A 22-year-old man, Terry Umuokoro, who makes a living as a pickpocket, has been arrested by the Apapa Police Division. Also in custody are five others, suspected to have taken part in a robbery operation at Senator Muse Road, Apapa in June 2013. Umuokoro was arrested last week at a hotel along Ojo Road, Ajegunle, Lagos. He had allegedly resided at the hotel for two months. But the suspect denied being part of any robbery operation. Umukoro explained that he was a pickpocket. He said, “I pick pockets for a living, I am not a robber. I started in January 2013 because I had no job after completing my secondary school education.” Explaining how he operates, the suspects said he usually armed himself with a school bag to create the appearance of a university undergraduate. He said he would then board as many commercial buses as possible, where he would pick the pockets of unsuspecting passengers. His loot included money andphones. He said, “I only steal Nokia phones because you can sell them easily. I steal about three phones daily and have a buyer at Boundary bus stop in Ajegunle. I give him the phones and getpaid in return. I make about N10,000 daily.” Due to the success of his trade, Umuokoro allegedly moved out of his family home to the hotel at Ojo road where a room goes at a rate of N5, 000 daily. The other suspects, Desmond Ozore, Solomon Mibien, Nelson Mbabie, Jamiu Adigun and Akeem Apejoye, were initially arrested at the same hotel by the Victoria Garden City Police Post after a Blackberry Bold 5 which was stolen from a resident at Senator Museroad, was found with Ozore’s girlfriend. On June 4 2013, two buildings were robbed on Senator Muse Road and valuables such as BlackBerrys, laptopsand money were allegedly taken by the armed robbers. One of the stolen phones was traced to Ozore’s girlfriend who claimed that he had given her the phone. Ozore said, “I am not a robber, none ofmy friends are. We are all into internet fraud. We stayed in the hotel because we need uninterrupted electricity. “I bought the phone for N26,000 fromMibien. I never knew it was stolen.” Mibien denied being part of the robbery gang and claimed he also bought the phone from another friend who is currently at large. There was no response from the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide. She did not respond to calls or text messages to her phone. |
Some teachers marking examination scripts of students who wrote the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSSCE), on Monday urged the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to make the exercise more attractive by enhancing their pay. Some of the markers, who sought anonymity, said that the current payment of an average of N13 per script was not commensurate to the marking exercise. One of them, a mathematics teacher in a public school in Akure, said that she decided to mark this year’s SSCE scripts to improve on her teaching technique. “I decided to mark this year’s scripts not because of the meagre pay but to further discover weaknesses and challenges of students in solving equations in exams,” she said. She noted that if the payment was attractive, subject specialists would be more interested in marking, thereby improving productivity and efficiency in the field. ``I get paid N12.38 for marking one mathematics script, and I marked 300 scripts which would attract only N11,800, while coordinators for mathematics get N2,868 for supervision.” According to an English Language teacher in a unity school in Benin, the payment for marking English language is discouraging, because of the length of essays and stories. “Marking English Language is peculiar and demanding for just N14; we have to read through the lines, observing the grammar and tense: only a few in dire need of money would risk the stress,” she said. She noted that many English Language teachers were getting discouraged by the poor remuneration. A Geography teacher, who marked scripts in Jos, Plateau State said markers of SSSCE scripts should be given special consideration. Another teacher, who simply gave his name as Jerome, said apart from the pay, the process of indicating those suspected to have been involved in malpractice was too severe. He said that the process the markers had to follow to indicate such students was rigorous. A Chemistry teacher in Ago Iwoye, Ogun, Paul Newman said he did not take up marking of the scripts because of the meagre pay and the short period for the exercise. A Chemistry teacher in a missionary school in Idimu, Lagos, Miss Angela Ogbor, said training the markers would also improve their performance. Stipends paid for script coordination was N2, 868.75, except English and Literature coordinators who get N3,206.25. Markers get N1,407. 00 for attendance and N13.50 per script as ``lump sum’’. Those who mark all subjects get N12.38 per script as marking fee, except English Language and Literature markers who get N14 per script. Reacting to the claims of the teachers, Deputy Registrar of WAEC, Mrs. Comfort Agu, said that the amount being paid the markers was not too small. She noted that when the ``lump sum’’ and the payment per script were put together, a marker got over N20 per script, adding that there was no immediate plan for increment. (NAN) |
