Nigeria is a unique place in the World by all standards. It is a place where anything is possible. It is a place so naturally endowed with abundant natural and human resources that we have practically all ‘brands’ of human beings; some exemplary in conduct, while some are only masters in pointing accusing fingers but quite hypocritical in real life. While it is normal to have these classifications in a normal habitation, what is, however, worrisome is that we presently have a situation where an individual who had eight years to lead by example and failed woefully, is now working tirelessly to unsettle his Successors who are working hard to fix the mess he created. What an irony! In 1999 after nearly two decades of military rule, Nigeria was ushered into the fourth attempt at democratic rule. The beneficiary of this new dispensation was Olusegun Obasanjo. Many People heaved a sigh of relief that the ex-General, who had just come out of Prison, was going to replicate Mandela in Nigeria. Most people thought because he had undergone the Prison experience just like Mandela, he would lead like a statesman devoid of bitterness, pettiness and rancor. How wrong we were! Instead of replicating Mandela, he rather attempted unsuccessfully to replicate Mugabe. He had the opportunity to be like Mandela but blew it on the altar of hypocrisy. It is against this background that I find his vituperations quite disturbing. How can one be preaching a gospel he never practised when he had the opportunity? What good governance did he practice while in office? What are his legacies? Hypocrisy simply means preaching what you don’t or never practiced. Mr. Obasanjo should examine his face in the mirror before he points his fingers at others. It is indisputable that Nigeria is passing through a difficult and challenging time. It is a well known fact that we are undergoing series of security challenges. It therefore demands that Leaders be statesmanlike in comments and actions. The current ranting of OBJ totally falls below the standard expected of a former President. His motives are quite questionable. Could it be the usual cry of a godfather who has been dumped by his anointed Son? Could it be patriotism? This is most unlikely! In one of his usual ranting, he even accused the entire National Assembly of being corrupt. Although it is true that corruption is endemic in our Society, it does not, however, justify labeling the entire institution of Parliament as corrupt. During his time everyone witnessed his type of ‘transparency.’ Everyone saw the desperate attempt made to remove Hon Ghali Umar Na’Abba from his position. It was, indeed, a national embarrassment when members of the Federal House of Representatives displayed the lorry load of money offered them to impeach the then Speaker Na’Abba. So did he just realize today that the National Assembly was corrupt? Did he not contribute to the problem in the National Assembly today? He actually planted the seed of this problem when he in 1999, prevented the popular candidate Okadigbo from emerging as the Leader of the National Assembly, and installed Enwerem as the Senate President. That was the root of the crisis in the National Assembly which set the tone for future executive interferences. He had the worst relationship with the Legislature in our history, and had a cat and mouse relationship with his Vice President. He is certainly not a democrat and, therefore, has no moral compass to navigate in the territory of transparency. The fact he continues to pour his venomous ranting unchallenged is attributable to the fact we have a President who is the very opposite of him, especially in terms of tolerance and liberality. Baba Iyabo would definitely not tolerate such ranting from a former head of state had he been the President. He should thank his stars that President Jonathan is generally calm and liberal, and not a vindictive person like him. If the truth must be told, suffice it to say that the foundation of over 90% of the present mess we have was rooted in the Obasanjo administration. Let us examine just a few of them just for illustrations. The issue of sharia and the security challenges it created. Obasanjo never addressed this volatile issue for fear of being labeled a bigot. He conveniently ignored the threats and openly boasted everywhere that Sharia would die a natural death. His approach was too lackadaisical for a President. Today he is still alive to see the consequences of his negligence of duty. Secondly his ill fated attempt to perpetuate himself in power which is commonly known as the third term gambit. This inordinate ambition to remain in power beyond the Constitutionally enshrined 8 years led to a desperate attempt to amend the Constitution and compromise our democratic institutions. It was alleged that billions of tax payers’ money was wasted in this abortive attempt. Although he has always denied this, his daughter Iyabo has however corroborated this well known fact that indeed he harbored this illicit ambition to do a ‘MUGABE’ and desperately attempted but failed to actualize this. The greatest injustice Mr. Obasanjo did to Nigeria was the alleged imposition of a sick Yar’Adua on Nigeria. Having failed to actualise his 3rd term gambit, Yar’Adua was the last joker he played. Although he denied ever knowing that Yar’Adua was terminally sick, many analysts continue to allege that he indeed knew of Yar’Adua health problems and merely tried to use him to achieve the third term through the back door. His daughter Iyabo has also buttressed the story that he indeed knew about the health conditions of Yar’Adua. The demise of Yar’Adua