Fears are growing that the most lethal form of the Ebola virus can mutate into an airborne pathogen, making the spread of the terrifying disease more difficult to check. It was previously thought the untreatable virus, which causes massive internal bleeding and multiple organ failure, could only be transmitted through contact with infected blood. But now Canadian researchers have carried out experiments showing how monkeys can catch the deadly disease from infected pigs without coming into direct contact. Kent Brantly is in isolation and receiving treatment, North Carolina-based Samaritan’s Purse said. Brantly, a doctor, is the medical director of the aid charity’s Ebola center in Monrovia, Liberia’s capital. Nancy Writebol, who works for the manager of the hospital treating people with the virus in the country, has tested positive for Ebola, the charity said on its website yesterday. Ebola, which has no known cure or treatment and leads to death in as many as 90 percent of those who get it, has killed more than 660 people in four West African nations since March, the worst episode of the virus since it was first reported in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976. Liberia shut all minor border crossings to contain the virus, AllAfrica.com reported, citing a government statement. The current outbreak may last for another three months, according to the World Health Organization. |
Update, one which many will say has been long overdue: Liberia Shuts Border Crossings to Slow Ebola Spread. From Bloomberg: Only major border crossings at Roberts International Airport, James Spriggs Payne Airport, Foya Crossing, Bo Waterside Crossing, Ganta Crossing to remain open, AllAfrica.com says, citing Liberian govt statement. At those entry points, testing centers to be set up; “stringent” preventive measures to be announced New travel policy by Liberia Airport Authority on inspection, testing of all passengers to be strictly observed There will be restrictions on public gatherings incl. solidarity marches, demonstrations Hotels, restaurants, entertainment centers, video clubs to play 5-min. film on Ebola awareness, prevention Govt vehicles to be commandeered, as needed, to support health delivery system All govt facilities, public places to install/provide public access for hand-washing * * * It was a few short hours ago when we reported that as part of the escalating Ebola epidemic in West Africa a US doctor, Kent Brantly had himself succumbed to the deadly virus. Moments ago we found out that a second US doctor from the same aid organization in Liberia, Nancy Writebol, has been infected with Ebola. |
MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) — One of Liberia's most high-profile doctors has died of Ebola, a government official said Sunday, as an American doctor was treated in the West African country after contracting the disease, highlighting the risks facing health workers trying to combat the spread of the deadly virus. Dr. Samuel Brisbane is the first Liberian doctor to die in an outbreak the World Health Organization says has killed 129 people in Liberia, and more than 670 in several West African countries. A Ugandan doctor working in the country died earlier this month. The WHO says the outbreak, the largest ever recorded, has also killed 319 people in Guinea and 224 in Sierra Leone. As of July 23, the total number of cases in the three countries was 1,201, it said. In Nigeria, officials announced on Friday that a Liberian official died of Ebola after flying from Monrovia to Lagos via Lome, Togo. The case underscored the difficulty of preventing Ebola victims from traveling given weak screening systems and the fact that the initial symptoms of the disease — including fever and sore throat — resemble many other illnesses. Health workers are at serious risk of contracting the disease, which spreads through contact with bodily fluids. Dr. Kent Brantly, an American helping respond to the outbreak in Liberia, is receiving intensive medical treatment there after he was infected with the deadly Ebola virus, a spokeswoman for aid organization Samaritan's Purse said. Brantly was in stable condition, talking with his doctors and working on his computer while receiving care, she said. http://news.yahoo.com/official-ebola-kills-senior-doctor-liberia-094351470.html |
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/us-doctor-infected-ebola-liberia-outbreak/ WASHINGTON (AFP) – An American doctor battling West Africa’s Ebola epidemic has himself fallen sick with the disease in Liberia, his aid agency said. Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian charity, said Dr Kent Brantly had been isolated at the group’s Ebola treatment center at the ELWA hospital in the Liberian capital Monrovia. “Dr Brantly is married with two children,” the group said, in a statement posted to its website on Saturday. “Samaritan’s Purse is committed to doing everything possible to help Dr Brantly during this time of crisis. We ask everyone to please pray for him and his family.” - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/us-doctor-infected-ebola-liberia-outbreak/#sthash.5kPOuLIk.dpuf |
