Many who know Nkiru Sylvanus regard her as one of the best things that has ever happened to the movie industry. In this exclusive interview with ANTHONY ADA ABRAHAM , the director general, Imo State Film Academy speaks on her relationship with the Imo State governor and other issues. What have you been up to lately especially since the premiere of your much acclaimed film, The Voice? I’ve been busy with a couple of other movie projects since then. Of course, you know that entertainment is my first love. So it’s always dear to my heart; you can never let go of your first love. I’m working seriously, so you are going to hear from me soonest. I’ve got a couple of projects lined up for the year, but as you know, it’s the election season and there is a kind of lull. But trust me, as soon as we get over the election fever, I’ll swing into action. You were the Special Adviser (AS) Lagos Affairs, to the government of Imo State, SA on public affairs and now the Director General, Imo Film Academy, what do you think are the chances of the governor in the coming election? The chances of His Excellency Anayo Owelle Rochas Okorocha are non- negotiable. In fact, there’s no other candidate as far as Imo people are concerned. This is a man that has come to be adored by the people of Imo state. He has achieved way more than any governor that has led Imo state in the past. His works speak for him and the people of Imo know that Rochas Okorocha is a man that represents progress. Imo state has moved forward under him, the state has developed in all ramifications. From health to education, infrastructure to empowerment and what have you! So, Imo people definitely want the governor back because they don’t want to go backward. Rochas Okorocha within a short period has taken Imo people miles ahead. They are now proud of their state. In most of your interviews, you’ve always expressed passionate views about the governor. It was even rumoured that you were dating him. What can you say? Rumours are what they are, baseless rumours! The governor is my boss, but it will be unfair to see something good and not mention it. I speak passionately about him all the time, because of his good works, his belief and his passion for positive change. This is a man whom the people of Imo generally love for his good works. Since Okorocha became governor, the number of dualised road networks has increased, creation of new access roads are uncountable, while old dilapidated roads have been repaired and rural roads are uncountable. Positive impacts have also been made in the rehabilitation of public utilities, health, agriculture, youth empowerment, infrastructure improvements, etc. I can list his achievements from now till tomorrow and it won’t end. But where do you think these negative rumours are coming from? They are all lies. Propaganda fueled by those who are enemies of the state. They’ve realised that Okorocha’s achievements cannot be faulted and so resorted to propaganda by trying to massively misinform the people about his person. Another disappointing aspect is how people are sacrificing good governance and credibility for religious bias. Even some men who are religious leaders are now pitching their tents with different politicians because of selfish gains and have joined in fuelling political propaganda across the country. We face the same issue here in Imo State. Where is the love of God in all of this? It’s disappointing that discrimination has entered and taken root in Christendom. But can we really separate religion from politics? It’s not about separating religion from politics now. The problem is that churches are now involving themselves in partisan politics; one would begin to wonder how it got this bad. I know churches as a place where we live it all for God but what went wrong? Nigeria is a religious country and there is no way you can insist on a particular religion only being in power. I hear some pastors say “we can’t vote for a Muslim; we must vote a Christian,” my question is, when will that end? How do they intend to achieve that always? Or is it just for now? APC has a Muslim- Christian ticket, PDP has Christian- Muslim candidates, so what’s the confusion here? And after PDP’s four years more, that is if they get it, under their arrangement, power goes back to the north, what next? I think we should pray more for the unity of this country. Religious war is such that never ends and we do not want to go there. We shouldn’t allow these power hungry politicians destroy the church and this country. My advice to Nigerians is to look before you leap, think before you act or talk. While Christ tarries, let us try to love our neighbours as we love ourselves! That’s the word of God and love is the greatest of all. What’s your opinion about the shift in dates of the 2015 election? For me, it was a huge disappointment because by now, the nation would have left the corridor of uncertainty to the path of moving forward. The postponement is a big setback for the nation and democracy but anything for the peace and progress of Nigeria is okay! So we patiently await the holding of elections on the new dates. President Goodluck Jonathan has reiterated his administration’s commitment to the provision of stable electricity in the country. Speaking at the inauguration of Unit 4 and Unit 6 of the Egbin thermal plant in Lagos, Saturday, Mr. Jonathan said he would not rest until Nigerians begin to enjoy steady power supply. “For government, there is no going back until we surely stabilise power in the country,” Mr. Jonathan said. “The Egbin power plant and the result shown today demonstrate without doubt that we have made a strong foundation upon which we are building a sound and sustainable electricity industry. “Let me restate that we are committed to irreversibly reposition the Nigerian power sector as a pivot for the attainment of our nation’s development targets.” In January, the Egbin Power Plc announced the completion of its rehabilitation of a Steam Turbine generator, raising its capacity by 220MW (megawatts) and bringing the plant back to its installed capacity of 1,320MW. The generator, which was commissioned in November 1987, had been grounded for over eight years after suffering a boiler explosion in 2006. Though the company had stated in January that the rehabilitated turbine would bring about an increased power supply to Lagos and its environs, the areas have continued to witness poor power supply. On Saturday, Mr. Jonathan restated that the restoration of the plant would be beneficial to the Lagos industrial layout and its environs, leading to job creation. The president further noted that the rehabilitation would extend the life span of the power plant by 20 years, adding that the power sector privatization had yielded more dividends to the country. He also said that his administration is exploring various options to diversify energy source in order to remain the largest economy in the continent. In his remarks, Chinedu Nebo, the Minister of Power, said that the company’s new investor had funnelled over N50 billion to rehabilitate the plant. Mr. Nebo said while other operators in the sector had failed to hire or employ any engineer over the past 16 years, Egbin plant had hired over 100 