generated so much tension and led to a chain of reactions which are not yet resolved till date. What about his crude approach to Law enforcement? Can anyone forget how he ordered the military action in ODI which led to the massacre of an entire town? What about Zaki Biam? The list is endless. Under his regime, politically motivated assassinations were the order of the day. Till today nobody knows who killed Bola Ige, who killed Marshall Harry, who killed Dikibo, Okadigbo and so forth. I still remember the case of Anambra State in 2004 where a sitting governor was abducted by touts loyal to him allegedly with his connivance. I don’t want the reader to be bored regarding elections held under his watch. The fact that he described an election as a do or die affair sums it up. Political opponents had no space to operate. Elections held under his supervision could shame a banana republic. What is the point being made? The message I am sending across is that Nigeria has many problems which most of them were inherited from Obasanjo’s administration. The least he can do is to support and send his views across to the current President. All this ranting only exposes his hypocrisy. He had the opportunity to fix Nigeria for over eleven years. Did he build roads and bridges that have been closed by Jonathan? How can one be shamelessly preaching a gospel that is strange to him? Can someone tell baba Iyabo he has no moral justification to question this administration. If he had followed the example of Mandela Nigeria would have been different. He contributed greatly to the present mess. Each time he throws a dart at the present administration, I always expect him to make a comparative analysis but he doesn’t. I would love him to highlight his achievements for the eight years he was in charge. Leaders who accomplished while in office won’t need to be shouting for relevance when they leave office. Their records of achievements and accomplishments would always speak for them. But when there are no achievements to celebrate, it would be better to maintain a dignified silence. The recent autobiography he launched even without exercising patience to thrash out all legal impediments, in my opinion is the final self inflicted nail on his already battered reputation. The claims are simply idiotic. He sought to make a hero out of himself and tried to discredit others. The most laughable claim is the suggestion that the Presidency influenced his daughter Iyabo to write the open letter against him last December. If, indeed, the Presidency could influence his biological daughter, a former senator for that matter, to write against him, then it means that he has failed as a man. Iyabo going by her antecedents is a fully grown lady who speaks her mind without minding whose ox is gored. Charity begins at home. If a man cannot practise integrity in his own household, he has no basis to preach same to others. He is simply a family certified hypocrite. I do hope he doesn’t push Iyabo to publish the second volume of the open letter. Baba Iyabo should bury his head in shame. He needs to practise integrity before he can preach it. This book has finally exposed the scale of hypocrisy in OBJ. Nigerians can read between the lines and see the mischief that underpins his story. The timing is also questionable. One doesn’t have to be a genius so see that the publication of this book is linked to his latest role of a Navigator for the 2015 Elections. In the Yoruba pre-colonial political system, when a king is presented with an empty calabash by the senior chiefs, the King would be left with two options, either to commit suicide or go away on exile. I have read the open letter Iyabo wrote to her Dad Mr. Obasanjo a couple of times. That letter amounts to an open presentation of calabash by Iyabo to her dad. As a Christian I won’t advise Mr. Obasanjo to commit suicide. I would rather advise Mr. Obasanjo to either go on a dignified ‘exile’ of silence or assume his recent job of a navigator officially. That way each time he speaks it would be clear and evident to all that he is doing so as the navigator, not as a statesman. God bless Nigeria…. Following the ratification of President Goodluck Jonathan‘s candidature by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the North has resolved to adopt the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) as its consensus candidate for 2015. Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and the Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) on Friday said the North had resolved to support a northern candidate and since APC has fielded a candidate from the region, they have no alternative than to support him. They said, “President Jonathan shouldn’t be in the contest in the first place if the principle of zoning that was created by his party and the constitution is respected. He shouldn’t be a candidate by now.” The Chairman of ACF, Ibrahim Coomasie, a former Inspector General of Police, said, “First of all, the APC presidential primary and the PDP convention have clearly shown those who are ready to practice democracy. The APC’s primary was held smoothly without any rancour and all of them have come out to accept the result. That is a good omen for our democracy. I hope INEC will emulate that. “So, we are congratulating Gen. Muhammadu Buhari who has been winning primaries all through. Only when it comes to the general elections, he is always rigged out. We have also seen what happened in the other party. “I am the Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and we have said it before and we are reiterating it that, we are going to support