On the eve of the coup, we went for a coordinating conference, all the boys were alerted. The conference had current NSA, Col Dasuki, Col Gwadabe among other officers to coordinate the last minute of the take-over. Gen. Abacha was to join us later but he failed to appear. An officer asked me which appointment I would like to take in the new government. I replied, ‘Which government? I was told that Abacha had decided to take over power for six months before handing over to Abiola. I told them that was a very dangerous development and that I would not partake in such a plan.

We reached a deadlock and I decided to go and confront Gen. Abacha. Around nine in the night, I went to Abacha’s house and I met him alone. I asked him why he changed the plan. I told him that the only reason I joined in the plot was to hand over to Abiola immediately. I told him that I knew that any coup against Babangida was like a suicide mission but I decided to join even at the cost of my life because I wanted Nigerians to know I was not part of the annulment that would plunge the country into crisis. I told him we should continue with our earlier plan. He said the problem was that Abiola could not control the country with all the problems. I told him that whatever happened I would not partake in a coup that would bring him to power.

While I was talking with him, Gen. Ahmed Abdulahi appeared. I told him that I was out of the plan. I left and radioed all those we put on the standby and told them that the coup plan had been terminated, that we were not going to continue. I told senior officers that Abacha was only trying to hoodwink us.

When that plot failed, Abacha and some other officers convinced IBB to step aside but that he should leave some trusted officers, to work with an interim government to stabilise the polity. That way, the coast was left free for Abacha to have his way.

The election was held, we realised Abiola was going to win, I dashed to Abuja, met with the chairman of the electoral commission. He told me he had received 22 states and it looked like Abiola was coasting home to victory. I pleaded with him to ensure that he announced the results. Abacha invited me. He told me that IBB would not allow the results to be announced.

He said we should go ahead, topple him and hand over to the winner. He sent me on a wild goose chase; he said I should get the army boys ready for any eventuality. Of course, I went round the country, we got our boys ready. What was agreed was that the person that would announce the overthrow of Babangida would announce the result of the elections and hand over to the winner. We got all the boys in all the regional headquarters ready. Abacha said he was going to call the GOCs to let them know that the military had decided to let the winner of the June 12 to take over.

About two weeks to the election, IBB called to say that some military boys were putting pressure on him not to hand over because the Structural Adjustment Programme had not achieved results and Nigeria was in a precarious situation.

In the meantime, Abacha was saying if IBB did not hand over after the June 12 election, we should move against him, topple him and hand over to whoever wins the election.

When I was appointed a military governor in 1985 by the Ibrahim Babangida administration, he told me that if I found anything wrong, I should not hesitate to let him know. So, when he announced the transition-to-civil rule programme, I counselled that he should ensure that the date he fixed was sacrosanct, the date should not be changed under any circumstance. Soon after the announcement in January 1986, things started unfolding. To cut the long story short, by 1992, the primaries were about to be annulled, I wrote a letter to IBB that the election was losing credibility, that there was the need to hurry up and handover.

By December 1992, at the Chief of Army Staff Conference, I raised the issue under other matters that since we were being embarrassed, there was the need to conclude the transition programme. Gen. Sani Abacha asked me to see him in his house. I went to Abacha’s house in company of the current National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki. What General Abacha told me then was that they were all eager to see that power was handed over to civilian administration but it looked like IBB was dilly-dallying, that he didn’t want to go. But what I discovered later was that that was not correct.

Anyway, we moved to the June 12 election. When the primaries of the two parties(National Republican Convention and Social Democratic Party) that was created by IBB held, and Moshood Abiola and Bashir Tofa emerged candidates, I kept putting pressure on IBB to conclude the transition and hand over but Abacha kept telling me that IBB was not committed to the election and that we should keep putting pressure on him. I kept going to IBB and he kept assuring me he was on course.

The link between casual sex and mental health was found to be the same for both men and women according to the study published in the Journal of Sex Research.

Dr Claire Kamp Dush, professor of human sciences at Ohio State University, said: "That was unexpected because there is still this sexual double standard in society that says it is OK for men to have casual sexual relationships, but it is not OK for women.

"But these results suggest that poor mental health and casual sex are linked, whether you're a man or a woman."

Researchers found that each additional casual sexual relationship increased the odds of suicidal thoughts by 18 percent.

However they also found that although casual sex was linked to suicidal thoughts, it did not have any effect on depressive symptoms.

It is thought that this may be because depressive symptoms fluctuate during adolescence and it is hard to capture an accurate reading when it is only measured twice.

For decades, hydrogen fuel cell cars have been the automotive technology of tomorrow: the big idea, for someday far in the future.

No longer. At auto shows in Los Angeles and Tokyo this week, Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and Hyundai Motor Co. will introduce hydrogen-powered cars. Hyundai's will reach U.S. showrooms next year, while the other models will begin selling a year later.

