Politics / Wike To Honour Rotimi Amaechi With An Award by ceometromedia: 12:11pm On May 24, 2017
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has listed his arch-rival, Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, among several persons to be honoured by the state.

Prospective honourees will be honoured for their individual contributions to the development of Rivers State.

A list of honourees prepared by the Jubilee Anniversary Committee set up by Mr. Wike had Mr. Amaechi’s name at number 18 amongst 29 people to be awarded Grand Service Star of Rivers State.

Former Nigerian leaders Goodluck Jonathan and Yakubu Gowon are also on the list, alongside late activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, who would be honoured posthumously.

Mr. Amaechi served as governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015. Mr. Wike succeeded him.

The awards ceremony is slated to hold on May 27 in Port Harcourt, the state capital, according to the program pamphlet .

It was not immediately clear if the minister would accept the honour or personally show up to receive his medal from Mr. Wike, with whom he’d been locked in bitter political contest for more than three years.

Mr. Amaechi’s spokesperson, David Iyofor, said he was not aware of his principal being identified amongst those to be honoured.

Although Mr. Wike once served as Mr. Amaechi’s chief of staff during the former’s first term from 2007 to 2011, the duo soon fell out with each other shortly after Mr. Wike was appointed as Minister of State foe Education by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Mr. Wike was scheming to succeed Mr. Amaechi in office, but the then governor had a different plan.

The disagreement soon snowballed into an all-out political chaos between the duo.

When a friction ensued between Mr. Amaechi and former First Lady Patience Jonathan, Mr. Wike took sides with the latter.

The award comes even as Mr. Wike appears to intensify attacks against his predecessor.

Within the last few weeks, the governor has levelled many allegations against the minister.

Shortly after a huge stash of cash was discovered in an apartment in Ikoyi, Mr. Wike took to media to link Mr. Amaechi with the money.

The claim turned out to be false after it was confirmed that the money belonged to the National Intelligence Agency.

On Monday, the governor accused Mr. Amaechi of raising a cult militia in the state, to prepare for 2019 elections.

Mr. Amaechi denied the allegation.

Politics / Dedication Of Church Built By Governor Wike (Photos) by ceometromedia: 9:11pm On May 23, 2017
The Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh has called on leaders at all levels to commit themselves to the ideals of servant-leadership.

Performing the dedication of The Chapel of Everlasting Grace built by the Wike administration for worship at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Primate Okoh said that leaders must lead with passion, strength and courage .lll

He stated that leadership is not what everyone should aspire to, because it requires sacrifice and personal loss.

Primate Okoh said: "If you don't have the ability to serve, please stay away from leadership ".

He congratulated the people of Rivers State for electing a leader who has continued to serve them through the initiation and execution of meaningful projects.

He said: "I congratulate the governor for fulfilling his promise to the church by building an Ecumenical Centre for Christians. There are many dividends of democracy in the state ".

The cleric said that God's presence in the Chapel of Everlasting Grace will always attract blessing to all those who worship in it.

He urged the concerned authority to complete the Bodo-Bonny road, to save the Bonny people from exposure to the elements. He said a community that generates the wealth of the country cannot suffer such neglect.

Speaking after the dedication of The Chapel of Everlasting Grace, Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike said he was motivated to construct the Chapel because of the need to have a befitting place of Christian worship in Government House.

He reiterated his commitment to the church. He said that his decision to build a chapel in Government House and the State Ecumenical Centre were callouts of the interaction he had with Christian leaders during the campaign.

Governor Wike stated that during the campaign, the opposition circulated concocted stories that he belonged to a cult. He said that he assured the clerics at the interaction section before the election that he has never been a cult member.

He said: "For us, our hope is in God. We cannot do without God."

On the Bodo -Bonny Bridge abandoned by the Federal Government, Governor Wike urged that it should be completed to give the Bonny people a sense of belonging.

"Let the Federal Government come and complete the Bodo-Bonny bridge", he said.

Christian leaders and senior government officials witnessed the dedication of The Chapel of Everlasting Grace.

Politics / PHOTOS: Nigerians Join EFCC To March Against Corruption In Lagos by ceometromedia: 8:01pm On May 23, 2017
Nigerians across the country rallied against corruption on Tuesday during the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s anti-corruption march, led by Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu.

