Politics / Don’t Shift Elections Again, UN Tells Nigerian Government by Charlesdonald(m): 1:47pm On Feb 21, 2015 |
The United Nations has urged the Nigerian government to ensure the sanctity of new dates for its general elections, amid increasing concerns the government may yet again move the crucial polls from March 28 and April 11. The general elections were shifted from February 14 and 28 by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, over security fears. Many Nigerians and the international community have urged the government to ensure the polls are not shifted the second time. The main opposition, All Progressives Congress, APC, says the government instigated the first shift to avoid the defeat of President Goodluck Jonathan at the polls. In a statement Friday, the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, “strongly” urged the Nigerian government and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to respect the new dates and ensure there are no further shifts. “Following the postponement of general elections in Nigeria to 28 March and 11 April, the Secretary-General strongly urges the Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure these new dates are maintained, in accordance with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution,” a statement by the world body said. Mr. Ban’s statement came days after the head of INEC, Attahiru Jega, told Nigerian Senators he could not commit to the sanctity of the new dates for the elections, saying that was outside the powers of the electoral body. Speaking Thursday, President Goodluck Jonathan said the elections will hold as scheduled by INEC. The United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Ban, welcomed the president’s commitment to the new calendar. He commended the progress made by INEC in the preparation for the elections, including the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards. He urged all relevant national institutions to continue to work with INEC to ensure all voters can exercise their constitutional right to participate in the elections freely and without intimidation. The Secretary-General expressed strong concern over reports of election-related violence. He urged all political leaders to adhere to their commitments under the Abuja Accord, to refrain from inflammatory statements and to immediately condemn any statements from their supporters that amount to an incitement to violence or subversion of the electoral process. The Secretary-General reiterated to Nigerians that the United Nations will be closely following developments and is offering its full support to Nigeria at this important moment. A childless couple in India has decided to bequeath their entire property, house, land and bank deposits to their pet monkey, news reports said on Thursday. Sabista and Brijesh Srivastava, residents of Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh State, have set up a trust that would oversee their property after their death. According to the couple, their main beneficiary will be their monkey, Chunmun. The couple was in the process of selecting wildlife enthusiasts as members of the Chunmun Trust, which would look after the welfare of monkeys in India. Sabista Srivastava said she got her first monkey Tintin from a neighbour who was maltreating the animal and when she objected sold it to her. Tintin died soon after and the Srivastavas bought Chunmun in 2005 and brought him up in luxury. According to the report, his room has an air- conditioner for the summer and a heater in winter. In 2010, Chunmun was married to Bitti, a female monkey. “Every year, on the monkeys’ wedding anniversary, the Srivastavas host a dinner for about 1,000 people and feed wild monkeys in the neighbourhood. “Ever since Tintin and Chunmun came into our lives, we have prospered and we feel it is due to them. “They are our children and it is our duty to ensure that they are well looked after even when we are gone,’’ Sabista Srivastava, a lawyer, was quoted as saying by Asian Age. Sports / Kanu Nwankwo was Named No 13 For Arsenal 50 Greatest Player in 2008 by Charlesdonald(m): 9:27pm On Feb 17, 2015 |
