PoliticsTurai Yar'adua For President by ChapelleS(op): 7:44pm On Dec 01, 2009
This is contained in a chapter of a book am writing.

I have some reasons for this assertion.I have even before the current health crisis of the president adviced him to resign in a post on my blog on the 9th of Nov.I believe that if the presidents heeds that warning and resigns,Turai is the next best option for Nigeria. The unity of this country depends on the rotation of presidency.Although it not enshrined in the constitution, certain political cultures exist in nations despite the fact that it not written down.To buttress that,I will want anyone to imagine the country that informs us that they believe in freedom and are bent on spreading it to all parts of the globe-America voting for a muslim president.their constitution gives full liberty and rights to everyone, but it will be imaginary to think of a full confessed muslim to lead that country in this century.

Nigeria's rotational presidency is a similiar case. The United States dared to elect a blackman because they have come of age. They have attained the highest level of development and as such anyone could aspire to lead because the institutions of that nation are very strong. Now as I said earlier, the unity of this country depends on how well the tripods of Nigeria have access to power.Bet me in 2015,if we are still in democracy, power is not conceded to east, they will be forced to reconsider their membership of the Nigerian nation.

Going by recents events,Yar'adua may not go for second tenure,if any northener gets to power,it will be difficult to get the person out by 2015 because he will seek a second tenure. Therefore it will be in the best interest of the nation to chose a woman in the person of Turai who has a some knowledge of governance as wife of Yar'adua and first lady.It will be easier to get her to relinquish power because she will see her tenure as a continuation of her husband's

Let's us also give chance to the women in this coutry, the men have failed us for 50 years.

Candidate Yar’Adua and his cross

By Azubuike Ishiekwene, Published: Tuesday, 1 Dec 2009

At the height of the spat between the House of Representatives and the Senate last week over which venue President Umaru Yar’Adua should present the 2010 budget to a joint sitting of the National Assembly, I received a text message with a stunning point of view. The sender said he had heard that the President was ill and that the budget face-off was stage-managed by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to save him from the ordeal of presenting the bill himself.

I laughed off the SMS. Sure, you cannot put any mischief past the PDP, but to play politics with the President’s health seemed to me beyond the pale. In retrospect, I think I was mistaken. I should have known that in sickness or in health, politics is the first and last order of survival; it’s a do-or-die affair. If the President’s health was once thought to be off-limits, the rules now appear to be changing.

For example, the public announce-ment by the President’s doctor on Thursday that Yar’Adua was suffering from inflammation of the heart was a remarkable act of courage and openness. It was a departure from the trademark half-truths, outright lies and incompetent spin about the state of health of the President in the last 18 months or so. Although the doctor’s statement did not suggest any link between the President’s long-standing health problems and the present crisis, this first major attempt to come clean was also a political adventure.

Since Yar’Adua came to office in May 2007, he has travelled abroad at least four times – once to Germany, and thrice to Saudi Arabia – in connection with his health. Rumours about his actual ailment have ranged from the known (kidney disease); to the probable (Chaug Strauss Syndrome); to the ridiculous (mental problems). In all of this, the President and his government had maintained a stony silence, warning the opposition and the press not to “play politics” with the President’s health.

It appears that the days of denial are over. Not only was the announcement of the President’s illness an important political act, it was also designed to take the wind off the opposition’s sail and to enlist the public’s goodwill and sympathy. That is just as well. But the government must be prepared for tougher questions about how the country is run while the President is indisposed and his fitness to continue in office afterwards. In short, the politics of futile denial will inevitably be followed by the politics of calculated disclosure and its aftermath.

It was ridiculous and unnecessary for the government to say on the CNN that the President was not about to share any of his executive powers with Vice President Goodluck Jonathan. By law, he might be a figurehead, but by convention, a vice president does not require any special arrangement to act for the President in a work-a-day life.

