current economic challenge, I believe it is time we take a cue from our old ‘playbook’ for a viable ‘game plan’ to revive our national economy. States and regions must once again begin to leverage on their respective areas of comparative advantage by establishing partnerships towards establishing inter-State or inter-regional commodity value chain. We must re-start inter-state/regional cooperation,” he said.

PoliticsRead President Buhari Birthday Message To Tinubu by ceometromedia(op): 12:52pm On Mar 28, 2016
Press statement from the presidency...

President Muhammadu Buhari warmly felicitates with the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as he clocks 64 years on March 29, 2016. The President believes the rising political profile of Asiwaju Tinubu since he was elected a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1992 is a testimony to his forthrightness, diligence and doggedness,
the same qualities that had endeared him to the electorate and given him all-round success as a private sector worker, a businessman and two-term Governor of Lagos State. As one of the pillars of the APC, President Buhari commends the visionary leadership style of the Asiwaju of Lagos, who is also the Jagaban of the Borgu Kingdom in Niger State, for creating a formidable opposition party in Nigeria that worked vigorously within a short period to oust a party that had been in power for 16 years.

The President assures the national leader that his patriotism and commitment to democracy and good governance, and his generous spirit will always be remembered and appreciated by generations of Nigerians. He prays that the Almighty God will grant the Asiwaju long life, good health, wisdom and prosperity as he steadfastly supports efforts to promote the development of Nigeria.

CrimePHOTOS: Nigerian Indicted For Fraud And Money Laundering In The U.S by ceometromedia(op): 12:28pm On Mar 27, 2016
A woman and others admitted they helped run a Nigerian scam that defrauded South Mississippi residents and many others through work-at-home and mystery shopper jobs and re-shipping scams. The victims were targeted through emails, online advertising, identities stolen, fake credit cards made. The ill-gotten goods and other illegal proceeds were re-shipped to Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, China, UAE, Haiti.

The suspects are: Ann Louise Franzen of Kiln; Gary Barnard, Shawn Ann White and Michele Gayle Fee, all of Manteca, Calif.; and Tara Lynn Thomas of Turlock, Calif.
The court records show they each pleaded guilty Tuesday, March 22 to conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States.

They and three others including a Nigerian, Funso Hassan, 26 and Anthony Shane Jeffers of Maryville, Tenn, were indicted in an investigation that revealed scams that solicited workers in mass emails, paid workers with bogus checks and money orders and used stolen identities and fake credit cards to purchase high-dollar items shipped to the workers, who re-shipped them to other countries.

Chief U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola Jr. has set their sentencing for June 21, 2016. They each face up to five years in prison, three years' probation and a fine of up to $250,000. Franzen, Barnard and Thomas remain free pending sentencing.
Funso Hassan and Jeffers are set for trial April 11, 2016. They face prosecution on charges to include money laundering and fraud. Hassan remains in custody.

The seven were charged in a 19-count indictment filed last July. The crimes included identity theft, theft of government funds, bank fraud, wire fraud and mail fraud. The investigation started after Customs and Border Patrol agents began intercepting packages containing millions of dollars in fake checks and money orders.

A Homeland Security Investigations probe revealed the conspiracy began Aug. 13, 2001 and continued through June 3, 2015. The scams solicited workers via emails and the Internet. Some workers were paid to receive and re-ship expensive items, including jewelry, purses, computers and cellphones. The items were bought with fake credit cards and stolen identities.

Workers were instructed to deposit checks in their accounts, keep part of it and send the rest to someone else. The ruse used fraudulent U.S. Postal Service labels and counterfeit money orders and the wiring of money with the use of fake identifications.

The indictment said ill-gotten merchandise was shipped to people in Nigeria and other countries, and actual money changed hands in wire transfers of as much as $113,000.

HSI agents have said they seized $3.1 million in bogus money from Franzen's home in 2012. She allegedly received bogus checks from Nigeria in a package labeled "local soap and sponge herbs". Smaller amounts were also from other defendants' homes in 2013.

Actual money changed hands through wire transfers of as high as $113,000 at a time, the indictment said.

