Our local brands- Innjoo I was present at the event when Innjoo launched the Innjoo Halo and the Innjoo Fire Plus. Beautiful devices. I could swear that these guys said the phones came with Android Lollipop. It was also displayed on the presented slides, both for the Halo and Fire Plus. Later when we finally laid hands on the phone. I opened the box, lo and behold , I was seeing stock Kit-Kat. Shocked, I asked the rep why, and he replied the phone actually comes with KitKat. Also saying that an update will be available in the future? When? |
The fast pace with which new inventions happen these days has grown from interesting to scary. Really. This trend covers almost every aspect of tech. Company product launches, app updates, software upgrades, new gadgets, chips etc. They don’t live up to all the hype, and sadly, we see many promises left unfulfilled. I’m beginning to sense that manufacturers just rush to get the latest thing out there. Just for the sake of it. (and maybe the money). They no longer sit to really test out all the kinks. Gone are the days when updates or upgrades bring wholesome changes. Creators no longer look into details to ensure what they’re pushing out is truly worth it. The big question is: The new Tech-Rush is it a blessing or a curse? I think it’s more of a curse and to drive this point home, I’ll give instances where foreign brands got it wrong, before streaming down to the local brands we know. The case of OnePlus We know OnePlus as a brand that just started few years ago. Last year, they launched their first phone, the OnePlus One which enjoyed moderate success. Due to lack of funds, they sell devices only through an invite system. They quickly followed this up with the OnePlus 2. Good device no doubt. But then, they left fans frustrated. A phone launched and claimed to be available; 3 months in, and people are still waiting to buy it. This led to their CEO issuing a public apology for delayed shipments. What’s all the rush? Why not sit down and work things out before pushing out your products. I hope they don’t repeat same with their newly released OnePlusX. |

Please everyone. I have a Blackberry Q5 that is nuts. It charges and stops at 60% and can't go any further unless you switch it off before it can charge full. The problem with switching it off is that it wipes after every boot up. Everything go just wipe and starts afresh. The notification light is always blinking. I upgraded to the latest version of 10.3.2 thinking the problem will be solved, yet it persists. Abeg, any other ideas? |

Within the past two or three years, we have seen tremendous changes in the smartphone industry. Manufactures ramp up specifications, sometime beating what we have on our laptops. Innovations are happening at breath taking speeds, new phones are launched almost daily, and the competition is cutthroat. User needs have also evolved with the trend - they're smarter now. What started with buying whatever is thrown into the market, has evolved to people going for "better value for money". In this dispensation, mid-range phones are kings and the reasons for this are not far fetched. First of all, they're cheaper. Secondly, they're performers too. Why buy the expensive flagships when another phone for less than half the price would also meet your needs. Manufacturers on their part are constantly breaking the barriers between flagship and mid-range smartphones (Moto X Style and OnePlus One rings a bell). In fact, the barrier is getting thinner by the day. With this boom of value-for-money smartphones, there's something we've overlooked. Who is powering this trend? Who is behind this revolution? I've got one answer for you. MediaTek. Ever since this company came into existence, they have caused a kind of disrupt in the smartphone industry. This was achieved by introducing cheaper processors in the market. Snapdragon had it all before, but MediaTek came fighting from the bottom upwards. The company has constantly evolved and keep improving their chips such that they can rival the more expensive chips from Qualcomm (on some fronts). That you use an affordable smartphone today, you owe big thanks to MediaTek. Remember the days Nokia used to cut our necks  MediaTek is growing and pushing the boundaries towards better performing affordable smartphones. Top manufacturers aren't ignoring them too. We've seen the likes of LG, HTC, Sony, and the rest using chips made by them to manufacture lower priced smartphones. The company has also penetrated the smartwatch market, already they're powering most of the cheap smartwatches we see now. I won't be surprising to hear that MediaTek is a more profitable firm than most of these phone makers that even use their chips  These guys are working hard in silence and smiling to the bank, while the rest of the tech world overlooks. Let them ride on the success their hard work deserves. Source http://mobilityarena.com/mid-range-smartphones-are-kings-but-theres-something-were-missing/ cc @lalasticlala |