The statement on the CNN may have reinforced the vice president’s figurehead image. But the government’s attempt to replace that image with the impression that a sick president is in charge is woefully unconvincing. In the end, the winner is a government on auto-pilot, a festering of cults, each group doing its own thing while the country drifts.

For how long? It’s not a question that the government – or the ruling party – wants to contemplate. The question will be treated as taboo because the inner circle would like us to believe that to do otherwise will (a) undermine confidence in the government and (b) post a premature obituary when the government still has a fighting chance. This argument is as eloquent as it is self-serving. Those who are advancing it are doing so not necessarily for the sick, for flag or for country, but because they fear that their own political end may also be near.

This was the case many years ago when aides of former US President Grover Cleveland told Americans that he was extracting a bad tooth on a yacht, instead of telling them that he had gone for an operation to remove a cancerous lesion from his left upper jaw. A more dramatic example was the case of the 32nd US President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He wanted an unprecedented third term, but first, he and his aides had to deal with the politics of his failing health. While his personal physician diagnosed him with “flu,” a second opinion by a cardiologist revealed that FDR was suffering from hypertension, heart disease, left ventricular cardiac failure, and bronchitis.

This second opinion was, naturally, swept under the carpet and FDR’s doctor later gave him a clean bill of health. He was re-elected for a third term in 1944, but died working at his desk shortly afterwards.

In spite of his health challenges, Yar’Adua has carried himself with remarkable calmness and dignity. But what he needs now are not aides looking for enemies in the vice president’s office, in the opposition and virtually everywhere but in themselves. The President needs help from his deputy to run the country normally; and our kind thoughts and prayers to get well quickly.

Most of all, after years of running battles with his health – with hardly enough energy to lift a drifting country or even time to enjoy the pleasures of his office – he needs to take back his life once again. He must begin to pack his suitcases, shun all pressure to run for office for a second term, and come to terms with the fact that with or without him, the country will go on. Politics need not be a do-or-die affair. I wish him well.

Good news from Venezuela
Matters Arising Nov 28, 2009

By Kunle Oyatomi
Several normal Nigerians would have been totally crestfallen when they read on Tuesday the story of how the Venezuelan Ambassador to this country, at a moment of truth, brushed aside protocol to pass a vital message to Nigeria about how the country’s failures in multiple dimensions is troubling the developing world.

Even the developed world is worried about Nigeria’s failure to manage its affairs in spite of the numerous talents and internationally recognised experts which this country can boast of.

However, it is the Venezuelan Ambassador, Enerique Fernando Arrundell who has put Nigeria’s tragedy in unprecedented focus when he told our Chief Brand’s Manager, the Minister of Information, Prof Dora Akunyili, that Nigeria is not in control of its affairs.

The minister, as it were, was “cap-in-hand” asking Venezuela to come and take advantage of Nigeria’s deregulation policy to invest in building refineries in Nigeria so our people can have “less costly” access to fuel. I believe that disgust and anger at that request made the Ambassador drop his diplomatic garb to bring some home truth to Nigeria like no other foreign government has done in recent times. And the message was stark.

“In Venezuela”, the Ambassador was reported to have told Akunyili, “since 1999, we have never had a raise in fuel price…. “Remember?, the current President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, came to power in 1998, while our democratic government was elected in 1999.

In Nigeria we have had about four increases in fuel prices since then and as at this moment, the devastating effect on our people is unimaginable. You may not get the enormity of the evil inherent in this exercise until you read the next statement of the Ambassador. He said, “We only pay $1.02 to fill the tank. What I pay for with N12,000 here (Nigeria), in Venezuela I’ll pay N400.”

For a country that is about three steps below in world ranking as an oil producing country, to be able to produce and provide its citizens with fuel three time cheaper than Nigeria, tells not just a sad story about our failure as a country and people, but also about the hopeless quality of leadership at the helm of affairs. The Ambassador was so perplexed about failure in governance that he continued;

“How come Nigeria that has more technical manpower than Venezuela, with 150 million people, and very intellectual people all around, not been able to get it right?”

