Hi folks,I just stumbled on a topic I discussed with a few people some years back, and thought it'd be a nice idea to get more people to share their thoughts on this. Now,I'm not claiming to be right here;I'm just stating my personal view on this subject. We can all look at it together and see if we can make any sense together. Why do we pronounce the word "champagne" as "shampayne" or "shampain"? The word "CHAMPAGNE" is probably being pronounced wrongly as "SHAM-PAIN" or "SHAM-PAYNE" and i can explain: In oral english,we were taught certain diphtongs and pronounciations & it goes thus: ch: (pronounced as chi). eg: cheap, chip, cheat, chief, chef, chop, etc sh: (pronounced as shi). eg: sheet, ship, sheep, shop, shot, short, etc th: (pronounced as fe). eg: think(fink),thank(fenk),etc. when you break CHAMPAGNE into two syllables, you get "cham"-"pagne". The cham should be pronounced like the cham in champion. The pagne should be pronounced as "pag-ne". or better still,we could have champ-agne as in agnes. It's either we pronounce it like this or we respell it as champayne or champain. Pronouncing it as "shampayne" or "shampain" might just be wrong. Note that "pag" elsewhere in English language is pronounced as "parj"(when spelt) e.g: pageantry. Do you think English language is totally not correct at times, and that they'd need to review the spelling & pronounciation of certain words. What's your thought on this? Cc:lalasticlala |
Now,note that the bone of contention here,is how the two words are pronounced when broken into two syllables. |

Only freecocoa,naff24 and 1 or 2 other ladies here, are making sense. Yes,the OP has no right to decide if the girl should be sent packing;that's her hubby's cross to carry but I think his observations should be a source of concern to any reasonable person. The fact that the hubby to be is not around, has contributed to all these. If he was around to experience the whole scenario,I'm sure he'd have called the girl aside quietly to advice her and lead her on how to act around the family. The OP isn't asking that the girl should become a maid. What stops her from driving with her baby and coming to say hello to the MIL after hearing that the woman has been discharged from the hospital? The fact that the DIL has never cooked for the MIL,should be a source of concern to all. Nobody is asking for a maid role from the DIL;those lil things we do from time to time, are the things that make people see us as caring. Let's even forget about the OP,the fact that the MIL shares same views with the OP,should call for concern. If the DIL has sense, she would have been the one to call hubby and suggest that they get a maid for mama. That would be seen as caring. Even if she can't do these things, she should be the one making arrangements for these things to be done. Abi,dem dey require power to use brain and make phone calls again? In all of these,I see a lady who is definitely not wise and lacks wisdom;not necessarily a bad human being. |

Nice job. How much does it cost to make one of this? I'd like to have one for my mum and one for myself. ayodejiayeola: |