Olympic Gold medal winner Kanu arrived at Arsenal in 1999 already boasting an impressive haul of accolades and trophies. By the time he left North London five years later, he had added two Premier League titles and two FA Cup medals. But it wasn’t always plain-sailing for the Nigerian striker. In 1996, after leading his nation to Olympic glory in Atlanta, Kanu underwent a medical examination at Inter Milan — he had moved to the Italian giants from Dutch outfit Ajax Amsterdam with whom he won the Champions League — and the result was harrowing. It was revealed that the marksman was suffering a serious heart defect, and in November of that year Kanu had surgery to replace an aortic valve. Far from let the adversity get him down, Kanu used his experience, and already escalating fame in Africa, to set up the Kanu Heart Foundation, an organisation that helps predominantly young people on the continent. His philanthropic work is just an example of his human touch. Kanu’s touch was equally good on the football pitch. He joined the Gunners in the wake of Nicolas Anelka’s departure to Real Madrid and, at first, failed to woo the crowd with his languid demeanour around the pitch. Soon, though, Kanu’s attributes became apparent and the cheeky smile he carried with him throughout won over the Highbury faithful. Kanu could operate both as a target man or as a deep-sitting conductor of play. He had the ability to bamboozle defenders in the blink of an eye, using superb close control to wriggle out of tight spots. He was often the scorer of great goals, too. His delicious flick-of-the heel goal in a 6-1 rout against Middlesbrough springs straight to mind, as does the time in a North London derby when he scooped the ball over a despairing Luke Young before emphatically burying the ball beyond Ian Walker. However the moment Kanu will best be remembered for was the mesmeric finale to a 17- minute hat-trick at Stamford Bridge in 1999. Having already notched twice to haul Arsenal level with Chelsea, the Nigerian sealed victory with one of the finest goals in the history of the Premier League. He won possession by the left by-line and found himself faced with, first, an out of position goalkeeper, then two defenders and a narrowing angle. Ed de Goey was slithered past with a subtle shimmy before Kanu unleashed a curling effort which arrowed into the far top corner. The points were Arsenal’s and a place in the Club’s history was Kanu’s. This list of 50 Gunners Greatest Players was determined by tens of thousands of Arsenal fans from across the world. The vote took place on the Club’s official website from May 5 to 19. To help prevent multiple voting by a single person, only registered members of Arsenal.com could take part. Politics / Obasanjo Tears PDP Membership Card In Public? by Charlesdonald(m): 1:05pm On Feb 16, 2015 |
Here’s the news making headlines out of Abeokuta today: Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday frustrated himself out of the Peoples Democratic Party. Obasanjo to further express his frustration, tore his PDP membership registration card. The former president announced to members of the party from his Ward II in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State, when they visited him at his Hilltop mansion residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. The Chairman of the party in the ward, Alhaji Usman Oladunjoye, led the delegation.Obasanjo ordered Oladunjoye to tear his (Obasanjo’s) PDP membership card at the meeting. The move according to those who witnessed the event was hailed with a thunderous applause. Obasanjo said he has now become a statesman. He equally denied the allegation by President Goodluck Jonathan that he was plotting to head an Interim National Government, which was the reason advanced by the administration at the centre for the recent criticism of the regime by Obasanjo. Politics / Nigeria And A Fading Future By Dr. Sandra Chidinma Duru -eluobi by Charlesdonald(m): 7:04am On Feb 16, 2015 |
There is little or no doubt that Nigeria remains a popular nation not just in Africa but in the world. To me, it is of course, preferable to be unpopular than to be renown for discreditable reasons. Nigeria, a country endowed with immeasurable human and material resources has been marginalized and relegated to the bottom owing to the demonstration of sheer incompetence of her leaders. With no fear or favour, the greatest of all the challenges confronting our dear nation is that of leadership! The saying, that in the land of the one-eyed, the two-eyed is not a king but an enemy is better illustrated with the Nigeria scenario.. Even when the bible says in the book of John chapter 8 verse 6-New Living Translation " ...He Straightened up, and said to them, He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her"...John 8 vs 7 KJV -- So when they continued asking Him " He lifted up Himself, and said unto them, he that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her" , in our own land Nigeria, the sane Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was suspended based on vague and unproven infractions which appeal not to the sensibilities of many Nigerians. The pertinent question that must be asked is, can 'our leaders' give any logical explanation to the $9.3 Million starched away in a private aircraft to another man's land purported to be money voted for the acquisition of ammunition to do God knows what with? While it is reported that 20 percent of Nigerians feed on less than $1 daily? (POLL