Simple: Wickedness in high places!!

Nigeria has people who can rule this country excellently and efficiently, but they have been programmed never to have access to governance so that the vampires would be in full charge bleeding, the nation and impoverishing its citizens.

The statement of the Ambassador was so loaded, he made it all so clear to Akunyili that the model of development which the country is adopting would lead us nowhere. Until our people learn from Venezuela’s experience, we may not get it right.

He made a beautiful case about how the current president of Venezuela decided to take control of the country’s resources, and in the process was able, within the same period as Nigeria’s latest democratic experiment, to build 17 Universities, and make education free at all levels to its citizens. Perhaps, sensing the minister’s incredulity, the Ambassador further stated that;

“We have no illiterate people,” (nearly half of Nigeria’s 150 million people are illiterates!!) “We have over 17 new Universities totally free. I graduated from the university without paying one cent and take three meals every day, because we have the resources.

We want the resources of the Nigerian people for the Nigerians. It is enough! It is enough, minister!” That man must have spoken from the depth of his soul, and the deepest of frustration at watching a bunch of people messing around with the lives of 150 million citizens of a country that has no business being as wretchedly poor as majority of Nigerians have become, in spite of its wealth.

Talking about the model of development (apparently sold to Nigerian ruling elite, and the hyper selfish business and political class by the IMF/World Bank) the Venezuelan Ambassador said; “If you don’t control the (oil) industry, your development will be in the hands of foreigners. You have to have your own country. The oil is your country. The question is, if you are not handling your resources, how are you going to handle the country?”

For the government sold to a bogus brand of capitalism, the sense in privatisation and deregulation is that it gives the citizen greater opportunity to develop. The Nigerian experience however is a complete nuisance as the direct opposite is what is happening ever since the deregulation mania set in from 1999.

The Venezuelan experience contrasts the Nigerian ugly reality: Education has completely collapsed over the same period.

We have deteriorated so badly that private schools which provide something close to standard education is affordable only to less than a fifth of number of children seeking good education in the country. Even the standard of living in Nigeria is now less than a dollar a day, while that of Venezuela is $2 per day and the highest in the whole of Latin America.

Mrs Minister of Information, what the Ambassador is telling you and your government is that there is no way a developing (or is it rather an under-developed country like Nigeria) can make progress if it is not efficiently managed and CONTROLLED by the country’s government. And the contrasted situation between Nigeria and Venezuela proves that conclusively.

Ten, eleven years into democratic rule by two countries in similar circumstance but operating different models of development economics, and the results so starkly different: Venezuela leaping ahead in the content of life index, while Nigeria is a pathetic failure in contrast; not because we cannot get it right, but because we have deliberately handed the country over to predators who are not only intellectually deficient, but also humanly too selfish to seek the public good.

President Barak Obama told us when the US President visited Ghana the other day, that we can engineer change only from within, but we did not understand.

Now the Venezuelan Abassador has skipped all protocol to tell a similar truth that we should look within to take charge of our lives and economy. It is sad, but it would appear that the ruling elite would prefer a situation where foreigners take over our resources leaving us the poorer, all in the privatization and deregulation.

Whether they like to hear it or not, the truth is, Nigerians are suffering so much, patience is running out. Something could snap. It is only natural.

Politics6,000mw Not Realisable-VANGUARD by ChapelleS(op): 4:20pm On Nov 27, 2009
By Festus Ahon
WARRI — NIGERIANS have been told to brace up for the unexpected as the much orchestrated generation of 6,000MW of electricity by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) at the end of the year is no longer realisable.

This is the result of investigations conducted by a non-governmental organi-sation and pro-PHCN group, the Initiative for Better Power Supply (IBPS).