The anti-graft agency hosted the walk in order to raise awareness of the EFCC’s fight against corruption.

Speaking in Lagos, EFCC Acting Head of Operations Mohammed Rabo described the walk as a way of showing the world that the agency and country will not give up on the fight against corruption. Mr. Rabo added that though corruption is fighting back, the agency is also recording success in its bid to eradicate corruption in Nigeria.

“This is a fight we shall fight to the end. It is a fight for everybody and the nation and we shall not stop. Corruption is the highest evil in the nation and we shall continue to fight and not get tired.

“Corruption is fighting back seriously, but we are giving it punches and we shall show that we are equal to the task,” he told a crowd in Lagos.

Among the participants in the walk was Joe Odumakin, president of the Women Arise for Change Initiative. She challenged the anti-graft agency to declare a state of emergency within the economic sector of the country to enable corruption to be fought to the end.

“Nigerians must own the fight against corruption. The people should unite against corruption for us to persevere against corruption.

“If the people do not rise, corruption will kill all of us. A state of emergency should be declared within the sector so that corruption will know it has become an orphan and the perpetrators should be brought to book,” she declared.

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong was also present and called on Nigerians to support the EFCC’s fight against corruption.

“The looters of this country should not be allowed to steal and loot unchallenged. This is part of an awareness program and a strategy to mobilize people. Though some cases may be lost, it does not mean the fight has been lost.

“The people should continue to support the fight against corruption because we don’t have an alternative other than to support the fight against corruption,” he said.

Family / 6 Things To Never Have In Your Home by ceometromedia: 12:09pm On May 23, 2017
Your home should be your haven, a safe place you can relax, unwind and be at peace. However, to achieve this there are certain things you should get out of your home. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 6 things to never bring into your home.

Pictures

Not just any picture, but pictures of people you don’t really like, pictures of people who hurt you deeply and pictures of those you don’t know at all or those who died tragically. Generally, avoid having pictures of people or events that sadden you, in your home. You would think most people will know this, but most people typically do the opposite and continually deny themselves the opportunity to overcome the bad aura from the past.

Old Worn Shoes

If they are ripped, worn or no longer in use, you should dump them. There’s no need to have them in your home taking up space that can be used house better things. Besides, you’ll be sparing yourself the unsettling smell of old worn shoe.

Broken Objects

If it’s broken, throw it out and replace it (if you can or if you want to). Avoid keeping broken items in your home, regardless of how expensive they are or regardless of their emotional significance. You can try to repair it or put it together if you can, but keep in mind that this should be a temporary solution pending when you can replace it. Avoid managing broken things for a long period. Aside being improper, it can be dangerous.

Old Irrelevant Periodicals

Get rid of old newspapers or magazines you no longer need to avoid cluttering your home and to prevent pests and insects from hiding in or around them. You might have read and loved these periodicals but unless they are in some way relevant, it’s advised you get rid of them to create space for new inspiring material.

Clothes You Don’t Wear

It’s normal to hold on to clothing in case the style comes back into fashion or in case they might fit you again someday, but sometimes it just doesn’t happen that way. At this point, you therefore need to get rid of them to create space for clothes you do love and are more likely to wear. Besides, giving the clothes out to a charity home can be quite emotionally fulfilling.

Out-of-Date Technology and Cords

We are all guilty of this. Sitting at some area or corner of our home, there are one or two out-of-date tech items and corresponding cords and adaptors we hardly ever or might even never use. Why keep these purposeless items in your home? Consider throwing them out, donating or reselling some of these out-of-date tech items and corresponding cords, and avoid wasting time looking for the tech items you actually use amidst the clutter.

Travel / Pedestrians Safety Tips For Crossing Lagos Roads by ceometromedia: 9:14am On May 12, 2017
5 Pedestrians Safety Tips For Crossing Lagos Roads

Lagos roads are very busy. You will find trailers, SUVs, and Danfos on the highway. Most of the drivers of these vehicles do not care about pedestrians nor any traffic rules. They simply drive with reckless abandon as they feel they own the road. This oftentimes than not put pedestrians in danger of being knocked down by oncoming and overspeeding vehicles. To keep you safe and avoid any accidents, Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency shares tips for crossing Lagos roads.