Vanguard 21 May,2013.), definitely, the $9.3 million and over $20 billion dollars missing would be of immense contribution if channelled toward poverty eradication. With the picture of the two that I have painted, who can be said to be unaccountable and financially reckless? It's a pity we don't celebrate legends of rectitude and fairness anymore. It is only in Nigeria that a leader can use the channel of the threat of violent insurgency to justify misrule, incompetence and insensitivity without a substantial step taken by his followers to threaten his position, not even by pronouncing impeachment. For how long will we endure this? I have always believed in good governance and I advocated for good leadership and Nigeria's development. If Nigeria would be better, it's definitely not with the leadership style of someone who seeks four years to exhibit competence that couldn't have been exhibited for over six years. Nigerians are not credulous enough to fall for such laughable persuasion while our blood is used to lubricate the wheel of the Abuja-based government. We must at this point in time leave the fool's paradise. While good people of Nigeria advocate for good governance, the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) has severally got me staring at my television in utmost bewilderment, seriously thinking if I am actually not residing in another Nigeria after seeing numerous songs and act of praise for Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. What has president GEJ done about the good initiative of Pre adult Affairs Organisation's STUDENTS AND YOUTH SUPPORT PROGRAM, THE STUDENT AND YOUTHS RIGHTS AND WELFARE BILL? Instead of working with creative and great minds/ youths, he surrounded himself with praise singers who derive pleasure in presenting corrupt students leaders under the umbrella of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to endorse him as their presidential candidate while Mr. President gave a handsome price of Ten Million Naira. A fund that was reasonably suppose to be used for students/youths development programs and projects was unanimously shared among the so-called student leaders. Is this the type of leadership and management we want in Nigeria? Transformation Ambassador of Nigeria is a body proclaiming to uphold One-Vision...... Interesting! I wouldn't be surprised to see that this group of greedy campaigners hiding under the cloak of ambassadorship doesn't literally comprehend what it means to be transformation ambassadors. How could you possibly use positivity to solicit mayhem on your own countrymen? While TAN is dressing GEJ in a delusion of grandeur, I still strongly hold my opinion that, another four years of GEJ leadership is tantamount to eternity in hell! If the One-vision being upheld by TAN is to bring back President Jonathan as our President come 2015, then I have this to say to TAN, devoid of any political affiliation, influence or partisanship, but as a concerned citizen with utmost patriotism: TAN! May your families be transformed just "the same way" His Excellency President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has transformed Nigeria! Did I hear you say,"Ameeen"? Nigeria, a country full of sensible, vibrant and incorruptible youths is pitiably under the control of a man who sees stealing of public fund as an "ordinary" act and not corruption. Now, I keep wondering what a perfect example of corruption is! Today, we make loud demands for PEACE. Peace! Peace!! Peace!!! Peace we call upon! Peace we need to grow! Peace we seek to live together! Peace we need here and there! Peace to make us grow bigger and better! Peace; a disposition free from stress, war, insurgencies and anxiety. Nigeria; a nation bedevilled with several unmentionable atrocities, abduction, sporadic bombing raids, Child abuse, assasination, defamatory politicking and objectionable pronouncements, religious and tribal discrimination, unaccountability of public office holders, character assassination among others, also call for peace insistently and noisily. So, I must say in essence and substance that Peace will NEVER reign in my dear country Nigeria if we don't begin to perceive and tolerate one another from our areas of convergence as opposed to our areas of divergence, if we don't start seeing each other as a unified whole, if our conscience is still beclouded by tribalism, if the love of money is chosen over the love for humanity, if we still outrightly find it hard to accept that there's is right to religion and most importantly, if we do not seek a SUDDEN, RADICAL and COMPLETE change in our political class and government as a whole- Revolution! I hereby call upon the teeming mission-critical and incorruptible youth of Nigeria to reasonably support and choose an exemplary leader capable of imposing standard amidst multitudes and ready to make Nigeria a world-class nation among her contemporaries. After Revolution, Peace then come to stay! Nairaland / General / List Of 50 Famous People Who Were Early Rejected In Life by Charlesdonald(m): 7:15pm On Feb 14, 2015 |