It amounts to "a coming out party for hydrogen," said John Krafcik, chief executive of Hyundai Motor America.

Toyota's car, being unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show, "has the same potential as the first Prius," said Bill Fay, general manager of Toyota's U.S. sales arm. Fuel cell offerings from the two other automakers will debut in L.A.


In a little more than a decade, the Prius has become America's favorite hybrid and California's bestselling vehicle.

The global automakers believe cars powered by fuel cells represent the best path to building the zero-emission vehicles now demanded by regulators in California and many other states and, increasingly, by consumers. Using hydrogen to create electricity, fuel cells combine the best of electric and gasoline cars without the downsides, the automakers say. They drive like electric cars — quietly, with tons of off-the-line power — but can be refueled just like gasoline-powered cars.

"Hydrogen vehicles allow you to be lean and green with the same range as an internal combustion engine," said Thilo Koslowski, an analyst at Gartner Inc.

The challenge: Producing them cheaply enough to entice consumers and building enough hydrogen fueling stations to keep them on the road. Initially, the cars are expected to cost more than comparable gasoline-powered and electric vehicles, though they probably will qualify for government incentives to buyers. The sticker prices are expected to come down if automakers can sell the cars in volume.

None of the automakers have revealed prices yet. The cars are likely to be offered first as three-year leases.

THE police on Sunday in Kaduna handed over a 63-year-old French man, Francis Collomp, who escaped from terrorists’ den to officials of the French embassy. in Kaduna.

Collomp’s abductors were suspected to be members of the Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Bilads-Sudan.

He was seized in Rimi town of Katsina State 11 months ago.

The foreigner, an engineer with a French renewable energy firm, Vergnet company of France, was on a routine official assignment when he was kidnapped.

Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Olufemi Adenaike, who presented Collomp to journalists at the police headquarters on Sunday said, “The man escaped from the kidnappers yesterday (Saturday) through the bush at Dan Magaji village in Zaria, Kaduna State. He saw an Okada man (commercial motorcyclists) and told him to take him to the nearest police station. This is how far I can go for security reasons.”

The CP, who handed him over to French embassy officials who came to the command headquarters in Kaduna, said arrangements had been concluded to fly the man back to France on Monday (today).

He further explained that the kidnappers took the French national to Kano where he spent nine months before taking him back to Zaria where he spent another two months before his escape yesterday.

A Nigerian Police commissioner, Olufemi Adenaike, said yesterday that Mr Collomp had been moved by his captors to Zaria three months ago. “He escaped yesterday and boarded a commercial motorcycle taxi to the nearest police station,” Mr Adenaike said. “We handed him over to the French embassy this morning.”

French diplomatic sources said the escape occurred during a Nigerian army raid. Boko Haram, the Islamist fundamentalist movement based in northern Nigeria, claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of a French priest, father Georges Vandenbeusch, in Cameroon last Wednesday.

A French engineer held hostage by Islamist extremists in northern Nigeria made a daring escape on a motorcycle taxi at the weekend while his captors were being attacked by the Nigerian army.

Francis Collomp, 63, is expected to return to Paris today after fleeing his kidnappers in Zaria, in northern Nigeria, on Saturday.

Mr Collomp, who was seized by an islamist group linked to Boko Haram last December, discovered that his room was unlocked while his captors were under siege by Nigerian soldiers. He ran into the street, flagged down a passing motorcycle taxi and asked to be taken to the nearest police station.

President Francois Hollande, who spoke to Mr Collomp in the police station by telephone, confirmed the scape during a visit to Israel. “We are very happy for him,” Mr Hollande said. “But we do not forget that we have (seven) other hostages around the world.”

The French foreign minister, Laurent Fabius, flew to Nigeria yesterday to bring Mr Collomp home. The engineer was kidnapped on his birthday, 19 December last year, when 30 men attacked his home in northern Nigeria, killing a security guard and a neighbour.

The Toyota FCV isn't the only fuel-cell car headed to market

The Toyota FCV Concept is just one of several fuel-cell cars coming to market in the next few years. Hyundai (NASDAQOTH: HYMTF ) has said that it will bring a fuel-cell-powered SUV to the U.S. market in 2015. That's not a token gesture — Hyundai hopes to sell 10,000 a year.

Meanwhile, Ford (NYSE: F ) is working with Nissan and Daimler (NASDAQOTH: DDAIF ) , the corporate parent of Mercedes-Benz, on a project that will bring fuel cell cars to market by 2017, they say. The three are sharing development costs in hopes of designing better technology more quickly.

Likewise, General Motors (NYSE: GM ) and Honda (NYSE: HMC ) are teaming up on a fuel-cell design of their own. Most other big automakers are doing similar work, or are expected to follow suit.

But will these fuel cell cars really replace hybrids and battery-electrics — not to mention the gasoline-powered cars that most of us drive, that still seem to get better every year?