It continues to go from bad to worse for Africa's "deadliest ever" Ebola epidemic which has officially claimed well over 600 lives, and unofficially many more. Following the death of a Liberian government worker two days ago who collapsed in the international airport of Nigeria's 20-million megacity, Lagos which resulted in a "red alert" Nigeria clamping down into a quasi-quarantine state, sending specialists to airports and seaports fo containment, overnight we got an update on the other major Ebola story from last week, namely the female patient whose family broke her out of a hospital in Sierra Leone's capital Freetown, and who had been on the loose of several days, leading to a nationwide hunt. She has passed away, dying in an ambulance on the way to hospital, Reuters reports. Amadu Sisi, a senior doctor at King Harman hospital in the capital Freetown, from which the patient was taken, said on Saturday that police found her in the house of a healer. Her family refused to hand her over and a struggle ensued with police, who finally retrieved her and sent her to hospital, he said. "She died in the ambulance on the way to another hospital," Sisi said. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-07-27/runaway-ebola-infected-woman-dies-us-doctor-tests-positive-virus |

Eyewitnesses said there was an exchange of fire between soldiers and members of the Sect from Friday afternoon, till the early hours of Saturday, resulting in the death of at least 35 sect members and the arrest of many others. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/35-feared-killed-shiites-members-soldiers-clash-zaria/#sthash.S93uh0k1.dpuf |
The military has not commented on the killings. Defence spokesperson, Chris Olukolade did not respond to repeated requests for comment on Friday and Saturday. Casualty figure Mahmud Ibrahim Zakzaky Mr. Zakzaky said the casualty figure from the alleged attack has continued to grow. “Yesterday we had a total of 16 corpses, while the soldiers took 9 corpses with them to the Teaching Hospital apart from my two children,” he said. “This morning as they were passing in front of Husainiyyah, they decided to shoot, and kill 3 more people and wounded many. We also learnt that they have taken with them two more corpses this morning. “This means, today there is additional five corpses, making a total of 35 people that were killed,” he said. He said they have 19 corpses with them and the rest are still with the Soldiers. - See more at: http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/165627-zakzaky-speaks-my-sons-were-taken-alive-then-summarily-executed-by-soldiers.html#sthash.8kRLfWnd.dpuf |
http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/165627-zakzaky-speaks-my-sons-were-taken-alive-then-summarily-executed-by-soldiers.html#sthash.8kRLfWnd.dpbs The fiery preacher says soldiers were on instructions to execute his sons. The leader of the Islamic Brotherhood in Nigeria, Ibrahim Zakzaky, has accused the Nigerian military of summarily executing two of his sons after their arrests, in addition to a third son killed earlier, allegedly by soldiers. The alleged attack occurred during a procession by Shiite Muslims in Zaria Friday. Speaking at a news conference Saturday, Mr. Zakzaky said there were no clashes between Shiite Muslims and soldiers as earlier reported, but that troops opened fire on the worshippers during an annual Qud procession in solidarity with Palestinians. “During the shooting they have killed and wounded a lot of people, including children and women. It was during that shooting that one of my sons, Mahmud, a student of Almustapha International University in Beirut, was shot. He came home for holiday at the beginning of this Ramadan. He was shot at his abdomen. He was brought here bleeding, they wanted to take him to the hospital, but the soldiers had blocked the way. He therefore bled to death on the road (to the hospital),” Mr. Zakzaky narrated. - See more at: http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/165627-zakzaky-speaks-my-sons-were-taken-alive-then-summarily-executed-by-soldiers.html#sthash.8kRLfWnd.dpuf |
He arrived on a flight from Monrovia. How does the Nigerian government figure he was only exposed to medical workers? Was he the only passenger on that flight? That's exactly that kind of statement by any government that makes people see all governments as just a bunch of liars. I'll bet the government reps are getting their own families out of Lagos, right now all the while saying that everything is ok. |
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/body-ebola-victim-cremated-lagos/ The body of the first victim of Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria, who died in Lagos on Friday, has been cremated. Details of the cremation were not available at press time but Sunday Vanguard gathered that the eveny was witnessed by officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, led by its Project Director, Professor Abdulsalam Nasidi, among others. The decision to cremate the body of the victim, it was further gathered, may not be unconnected with the deadly nature of the Ebola Virus which is known to be easily transmissible from human to human during handling of corpses. |

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-07-26/following-first-ebola-death-nigeria-red-alert-deploys-specialists-airports-contaimen Shortly after our report yesterday that the Liberian man suspected of carrying the Ebola virus has died while quarantined in Nigeria, the local health ministry confirmed that he was indeed the first confirmed Ebola death in the Nigerian city of Lagos, which with a population of roughly 20 million, is the largest city in Africa and the fourth largest in the world. The victim, who worked for the Liberian government, collapsed at Lagos international airport after arriving on a flight from Monrovia via the Togolese capital Lome on Tuesday, according to the Nigerian government. And now the "red alert" scramble begins in Nigeria, with a population fo 170 million, to isolate who else the deceased may have come in contact with. |
