Politics › D‪isplaced Traders Protest In Ibadan by chaloner(op): 12:08am On Jun 12, 2013
Hundreds of displaced traders at the Old Scout Camp Market in Molete, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, staged a protest over alleged inequitable allocation of new shops.

The traders, under the aegis of the Amazon Women Organisation, marched from the market to the nearby Splash FM Radio to register their displeasure.

The peaceful protest, which attracted scores of residents, hindered human and vehicular movement on the busy Molete road.

The spokesperson of the group, Bukola Adegoke, said the protesters had learnt that a new list of traders was being compiled for shop allocation at their expense.

“We gathered that the Ministry of Environment and Habitat has hijacked the exercise from the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Industry, which is supposed to handle it,” she said.

Adegoke claimed that the protesters were being short-changed in the allocation of shops on the ground that many of them were petty traders.

She also accused some members of the Oyo State Youth Empowerment Scheme (YES-O) of being involved in the alleged illegal allocation of shops.

However, Cosmos Oni, the Information Officer in the Oyo State Ministry of Environment and Habitat, said that his ministry had nothing to do with shop allocation.

“Allocation of shops at the Old Camp Market is the duty of the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Industry,” he said.

Last year, under its Urban Renewal Programme, the state government issued quit notices to traders at Molete, Ogunpa, and Challenge areas of Ibadan.

The displaced traders regrouped at the Old Scout Camp before they were again dislodged, with many of them trading on the highways.

A senior lecturer and four other staff members of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) have been sacked for altering students’ grades.

A statement signed by Ossy Ugwuoti, the Director of Public Relations of the university, listed the affected staff members as Ibiyemi Ariyo, Senior Lecturer; Dr. Ikechukwu Onah, Lecturer II; Chikezie Aneke, Assistant Lecturer; Nnamdi Okomba, Assistant Lecturer, and Christy Okoro, Computer Operator, all from the Department of Computer Engineering.

According to the statement, Onah, who was the head of the department, engaged the others in the alteration of the grades submitted to him by lecturers during the computation of final year results.

The university’s governing council, which took the decision to sack the offending members of staff, warned that it would continue to take severe disciplinary action against any worker involved in any form of academic fraud.

Delays at numerous military checkpoints and harsh weather are killing chicks travelling by road.

There are strong indications that scarcity of chickens may hit Borno state during the coming Islamic fasting period and days beyond as Otta Farms, the chief supplier of poultry to the state, has stopped delivering products to the state directly.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that due to the worsening state of the Boko Haram-induced insecurity, Otta Farms had in the past one year stopped flying in Day-old chicks and other products to Borno state.

emmysenior: It goes a long way to show that all our politicians aren't there to serve our interest(s). What they are all concerned about is their pocket and infinite access to power as well as their immediate families.

Forget about them my brethren; if they do any good, it is all aimed at getting 100000000% gain in return, all their deeds either good or bad are selfish.

What I'm saying in essence is that, if truly they are there to serve our interests, campaigning for 2015 should be the last thing on their minds as of now...

One thing they failed to realize is that, the political paradigm of have shifted to where most people now vote for performing aspirants irrespective of the monies been shared by other thieves. E.g Oshiomole.
so many points here, but what are they thinking? may bethey taught we are pendulum bob that can always be swing to and fro... i wonder a country that want to use two whole years for campaign... tell me our politicians are ok and i will tell you that my grand mother is still a virgin. all i know is ,Nigerians are waking up, just that we snore much during sleeping. dora really made me sick for years..
Politics › Watch Boxing Legend Bash Ali Rough-handled By Sports Ministers Security Goons by chaloner(op):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJCgDr6YHJE

Nigerian boxing legend, Bash Ali, 57, was manhandled by policemen after attempting to see the Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi in Abuja on Thursday June 6th.

According to the Nigerian Telegraph, the boxer, who is seeking to become the oldest man to hold a world boxing title defence, and wants to have his defence staged in Nigeria, jostled to get an audience with President Jonathan, who was at the Abuja National Stadium to inaugurate ‘Rhythm ‘N’ Play on Thursday. Ali scuffled with the president’s aides, which got the attention of Jonathan. After having been allowed to approach the president, and after stating his mission, Jonathan directed that the boxer see the Minister of Sports for further discussion on the matter.

Ali however alleged that when he tried to see Abdullahi at a private luncheon held with celebrities and a few others, he was manhandled by the minister’s aides and denied audience with the minister.
“There is no respect in this country for the people who should be respected,” Ali fumed. “How can I, when all I am trying to do is lift up my country’s name, be assaulted by a bunch of scoundrels all in the name of protecting their master? I was already a world champion when they were in primary school. this is not fair.

Politics › 2015 Elections: INEC Warns Politicians Against Early Campaigns by chaloner(op): 11:15pm On Jun 09, 2013
we are in 2013 and election is in 2015, but what im seeing is as if the election is going to hold tomorrow. this is not a sign of good democracy and INEC is not happy about that, as stated by JEGA "Any politician who openly campaigns or seeks support for his political ambitions ahead of 2015 risks being arrested.