Never stroll on Zebra crossing

Traffic rules demand that drivers stop when they see pedestrians walking on Zebra crossing. However, in Lagos, they won't stop. They will continue driving. So to be on the safe side, it is better you run when using the Zebra crossing. In fact, if they see you strolling, the driver will shout at you to get away from the road.

Ditch anything that reduces vision or hearing

You have to be conscious of your ambience when crossing a road in Lagos, Hence, you should ditch everything that reduces vision or hearing. This is for those who wear dark shades and plug their ears. A vehicle can come from nowhere and you may probably be knocked down.

Plead with drivers to allow you cross

Since the drivers do not respect pedestrians or obey traffic rules except when LASTMA officials are present, you should plead with them to allow you cross. That way, you will not spend minutes waiting for the road to be clear before you cross.

Never assume the driver will stop

Drivers in Lagos feel that they own the road. Hence, they rarely stop for any pedestrian to cross the road. Consequently, do not assume that they will stop. You should wait until the road is clear before you cross.

Use the pedestrian bridge

If there is a pedestrian bridge, you should use it. It is safer. Besides, you will be arrested if you cross the road when there is a pedestrian bridge right in front of you.

Politics / Lagos Releases N1.6 Billion To 311 Retirees by ceometromedia: 4:12pm On May 02, 2017
The Lagos State Government has released the sum of N1.6 billion as benefit payment to 311 retirees from the Mainstream Civil Service, Local Governments, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Teachers Establishments and Pensions Office (TEPO) and other Parastatals of Government for the month of April.

The State Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Benson Oke Akintola, who disclosed this while speaking at the 38th Retirement Benefit Bond Presentation Ceremony recently at NECA House Auditorium, Ikeja said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has consistently demonstrated his commitment to the Post- Service welfare of its workers through the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC).

He said the determination of ensuring retirees’ comfort was the reason for the consistent monthly contribution into the Retirement Savings Account of Public servants by the present administration, adding that it is accorded the same priority as that of payment of salaries.

According to Dr. Akintola, “It is a positive history that, the Lagos state Government has been winning the National Pension Commission’s award for the Best Pensions compliant State in the Federation. We aim to maintain this rating by continuing and improving on the timely payment of all pensions and other applicable benefits to our retiring workers upon disengagement from service”.

He said the State Government has never failed to remit monthly contributions into the Retirement Savings Account of workers, which, as at March, 2017 has ensured that about N78,592 billion had been credited into employees retirees Savings Accounts maintained by ten Pension Fund Administrators.

He said: “In spite of the onerous funding obligations under the Contributory Pension Scheme, the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has exhibited a persistent will in meeting up”.

“Similarly, we have also been consistent in setting aside the funds for the payment of accrued rights as provided for in the Pension Reform Law. On over 13,676 retirees /withdrawn staff, the State government has paid accrued pension rights of about N61, 422.560 billion since the commencement of the Retirement Benefit Bond Certificate Presentations in 2010”, the Commissioner added.

He assured the retirees that the Lagos State Government through LASPEC will continue to ensure that Public Service retirees not only get what is due to them statutorily but also continue to receive, through other Agencies and Programmes, additional support and assistance that will add value to their lives in retirement.

Akintola, however, advised the retirees not to hesitate to contact LASPEC or even the Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions should they require clarifications or advice regarding their retirement.

Speaking earlier, the Director-General, LASPEC, Mrs. Folashade Onanuga said that the immeasurable commitment of the Lagos State Governor to the sustenance of the Contributory Pension Scheme in order to give the retirees a life of financial empowerment cannot be overemphasised.

“We have received support from the Government on our ICT infrastructure and the calibre of personnel recruited/deployed to the Commission. Our interaction with our customers have been further enhanced with our 24/7 interactive Voice Response (IVR) application” she said.

The Director General said that between August 2015 and April, 2017, the State Government through LASPEC has paid accrued pension rights totalling the sum of N27,409.56 billion into the RSA of 6,270 retirees. In essence, she said that the State’s Government funding of employees’ pension rights under the Contributory Pension Scheme in a period of 10 years is over N140 billion.

