Politics / Obasanjo Has Committed Political Suicide - Fayose by Charlesdonald(m): 8:37pm On Feb 11, 2015
On Wednesday Ayodele Fayose, the Ekiti State
Governor advised Nigerians not to fall for the
antics of former President Olusegun Obasanjo
for allegedly endorsing the presidential
candidature of Major Gen Muhammadu Buhari
for the 2015 voting, ThisDay informs.
Fayose called Obasanjo’s declaration of support for
Buhari a political somersault and a suicidal mission.
The governor in a statement asked Nigerians to
ignore Obasanjo because of his antecedent as a
man who has penchant for deceiving people for his
own political gains.
It will be recalled that Obasanjo at a book launch in
Nairobi, Kenya on Tuesday declared support for
Buhari, saying he has capacity to fight corruption
that is killing the system.
According to him: “Leaving President Jonathan and
vote for Buhari is like to abandon the road and enter
the bush. God forbid we enter the forest which we
may not come out for years. How can you follow
somebody who because of old age is senile, but
being propelled by his followers to fly the plane at
all cost. Won’t that plane crash?”

Science/Technology / Kpakpando Akaeze, World Science Champion From Nigeria (Photo) by Charlesdonald(m): 9:04pm On Feb 08, 2015
Kpakpando Akaeze, a 15 year-old high school
student from Lagos, Nigeria. You may have heard of
her when news spread around the world about a
group of girls from Nigeria who designed a urine
powered generator. Kpakpando’s hobbies include
traveling and conducting experiments. In January
2015, she was selected to speak about education and
innovation at the World Economic Forum in Davos,
where she told world leaders that they need to step
up their game when it comes to investment in
education. He was asked a few questions and this is
how he replied:

1. You and your friends made global headlines
recently with your work on the using waste to create
energy. What are some of the most important things
you learnt during that process?

We learnt that nothing is ever a waste so we must not
just look at it at the face value. Hence, waste should
not just be disposed of – especially the waste that is
non-biodegradable. It can be used alternatively to do
different things; for example, from our findings, we
discovered that banana peels have the ability to
absorb heavy metals found in waste oil. Our team
spirit was really built up, and we learnt to trust one
another’s abilities. We also learnt that success can
never be achieved at once, we learnt to identify
success in the midst of failure as we failed repeatedly
in our experiment but we never gave up.

2. Why do you believe that education is so important?

Education is important especially for children
because it opens them to new ideas on how to make
the world a better place both economically and
developmentally. It lays the foundation for
refinement of creative thinking and abilities. It
empowers human beings, especially the women,
preventing them from being relegated.

3. What are some of the education challenges facing
children in Nigeria?

The value attached to education is not as important
as it should be, especially for the female child in the
northern part of the country. Some people still
believe that investment in a girl’s education is
wasteful as they will eventually end up in the kitchen.
Violence and terrorism are also challenges facing
children in Nigeria especially in the northern part of
the country. When there is fear among the children,
their minds are not entirely opened to learning. And
the teachers, some stop coming to school to teach
the children because of the fear of losing their lives.
Boko Haram is against Western education and they
had been involved in the killing of many – especially
students, children and mothers – and kidnapping and
destruction of schools and government property. The
kidnapping of over 200 Chibok girls is still fresh on
our minds. It is nearly a year now and the girls are
yet to be found.

4. We’ve heard you say before that if girls are given
the opportunity to study science they will realize how
good they are at it. Why do you think that all around
the world we still have a situation where fewer girls
than boys pursue maths, science or engineering
related fields? How do we change that?

