Kenneth Omeruo has today (Tuesday) joined Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the season. Omeruo, 20, can operate as a central-defender or right-back and spent the early part of this season training with the first team squad having returned from a loan spell at ADO Den Haag in the Netherlands. After moving to Den Haag in January 2012, shortly after signing for Chelsea, Omeruo established himself as a regular in the side and scored his first goal against FC Groningen towards the end of the 2011/12 season. The youngster remained at the club for the whole of the 2012/13 campaign in which he continued to flourish. His displays at club level led to a call-up for the senior Nigeria squad ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations where, after coming on as a substitute in their opening game, he played the full 90 minutes in the following five matches as the Super Eagles won the tournament. Omeruo spent the majority of last season playing at centre-back, and he was again involved for Nigeria during their Confederations Cup campaign in the summer, playing in all three games. He also helped Nigeria secure their place at the 2014 World Cup finals, recovering from a shoulder injury to play in the second leg of their qualification play-off win against Ethiopia. Omeruo made his first appearance in a Chelsea shirt for the Under-21s in a 3-3 draw against West Ham United in November. http://m.chelseafc.com/news-display/OMERUO-JOINS-MIDDLESBROUGH-ON-LOAN/3607926 |
Impressed Chelsea are to extend Kenneth Omeruo’s contract soon, his adviser Conleth Chika Akujobi has informed M TNFootball.com The contract of the 20-year-old Omeruo at Stamford Bridge will be up in June 2015 and Akujobi has specially revealed that talks are on-going for a new deal for the highly promising defender. “Chelsea are happy with Kenneth and they will extend his contract as a result,” he said. Akujobi will join Omeruo from his Dutch base of Rotterdam on Monday for the trip to English Championship side Middlesbrough, where the player has agreed a five-month loan deal. The Nigeria star spent a season and a half at Dutch club ADO Den Haag on loan from Chelsea. “Kenneth was at Middlesbrough and he liked what he saw there and has accepted to move on loan there till the end of the season,” Akujobi said. “They were once in the Premier League and so have some great facilities and also have ambitions of coming up again.” “We will be back at Middlesbrough on Monday to finalise the paper work for his loan deal and he could even begin training with his new club on Tuesday.” Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni feature for ‘Boro when they were in the top flight. http://www.mtnfootball.com/m/europe/epl/news/2014/jan/chelsea-to-extend-omeruo-contract.html |

The Nigeria U20 team, the Falconets are step closer to the FIFA U-20 Women World Cup in Canada as they won their first leg of the qualifiers against Sierra Leone 10-0. Four from first half substitute Uchechi Sunday, a brace from Halimatu Ayinde and Chidinma Edeji, one from Patience Okaeme have made the Sierra Leone dream of making it to the Women World Cup almost impossible. The Falconets opened scoring as early as the 11th minute through Halimat Ayinde, Chidinma Edeji made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute while Halimat scored her second in the 25th minute. Injured Bayelsa Queens ace, Yetunde Adeboyejo goes off, to be replaced by Rivers Angels’ forward Sunday Uchechi who made an immediate impact with a brace, scoring one from open play in the 37th minute and the other just a minute later from the penalty spot after Winifred Eyebhiora was brought down in the penalty area. The second half started strongly with the Falconets taking control of proceedings. Uchechi scored her third goal in the 52nd minute and her fourth six minutes later. Edeji made it eight after from an Uchechi assist. Okaeme got the ninth goal in the 78th minute from a corner. Uchechi finished it off on the stroke of 90 minutes.

Former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh has warned the coach Stephen Keshi led-side not to treat the game against Ethiopia with levity stressing that against the thinking of many, the East African side has improved tremendously from the last time the Super Eagles handed them a 2-0 defeat at the AFCON 2013.http://sunnewsonline.com/new/sports/eagles-wont-easy-ethiopia-oliseh/

Strike Will Soon Be Called Off - NUC President. Prof. Julius Okojie, Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) says he is confident that the protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will soon be called off. Okojie, who spoke on Wednesday in Abuja at a media parley with journalists, said the commission was doing everything within its powers to ensure a speedy resolution of the issues raised by ASUU so that students could return school. “We are part of the system and we understand the issues, we are meeting with members of the union all the time and the issues are being tackled. “So, we are optimistic the strike will soon be called off and our children can go back to school in the shortest possible time.’’ He also reacted to the call by ASUU for NUC to be scrapped, saying “the call is not in good faith as the commission has not gone to sleep over its duties”. Also speaking on the recurrent disagreements between the commission and some professional bodies over accreditation and running of certain courses by some universities, Okojie acknowledged that there were issues that needed to be resolved between both parties. “There is no country in the world where regulatory bodies and professional bodies go to regulate at the same time. “So, it is true we are having problems with professional bodies in carrying out our mandate, but the issues too will soon be resolved and we can move on. The executive secretary, who said that the commission had closed many faculties not fit to run courses in certain universities, admitted that; “it is not easy to be a regulator’’. According to him, the commission was “silently regulating the system’’ having to also pay professional fees and encourage professors to do accreditation. (NAN) |
