I don't know peter obis intentions, but this looks more like a circus show to me. Obi said he went to Egypt to learn about Egypt's power sector, education, planning and finance sectors. You can't even learn about one sector in 3days not to talk of 4 sectors at once in 3days. Even if he wanted to learn anything, we are in the internet age. In the comfort of his home, he can interact with the Egyptians and get documents that show how they arrived where they are. I am surprised a lot of folks are carried away by this trip. It's more like tourism to me

Actually, every Nigerian benefits from power tarrif subsidies. It's why every DISCO cannot make a profit.

The subsidy monies they are paid barely covers their losses, and sometimes they don't even get paid.

Without subsides, we would be paying above N80 per kwh for power. (See the PwC report on the liquidity challenges in the power sector, available online, link below). As it is, depending on your band, everyone pays for power between N49-71 per kwh.

It was a big deal back then.

Eg in 1993, when IBB was told by Baroness Lynda Chalker to remove subsides. And Nigerians protested well well. Also back in the 1980'S there were campaigns for 'appropriate pricing of petrol'.

Same arguments used then are being used now against it.



It was. That's why there were partial removals throughout. In 1981, fuel cost 15 kobo, by 1994 it cost N5. It was putting pressure on the economy then. as it is now. (SEE BELOW image for a history of such partial removals)



Because the chickens were comming home to roost.

By 1999, it was costing us money to subsidise fuel, plus the refineries were not getting maintained on schedule...and that was from the 1990's...something was up.



Well, right now it costs over N300 to refine one liter of fuel. Assuming we refine it here, subsidy means that liter has to be sold below N170 naira to the marketers.

Would you build a refinery or own a refinery under those circumstances?

That is what we have been doing for decades...and we are reaping what we sowed.

It is because you don't get how subsidy works, that you blame corruption (and yes, corruption too is there, but it comes from the subsidy issue).

Subsidy is basically what you pay to the petroleum sector to compensate them for the loss they incurr in selling fuel at a loss, so that the poor can buy fuel.

The thing is, when you do that, you prevent the refineries from making money, and thus they cannot be kept working well, and they break down.

Also, and crucially, you keep the petroleum sector dependent on government money, which provides opportunites for corruption, because the money gets paid however the performance of the sector (like one of our lecturers used to joke back in university days when we students misbehaved...if I teach or don't teach, dem go still pay me. Mind, he did take his job seriously though). Free government money...opposrtunites to steal.


Removing subsidy means

1.More profits

2.NO GOVERNMENT MONEY IN FORM OF GRANTS, SUBVENTIONS, BUDGET ALLOWANCES.

3.The refineries would work...as sabotage, corruption and stealing would affect their profitability.

4.More jobs, and more money for those involved , including the elite. They would earn far more money than they are earning now. More jobs, etc....

5.WE export refined products and earn profits and revenue.

When the refineries where working, who was receiving the subsidy payment government was paying for products from the refineries?
