Pirates attack 2 vessels on Lagos waters News Dec 22, 2010 BARELY three months of relative peace, sea robbers struck twice last week on Lagos waters, attacking two ships, injuring crew and carting away valuables. Although details of the attacks were not revealed to our correspondent, it was confirmed that in one of the attacks four foreign crew members were brutally attacked as about eight robbers armed with crowbars, machetes and guns fired upon and boarded a general cargo ship (identity unknown) that was drifting off about 30 nautical miles off the Lagos Fairway Buoy. The robbers reportedly escaped with ship and crew members cash and property. The attack in which four crew were injured was unleashed on a cargo vessel which was destined for Apapa port of Lagos. It took place on Tuesday December 14. In the second attack, which also occurred about 25 nautical miles of Lagos, it was the dexterity and bravery of the ship’s captain that saved the day as the robbers could not board the ship, despite their spirited attempts. According to the International Maritime Bureau, IMB, piracy reporting centre in Kuala Lumpur, “a suspicious vessel approached a drifting container ship. At a distance of 2.1 nm the vessel stopped and launched a skiff with seven armed pirates. The skiff chased and fired upon the ship with intent to board.” The report which was accessed last week by our correspondent the ship’s “Master raised alarm, increased speed and crew activated fire hoses, smoke signals and fired rocket flares at the skiff. “The pirates made several attempts to board the ship and finally aborted the attack due to the effective anti-piracy measures taken by the ship including rigging of razor wires and electric fence.” Both incidents were (unlike in previous attacks) reported to the IMB immediately. They were both recorded as attacks 423 and 427, respectively. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/12/pirates-attack-2-vessels-on-lagos-waters/ |

Aggrieved aspirants poised to dump Bayelsa PDP News Dec 22, 2010 By Samuel Oyadongha Yenagoa—The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Bayelsa State, may be heading for fresh crisis, following the decision of some of its key governorship aspirants to leave the party over allegations of fraud in the ongoing screening exercise. Prominent among the aspirants said to have opted out of the party were the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Timi Alaibe, Dr. Imoro Kubor, a retired Federal Permanent Secretary. But the secretary of the PDP in the state, Chief James Angaye, yesterday, said the party has not been formally informed of the intention of Alaibe and Kubor to abandon the party and will not stop anyone interested in seeking political interest in another party in 2011. A spokesman for the Alaibe campaign organisation, and House of Assembly aspirant, Mr. Akininika Richard, said the Alaibe group had decided to leave the PDP after the events that characterised the screening exercise. According to him, the decision to leave the PDP was taken after an elaborate meeting, Tuesday night. “A list of 24 aspirants from the governor has been sent to Abuja and the governor directed that everybody should be disqualified. We are leaving the party to pursue our aspirations elsewhere. We are not participating in their primaries. “We are going to the Labour Party to achieve our course. The screening was marred by irregularities. Aspirants’ documents were conspicuously missing during the screening. We are feeling politically unsafe in the state right now, in fact the new slogan is No to Sylva in Bayelsa State,” he said. When contacted the Bayelsa State Secretary of the PDP, Chief James Angaye denied knowledge of the claim of possible exit of Timi Alaibe and some others from the party describing it mere “rumour.” “We are not aware of any of such moves and if such move takes place, the party can’t force anyone against his will to leave. We have always insisted that we will provide a level playing field for all aspirants in the state,” he said. Also, Dr. Imoro Kubor, a retired Permanent Secretary, has since moved to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) where his supporters were visibly noticed at the just concluded state congress. The aviation expert, who midwife the National Directorate of Employment under the military rule had in the past complained about the absence of internal democracy within the PDP and non_availability of level playing ground for governorship aspirants in the state PDP. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/12/aggrieved-aspirants-poised-to-dump-bayelsa-pdp/ |
Ileke-IdI:He could go either way, ACN or APGA.I doubt ANPP. I'm assuming you thought he was igbo and thats why you said APGA.He is an Ijaw man. |