PoliticsFG Sends Parents Of Kidnapped Chibok Girls To Cameroon by ceometromedia(op): 9:47pm On Mar 26, 2016
The Nigerian government is wasting no time in sending parents from the Chibok community of northeast Nigeria to neighbouring Cameroon to verify whether a suspected female suicide bomber is one of the schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram nearly two years ago.

And the need for urgency is further underscored by the fact that the would be bomber speaks English, Kanuri and Hausa and told interrogators she was attending school in Chibok before she was captured, according to local newspaper, L’oeil du Sahel.

Garba Shehu, spokesperson for Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, said the Nigerian High Commissioner in Cameroon, Hadiza Mustapha, has been in contact with Cameroonian authorities who have shown a willingness to assist the Nigerian government.

The abduction of about 270 school girls by Islamic militants from a school in Chibok on April 14, 2014, sparked international outrage and a campaign #bringbackourgirls. While about 50 of the girls managed to escape, 219 of these girls remain missing.

Military and local government sources on Friday reported that one of two girls arrested in northern Cameroon carrying explosives claimed to be one of the missing Chibok schoolgirls.

The girls were arrested after being stopped by local self-defence forces in Limani near the border with Nigeria that has been the target of frequent suicide bombings in recent months.

“We hope that the Chibok parents will be able to identify the girl and determine whether she is indeed one of their missing students,” Shehu told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a telephone interview in Abuja on Saturday.

Shehu said the government was keen to ascertain the girl’s identity so she can be brought back to Nigeria and possibly assist the government in investigations regarding the fate and whereabouts of the other missing Chibok girls.

He said the two parents from Chibok selected to embark on the trip to Cameroon are Yakubu Nkeki, chairman of the Chibok Abducted Girls Movement, and Yana Galang, the group’s women leader, whose 16-year-old daughter Rifkatu is among the missing.

The trip is being arranged by the government in partnership with the Murtala Muhammed Foundation in Nigeria, a non-government organisation which has been supporting the parents association and has offered to partly sponsor the trip to avoid any delays.

“If it is true, we are very happy about it. If we see her with our eyes, we will know where our girls are,” Galang told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Shehu said the two girls will be brought by the Cameroonian government to Douala, the country’s largest city, on Monday for further checks into their identities.

Former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan was criticized for his slow reaction to the Chibok abductions, seen by many as indicative of his response to Boko Haram, which at its strongest held large swathes of northeastern Nigeria.

Muhammadu Buhari, who defeated Jonathan in a 2015 election, ordered a new investigation into the kidnappings in January.

Christianity EtcI Give El Rufai 14 Days To Retrace His Steps Or Face The Wrath Of God - Dr Chris by ceometromedia(op): 8:07pm On Mar 26, 2016
Popular prophet, Dr. Chris Okafor came under a strange unction on Sunday, March 20, 2016 during service at his Liberation City Church headquarters, when he gave the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El Rufai an ultimatum regarding his impending Religious Bill, expected to be passed any moment.

The man of God started by reading out the details of the proposed bill from a mobile phone and then he screamed, “El Rufai, Herod, leave the church alone!”

He then went on to explain the potential anti-christian implications of the bill and warned that El Rufai was only being used to test run something that would later become a bigger plan to Islamize Nigeria, and that if El Rufai is left to go ahead with the bill unchallenged, that at least five more Northern States will follow suite, then all the Northern States and finally, the rest of Nigeria.

Before his congregation of several thousand worshippers and on live television viewed by millions of people in more 160 countries around the world, he sent a strong warning to Governor El Rufaideclaring “It will not happen in my time…it will not happen in your time…it will not be on record that it happened in my time…No! It will not happen!” to a thunderous applause from the congregation. He then continued “El Rufai take time! God is angry with you! You have 14 days to reverse that law or the wrath of God will come against you! You should count it, 14 days from today (March 20, 2016), he has 14 days to reverse and invalidate that law… if he refuses to do so, he should expect the wrath of God to visit him!

Speaking to journalist who thronged the worship center upon the declarations, the man of God said, “I prayed very well, and the Lord told me to go ahead and warn El Rufai. And I want you all to count 14 days from the day of the prophecy (March 20, 2016). If he does not retrace his steps and abandon that bill, God will take steps to honor His words. 14 days! Please count it”