They Did Not Give Up so you should not give up your dreams . 50 famous people who were repeatedly rejected early in their careers but went on to become household names... Albert Einstein Did not speak until he was 4-years-old and did not read until he was 7. His parents thought he was "sub- normal," and one of his teachers described him as "mentally slow, unsociable, and adrift forever in foolish dreams." He was expelled from school and was refused admittance to the Zurich Polytechnic School. He did eventually learn to speak and read. Even to do a little math. Beethoven Handled the violin awkwardly and preferred playing his own compositions instead of improving his technique. His teacher called him "hopeless as a composer." And, of course, you know that he wrote five of his greatest symphonies while completely deaf. Leo Tolstoy Flunked out of college. He was described as both "unable and unwilling to learn." No doubt a slow developer. Walt Disney Was fired by a newspaper editor because "he lacked imagination and had no good ideas." He went bankrupt several times before he built Disneyland. In fact, the proposed park was rejected by the city of Anaheim on the grounds that it would only attract riffraff. Winston Churchill Failed sixth grade. He was subsequently defeated in every election for public office until he became Prime Minister at the age of 62. He later wrote, "Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never - in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never, Never, Never, Never give up." (his capitals, mind you) Thomas Edison His teachers said he was "too stupid to learn anything." He was fired from his first two jobs for being "non- productive." As an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, "How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?" Edison replied, "I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps." Abraham Lincoln As a young man went to war a captain and returned a private. Afterwards, he was a failure as a businessman. As a lawyer in Springfield, he was too impractical and temperamental to be a success. He turned to politics and was defeated in his first try for the legislature, again defeated in his first attempt to be nominated for congress, defeated in his application to be commissioner of the General Land Office, defeated in the senatorial election of 1854, defeated in his efforts for the vice-presidency in 1856, and defeated in the senatorial election of 1858. At about that time, he wrote in a letter to a friend, "I am now the most miserable man living. If what I feel were equally distributed to the whole human family, there would not be one cheerful face on the earth." Sigmund Freud Was booed from the podium when he first presented his ideas to the scientific community of Europe. He returned to his office and kept on writing. Charles Darwin Gave up a medical career and was told by his father, "You care for nothing but shooting, dogs and rat catching." In his autobiography, Darwin wrote, "I was considered by all my masters and my father, a very ordinary boy, rather below the common standard of intellect." Clearly, he evolved. Vince Lombardi An expert said of him: "He possesses minimal football knowledge and lacks motivation." Lombardi would later write, "It's not whether you get knocked down; it's whether you get back up." Babe Ruth Is famous for his past home run record, but for decades he also held the record for strikeouts. He hit 714 home runs and struck out 1,330 times in his career (about which he said, "Every strike brings me closer to the next home run.". And didn't Mark McGwire break that strikeout record? (John Wooden once explained that winners make the most errors.) Michael Jordan & Bob Cousy Were each cut from their high school basketball teams. Jordan once observed, "I've failed over and over again in my life. That is why I succeed." Stan Smith was rejected as a ball boy for a Davis Cup tennis match because he was "too awkward and clumsy." He went on to clumsily win Wimbledon and the U. S. Open. And eight Davis Cups. Charles Schultz Had every cartoon he submitted rejected by his high school yearbook staff. Oh, and Walt Disney wouldn't hire him. Fred Astaire After his first screen test the memo from the testing director of MGM, dated 1933, read, "Can't act. Can't sing. Slightly bald. Can dance a little." He kept that memo over the fire place in his Beverly Hills home. Astaire once observed that "when you're experimenting, you have to try so many things before you choose what you want, that you may go days getting nothing but