Most men in the world today especially in the
developing economies believe women are the weaker
vessels so it is preferable for them to study what they
perceived as less demanding courses and careers
like fashion and music, and to leave core science
subjects and careers like medical sciences and
engineering to men, who they believe have more
guts.
It has taken few bold women to take on those
subjects and compete with men…but those women
didn’t just do that without education. Many schools
are encouraging girls to actively compete with the
boys! My school, Doregos Private Academy, has
really believed in the potential of the girls, and we are
given the same rights and privileges as the boys. If
every girl child is given a good education, they can
level up with men and even be better. Behind every
great man is a greater woman, so who says we are
the weaker vessels?
5. What do world leaders – in government and
business – need to do to make quality education a
reality for all children?
Free and compulsory education must be provided for
all children. Every child has a dream and ambition, all
they need is moral and financial support. More
should be made available in country budgets for
education. If world leaders can provide that, then the
whole world will be moving to a greater level of
development….It is time we make sure that we leave
a positive mark on every child; that they will
remember for the rest of time. The future doesn’t
begin tomorrow, it starts now.

Politics / I Don't Convert Christians To Islam,gov Okorocha Declares by Charlesdonald(m): 10:19am On Feb 08, 2015
More than 48 hours after an Owerri based
newspaper published a report that Governor
Rochas Okorocha of Imo State is converting
some Christians to Islam, the governor has
finally cleared the air on the matter.
According to Daily Trust newspaper report online,
Okorocha, while speaking during a debate organised
by the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) Imo
State chapter, denied the report and also
condemned the recent attack on his person.
The governor, who said he is a devoted Christian
and that he contributed to the building of the
National Worship Centre in Abuja, also used the
platform to warn against the use of religion to
destabilise the country
Okorocha wondered why anyone would make such
allegation against him, describing the allegation as
falsehood purported to cause problem between him
and the Catholic Church.

Business / 51-Year-Old Nigerian Bought As A Toy By A Rich White Kid by Charlesdonald(m): 9:13am On Feb 07, 2015
The Toy, a popular 80s movie, was about a spoiled rich white kid who buys a black man (played by Richard Pryor). Now there is a real life story: Wallace Turnquist purchased Ezekiel Akpu-nku from Nigeria as a playmate and servant for this 13-year-old son, Skyler.

“Last year I took Sky on a hunting safari to Africa and he was delighted by the African people,” Wallace Turnquist told WSB-TV. “How funny they were, how they were always smiling and so eager to please. At first he just wanted to take one, but I told him kidnapping was illegal. So instead, I bought him one.”

Since slavery and human trafficking are illegal, Turnquist gave Ezekiel a five year employment contract that pays $1,000 per year plus room/board, one day off per month and unlimited snacks. Ezekiel’s contract states that he must do whatever Skyler tells him to do so long as it is not illegal.

“This one time I made him stand on one foot for the entire day,” Skyler Turnquist said. “I also made him eat a spider. He does whatever I say. He’s the best toy ever.”

“I’m very happy to be Skyler’s toy, ” Akpu-nku said. “In Africa I was starving, here, in the land of opportunity, my belly never go hungry.”

Turnquist said Skyler already wants another “African toy” but his father has said no this time.

“I don’t want Sky getting spoiled. If I buy him another African, he’ll just want more. I think owning one African is enough.”

Education / No More Election Break For YABATECH Student by Charlesdonald(m): 8:40am On Feb 07, 2015
YABATECH: Academic
Board Nullifies 2015 Polls Holiday
The Academic Board of Yaba College has nullified the
22days
polls holiday earlier announced for the College
students.
The Board, consisting of the College Management, All
Chief
Lecturers and Heads of Departments, at an emergency
meeting
Friday, February 6, 2015 ruled that Government
directive
barring holidays for the polls is upheld.
Education Minister, Mallam Ibrahim Shekrau had on
Monday,
announced that no public institution should send
students
home because of the elections.
He argued that schools have wasted much time during
past
strike actions by the unions, and needed to firm up the
academic calendar to restore sanity.
The management has assured staffs and students that
additional security measures would be put in place
within and
around the college to safeguard life & properties.
Students are
however advised to go about their studies which are
the major
drive that brought them to the college, and to subject
themselves to security checks when demanded.
Night crawlers and other students who keep late night
outside
have been warned to distance themselves from the
college as
late entrance would not be tolerated.
Thank You