One of the best ways to make a statement is to do something that no one has ever done before, well this was the case as 300,000 pupils representing more than 600 public schools in Lagos made history by simultaneously brushing their teeth for 60 seconds across different locations in the state. India held the previous record; achieving the fit with 177,003 pupils in 2007. The new Guiness Book of Records entry began atexactly 2:15pm on Thursday after Dr. Lawal Bakare, the founder of HEIT Solutions, and the convener of the Tooth Brushing Challenge Project, had certified that each of the participants has a tooth brush and toothpaste provided by Unilever Nigeria Limited, one of theevent sponsors at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere. http://www.weyab.com/2013/07/nigeria-sets-new-world-record-for.html

Finally I think they got this right...NO MORE IMMUNITY TO ANY BODY and LOCAL GOVERNMENT FINALLY GAIN THIER AUTOMNOMY . The House of Representatives has steered away from the Senate’s decisions on the constitution amendment by removing the immunity that bars presidents and governors from prosecution, and rejected the Senate’s plan for a single term of six years for the leaders. In its constitution amendment report tabled on Thursday, the House retained the current two terms of four years each for presidents and governors, and turned down a proposal for a post office pension plan for the Senate President and the Speaker of the House. House-of-Reps The pension plans were part of the Senate’s submissions in June, but remains unapproved as the Senate has yet to debate the clauses of the its constitution amendment. If the legislation had passed, current Senate President David Mark and House Speaker Aminu Tambuwal would be the first beneficiaries provided they are not impeached out of office. The House did not state whether it considered the proposal before rejecting it, or whether it never came up throughout the process that has lasted more than one year. But in far-reaching proposals that also remain subject to confirmation of the entire House, concurrence by the Senate and at least 24 state Houses of Assembly, the House constitution review committee said the immunity promotes impunity and should go. “In line with the results from the Peoples’ Public Sessions, the Committee also removed the immunity from prosecution from criminal offences for persons occupying the position of president, vice president, governor and deputy governor, and to stem impunity levels,” the report said. The House has also barred the president and governors from altering existing laws, and introduced a constitutional role for traditional rulers. Under the House plan, local government will also enjoy absolute autonomy from their often predatory state authorities as elections will henceforth be held as due, and the third tier will enjoy direct funding from the federal government. Elections to the local government councils will also be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission as the state electoral commissions will be abolished. The House, however, agreed with the Senate that the offices of the Attorney General, Minister of Justice, Accountant General and Auditor General, be separated. Both chambers have also rejected the creation of new states, saying none of the dozens of proposals sent in across the country met the statutory requirements. The proposals are to be considered on a later date, the House said. http://www.weyab.com/2013/07/reps-remove-immunity-clause-exposing.html

Egypt’s military reportedly is attempting a massive roundup of members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist movement that helped propel Morsy to power a year ago. Arrest warrants have been issued for 300 members of the Muslim Brotherhood, and an operation to arrest them is under way, according to the state-run Ahram newspaper website on Thursday, which cited an unnamed security source. Egyptian security forces also have arrested the Muslim Brotherhood’s political party leader, Saad el-Katatni, and its deputy, Rashad Al-Bayoumi, Egypt’s official MENA news agency reported Wednesday, citing an unnamed military source |

Two patients have been taken off their HIV drugs after bone-marrow transplants seemed to clear the virus from their bodies, doctors report. One of the patients has spent nearly four months without taking medication with no sign of the virus returning. The team at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in the US, caution that it is far too soon to talk about a cure as the virus could return at any point. The findings were presented at the International Aids Society Conference. It is difficult to get rid of an HIV infection because it hides inside human DNA, forming untouchable “reservoirs” in body. Anti-retroviral drugs keep the virus in check within the bloodstream – but when the drugs stop, the virus comes back. HIV gone? The two men, who have not been identified, had lived with HIV for about 30 years. They both developed a cancer, lymphoma, which required a bone-marrow transplant. Bone marrow is where new blood cells are made and it is thought to be a major reservoir for HIV. After the transplant, there was no detectable HIV in the blood for two years in one patient and four in the other The pair came off their anti-retroviral drugs earlier this year. One has gone 15 weeks, and the other seven, since stopping treatment, and no signs of the virus have been detected so far. Dr Timothy Henrich told the BBC the results were exciting. But he added: “We have not demonstrated cure, we’re