Reported by Reuters, they could be more Liberians transmitting Ebola as speak on our shores |
http://www.punchng.com/news/report-on-legislators-jumbo-pay-sparks-anger/ The jumbo salary being paid the country’s legislators, which ranked the highest in the world, according to a new study, has attracted sharp criticisms from Nigerians across the country, including economists and lawyers. A report by The Economist magazine revealed that Nigerian federal legislators with a basic salary of $189,500 per annum (N30.6m) were the highest paid lawmakers in the world. Quoting data from the International Monetary Fund and The Economist magazine of London, the study looked at the lawmakers’ basic salary as a ratio of the Gross Domestic Product per person across countries of the world. |
Whether you are ready or not, these technologies are coming. For now, they are voluntary. But eventually a day may come when you will be required to have an “identity chip” in order to buy, sell, conduct banking, have a job or go to the hospital. When that day arrives, what will you do? |
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-07-20/economist-touts-cyberdream-global-national-id-system Would you like to have a digital identity card that is automatically issued to you at birth? In one European nation, residents use such a card when they go to the hospital, when they do their banking, when they go shopping and even when they vote. This card has become so popular that this particular European country actually plans to start issuing them to millions of non-citizens all over the planet who request them. Never heard about this? Neither had I before this week. The Economist is calling for the entire planet to adopt this “national identification system” that the little nation of Estonia has adopted. The Economist is touting all of the “benefits” of a “national identification card”, but are there dangers as well? Could adopting such a system potentially open the door for greater government tyranny than we have ever known before? The Economist article about this national identification scheme went largely unnoticed because it had a very boring title: “Estonia takes the plunge“. But the content of the article is absolutely startling. The Economist article calls the Estonian national identification system a “cyberdream” and makes it sound like it will solve all of our problems… |
I hope Dangote and Otedola wont be posing with these very soon |
With all the money in Niger Delta, some big boy politicians and militants should start acquiring these vehicles |

The aircraft, which other sources said was a Boeing 777 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, came down near the city of Donetsk, stronghold of pro-Russian rebels, Anton Gerashchenko said, adding that it was hit by a ground-to-air missile. There was no further confirmation of the report, although Ukrainian officials said local residents had found wreckage. Malaysia Airlines said on its Twitter feed it had lost contact with its flight MH-17 from Amsterdam. "The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace," it said. Gerashchenko was quoted as saying: "A civilian airliner travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has just been shot down by a Buk anti-aircraft system ... 280 passengers and 15 crew have been killed." |

A complete, turnkey Panther sells for a cool $155,000; a $126,000 "turnkey minus" model allows buyers to install the engine of their choice (provided said engine is a 3.5- or 3.7-litre Honda V6). Selby says WaterCar has sold close to 100 Panthers so far, with customers ranging from Middle Eastern sheiks to Silicon Valley titans. |
http://www.bbc.com/autos/story/20140715-meet-the-sport-utility-vessel “Once you enter the water, you put the transmission in neutral, pull a knob to engage the jet, push a button to raise the wheels and off you go,” he explains. “Then you just reverse the process when exiting the water.” Power comes from a Honda-sourced 3.7-litre V6 engine (the same one used in the last-generation Acura MDX sport-utility vehicle) matched to a four-speed manual transmission. On water, aided by hydraulically powered retractable wheels and a moulded fibreglass hull (the fruit of more than 100 test designs), the engine enables the 15-foot-long, 2,950-pound Panther to max out at a more-than-respectable 44mph. On terra firma, the craft will hit 100mph (though the company cautions that speeds above 55mph are not advisable). Selby says the Panther, which is capable of carrying about 700 pounds, is unsinkable, thanks to a hull cavity filled with 32 cubic feet of closed-cell foam. |
With the amount of ethnicity and tribalism I read here on Nairaland mostly by youths who did not experience the hardship of the civil war and are thus meant to be free of resentment due to genocide; it is almost certain that a far worse RWANDA GENOCIDE is going to befall Nigeria. This has being made possible by politicians killing our educational system thus producing half baked hate filled unemployed youths browsing the net and a lack of free state citizenship based on where you are born and where you work not where your folks are from which would have fostered National integration and unity. For the elite a word of advice is to quickly make escape plans to avoid the oncoming carnage. The sad thing is that after the masses have finished killing themselves, the elite will still return to continue ruling e.g . Liberia and Afghanistan. So please keep on all your Igbo/ Yoruba bashing and help to depopulate Nigeria which is really a ticking population time bomb anyway. |