a northern candidate. And since APC has voted a northern candidate, we are going to support him 100 per cent. So, Buhari is our candidate for the 2015 election.” He, however, said if Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, had won the APC primary, they would still have supported him because he was born and brought up in the North and has shown interest in the development of Nigeria and the region in particular. Chairman of organisation and Mobilisation committee of the People's Democratic Party in South West, Prince Buruji Kashamu has vowed to press criminal charges against former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. Kashamu in a press statement he personally signed yesterday, said, he would drag Obasanjo and other people who assisted him in the launch of his autobiography; My watch, after he had been barred by a court from launching it before the court. A court had ruled that, Obasanjo should not launch his autobiography titled My watch, which is believed to have criticised the government of President Goodluck Jonathan and other past governments. Obasanjo was also reported to have condemned the action of the PDP for making Kashamu a leader of the party in South West despite his alleged involvement in hard drugs overseas. But, the former President was said to have gone ahead and make the book public, the action , Kashanu, described as contempt of court. According to him,Chief Olusegun Obasanjo's action has again confirmed his knack for lawlessness and arbitrariness. Everybody knows that good governance is based on the Rule of Law, due process and respect for constituted authority. " It beats my imagination that this man can be sermonising about the good governance when he shamelessly advertises all the elements of bad governance. In short, he is bad governance personified. " He is the worst advertisement for the product he is trying to advertise - good governance. He has shown that he does not have respect for the judiciary, and that he is above the law. "But I ask my lawyers to press criminal contempt charges against him and all those who assisted him in flouting the orders of the court. I will ensure that they are all dragged before the court, and particularly, Obasanjo, without his cap, to show why he should not punished for criminal contempt. "By his unruly conduct, Chief Obasanjo has shown for the umpteenth time that he is indecent and uncivilised. Certainly, President Goodluck Jonathan and his predecessor, the late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and others he criticised in the controversial book, which I am reliably informed he did not write, are made of a sterner stuff than him. They are true democrats and gentlemen to the core. Source: m.allafrica.com/stories/201412100529.html/ |

Tragedy struck yesterday as a fresh graduate of the Imo State University took his last breath as students poured him water in jubilation of final year completion. What seem to be jubilation turned into a gathering of sorrow when the victim was running away from a number of students who pursued after him to pour dirty water on him. In that quest to dodge the water being poured on him, he fell into a soak-away pit and got drowned. The dirty water from the pit however is partially passing a light current as the pit is dug beside their transformer where earth-wire is buried. Pouring of water has been banned in schools but some students would not obey this. Many students in this light unaccepted celebration of final papers have been injured, poured acid and some other dangerous liquids while some other persons have gone to the great beyond via this. I think every final year student should learn from this as well as those who dedicate them to pouring water on university finalists.

NIgeria should come First......Before Jonathan and Buhari Nigeria First................Nigeria Always! |
The same signs that led to violence and deaths in the 2011 presidential election are here with us in an even more pronounced state. The do-or-die attitude, the demonisation of the opponent, the threats of violence, the accusation of plans to rig election, the whipping up of ethnic and religious sentiments, the blatant lies, the intolerance and naked hatred. The clouds are indeed dark. And this is caused by the fanatics of a former head of state, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), of the All Progressives Congress, who is tipped the win the APC ticket, and the die-hards of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, the incumbent President, who is seeking re-election. From both camps, there is palpable desperation to ensure that the opposing candidate does not win the February 2015 election. You get a feeling that it is an abomination for the other to win the election. To the Buharists, the only living Nigerian who can turn the nation’s fortunes around is Buhari. Once he takes over, Nigeria will become an El Dorado. Perhaps, if Buhari were to pass on, Nigeria’s situation would be hopeless. Therefore, anybody who does not support Buhari’s candidacy is corrupt, unpatriotic, tribalistic, narrow-minded, and blinded by religious myopia. It’s either Buhari or nobody else. Furthermore, to the Buharists, the only way Buhari can lose the forthcoming election (just like that of 2011) will be through rigging. Therefore, they are prepared to “defend” their votes. The meaning of “to defend their votes” can be anything to those the message is continually sent to. In practical terms, there is no accurate way of determining if an election has been rigged. Ironically, the people who determine whether an election has been rigged or not are the