Business / Bill Gates To Pay Nigeria’s $76m Debt by ceometromedia: 11:01am On Jan 10, 2018 |
Nigeria has authorised Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to start the repayment of $76 million polio eradication loan to Japan. The Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, made this known in Abuja on Tuesday when she received a delegation of Japanese House of Councillors Parliamentarians. She said that the delegates were in Nigeria to assess the level of usage of Overseas Development Assistance (ODAs) extended to Nigeria since 2014. She added that the authority to trigger repayment was given to Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation following the eradication of polio in the country. She noted that the eradication of polio was made possible as a result of the ODA facility provided by the Japanese Government valued at $76 million in 2014. She recalled that the ODA was structured for repayment after four years and that by this development, Bill and Mellinda Gates Foundation would start repaying the facility to Japan this year. Adeosun while marketing Nigeria to the Japanese delegation noted that Nigeria was fast growing and evolving from negative areas to positive areas through its determined fight against corruption. She added that “because Nigeria is a middle income country, we will require the expertise of Japanese companies for infrastructure development. “Nigeria is a good place to invest because it is a rising investment destination. “I promise that the government will make life easy for Japanese investors wishing to do business in Nigeria.” In his address, the leader of the delegation, Mr Kiyoshi Ejima, described Nigeria as a power house with rich natural resources with which Japan tried to strengthen relationship with. Nigeria, he said, had set the target of becoming one of the top 20 economies by the year 2020 and he assured that “Japan will support Nigeria toward realising its 2020 target.” http://www.metronaija.ng/bill-gates-pay-nigerias-76m-debt/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

Politics / Kogi Medical Doctors Begin Strike by ceometromedia: 8:47pm On Jan 07, 2018 |
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Kogi on Sunday directed its members to resume strike on Monday over an alleged failure by the state government to meet their demands. Dr Godwin Tijani, the Chairman of the association, said in Lokoja that the inability of the state government to pay the doctors’ full salaries was unacceptable. Besides, Tijani said all the doctors’ associations and union dues as well as members’ cooperative society contributions were not remitted in full whereas 100 per cent taxes were deducted from their salaries. According to Tijani, even some doctors are yet to be paid. “Congress, therefore, resolved that all its members across the state should resume total and indefinite withdrawal of healthcare services from all hospitals in Kogi, with effects from 12:00 midnight on Sunday, Jan 7, 2018. “We want government to give a definite time line for the full implementation of adjusted CONMESS (new salary structure) for doctors in the state civil service and the accrued arrears since January, 2014. “Congress will reconvene once the state government responds appropriately to the aforementioned demands,” he said. Tijani, however, appreciated the commissioners for Health and Finance and others, who were at the congress to douse tension and ensure peaceful resolution of the matter. He also commended their members for their patience and understanding. It would be recalled that the Kogi NMA had suspended an earlier strike over the demand on June 22, 2017, following the state government assurances that it would meet their demands. It gave the government up till Dec. 31, 2017, to meet the demand or face strike. http://www.metronaija.ng/kogi-medical-doctors-begin-strike/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
Politics / PFN To FG: Treat Killer Herdsmen Like Terrorists by ceometromedia: 8:21am On Jan 06, 2018 |
The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), has called on the Federal Government to wake up to her responsibility by treating herdsmen killing people across Nigeria as terrorist and fight them in the same zeal it fought Boko Haram and bring them to justice immediately. National President of the PFN, Rev. Dr. Felix Omobude, in a press statement in Benin City, expressed worry over the way and manner the suspected marauders “continue to kill innocent Nigerians with ease and precision and escape justice.” The PFN pointed to “the continuous massacre of innocent Nigerians in Benue and Kaduna States,” as a case in point. Omobude who said the PFN is deeply concerned at the lackluster approach of our security agencies in bringing these mayhems to an end, added that the religious body is greatly disturbed by the constant killing of Nigerians by the rampaging herdsmen and urged the federal government to tackle the nagging problem decisively by bringing the perpetrators of these dastardly acts to justice. “PFN believes it’s time our security forces perform their primary duty of protecting the lives and property of Nigerians. Government at various levels should stop paying lip service to tackling the atrocities committed by these herdsmen, suspected to be of Fulani extraction, nationwide. This decimation of Communities with destruction of lives and properties must stop. “It must be stated now and clear that it is in our collective interest to maintain peace as no group has a monopoly of violence. “The PFN calls on the federal government to act and act fast in stopping the perpetrators of these crimes across the country and bring them to book. “PFN however calls on all well-meaning Nigerians to continue to exercise restraint even in the face of provocative and unwholesome activities of armed herdsmen and keep praying for peace and unity of Nigeria,” the statement said. http://www.metronaija.ng/pfn-fg-treat-killer-herdsmen-like-terrorists/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
Politics / 4501 Loaded Petrol Tankers Vanish In December by ceometromedia: 8:09pm On Jan 05, 2018 |
The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru said 4501 petrol trucks were simply untraceable, vanishing from the Nigerian radar, during the biting fuel supply crisis. “Due to massive diversion, hoarding, panic buying and smuggling, coupled with the information that three Direct Sales Direct Purchase Consortia had rejected October cargoes, there was insinuation of a supply gap,” he said Thursday at an investigative public hearing by a Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Petroleum Downstream, at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja. Baru disclosed that during the period, NNPC could not track the movement of 4,501 trucks representing the quantity of the disappeared products. According to him, the nation lost about 148,533,000 million litres of fuel to the suspected diversion during the December fuel crisis. The NNPC GMD listed some of the key factors which were responsible for the crisis to include insufficient reserve, clearance speed, supply gap, diversion, hoarding, panic buying and smuggling. He noted that prior to the crises, NNPC had 1.9 billion litres strategic reserve of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which would have lasted for 53 days but that due to panic buying, diversion and hoarding, the Corporation was unable to cope with the daily nation consumption of 37 million litres of PMS, which led to the presence of long queues at petrol stations across the country. He however said that NNPC took some urgent steps to resolve the scarcity which included but not limited to the immediate activation of war room, additional imports to increase days sufficiency, 24-hour operations in all NNPC Depots and mega stations; sustained media and stakeholders engagements; increased monitoring, surveillance and sanctions as well as production at Kaduna and Port Harcourt refineries put at 3 million daily. Baru also used the opportunity to call on the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) to review the pricing template and landing cost. He also asked the National Assembly to approve outstanding subsidy payments and debts to marketers. http://www.metronaija.ng/4501-loaded-petrol-tankers-vanish-december/ cc:lalasticlala mynd44 |