According to the National Co-ordinator of IBPS, Mr. Don Emmanuel Onose, “after a meeting with field workers at Abuja recently, it was clear to us that the dream of generating the so-called 6,000MW of electricity by the end of December 2009 is not feasible from both completed and on-going projects throughout the country.”

Onose, however, admoni-shed Nigerians not to blame PHCN and the energy Minister for the failure to realise the dream, saying that past governments paid too much lip-service to the issue of power generation that allowed the problem linger for too long.

The goup appealed to Nigerians to keep an eagle eye on all PHCN installations against vandalism by crooks, Onose charged all to applaud the efforts of President Umaru Yar’ Adua and the Energy and Power Minister, Dr. Babalola, to give Nigerians regular and steady power supply within their means.

PoliticsAll Nigerians Are Cowards by ChapelleS(op): 2:57pm On Nov 27, 2009
A country where all the citizens are experts in complaining is nothing but land inhibited by cowards who die many times before their death according to Shakespeare. This is a nation where those who are killing us are courted and respected.Imagine the number of people who were visiting Bode George,a man who misappropriated about more than $500m of government funds that can guarantee free university education to all youths in Nigeria.Despite the enormous wealth inherent, the government cannot guarantee steady power, good roads, functional health care and education and affordable housing. The citizens are disfranchised because the elections are rigged. What I see are citizens who can only spit fire but cannot act.If you query them, they rant that they are protecting the unity of a country that is worse than Somalia that is war-torn.All they do is to admire Ghana. They refuse to recognize that all good governments and economies on planet earth were heralded by a revolution of a sought. We know what took place in our neighboring country Ghana before they got to this stage. The velvet revolution in Poland solved the problems of that country.Yugoslavia had to split into seven country as at today before they started moving forward. We are waiting for the hand of God to change things for us.Instead of God answering us He rather listen to serious countries who want to move forward.Instead of Nigerians calling on a sick president to resign, the cowards in Nigeria want him even if he is coma.It amuses me to see all these groups who come to Nairaland to form Internet "revolutionary fronts".We have over 150million people in this country. If 20 million can take to the streets of every state capital and Abuja in this country as is done in many Asia countries there will be serious change.Instead of taking to the streets to demand the implementation of the UWAIS report so as to wrestle the power to appoint the INEC chairman from president,we are yet relaxed and waiting for another electoral fiasco. What are Nigerians? They are all cowards in capital letters.
PoliticsThe Visa Nightmare: Africa Should Retaliate by ChapelleS(op): 2:28pm On Nov 27, 2009
Wilfred Mulliro is Kenyan columnist. Obtained B.A. in English Literature from Kenyata University and currently also finalizing his MA in International Studies from Nairobi University. His articles which focus on Culture and Politics appear in Kenyan leading Newspapers.

Foreign embassies in Africa and other developing countries have found an easy way of making money – because they know no matter how many times they reject applications, people will still re-apply. The current visa system is a fraud and something has to be done about the whole visa application process.

Applying for a UK or USA visa in Africa is in-deed frustrating, time consuming, humiliating and expensive. In Kenya and Ghana for instance, one is supposed to provide so much confidential information such as invitation letters, bank statements, proof of employment, proof of relationship, mortgage payment, medical, marriage certificates etc. It is much complicated for non-Christians especially Muslims of Arab and Somali origin. They are ill-treated, humiliated and asked for diverse confidential information, in fact the only thing they are not asked to submit is blood and urine samples!

We are so dependent on Europe and America that we fear retaliating through our embassies abroad for fear of loosing donor support and tourism money. To me this is part of mischief of the west. I think those visiting developing countries should undergo the same regimes of visa application. Africans have found it expensive to finance and sustain foreign missions while foreign embassies in our continent display much opulence derived mainly from the fraudulent devices they have set in Africa. They use Africa’s money to finance their embassies in developing countries.

Governments in developing countries should not remain unconcerned when their citizens are fleeced by foreigners right under the noses of their governments in their capital cities.