same people who claim that the only way their candidate can lose is through rigging. So, the stage for violence, perhaps worst than what was witnessed in 2011, has been set. For the Jonathanians, it is not possible for Buhari to win an election. Whatever needs to be done to stop him must be done. Any mention of Buhari gets them agitated and irritated. To them, Jonathan is not just the best president of Nigeria since independence in 1960, but also the best thing since sliced bread. If he is not given a fresh four-year tenure next year, there will be trouble in the land. And given that he is from the Niger Delta and the first president from there, if he does not get a second term, then, it is unjust and a clear statement that the Niger Delta’s oil is good to be used to develop the nation, but their son is not good enough to rule the country. And if Boko Haram can be used to make the nation ungovernable because someone from the South- South is president, then the Niger Delta militants will be used to make the nation not just ungovernable but also financially crippled, if a Niger Delta son is stampeded out of the Presidency. And this time, there won’t be any heeding of pleas to surrender their weapons and get an amnesty. For these two groups, there is no single redeeming grace in the opposing candidate. If Jonathan likes, let him build a duplex for each person in the nation and pay each person a million naira every month, he is the “worst president Nigeria has ever had”. Even if he constructs all the roads in Nigeria, it is mere “political gimmick and inducement”. The only good thing he can do is to announce his withdrawal from the election or lose the election. If any of the two happens, he will become human again and be praised for being exemplary. But currently, he can’t be treated like a human being. For the Jonathanians, if Buhari likes, let him convert to Christianity before the election, he is an Islamic fundamentalist and a hater of Christians. Even if he is shown on national TV in choir garb and singing the “Alleluia Chorus” or “Onward Christian Soldiers” in a rich baritone, the Jonathanians would scoff at that and call him a wolf in sheep’s clothing, trying to win votes. Even if he likes, let him change his name from “Muhammadu” to “Mmaduka” and wear the isi-agu and speak Igbo or Ijaw like a son of the soil, the Jonathanians would only sneer at his desperation. The only good thing that can come from Buhari is for him to announce his withdrawal from the race, or he loses at the APC primaries or loses at the presidential election and immediately and unequivocally accepts the result and calls his supporters to accept the result too. It is only when Buhari has lost the election that the amnesia of the Jonathanians will suddenly be healed. Then, they can remember that Buhari is a “nationalist, a man of integrity, a man who has served Nigeria meritoriously.” But as long as he is in the race and a threat to Jonathan, he will be continually dressed in the uniform of the devil and pummelled. It was therefore not bad advice from Sheik Ahmad Gumi to both Jonathan and Buhari not to contest next year’s election. But their passionate supporters will not hear of that, because they are convinced that in the prevailing circumstance, their candidate is the best candidate that can beat every other candidate and gain political power (and its concomitant benefits) from May 29, 2015. This contest is, therefore, not being run on policies and ideas but on ethnicity and religion. The weapon of fear is employed to the fullest. Thick mud is raked up and flung at the opponent continuously. It is very important that the security during the election be high and effective to forestall mayhem and carnage as witnessed in 2011. The insurgency in parts of the North has put a strain on our security capacity. It is doubtful if there will be enough security agents to man flash spots in the nation. There is no doubt that the use of security forces for the election will be called “militarisation” and attacked by some people, but it is important to ask them to provide a better alternative. Let them tell us, in practical terms, what they will do if after the election, some people start burning and killing. Ekiti and Osun states were “militarised” during the governorship elections in the states in June and August respectively. There were complaints but in the end, the elections reflected the wishes of the voters. When those who like to snatch ballot boxes, or those who love to scare away voters with machetes and guns, or those who love to protest, see the high presence of military personnel, they usually become calm. The Buharists and Jonathanians must stop instilling fear into people and wetting the ground for future violence. Having different political inclinations or sympathies is alright, but spreading hate through religion, ethnicity and political parties is dangerous. At all times, the interest of the nation must come first. Source: www.thenigerianblogger.com/between-buharists-and-jonathanians-the-gathering-storm/ |
In what may be seen as a stroke as of bad luck or a decline in the quality of Nigerian music, the 2014 Channel O Music Video Awards were completely dominated by South African acts. Singer Davido had been tipped before the ceremony to be a big winner as he had 5 nominatons, but the Aye singer walked home with none as he lost in all 5 categories, including 2 to South African Casper Nyovest. The only Nigerian winners on the night were Tiwa Savage, Olamide & Kcee, with P-Square, Seyi Shay,Flavour, 2Face, Niyola, Phyno & Patoranking also joining Davido in coming back home empty-handed.