While enjoining all the beneficiaries to take very good care of their health and physical well-being as well as desist from frivolous spending, she informed beneficiaries that the two exit options i.e. Programmed Withdrawal and Annuity for receipt of pension benefit monthly are now available.

Politics / Workers Day: Ajimobi To Clear Workers’ Salary Arrears by ceometromedia: 7:38pm On Apr 30, 2017
Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has promised to spare no effort in ensuring that the state clears the four months outstanding salaries of workers in the state.

He made the disclosure in a statement signed by his Special Adviser, Communication and Strategy, Mr Yomi Layinka on Sunday, ahead of the commemoration of 2017 Workers’ Day celebration.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state owes the workers four months salaries, having cleared the backlog till December 2016.

Ajimobi urged the workers to continue to put in their best and key into the state government’s reform agenda aimed at enhancing productivity.

“I congratulate the entire workforce in the state, including those in the private and informal sectors.

“This year’s workers day has provided another opportunity for you all to take stock and assess your performance.

“I can say without any equivocation that workers in the state are among the very best you can find anywhere in the country.

“But, for the few yet to embrace the new order of hard work, accountability, dedication and commitment, I urge you join the trend,” he said.

He said that the government was exploring many opportunities to enhance the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state, promising that no effort would be spared to clear the four months salary arrears.

“No doubt, times are hard because of the pervading poor state of the economy.

“I feel your pains and I’m optimistic that we shall soon sing a new song of prosperity and abundance. May none of you be missing by that time,.” he said.

Ajimobi prayed for a hazard-free 2017 for workers in the state as the year enters the second quarter, and that God would give them good health to celebrate more workers’ days to come. (NAN)

Politics / Ambode Is Making Life Worth Living For Lagosians- Obasanjo by ceometromedia: 2:05pm On Apr 29, 2017
Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday evening showered encomium on the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode for his administration’s programmes and policies at improving the lives of the people of the State.

Speaking at the 2017 Annual Dinner and Awards of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in Lagos, the former president said he had taken notice of the developmental strides of Governor Ambode, which according to him, are geared towards making life more comfortable for the people.

“I can see the little things you are doing here and there to make life worth living for the people of Lagos. Keep it up," Obasanjo said to the Governor.

While urging the Governor to sustain the good work he was doing, he stressed the need for the country to do more on ensuring an enabling environment that would boost investors’ confidence to do business in Nigeria.

According to the former president who was also an award recipient, "There are great opportunities out there, as government we need to create ways for investments and conducive conditions for investments to thrive".

On his part, State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, who also received an award described it as a crowning moment for his career, adding that reaching the pinnacle of his career 30 years after becoming a chartered accountant- a feat he noted as a dream come true.

Governor Ambode, who took time to recall his early days and his quest to become an Accountant, said he was determined to work hard to become one.

“If there is any award that has meaning to me, today’s award is a crowning moment for me, my story and my career.

“When I was about 12 years old, I had an encounter with one of my Dad’s friends who was an Accountant. He asked me what I wanted to become. I told him I wanted to be an Accountant and he said “You? You can’t be an Accountant.” He must have said this because I used to be very playful.

“That night, as I went to bed, I told myself that I will be the best of all Accountants. I determined to work hard to achieve this. At the age of 21, I graduated with a B.sc in Accounting from UNILAG.

“Exactly, 30 years ago, at the age of 24, I became a Chartered Accountant and completed my Masters Programme in Accounting. I have practiced Accounting as a Chartered Accountant for 30 years. 30 years after my qualification, this great Institute has recognised me with the highest merit award, the highest achievement of my career,” Governor Ambode said.

While alluding to the fact that his career success was as a result of his resilience to become an Accountant and achieve his life goal, the Governor said he had made up his mind to give back to humanity for the rest of his life.

“I want to use this platform to encourage others to be resilient. Never give up on your ambition. Stay on your conviction. You will never go wrong. We can all learn from the motto of the Institute – Accuracy and Integrity,” Governor Ambode said.