Our governments should use all available means of expressing discontent and disaffection with this kind of western visa fraud. They institute the same visa regime for Europeans, Americans and related countries. The Libya government, for instance, in payback to the humiliation of its citizens at foreign embassies decided that in the same measure, foreigners residing in Libya could no longer renew their papers in Libya. They equally had to return to their own countries to renew their stay in Libya. If all African embassies did the same for people applying for visas, the outrage done would lead to a change in attitude towards developing countries. Why not use the African Union (AU) and even UN forums to highlight such an issue?

It is laughable that some African countries like South Africa which were baby-sat by Africans are quickly assuming these frustrating and humiliating UK, America – like visa policies. Does it ever cross the minds of these people that in the past Africans and others were forced over into their countries as slaves? Now that the slaves built and developed the foreign countries, today when they want to visit these countries they are ill treated and criminalized. It is ironical that we talk of the world becoming a global village, yet people from Developing countries are not free to travel around this village while they can!

I accept the logic, for purposes of territorial security and order; states can humanely impose screening and restrictions as is the case of visas. However, if embassies are really genuine in their desire to process visa applications then it should not be made a process whose end is money. I think it is fraud to take somebody’s money for a service you refuse to give. Imagine the number of people who troop to embassies every day? Most applications are however, rejected but the fee is not refunded.

I propose that people should only pay once their visa opportunities are approved.

And also courtesy and goodwill should be displayed. The body search, demand for numerous confidential information, disgraceful treatment and criminalization of human beings due to religion, race or color should not be part of visa application screening. After all, we are all members of this world, God’s equal creations; genuinely pursuing personal happiness abound in the world.

At about 3pm on Friday, November 20th, after he returned from the Abuja Central Mosque where he performed the Juma’at prayers, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua complained of left sided severe chest pain. Preliminary medical examinations suggested ACUTE PERICARDITIS, (an inflammatory condition of the coverings of the heart).

It was then decided that he should undertake confirmatory checks at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where he had his last medical check-up in August.

The medical review and tests undertaken at the hospital have confirmed the initial diagnosis that the President is indeed suffering from ACUTE PERICARDITIS.

He is now receiving treatment for the ailment and is responding remarkably well.

Diagnosed of Acute Pericarditis, Says Personal Physician

By Daniel Idonor

ABUJA—PRESIDENT Umaru Yar’Adua who is recuperating in a hospital bed in Jedah, Saudi Arebia has expressed sadness and disappointment over the widespread rumour of his death which rocked the nation since Wednesday; just as his Personal Physician, Dr. Salisu Banye, FWACP, has confirmed that the President is suffering from “Acute Pericarditis”, (an inflammatory condition of the coverings of the heart).

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Olusegun Adeniyi, who read a statement titled: “President Yar’Adua’s Health Condition” which was sent from Jedah by the President’s Personal Physician, disclosed that the President has received the news of the rumour of his death and he felt very bad about it.Nigerians were on Wednesday awakened by the rumour that the President who left for King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the previous day had died.

But fielding questions from reporters, Mr Adeniyi said the President is alive and responding to treatment for the ailment, assuring that he will keep Nigerians abreast of the President’s health condition on regularly bases.

Narrating how the President took ill, as contained in the statement sent from Jedah, the President’s Personal Physician, Dr Banye said that “at about 3:00pm of Friday, November 20th, after he returned from the Abuja Central Mosque where he performed the Juma’at prayers, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua complained of left sided severe chest pain. Preliminary medical examinations suggested ACUTE PERICARDITIS, (an inflammatory condition of the coverings of the heart)”.

According to him, “it was then decided that he should undertake confirmatory checks at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where he had his last medical check-up in August”.

He disclosed that “the medical review and tests undertaken at the hospital have confirmed the initial diagnosis that the President is indeed suffering from ACUTE PERICARDITIS”.

