What is plagiarism?

There is an argument along that line on a thread in the front page and from there i was able to deduce that people have different opinions on what constitutes plagiarism, some people do not know what it is exactly and how serious an offense it is.
Plagiarism, to me, means taking someone else's work(s) and passing them as though it is/ they are yours.
So if you know well , what you please do well to explain what constitutes plagiarism.

this is clearly a fiction, i had to comment because of some comments i read above applauding the police man. If such situation happens and the police wants to ascertain the true maternity of the baby, the best he can do is to ask any woman around to help check. Which audacity does a police man have to ask a woman to bring out her breast because he wants to ascertain if the baby is truly hers? There are police women to do that or simply ask any woman around