Ex-militants attack Amnesty Office in Abuja News Dec 23, 2010 By Emma Ujah, Abuja Bureau Chief ABUJA — A group of young men numbering about 60 that claimed to be ex-militants from Bayelsa State, yesterday, attacked the Abuja headquarters of the Presidential Amnesty Office. According to the group, it was protesting their non-inclusion in the benefits of the amnesty programme, especially the N65,000 stipend and feeding allowance paid to their colleagues on a monthly basis. The attackers who damaged the gate of the premises and disputed activities in the amnesty office, were part of the last group of 6,600 ex-militants who got presidential approval only last month to be included in the programme, more than one year after the expiration of October 4, 2009 deadline for them to surrender. But in a swift reaction, Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Chief Executive Officer of the Amnesty Programme, Mr. Timi Alaibe, denounced the use of violence by the men whom he alleged were being used by politicians to discredit President Goodluck Jonathan and the programme. Alaibe said since the inclusion of the group, his office had been working hard to ensure they benefitted from the programme and that indeed arrangement had been put in place for a decentralised payment of the stipend in all the states of the region. He explained that the payment commenced on Tuesday but that rather than patiently waiting to collect their allowances in their state, the group attacked his office on the pretext of protesting non-inclusion in the programme. His words: “Given that proper bank accounts are yet to be opened for these new entrants, the Amnesty Office working closely with the Joint Military Task Force, JTF, arranged for the payments to be done directly to the 6,166 ex-militants in pay-parade format at designated locations and this arrangement was promptly communicated to the leaders of the ex-militants who excitedly welcomed it. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/12/ex-militants-attack-amnesty-office-in-abuja/ |

Alaibe, others to dump PDP? Written by Soji Ajibola, Yenagoa Thursday, 23 December 2010 The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Matters, Mr Timi Alaibe and other governorship aspirants in Bayelsa State were said to be considering the option of leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) switch over to other political parties based on the alleged irregularities in the ongoing screening exercise in the state. The screening exercise started few hours behind schedule on Tuesday, as document containing the list of aspirants was said to be missing from the party secretariat in Abuja. Condemning the procedure, a spokesman for Timi Alaibe campaign organisation and House of Assembly aspirant, Mr Akininika Richard, said the screening exercise did not follow due process. He alleged that the screening exercise has been hijacked by the party leadership in the state, adding that a list of 24 aspirants was forwarded to Abuja for ratification. Richard said: “We are leaving the party to pursue our aspirations elsewhere. We are not participating in their primaries. We are going to the Labour Party to achieve our cause. The screening was marred by irregularities.” However, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Eni Ketebu, said the hitch that caused the delay on the first day had been resolved, adding that the screening was going on smoothly. On the threat by some aspirants to leave the party, Ketebu said anybody was free to leave the party if such a person discovered that he/she was not popular to take part in the internal democratic process of the party. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/15152-alaibe-others-to-dump-pdp |
Nigerian Army, NNPC pledge partnership on pipeline security Thursday, 23 December 2010 The Nigerian Army and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) have pledged to collaborate to bring to an end the incessant vandalism of petroleum products pipelines across the country, especially in the Niger Delta region. The Group Managing Director of the Corporation, Mr Austen Oniwon, noted with dismay that the recurring damage of oil pipelines by vandals had impacted negatively on the operations of the country’s refineries. Oniwon stated this, on Tuesday, when he led top management of the NNPC to pay a courtesy visit on the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Azubuike Ihejirika, at the Nigerian Army headquarters in Abuja. He implored the Chief of Army Staff to particularly deploy his men to step up surveillance on the crude pipeline from Bonny to Port Harcourt refinery and the Escravos pipeline to Warri and Kaduna refinery, saying that the refineries had been shut down temporarily because all the pipelines had been severed. “The rate of the crude pipeline vandalisation from Bonny to Port Harcourt refinery and the Escravos to Warri and Kaduna refinery is alarming and I wish to request the Army to concentrate on these pipelines as they are critical to our operations,” Oniwon stated. The GMD further sued for more collaboration with the Army in the area of engineering and applauded the Army for maintaining a high standard of work in some of the contracts it was handling for the corporation. The NNPC helmsman reiterated the commitment of the corporation to the existing mutual relationship between the NNPC and the Army and asserted that the relationship would help the duo to meet its primary obligations to the country. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/15140-nigerian-army-nnpc-pledge-partnership-on-pipeline-security |