The Presidential Physician however assured that the President “is now receiving treatment for the ailment and is responding remarkably well”.

Fielding questions from State House Correspondents on the feeling of the President over the rumour, the Presidential Spokesman said “the President is a human being, naturally he will feel bad. This is not the first time, the President was aware of the rumor. He felt bad about it as any normal human being would”; adding that there is nothing anybody can do about rumour; “what can we do, we can’t legislate against rumor”.

Reacting to reports that President would perform the Hajj, he said “no, it is definitely not true; even before the President travelled he knew that he was not going to perform the Hajj”; stressing that “even when I did the first draft of the statement, I stated that the President will do medicals and undergo Hajj, but he said no, I am not going to do Hajj. So there is no way he is going to do Hajj.

Asked to confirm if the President decided to travel at night because he could not walk, he said “actually what happened was that the President was supposed to leave earlier in the day but because of the holidays in Saudi Arabia they (those who travelled with him) couldn’t procure his visa on time”.

On the possible date of return by the President, the Presidential aide said “once I know I will tell; I will give you an update”

Investigations by Vanguard reveals that Acute Pericarditis is inflammation of the membrane (the pericardium) surrounding the heart that begins suddenly and is painful. Acute pericarditis usually results from an infection or other conditions that irritate the pericardium including disease, drugs, invasive cardiothoracic procedures, and chest trauma.

Acute pericarditis usually lasts less than six weeks. The most common symptom is a sharp stabbing chest pain on the left side of the chest, that tends to be worse when lying down, coughing, or when breathing deeply.

Acute pericarditis is the most common condition affecting the pericardium. Testing for acute pericarditis includes ECG, EKG, blood tests, CT scan, chest x-ray, echocardiogram, or an MRI.

Acute pericarditis is more common in men than women. About one in five people with acute pericarditis has a recurrence within months of the original episode.

Meanwhile, Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, will today perform the receipt of the tradition of Sallah Homage, where Muslims usually pay visit to the President.

Below is the Full Text of the Statement:

ABUJA—PRESIDENT Umaru Yar’Adua who is recuperating in a hospital bed in Jedah, Saudi Arebia has expressed sadness and disappointment over the widespread rumour of his death which rocked the nation since Wednesday; just as his Personal Physician, Dr. Salisu Banye, FWACP, has confirmed that the President is suffering from “Acute Pericarditis”, (an inflammatory condition of the coverings of the heart).

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Olusegun Adeniyi, who read a statement titled: “President Yar’Adua’s Health Condition” which was sent from Jedah by the President’s Personal Physician, disclosed that the President has received the news of the rumour of his death and he felt very bad about it.
Nigerians were on Wednesday awakened by the rumour that the President who left for King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the previous day had died.

You make me laugh? You see how you are lamenting, the health of this single individual affects us all. What we require is a good life for all Nigerians. We will not because the last administration did nothing,we now expect the present one to toe the same line. What we need is an agent of change that will ensure that you have stable power, sound and quality education and all good things life offers. So we expect Yar'Adua to do these things even in he is coma.

What is 7-point agenda, when Sanusi like all other naive and unheard Nigerians before he joined the Nigeria's "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" advised that the 7-point should be trimmed down to like 2 or 3 say education, power and agriculture so that when we achieve those we can build on them. Those were close to exactly what he said,it spark a row between him and the presidency. What I have listed above are part of the 7-point agenda. If he can achieve these and no other,I will surely cast my vote for Yar'Adua even he is in coma, provided my vote will count.I tell you even Yar'Adua can deliver 10,000mw to Nigeria before Dec 2010 and resolve the Niger Delta problem,he will become legendary in Nigeria. The 7-point agenda is not a doctrine. We should begin to accept that we are wrong and Yar'Adua cannot prove to be more intelligent than 150million people. If he is let him prove it by changing the political and economic landscape of Nigeria for the better.