Are fuel cell cars really the future?
It's hard to say, and these companies are all hedging their bets. Even as they work on fuel cell cars, Toyota and Ford (and most of the others) are investing big in better hybrids, and continuing work on battery-electric cars, and developing ever-more-efficient gasoline engines, too.

Tesla Motors has gone all-in on batteries, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made it clear that he thinks fuel cells are not a serious solution. But big automakers like Toyota and its peers aren't convinced, as their big investments in fuel cell cars like the FCV show.

It stated, “Instances show that sales between the NNPC and its two Swiss partners were carried out at prices lower than the market rate. This type of operation appears incongruous: Why would the NNPC sell its crude oil at a discount?

“In reality, the profit generated by these entities escapes state coffers, first, because no taxation in Bermuda is paid, since the tax on profits is zero.

“Vitol and Trafigura alone took respectively 13.44 per cent and 13.49 per cent of Nigerian crude oil exports in 2011 for a cumulative value of $6.8bn.”

The report further stated that more than 56 per cent of the oil put up for sale by the NNPC in 2011 valued at $14.004bn was sold to Swiss companies or Nigerian companies with “letterbox” subsidiaries in Switzerland.

The NNPC was also alleged to be taking advantage of the country’s failed refineries to feed its partnership with the oil dealers.

The refineries have been operating sub-optimally, but the report found that NNPC had been allocating crude to them as if they were operating at full capacity.

The excess allocations, according to the report, are sold to Swiss-based oil trading companies or local oil marketers through their fraudulent subsidiaries in Switzerland at lower prices or exchanged for refined petroleum products in shady swap contracts.

The report said, “Nigeria is the only major producing country that sells 100 per cent of its crude to private traders rather than market it itself and benefit from the resulting added value. A number of beneficiaries of export allocations are nothing but letterbox companies, whose sole merit is that they are linked to high-ranking political officials or their entourage.”

The Berne Declaration described the Nigerian oil scam as the greatest fraud Africa had ever known.

A Swiss-based non-governmental advocacy group, Berne Declaration, in a report entitled, ‘Swiss traders’ opaque deals in Nigeria’, accused the NNPC of robbing the country of several billions of dollars in connivance with major oil trading companies based in the European nation.

Specifically, the report indicted Vitol and Trafigura, two major oil traders in Switzerland, and seven Nigerian oil importers of creating offshore subsidiaries referred to as ‘letterbox companies’ to defraud the country of over $6.8bn in subsidy payments between 2009 and 2011.

This, according to the report, is coupled with other activities such as ship-to-ship transfer to create untraceable paperwork, payment of subsidy money to non-existing importers, and partnering with politically exposed fraudsters.

The Berne Declaration said in a news release detailing its report, “Every year, the Nigerian state coffers lose billions of dollars as large volumes of oil are exported for well below the market price, and the subsidy scheme for imports of refined crude oil products is systematically defrauded.

“Ongoing investigations by the Nigerian authorities show that those Swiss traders dominant in oil exports have been making good business with dubious Nigerian import firms.”

The report, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday, stated, “The all-powerful national company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, categorised as the most opaque national oil company on the planet, itself is evidence of Nigeria’s ‘resource curse’ at work.

“The extent of the problem is illustrated by the fact that the NNPC has not published detailed financial reports since 2005! But this company, with its dozen subsidiaries operating at all levels of the supply chain, from production to distribution, cannot be ignored by anyone wanting to produce, export or import crude oil or petroleum products in Nigeria. It is here that Swiss commodity traders occupy a position of choice.”

The report alleged that NNPC was involved in shady deals with two Geneva-based commodity trading firms registered in Bermuda.

It said Vitol and Trafigura had “exclusive and un-transparent partnerships” with the NNPC, which had given them over 26 per cent of the market share.

Thus, if Tesla wants to continue production at its current rate and work to meet its aggressive long-term goals, it will need to come up with a new supply source.

As of now, Musk has plans to sell 20,000 Model S sedans globally by the end of 2013, but the CEO wants to double that sales target to 40,000 by 2014. The ambition reflects good news for auto buyers who are anxious to get their hands on the new iconic vehicles, but it also paints a problematic forecast for the lithium-ion battery supply that is already being expended by not only Tesla, but also other tech companies which use them in their computers and cell phones.

A new hypersonic spy plane, capable of flying up to six times faster than the speed of sound, is being developed by aerospace giant Lockheed Martin Corp., according to company officials.

The new aircraft, known as the SR-72, is the unmanned successor to Lockheed's SR-71 Blackbird, a twin-engine, two-seater, supersonic aircraft that was developed in the 1960s. The company's new spy plane will be able to fly twice as fast as the Blackbird and three times faster than current fighter jets, accelerating to Mach 6, which is six times the speed of sound, or more than 3,500 mph (5,600 km/h).