This article was written by Elroy Chibex, and it is meant to address all the common issues with the Infinix Hot 2 (Android One) phone. If you have another (genuine) issue with the phone, please drop your comments. The Infinix Hot 2 is one of the most impressive budget devices we’ve seen in Nigeria for the year 2015. Why so? The phone is an Android One device. This simply means that Google partnered with Infinix to make the phone. Hence, users of this device will receive the latest Android updates as they come, directly from Google. That asides, looking at the spec vs price angle, there are few devices that come close. After going through various complaints from people and threads in Nairaland, I’ve decided to compile the most common issues with the phone and proffer solutions for them. Before we proceed, Here are things you should know: 1.) The Infinix Hot 2 runs stock Android. This is very different from what you see on the regular Android devices you’ve used or seen before. This phone runs raw Android – just the way founding fathers made it to be – without any extra customization. You should have this at the back of your mind. 2.) You need to set up your Gmail account before using this phone. You can’t do much on this phone if you don’t do that immediately after purchase. Simply login (if you already have an account) or create a new one. Now back to the common problems and their solutions. I can’t see a file manger After signing in with your Gmail account, the first thing you need to do is run to Google Play Store, and download a file manager. Es File Explorer is highly recommended. I can’t use a custom song as ringtone When you notice you can’t set a song as ringtone, then next thing is, use your ES File Explorer, navigate to the song you want, and set that as your ringtone. I can’t find any gallery The Infinix Hot 2 actually has a gallery app called Google Photos. Though, I’ll admit, the app looks weird and different from what we’re used to. To fix the problem, run along to Google Play Store and download Quick Pic. It is a lightweight and fast gallery app. Highly recommended. I can’t play videos If you can’t find a good video player on your phone, again Quick Pic is decent. For a more rounded experience, go ahead to Google Play Store and download MX Player. The phone doesn’t have HSDPA So because the phone shows 3G on the network signal bar (instead of H+), you people have concluded the phone doesn’t have HSDPA. If you dig around Setting -> About section, you’ll clearly see where it is shown. The phone has HSDPA. However, if you need to be able to see it reflected as an icon in the status bar, you can still go farther, by rooting, install Xposed Framework and Gravity Box, then set it up to write H+ on the status bar. That’s all for now. The list will be updated as soon as see more issues to be addressed. Source - http://mobilityarena.com/top-5-problems-of-the-infinix-hot-2-and-their-solutions/ |

This article was written by Elroy Chibex TECNO has just launched a new flagship device for 2015 – the TECNO Phantom 5. The MobilityArena.com team was present at the launch event and enjoyed all its glitz and glamour. We already had a unit of this phone even before the launch event, so we got to play with it and discovered what an amazing device it was upfront. Going through Nairaland and other Nigerian forums, you will see and hear people voicing their various concerns. A TECNO phone for N70,000? Why would you or should you buy a TECNO phone for such a huge price? This is a reply for all those complaining. I don’t have my allegiance sworn to TECNO or any other brand. Rather, as a more privileged observer these are my thoughts. TECNO as we know it in the Nigerian market pride themselves as makers of value for money smartphones. Over the years they have done well in that aspect and provide Nigerians with affordable smartphones. In fact to be honest, TECNO has contributed to bringing the internet to many Nigerians. So, people associate TECNO with cheap devices for the mid and lower class people that can afford it. I remember 2013 when TECNO launched their first flagship, TECNO Phantom A. People cried wolf, but those that bought it bought it. Next was the even more expensive Phantom Z. Some people even wailed louder, and myself and many others still bought it. Now we have a much better smartphone and people are still wailing. Again, I believe that people will still buy. People understand value and the Phantom 5 is great value. Devices in its class cost N20,000 more than it does, so it still follows TECNO’s mantra of providing value-for-money smartphones. Looking at all the cries, complaints and criticisms. I came to two huge conclusions: The people that are crying do so because they have not held used or even touched this phone They cry foul because this is a TECNO Like I said earlier, we already had this device even before it was launched. Mr.Mo is currently playing with his as I type this article. We all at MobilityArena.com were amazed at the phone. The design and finishing, music quality both on earphone and external speakers – all superb. Trust me: this phone is miles apart from the TECNO phones you used to know. We were greatly impressed by what we saw, and we think it is worth its price. Brand perception is one of the major things TECNO now has to tackle. People are resistant to change, and as TECNO wants to change their perception, many people are yet to come to terms with doling out that kind of cash for a TECNO device. People are complaining because it is a TECNO. If it were a Sony, HTC, LG, or even a Xiaomi, we would all be cool with it. But note that the devices from those manufacturers in this class cost much more than the Phantom Z does. There is the value. There are two advice I have for TECNO: They should do more of marketing and put more effort to change that perceptions Nigerians have of them. They should try as much as possible to provide a software update for their phones, especially fr a flagship device like the Phantom 5. That will go a long way in attracting the techies who are the most vocal users. It would indeed be a sad plight to buy this phone and not get any software update. If TECNO can do more to market themselves as premium maker (while their younger brother Infinix focuses on mid-low end devices), then assure us of a software update even if its just a single one to Marshmallow, then they have just completed the package. Please before further criticism, first have a feel of this phone, compare its price with the price of its direct competitors, then come back and let’s talk. The Infinix Hot 2 is a device that has gained lot’s of (international) recognition, far more than its peers and predecessors. This was championed by the partnership between Google and Infinix to launch this device as part of the former’s Android One project in Africa. This is practically the more affordable version of the ever elusive Nexus phone. We’ve been clamoring for this in this part of the world. The launch brought lots of excitement, but does it end there? Compared to other devices within this price range, the Infinix Hot 2 already is champ on paper. How does this reflect in reality? How successful was this marriage between Infinix and Google? This and more we shall access, and like I promised, well do proper justice to this phone review.