engineers in training. According to him, work in the other power generation companies has boosted the nation’s power generation capacity, noting that Ughelli had increased to 600MW, Shiroro 600MW, and Kainji 230MW. The minister also said that a minimum of 5,000MW would be added to the grid at the completion of the coal turbines across the country. Four weeks to the March 28 presidential election, indications emerged that there is growing uncertainty among some members of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on whose platform President Goodluck Jonathan is contesting the election, over his candidacy. The reception the campaign team of the PDP has so far gotten from a sizeable number of Nigerians since the commencement of the presidential campaigns for the 2015 general elections is said to be responsible for the growing uncertainty in the president’s kitchen cabinet. This is particularly with members of the BoT from the northern part of the country, who say they are experiencing unimaginable difficulty in campaigning for the president in their home states. A ranking member of the PDP (BoT) from the northern part of the country who confided in LEADERSHIP Sunday, said the reactions of people, especially in the north to the second term aspiration of Jonathan had created serious tension among top members of the PDP who according to him, are at a loss how to market him or tackle the situation. Reacting to the report, national publicity secretary and national secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh and Prof. Wale Oladipo, in separate telephone interviews dismissed the existence of such a situation, saying the party’s presidential candidate enjoys nationwide acceptability and would be elected for a second term in office. While noting that Jonathan enjoys support in the North, Metuh insisted that it was not true that there was a problem campaigning for the president there, emphasising that he would get more votes in the North. “We don’t have any such problem, director of the campaign is from the North, deputy director is from the North and we have a lot more campaign directors from there also. We also have our governors who have consistently campaigned for the president. As a matter of fact, I can tell you that the bulk of supporters are in the North and we will have a lot more votes from the North,” he added. Oladipo on his part described the insinuation as most untrue, adding that it was figment of the imagination of those who say the situation exists. He said, “It’s a figment of imagination of the proponents of such tale. It is most untrue. We all, irrespective of zone or state of origin are most proud of our humble, cosmopolitan, focused, accessible and well educated president and presidential candidate and his loyal vice. By the grace of God and with Dr Jonathan’s nation-wide acceptability, we are set to beat our perennial customer…Pa Buhari once again.” Despite the insistence of national officers of the party that Jonathan is the candidate to beat in the election, the BoT source told LEADERSHIP Sunday that even though the issue has been discussed among a few of them from the North, based on the reactions they have been getting from their people, it had not been tabled as an official agenda before the president in all their meetings with him or even among top members of the PDP. In addition, he said that the situation has not also been openly discussed among the kitchen cabinet members because of its sensitivity and the possible reaction of the president to it or that of his die-hard backers. “Let me tell you that the PDP is starring at a situation it never thought it would encounter. We never thought we will get to a stage where our own supporters will turn their backs on us. We now have a situation where we don’t know what to do with the candidature of the president who seems to have lost a lot of support from the North and South West. It is even disheartening that he has lost some valuable votes within his south-south and south east region – something unheard of in the 2011 general elections,” the BoT source said. He added that since it is constitutionally impossible to even attempt changing the pair of the president and his vice, they have resorted to exploring other avenues of ensuring that the president wins. However, he said the keen interest shown by the outside world to the postponed elections means that they have to be very careful on how they go about ensuring victory for Jonathan. The BOT member also said most of the northern chieftains of the party were not really in control of their states – contrary to what they had been telling the president. He further lamented that cabinet ministers from the region were also not in control of their states. “Look at what happened in Kaduna when the president went to campaign. Those people in Kaduna told him they are in control only for the president to go and be almost embarrassed by the kind of crowd that came to the Ahmadu Bello Stadium,” he said. Meanwhile, in Katsina state, despite having firm control of the state machinery at their disposal, the state chapter of the ruling PDP is having difficulty selling the Jonathan candidacy, according to further findings. Our correspondent reports that in most of the PDP campaign outings in the state, little or no mention is made of the party’s presidential candidate. But the public relations officer of the party in the state, Alhaji Salisu Sukuntuni, refuted concerns that the party was having difficulty campaigning for its presidential candidate. However, our correspondent reports that when reference is made to the party’s presidential candidate, the response from the crowd is often a resounding “ba mu yi” a statement in Hausa language which when literarily translated means “we are not part of it”. Most of the PDP members have hinted that they will vote for the party at other elections but won’t cast their votes for the party’s presidential candidate in the forthcoming presidential poll. It is observed that some of the PDP candidates openly campaign for the election of presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari. Views are being expressed that unless serious fence mending actions are taken, the presidential candidate of the ruling PDP may record very low number of votes at the 28th March presidential poll. But Sukuntuni said, “it is a lie to say we are having difficulty as we have been consistent in seeking support for all our candidates including the president. We are very confident of winning majority of votes for President Jonathan just as we are certain of victory for all the PDP candidates.” It will however be recalled the angry youths stoned dignitaries with stones and slippers during Jonathan’s campaign rally in Bauchi. They also destroyed canopies and campaign materials during the campaign. In the same vein, the president’s convoy was stoned by some aggrieved youths in Jalingo, Taraba State, during his presidential campaign in the state. His convoy had earlier been stoned in Katsina when he went to seek votes for his re-election bid. It was reported that the windscreens and windows of some of the vehicles on the convoy were destroyed before security operatives used tear gas and horsewhips to disperse the youths.
