THE HAGUE - A Dutch court sentenced a young man on Monday to three years in jail for premeditated murder and preparing a terrorist attack after fighting with Islamist rebels in Syria and urging others to join the insurgency. The tribunal in The Hague said the man, identified only as Maher H., took part in armed conflict in Syria in 2013-2014 and, after his return to the Netherlands, spreading materials to incite others to commit similar crimes. European governments are worried that thousands of Western volunteers traveled to Syria and Iraq to join militant groups may return and carry out attacks at home. Around 120 Dutch nationals are believed to have joined hardline Islamic militant groups and criminal investigations have been launched into the activities of 60 other suspects. |
The Grammy - winning singer talks about Ebola , terrorism and challenging negative media perceptions about Africa. Singer Angelique Kidjo is a symbol of Africa's creativity , energy and beauty . Her music is a unique blend of her own very West African heritage combined with funk, jazz and Latin music, and much more . From the small country of Benin , she has won awards and recognition around the world . But Kidjo is also a champion of African causes . Through her work with the United Nations and her own foundation, she has travelled across the continent , raising money at times of disaster . But above all else, she has campaigned for the right of more girls to go to school. And with Africa facing new challenges - from Ebola to extremists opposed to girls' education - she is vocal in her criticism of Western depictions of the continent . " Do you think everybody in Africa has Ebola ?" she asks on Talk to Al Jazeera. "We didn' t invent Ebola . It 's just a disease that exists there. Like, are we going to be blamed for inventing malaria too? If there is an Ebola outbreak in the Western world , will the media in the West treat it the same way?" She also expressed her frustration with the way Western media portray Africa as a continent steeped in violence , victimhood and corruption. " A success story in Africa doesn' t interest any media, " she says. "They are so eager and hungry for horrible stories from Africa. Why? It looks like the West is the hyena , feeding on the misery of the African people . They should be ashamed doing this ." On the topic of terrorism , she is crushing in her criticism of ISIL but urges an analysis of why young people are joining the group. " Everybody wants to fight ISIS. Why can ' t we just do something better for people and remove the legitimacy of all those crazy extremists that are there just for the pleasure of killing people and for power?" she asks . Now in her mid - 50's , Kidjo has just written her life story , Spirit Rising, and released a new album, Eve . She is still recording and touring at a hectic pace , but where does she see her musical career going from here? And with all the challenges facing Africa, does she feel optimistic about the future of her beloved continent ? Angelique Kidjo talks to Al Jazeera. |
Three Bangalore based engineering students, Yashas C Shekar, Vijaykumar Umaluti and Sandesh E, have launched FreeKall , a free voice calling service for those who do not have any internet access. FreeKall makes money by making people listen to advertisements during calls . So once two users are connected, they will be able to hear 10 second advertisements after every two minutes in the middle of the call. Freekall has tied up with a media agency called Streetsmart Media Solutions for the advertisements. To make a FreeKall users have to dial the numbers 080-67683693 or 080-67683693 and the call will be disconnected after a ring. After that, the automated system calls the user back and asks them to dial the desired number and get connected. The system can currently support 20,000 calls per second. FreeKall is currently in Beta as of now and so far it has already been used to make nearly four lakh (400,000) calls so far. Registered users can make 12 minute calls in 24 hours and un-registered users can make calls for upto three minutes. Once the service goes live, registered users will be able to make unlimited calls. The company is aiming for nearly 10 million calls a day after getting the necessary legal clearances and expects revenue of nearly $30 million at the end of the next fiscal year. “The response has been phenomenal. Our servers crashed about seven times and we had to bring it back up,” said Yashas Shekar, the 23-year-old who co-founded the company with college-mates Vijayakumar Umaluti and Sandesh Eshwarappa. “On the flip side Sandesh, and Vijayakumar have not slept since Saturday, ” chuckled Shekar. Recently an Indian student had developed a prototype of a computer system that uses a microchip, embedded with an operating system. It allows the system to work on both Windows and Linux-based software simultaneously. The system is called Revo Book and runs on an operating system called ReVo IX. |

VirtaCoin is Live VirtaPay has now been converted into a crypto-currency, like bitcoin. The new system, called VirtaCoin, will completely replace the old VirtaPay. All user balances have been successfully transferred into the new system. Please be advised that – in order to fit within the parameters of the new system – all user balances have been adjusted to 14% of their original size. This is equivalent to a stock split. For example: If you previously had a balance of VP$100, your new balance would be 14 VTA (virtacoin). Because this adjustment was performed equally to all users, your balance did not lose any actual value. In order to claim your balance, it is critical that you follow the steps below. VirtaCoin Belongs to You VirtaCoin is "owned" by everyone who holds the currency. It is up to the VirtaCoin community to collectively contribute and make VirtaCoin what you want it to be. How you contribute depends on your skills, abilities and available time. Please consider helping in one or more of the following areas... Forums – VirtaCoin needs places for the community to gather and discuss issues and ideas. You could set up a forum, become a moderator, or even just contribute your ideas and opinions on a VirtaCoin community forum. Exchanges – If you would like to exchange your VirtaCoin for bitcoin, for other crypto-currencies, or even for fiat currency, please contact crypto-currency exchanges and follow their procedures to ask them to list VirtaCoin. Solo Mining – To earn more VirtaCoin and contribute computing power to securing the VirtaCoin network, you can try solo mining. Mining Pools – If you have the knowledge, you can create a mining pool. This helps large groups of people to work together and share in the mining rewards, while helping to secure the VirtaCoin network. Developers – If you are a programmer, or know someone who is, you can help to maintain and improve VirtaCoin by working on the open source VirtaCoin Project on GitHub. Configuration Settings You may use the settings below in your virtacoin.conf file. You may also use the port numbers listed to configure mining software, firewall port forwarding, etc. |
If you’ve ever thought of getting some permanent ink on your body but you’ve always been afraid of the needle or how it would look like, you can try out this new “tattoo” created by VivaInk that will do more than just decorate your hand or arm. It is actually an NFC enabled sticker that will bypass your security features and unlock your Moto X . This was actually part of an idea that the people over at the ATAP division of Motorola were working on, even after the sale of the OEM to Lenovo. The concept of digital tattoos is to not just decorate but to turn a body into an "authentication token” so that there is no need to enter your passcode when you want to use your phone. The concept is simple: you just stick the tattoo on any part of your body and then tap your Moto X to unlock it. While the sticker with its copper-coin design looks cool and all, it is not permanent of course. It is water-resistant though and so you can really stick it anywhere in your body (preferably somewhere you can reach because you need to tap your phone after all) and even if you take a bath or wash your hands, it will still be there. Well, at least for a week. You can buy the “tattoos” in packs of ten for about $9.99. Of course, it only works with the Moto X for now, but who knows, if it catches on, we might see a deluge of stickers for other phones, with even bolder designs, just like real tattoos.