This warning is coming from the independent national electoral commission, following an observation that campaign posters are being indiscriminately displayed while electioneering broadcasts are being aired outside statutory provisions in the electoral act.

According to INEC, this act by some politicians and registered political parties is unacceptable and capable of truncating Nigeria’s democracy.

INEC adds “this trend is unhealthy and portends ill for the political process; indeed it is a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.”

INEC’s chairman Professor Attahiru Jega therefore warns that the commission may be forced to apply the law of it is not stopped."

Politics › Nigeria’s Silent War On Boko Haram by chaloner(op): 3:59pm On Jun 06, 2013
I spent nearly two weeks in Maiduguri, reporting on the Nigerian army’s offensive against Boko Haram. The group has been behind many bombings and thousands of deaths in Nigeria, and Maiduguri has been its base. The group says it wants a strict form of Islamic law imposed across Nigeria.

During my time in Maiduguri I reported on public opinion on the fighting. On women and children kidnapped by Boko Haram and liberated by Nigerian forces, and the number civilian casualties. One soldier gave a powerful eyewitness account of how he saw many civilians killed.

Even though I was able to get these three reports out, I come away from the fighting against Boko Haram feeling like it’s a silent war. During our time in Maiduguri we faced restrictions on where we could go.

We faced restrictions on who we could talk to. We faced restrictions on what we could film. And we were not permitted to go to the frontline.

State of emergency

Humanitarian organisations and the media still remain restricted from going to areas where fighting between the Nigerian military and Boko Haram has been taking place – nearly three weeks since the fighting started.

As if that were not bad enough, mobile phone networks have been cut off by the authorities since the fighting started on May 15. It has meant that millions of people in the region have not been able to communicate what they’re seeing and experiencing of the war, or the impact of the state of emergency that was declared by President Goodluck Jonathan, which gave a green light for the fighting to start.

Millions of people have not been able to reach family and friends in the region. Millions of people have not been able to conduct business. Millions of people have not been able to raise the alarm, or call for help, in any kinds of circumstances.

That’s why I call the Nigerian army’s offensive against Boko Haram the silent war.

It’s not clear how long it will go on for. There have been unconfirmed reports saying the state of emergency and war against Boko Haram could last for three to six months. However, the Nigerian military has been providing daily updates of their successes fighting the group, so it may be far shorter.

The question is; what will the impact of this silent war be on the millions of people living in the northeast? Will it rid the region of Boko Haram? That’s the hope and the prayer of every Nigerian. Or will Boko Haram somehow find a way of re-grouping, and re-emerging at some date in the future? Only time will tell.

Romance › Big Brother Africa: Natasha Obsessed With S*x? See How by chaloner(op):
Is Natasha obsessed with s*x or what?

It is starting to seem like it, as not a day goes by in the Ruby House without the unabashed Ruby lass sharing her opinions on matters of the carnal nature.

nasty-natasha_lg_74d1aab9

Her latest s*x rant today was about husbands that cheat and couples that have s*x without protection which lead to some heated conversation in the Ruby bedroom.

Clearly the motherly Malawian saw fit to take it upon herself to play s*x educator to her fellow Housemates. “You have to be a good counsellor and be the voice,” she insisted at the end of her conversation. Well okay then, Natasha.

So what do you think of Natasha’s dirty talks? Do you think she is entertaining and educational or just annoying

Politics › Don’t Punish Sect Members Who Turn Selves In, Abdulsalami Pleads With FG by chaloner(op):
A former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, on Tuesday urged members of the Boko Haram sect to embrace dialogue.

Mr. Abubakar gave the charge when the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenge in the North visited him at his residence in Minna.

He appealed to the sect members to meet the committee to discuss their grievances, saying that dialogue was the only out.

“I implore Nigerians to pray for the sect members to have a change of heart and accept dialogue to discuss their grievances and seek peace.

“If you go to the North, especially Borno and Yobe where this is happening, you will weep. Women have turned widows and children orphans, while other people are separated from one another.

“In the name of their conscience, in the name of Allah which they profess, they should lay down their arms and embrace dialogue to end the violence.

“Violence doesn’t solve problem, you must come to the table, without doing that your grievances are meaningless.”

Mr. Abubakar also advised the committee to thread with caution, saying, “The eyes of the whole world are on you to see what you can do and what you can come up with”.

He described the carnage going on in the North as senseless, appealing to the committee not to allow the Federal Government to punish sect members who turned themselves in.

“The unemployed, but educated youths are a threat to peace in any society, while government cannot employ everybody, we must create the right environment for them to thrive,” Mr. Abubakar stated.

The Chairman of the committee, Kabiru Turaki, urged Mr. Abubakar to persuade leaders of the sect to come out and dialogue with the committee.