Politics / Police Discover Forest Where Kidnappers Bury Victims In Enugu by ceometromedia: 8:34am On Mar 25, 2017
The police in Enugu have discovered a shallow grave where the remains of the former Chief Security Officer for Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of the state, Mr Ejiofor Enechi, and others were buried after being killed by daredevil kidnappers.

The shocking discovery was made on March 15, 2017, at the Aniocha Forest, Nimbo local government, after two top members of the kidnap gang – Chijioke Ozor alias Earthquake and one Anselem Ngana – were nabbed following a fierce gun battle with members of the police anti- kidnap gang who trailed the suspects to their hideout.

It was discovered that the two kingpins were members of the banned Oda Nimbo Vigilante Group in the area who had been involved in the kidnap of over 20 persons along the Nsukka- Uzo-Uwani – Onitsha road.

About 30 other members of the dreaded group are being hunted by security agents following the gruesome murder of Ejiofor after his relatives had paid N2 million ransom for his release.

Confirming the arrest, Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Superintendent Ebere Amaraizu, said that Earthquake led the police to the shallow grave in the forest where the remains were exhumed.

“Our detectives discovered the shallow grave and the shrine where the gangsters took their victims to at the Aniocha Forest which stretches to Eshi River in Kogi State. Apart from Ejiofor’s remains, they found several motorcycles of other victims who must have been killed by same members of the vigilante group. Each time they kidnapped their victims, they blamed the action on Fulani herdsmen but it is now clear that the allegations against the Fulani herdsmen were diversionary,” he said.

“The forest is popularly known as Malaysia or Ugbo Ekwuru behind the Ugwuijoro Village in Nimbo. Anselem Ngana is from Akpama Nimbo and he was one of those in charge of monitoring Ejifor’s movements for other members of Oda Nimbo Vigilante group. Earthquake was among those who took him to the bush where he was allegedly murdered instead of the shrine. Over 30 members of the killer gang are still on the run and we are on their hot chase.”

Business / Surplus Dollars Hit Nigeria Market by ceometromedia: 8:21am On Mar 25, 2017
The surplus supply of dollars has again jolted speculators and caused a further increase in value of the Naira.

The foreign exchange market closed on Friday without selling off all the foreign currency released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Fresh 100 million dollars was released at the interbank market to meet customers’ demands, but the dealers were only able to pick about 81.35 million dollars, leaving surplus.

Mr Isaac Okorafor, the Acting Director, Corporate Communications, CBN, attributed the inability of authorised dealers to pick up the entire offer of the CBN to increasing dollar supply.

In a statement, he said another reason was the current sense of apprehension among dealers who anticipate a further crash in the rate of the dollar.

He reiterated the determination of the Bank to sustain its current interventions in the market.

“Those who doubt the capacity of the Bank to sustain the intervention in the FOREX market are beginning to have a change of mind,” he said.

The Naira has continued to sustain its ride against major currencies, especially the United States dollar, since CBN consistently pumped in more dollars.

The dollar exchanged at about N380 in Abuja, and N385 to N390 in Lagos.

At the Bureau De Change (BDC) window, the Naira was sold at N399 to the dollar, while the pound sterling and the Euro were sold at N500 and N400.

The Nigerian currency appreciated at the interbank market, closing at N307 to the dollar.

Traders believe that the continued intervention by the CBN have triggered further apprehension among speculators, who anticipate further losses given the continued crash of the dollar.

Some BDCs in Abuja stopped selling dollar due to the current price in order to curtail further losses, but they were opened to customers willing to sell at N370 to a dollar.

An Abuja-based BDC operator, said besides the dollar sales by the CBN, steady supply have been coming in from individuals who had once hoarded the currency for whatever purpose.

The President of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, said that appreciation of the Naira, especially in Abuja though good, was causing panic among BDCs.

He said this was because the CBN presently sells dollars to BDCs at N381 per dollar, and expects them to sell to the public at N399 per dollar.

Gwadabe called attention to the sharp difference between the Lagos and Abuja parallel market exchange rates.

He said the Abuja market was smaller in terms of demand, being dominated by civil servants, while Lagos has higher demand as it service most private businesses in the country.

Experts are of the opinion that the dollar may likely sell even lower than N380 during the weekend as the future looks dim for the rise of the currency. (NAN)