exhaustion." And here is the reward for perseverance: "The higher up you go, the more mistakes you are allowed. Right at the top, if you make enough of them, it's considered to be your style." Sidney Poitier After his first audition was told by the casting director, "Why don't you stop wasting people's time and go out and become a dishwasher or something?" It was at that moment, recalls Poitier, that he decided to devote his life to acting. Lucille Ball When she began studying to be actress in 1927, she was told by the head instructor of the John Murray Anderson Drama School, "Try any other profession." Jerry Seinfeld The first time he walked on-stage at a comedy club as a professional comic, he looked out at the audience, froze, and forgot the English language. He stumbled through "a minute-and a half" of material and was jeered offstage. He returned the following night and closed his set to wild applause. Marilyn Monroe In 1944, Emmeline Snively, director of the Blue Book Modeling Agency, told modeling hopeful Norma Jean Baker, "You'd better learn secretarial work or else get married." I'm sure you know that Norma Jean was Marilyn Monroe. Now . . . who was Emmeline Snively? Jeanne Moreau At the age of 21 was told by a casting director that her head was too crooked, she wasn't beautiful enough, and she wasn't photogenic enough to make it in films. She took a deep breath and said to herself, "Alright, then, I guess I will have to make it my own way." After making nearly 100 films her own way, in 1997 she received the European Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award. Harrison Ford After his first performance as a hotel bellhop in the film Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round, the studio vice- president called him in to his office. "Sit down kid," the studio head said, "I want to tell you a story. The first time Tony Curtis was ever in a movie he delivered a bag of groceries. We took one look at him and knew he was a movie star." Ford replied, "I thought you were supposed to think that he was a grocery delivery boy." The vice president dismissed Ford with "You ain't got it kid , you ain't got it ... now get out of here." Michael Caine His headmaster told him, "You will be a laborer all your life." Charlie Chaplin Was initially rejected by Hollywood studio chiefs because his pantomime was considered "nonsense." Enrico Caruso His music teacher said he had no voice at all and could not sing. His parents wanted him to become an engineer. The Beatles Were turned down by Decca Records who said "We don't like their sound. Groups of guitars are on their way out." After Decca rejected the Beatles, Columbia records followed suit. Elvis Presley Was fired in 1945 by Jimmy Denny, manager of the Grand Ole Opry, after one performance. He told Presley, "You ain't goin' nowhere, son. You ought to go back to drivin' a truck." The Impressionists Had to arrange their own art exhibitions because their works were routinely rejected by the Paris Salon. How many of you have heard of the Paris Salon? Picasso A Paris art dealer refused him shelter when he asked if he could bring in his paintings from out of the rain. One hopes that there is justice in this world and that the art dealer eventually went broke. Van Gogh Sold only one painting during his life. And this to the sister of one of his friends for 400 francs (approximately $50). This didn't stop him from completing over 800 paintings. John Constable His luminous painting Watermeadows at Salisbury was dismissed in 1830 by a judge at the Royal Academy as "a nasty green thing." Auguste Rodin His father once said, "I have an idiot for a son." Described as the worst pupil in the school, he was rejected three times admittance to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. His uncle called him uneducable. Perhaps this gave him food for thought. Igor Stravinsky Was run out of town by an enraged audience and critics after the first performance of the Rite of Spring. Louisa May Alcott The author of 'Little Women' was encouraged to find work as a servant by her family. E.E Cummings 15 published rejected his manuscript. When he finally got it published by his mother, the dedication, printed in uppercase letters, read WITH NO THANKS TO . . . followed by the list of publishers who had rejected his prized offering. Nice going Eddie. Thanks for illustrating that nobody loses all the time. Emily Dickinson Only had seven poems published in her lifetime. Richard Hooker 21 publishers rejected his humorous war novel, M*A*S*H. He had worked on it for seven years. James Joyce 22 publishers rejected 'The Dubliners'. Dr. Seuss 27 publishers rejected his first book 'To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street'. Jack London Received six hundred rejection slips before he sold his first story. John Creasey