going to need longer follow-up. “What we can say is if the virus does stay away for a year or even two years after we stopped the treatment, that the chances of the virus rebounding are going to be extremely low. “It’s much too early at this point to use the C-word [cure].” It is thought that the transplanted bone marrow was initially protected from infection by the course of anti-retrovirals. Meanwhile the transplant also attacked the remaining bone marrow, which was harbouring the virus. However Dr Henrich cautioned that the virus could be still be hiding inside brain tissue or the gastrointestinal track. “If [the] virus does return, it would suggest that these other sites are an important reservoir of infectious virus and new approaches to measuring the reservoir at relevant sites will be needed to guide the development of HIV curative strategies,” he said. Berlin patient Timothy Brown, also known as the “Berlin patient” is thought to be the first person cured of Aids. He had a bone marrow transplant from a rare donor who was resistant to HIV. The two US cases both received bone marrow from normal donors. There was also a report of an HIV cure in a baby born in Mississippi, US. She was treated with anti-retroviral drugs at birth so it is thought the virus was cleared from the body before reservoirs were established. Dr Michael Brady, the medical director of the Terrence Higgins Trust, said: “It is too early to know whether HIV has been eradicated from these men’s bodies or whether it might return. “However, the case suggests that what happened to Timothy Brown, the Berlin Patient was perhaps not a one-off. “A bone marrow transplant is a complex and expensive procedure, which comes with significant risks. “For most people with HIV, it would be more dangerous to undergo a transplant than to continue managing the virus with daily medication. “So while this is by no means a workable cure, it does give researchers another signpost in the direction of one.” The head of the Foundation for AIDS Research, Kevin Frost, said: “These findings clearly provide important new information that might well alter the current thinking about HIV and gene therapy. “While stem-cell transplantation is not a viable option for people with HIV on a broad scale because of its costs and complexity, these new cases could lead us to new approaches to treating, and ultimately even eradicating, HIV.” http://www.urhobovanguard.com/2013/07/03/bone-marrow-frees-men-of-hiv-drugs/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

Pictured above is a young man that had a deadly brush with a moving train over the weekend after he walked into its tracks along Agege motor road by Airport bus stop, Ikeja, Lagos. Reports say the yet-to-be identified young man apparently had covered his ears with ear phones as he walked into the tracks getting knocked down by the moving train. Passers-by thronged the scene and rescued the victim from the clutches of death, though his head was battered. A LASAMBUS emergency ambulance raced to the scene and took him to Ikeja General Hospital. We could not ascertain the state of his health as at press time.

Smoking cannabis really does make people less motivated, say scientists. Long-term use of the drug destroys dopamine, the feel-good chemical in the brain that inspires a spirit of get-up-and-go. Previous research has suggested taking marijuana can lead to individuals becoming withdrawn, lethargic and apathetic. Now a new study has shown levels of dopamine in a part of the brain called the striatum – found towards the side of the brain and involved in motivation – were lower in regular cannabis users. Lazy: Marijuana smokers are often stereotyped as being apathetic. Lazy: Marijuana smokers are often stereotyped as being apathetic. Now scientists have discovered that the drug affects production of the feel-good chemical dopamine in the area of the brain responsible for motivation Dr Michael Bloomfield, of Imperial College London, said: ‘Dopamine is involved in telling the brain when something exciting is about to happen – be it sex, drugs or rock ‘n roll. ‘Our findings explain why cannabis has a tendency to make people sit around doing nothing. ‘The results weren’t what we expected but tie in with previous research on addiction which has found substance abusers have altered dopamine systems. ‘Although we only looked at cannabis users who have had psychotic-like experiences while using the drug we think the findings would apply to cannabis users in general since we didn’t see a stronger effect in the subjects who have more psychotic-like symptoms. This needs to be tested though. Previous studies have shown that cannabis causes people to become withdrawn and lethargic Previous studies have shown that cannabis causes people to become withdrawn and lethargic ‘It could also explain the “amotivational syndrome” which has been described in cannabis users but whether such a syndrome exists is controversial.’ Some claim there is no such condition saying a person who fits this description could in fact be showing signs of depression or chronic intoxication. PET (positron emission tomography) scans on the brains of 38 people – 19 regular cannabis users and 19 non-users – found less dopamine in those who smoked more and those who began taking the drug at a younger age. The researchers said this could explain why some cannabis users seem to lack motivation to work or pursue their normal interests. The cannabis users in the study published in Biological Psychiatry had all experienced psychotic-like symptoms while smoking the drug such as strange sensations or having feelings of paranoia. The researchers expected their dopamine production might be higher since this has been linked with psychosis – but instead found the opposite. The cannabis users had their first experience with the drug between the ages of 12 and 18 and the researchers believe the drug could be the cause of the difference in dopamine levels. The lowest dopamine levels were seen in users who met diagnostic criteria for cannabis abuse or dependence – raising the possibility this measure could provide a marker of addiction severity. Previous research has shown cannabis users have a higher risk of mental illnesses that involve repeated episodes of psychosis such as schizophrenia. Dr Bloomfield said: ‘It’s been assumed cannabis increases the risk of schizophrenia by inducing the same effects on the dopamine system we see in schizophrenia but this hasn’t been studied in active cannabis users until now.’ Other studies have looked at dopamine release in former cannabis users and not seen differences with people who haven’t taken the drug – suggesting the effects seen in this study are likely to be reversible. Dr Bloomfield said: ‘Cannabis is an illegal drug and there is mounting evidence the idea of it being a harmless herb is not true. ‘When people stop taking cannabis it seems the brain can slowly go back to producing pretty normal levels of dopamine. ‘Cannabis has effects on the brain and it’s important people can make an informed decision.’ http://www.weyab.com/2013/07/smoking-marijuana-really-does-make-you.html

Until recently, terrorism was an alien word in theaverage Nigerian’s dictionary as it was regarded as a ‘Western thing’. Today, terrorism is not only alive, but it is actively breeding. Before we discuss why Nigeria’s terrorism profile should concern everyone, let’s define terrorism. Etymologically, the word terrorism derives originally from the Latin and French words: terrere and terrorisme, meaning “to frighten” and “state rule by terror” respectively. According to Bill Hoffman, one of the world’s foremost experts on the issue, terrorism is often times political in its aim, violent or threatened violence, designed to have psychologically reparations beyond the immediate target, conducted by an organization with an identifiable chain of command or conspiratorial cell structure, and perpetuated by a sub national or non-state entity. The United Nations Security Council report defines terrorism as any act intended to cause death or serious bodily harm to civilians or non-combatants with the purpose of intimidating a population or compelling a government or an international organization to do or abstain from doing any act. Note that there have been variousdisagreements on the true representation of theUN’s definition. Since the advent of numerous attack cases purposely carried out by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), in their quest to drive home their ‘grievances’ against the injustice melted on the Niger Delta region, terrorist groups like the Al-Qaeda linked Boko Haram, Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi Biladis Sudan (JAMBS), Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MOJAO) and more recently the yet-to-be-confirmed linked Lebanese Shite Movement group, Hezbollah havesprung up unleashing mayhem and destruction on our country. The major reason we should worry is because our people are dying. Everyday, the death toll increases. Men, women, children, innocent people are cut down violently by blood-sucking rebels void of consciences. Another reason why we need to be concerned forNigeria’s growing terrorism profile is the ‘salt upon injury’ approach taken by the United States in blacklisting Nigeria on their watch list of terrorist countries. The average Nigerian is being homogenized as a terrorist or a potential one. The already somewhat humiliating process doesn’t suffice, we are now automatically suspected because we are from a terrorist ridden nation. The Nigerian government has always been and is still an active player in championing anti-terrorism both nationally and within the African continent. The IBB administration movedto stem religious fanaticism by setting up the Karibi- Whyte tribunal under the Justice Donli Commission to try and sentence guilty suspects during the 1983 and 1987 terror incidents thatstarted in Kafanchan and spread to Zaria, Funtua, Malumfashi and Kastina. The different anti-terrorism bills sponsored by Senator Benjamin Obi, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and late President Umaru Musa Yar-Adua presented to the National Assembly between February 2005, 2006 and 2010 before Yar-Adua passed on, suffered setbacks due to lobbying and party politics, an inherent problem eating into the roots of our democratic system. Where there is no law, there is no sin and no one can be held accountable to his/ her actions. Scary. We need to mount pressure on our lawmakers to pass efficient, targeted anti-terrorism bills that will empower the pursuit, trial, and swift punishment of people who say no one can have peace. More importantly, we need to speak up. See evil and keep it to yourself? Infantile terrorism. We need to be concerned for the place we all call home.

