I don't think Japan will go nuclear - I think they'll have a conventional dust-up with China to rally the tribe to sacrifice their saved wealth. Of course, once that kind of thing starts there's no predicting where it ends.

I'm short the yen - like everyone else - which scares me a lot. I hate being in the pack becaue I feel like I'm headed for slaughter - but there's nothing else to do. They have to crush the yen.

There are 2 simple problems:

- our economic cycle was always based on boom/bust model where we didn't destroy everything gained in the boom phase during the bust. But bust means war. And we can't have war anymore; that's why Bass will keep looking at his peace time debt levels chart and wonder another 100 years how it's possible...

The model doesn't work anymore. Either come up with a new model, or... self-service around for decades while losing much more in the bust phase than was gained in the boom. Having an obsolete system always helped; not.

- productivity is too high; either reduce hours worked/day drastically or accept high unemployment rates and redistribution. The problem with reducing work time is, like in free floating currencies, that there's always an idiot country who think they're smarter and try to game the system...

Federal and State governments yesterday defended their requests for approval to borrow over $7.9 billion at the Senate.

Out of the amount, the Federal Government is seeking Senate’s nod to borrow $4,846.3 billion while some state governments applied for approval for a loan of $3,059.39 billion.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Senator Ehigie Uzamere, explained that the purpose of the loan defence was to know the amount federal and state governments applied to borrow.

Uzamere also said that his committee wanted to ensure that the loans were tied to specific projects.

Meanwhile, shale gas production in the U.S. has rocketed from virtually nothing to 20 per cent of its gas supply in less than a decade. As a result, the price of gas in the U.S. has collapsed from $12 per thousand cubic feet in 2007 to around $3 today. Currently, known shale gas reserves alone will supply the U.S. with more than 100 years of gas at today’s consumption levels. Over the past couple of years, huge shale reserves have been identified throughout Europe, Latin America and Asia, too. In Europe, the chances of finding shale gas are, from a geological perspective, as good as in the U.S.

Until now, the West has been heavily dependent for its supplies of oil and gas on an unstable Middle East and an unreliable Russia. Crucially, all that has changed because gas and oil-bearing shale is scattered throughout the world — including in Britain. 



America is already the world’s largest natural gas producer, and it is estimated that, by 2035, almost 90 per cent of Middle East oil and gas exports will go to Asia, with the U.S. importing virtually none.

For decades, the West in general, and the U.S. in particular, has had to shape, and sometimes arguably to misshape, its foreign policy in the light of its dependence on Middle East oil and gas. No longer: that era is now over.

For decades, too, Europe has been fearful of the threat that Russia might cut off the gas supplies on which it has relied so heavily.

No longer: that era will very soon be over, too. Thanks to the shale gas revolution, the newfound energy independence of the West is a beneficent game-changer in terms of world politics as much as it is in the field of energy economics.