The English crime novelist got 753 rejection slips before he published 564 books. William Saroyan Accumulated more than a thousand rejections before he had his first literary piece published. John Milton Wrote Paradise Lost 16 years after losing his eyesight. Gertrude Stein Submitted poems to editors for nearly 20 years before one was finally accepted. Louis Pasteur Was only a mediocre pupil in undergraduate studies and ranked 15th out of 22 students in chemistry. Henry Ford Failed and went broke five times before he succeeded. F. W. Woolworth was not allowed to wait on customers when he worked in a dry goods store because, his boss said, "he didn't have enough sense." R. H. Macy Failed seven times before his store in New York City caught on. Bell Telephone When struggling to get started, its owners offered all their rights to Western Union for $100,000. The offer was disdainfully rejected with the pronouncement, "What use could this company make of an electrical toy." Robert Goddard Found his ideas bitterly rejected by his scientific peers on the grounds that rocket propulsion would not work in the rarefied atmosphere of outer space. |

Father Mbaka Blasts Jonathan Again! This Time his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan Was Not Spared.(VIDEO) Following his widely publicised sermon on new year eve, that tore President Goodluck Jonathan’s policies to pieces, Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka has been recorded hitting hard on the president again and this time, his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan was not spared. Speaking in both English and Igbo language, Mbaka dismissed suggestions that he is a two-faced individual based on the fact that he received the first lady in his ministry few weeks before his controversial outburst.Recall that in November 2014, Mbaka welcomed the First Lady, the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and others to his Enugu parish. He told ‘Mama Peace’ as the Firstly Lady is popularly called that her husband had “done well” and deserved another tenure at the Aso Rock.Mbaka while reacting to the criticisms, quoted a verse in the bible and gave a biblical instance where God supported one of his prophets and later withdrew the support because of the deeds of the prophet. He further revealed that when he met both President Jonathan and his wife, they refused his request to give him their phone numbers so he could reach them whenever he has a revelation about them or the country. He also debunked rumours that he was bribed by opposition politicians to say out all he did at the new year eve service saying, “I don’t know Buhari, I have never met him” Source: www.biafragalaxynews.com/2015/02/father-mbaka-blasts-jonathan-againthis.html?m=1 Video: http:// afikpochic..com/2015/02/father-mbaka-blasts- jonathan-againthis.html |

Nairaland / General / Suspicious Fire Burns US Islamic Center In Texas by Charlesdonald(m): 12:59pm On Feb 14, 2015 |
A massive fire has broken out at an Islamic center in southeast Houston, Texas ahead of Friday morning prayers, damaging and destroying most of the building. According to officials, an accelerant was used in the fire that started around 5 a.m. However, the cause of the fire is still unknown. The Quba Islamic Institute, which provides services for about 100 families, was closed when the fire started and that no one was injured. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has called for an investigation into whether the fire was the result of a possible hate crime as fire officials say the use of accelerant usually points to a purposeful act. Ahsan Zahid, assistant Imam at the CAIR, said, "They (fire fighters) said their dog went through and he hit on some substances inside the place, and he said, 'From what I see right now at this point, I have to say it was an incendiary fire which means that it was started on purpose.' That's all we can go on at this point. I don't want to speculate." The fire burnt a back building which was used for storing books, renovation supplies, and furniture. "The damage on the back building is total," said Houston Fire Department district chief Ken Tyner. "The whole entire building back there is burned up." Zahid also said that a vandalized, smashed table was found by fire fighters, noting that the night before the incident occurred someone had driven by shouting mocking chants. In addition, Hala Saadeh, who uses the community center, says the very first thing that comes to mind is a “hate crime.” The incident happened at the time that three young Muslim students, one male and two female, were shot dead in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Tuesday. Mohammad Abu-Salha, the father of the two female students, told the crowd during their funereal on Thursday that they were victims of a hate crime.