What you don't know behind the scene ! A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Monday, declared the appointment by the president of all Service Chiefs of the Federation unconstitutional and illegal. Justice Adamu Bello held that the appointments were null and void and restrained the President from further appointing the chiefs of Air Staff, Army Staff, and Naval Staff without the approval of the Senate. The case, instituted in 2008 by Festus Keyamo, against the President, joined the Attorney General and the three service chiefs as respondents. Some poeple were asking , what is the problem of Mr. Keyamo, but is it true that Mr bello may be linked to boko haram that hav been disturbing the country for years now? Did you think that Mr president will listen to them this time ? Mr. Keyamo told PREMIUM TIMES that the ruling effectively nullifies the appointments of all the military chiefs. “They have been removed from office, that’s what it means. Even if they want to appeal, the judgment still stands,” Mr. Keyamo said in a telephone interview. Is this the right time to discuss this ? For me I believe Mr keyamo and mallam belo must somehow have an idea on the issue of boko haram, weyab.com stated. Azubuike Ihejirika, the Chief of Army Staff, was appointed in 2010; Alex Badeh, Chief of Air Staff, was appointed in 2012; and Joseph Ezeoba, Chief of Naval Staff, was also appointed in 2012. In October 2012, President Goodluck Jonathan reshuffled and retired the service chiefs with Mr. Ihejirika being the only officer to retain his post. Efforts to reach military spokespersons were not successful. The spokesperson of theNigerian military, ChrisOlukolade, said that he was busy and would “call back later.” will the masses allow this two to bring in another problem in the force at this critical time ? For me this two must have something to answer In terms of boko haram. |
THE transformation was beyond everyone’s imagination as Motoring journalists gathered at Weststar Associates office, representativesof Mercedes Benz in Nigeria to catch a glimpse of the all-new Mercedes Benz A-Classand test drive it too. The occasion was a special one for Mercedes in the country being the first time it would be launching four new exciting models at a time. Members of the public were also invited to test-drive the cars-Mercedes Benz A, B, C and E-Class. It was all fun as Weststar hosted the guests, the Mercedes Benz way. The elated Managing Director of Weststar Associates, Mr. Mirko Plath had earlier during a press briefing explained how Mercedes Benzhad transformed the A-Class to make it a classbenchmark. He asked the journalists to reservetheir questions until they see the new bride. But everyone was amazed when they saw the new A-Class. It was a masterpiece in every respect – design, comfort, power and safety-just name it. Mercedes Benz engineers craftsmanship reflected all over. The cockpit has been carefully crafted with unique features that gives the A-Class away as a car in the upper class. The quality materials used in the finishing were a clear testimony that Mercedes wanted to make the A-Class a benchmark in its segment. No one expected the level of transformation on the car. It was simply cute. …The interior But if the design of the all new A-Class was stunning, one would be completely lost at the performance of this entry level Mercedes Benz car. It is fast and handles like the biggerMercedes Benz. It is spacious with array of comfort amenities and latest high- tech equipment like never before in its class as revealed during a test drive along the Lekki Expressway. The test-drive left all wondering weather the car should still retain the model name – A-Class. It is an entirely new car with new shape, high-end luxury and unimaginable excellent road-handling. Available in Nigeria with a 4-cylinder petrol engine as the A 180 BlueEFFICIENCY with 1595CC and 90 KW (122 horsepower) plus a maximum torque of 200Nm between 1250 and 4000 rpm, the new A-Class is one of the most fuel efficient cars in its class. Though there are other engine variants available in theA-Class lineup but not approved for Nigerian market.Mercedes Benz says the new A-Class isa true endurance athlete. The economical consumption from 3.3 litres over 100 kilometres takes you further than you think.” Mated to this engine is a 7-speed dual clutch transmission 7G-DCT which is standard. With seven forward gears and one reverse gear thedual clutch transmission combines comfort, sportiness and economy. The new A-Class excellent roadhandling comes from its power-train, chassis and suspension. McPherson strut front axle and a completely redesigned four-link rear axle ensure driving stability and ride comfort.
