Politics / What I Told President Buhari — Hilary Adike, 1985 Golden Eaglet by clara472: 12:22pm On Jan 30, 2016
Despite showing gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for remembering to honour the class of 1985 members of the Nigerian U-16 team that won the first edition of the FIFA cadet championship held in China, a member of the group, Hilary Adike has vowed never to allow any of his children to play football for the country.
Adike who was among the players who got the sum of N2 million from the federal government more than 30 years after they put the name of the country on the world map said it was unfortunate that it only took the return of Buhari to power for them to be rewarded even after other compatriots who achieved the same feat much more later were adequately rewarded by the same nation. He spoke to Correspondent Jude Opara. Excerpts.

How do you feel being rewarded by Nigeria after such a long time?
Well, it is good that we are being rewarded today more than 30 years after we won the first edition of the FIFA cadet championship. At least we are now happy as citizens because after 30 years it was like nobody recognized our efforts in bringing glory to the nation. Buhari has returned somehow, by an act of God, to do this. So, we give kudos to him. However, I will say that my heart bleeds because way back in 1985, I remember that the Saudi Arabian team was promised $1 million dollars if they won that world cup and we won it. Yes, I know that Nigeria is not as rich as Saudi Arabia but then we were trying to look for a path to glory but Nigeria stopped us.

How do you mean?
Yes we were termed government property, that we should not go out, that the country was going to look after us to the extent that whatever school we wanted to go to, we would go, that what ever thing we wanted to achieve in life that they would take care of us. The euphoria made them promise heaven on earth. But they abandoned us to the extent that I was on my way to Italy to play football with three of my colleagues, we were arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos and told that we could not leave this country because we were Nigerian property. I think that their plan was to keep us, continue to train us and see us graduate to the Super Eagles. But restricting us to the country was a bad approach. We were restrained from going to make a good life for ourselves. Then after 30 years, we are being given N2 million.

But successive governments ignored you till today
(cuts in) Yes, yes, I agree and that is why I said that we are very grateful to Mr. President for remembering that. But then, my heart bleeds because these Golden Eaglets(Emmanuel Amuneke’s current squad) and the subsequent ones after our time, they were all allowed to go out and play, make good money and improve on their lives, why were we restrained?

But some of your colleagues like Jonathan Akpborie still went out to play professional football?
Yes, yes now you are talking, let me tell you something, about five years ago if you had wanted to buy a player like Mario Ballitoli you would pay high, but today will you pay such a high amount of money for him? No, so it is always a good thing when you are still hot. We were not allowed to leave immediately after our victory when the opportunities were many. At the the particular point in time when we were hot we were restrained from getting something as hotcakes. So over time we were forgotten. In my own case I got injured, I had problem with my knees so I couldn’t make any progress in my professional career. Had it been I was allowed to travel then, I know what I would have achieved with my life.

So presently what are you doing?
Right now, I am lecturing in a school in Port Harcourt. Thank God that he gave me brain to go to school and further my education, got my Masters and all that so I lecture in a school and that is what has been putting food on my table.

So will you still encourage any of your children to play football?
Definitely I will encourage them but not in this country, I will take them abroad to play football

Why?
Because they recognize talents over there, whatever you do in developed counties you are recognised based on your capacity. Talent pays. Here it’s like they look at certain talents and say these ones are not important, like it is for fun and that is the reason my colleagues used to call me ‘professor’ because my father never joked with education. They used to look at me as somebody who was brainy who should not play football, as if it should be only for the dropouts and the dullards. I had passion for football. Let me tell you the truth, there was a time I failed my exams and my dad put all my football kits together and burnt them all and warned that if I failed my exams again I would be in trouble and would finally stop playing football. I had to sit up and had good results again. The next day he replaced all my football kits and that was how I realised that education is the key.

Then why are you still talking like you are unhappy?
Yes I was able to make something out of my life through education, but what of my other colleagues? Today it looks as if education is no longer the key because you can do other things and make money, good for them, they are enjoying it but we were not that lucky. We were treated like guinea pigs. We set the pace. Who ever believed that Africans could so play football this good if not for my set?

Finally, what is your message about President Buhari?
Actually, he is doing a good job and all Nigerians must support him. When a nation is in this situation that we are, we must have to sacrifice for us to get to the level he wants to take us to. So for that he has done okay, I say God bless him. In fact when I shook his hands I said ‘Mr. President God bless you’. God should really bless him. I think this is my quota to the sacrifice to take Nigeria where she ought to be but if we don’t get there, my heart will continue to bleed.

Politics / Robbery Gang Write Lagos Communities Ahead Of Revenge Attack (READ) by clara472: 4:21pm On Jan 29, 2016
Residents of the Ojo and Badagary local government areas have been thrown into a state of utter panic following the letter recently addressed to them by a feared and notorious robbery gang in Lagos known as the One Million Boys.

According to PM News, the residents revealed that a letter was written by the gang of robbers after four of their members were arrested in a recent robbery that left many residents of the neighborhood injured while many lost valuables worth million.

Apparently, the gang are planning a revenge attack as the letter reportedly informed the residents of the community of their impending visit while they warned them to keep money at home in anticipation of them, or be ready to die.

The residents of the area have resorted to keeping vigils in anticipation of the coming robbers.

P.M NEWS gathered that at least 100 members of the gang had recently attacked the neighborhood in the operation that saw 4 of their members arrested.

Some of the areas attacked include Ojo, Iba, Shibiri, Agbara, Afromedia, Okokomaiko, Ijanikin and other areas located in Ojo and Badagry local government areas.

According to eyewitness accounts, during the recent raids, residents who did not have money or valuables to give to them, were attacked with machetes.

While the operation ensued, it was reported that women were not spared in the brutality of the robbers as some of them were raped while others were asked to have sex with their blood relatives.

The youths of the communities, who could not take the reign of terror of the robbers anymore mobilized themselves and caught four of the robbers, eventually handing them over to the police at Ajangbadi division while the rest escaped.

Politics / ‘amaechi Left Most Abandoned Projects In The History Of Rivers State’ – Wike by clara472: 1:02pm On Jan 29, 2016
The governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has called on the former governor of the state, who is now the minister for transport, Rotimi Amaechi to account for an estimated N3 trillion he received throughout his eight years as governor.

The state government’s position was made by the commissioner for Information, Tam George in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

The commissioner said that the state was still grappling with “the catastrophic legacy of the former governor” despite receiving over three trillion naira in revenue in 8 years.

“Amaechi left the most abandoned projects in the history of Rivers State since 1997. Thousands of workers were without their salaries for four months and thousands of teachers were not paid for nearly 12 months. We have so many abandoned projects which huge sums have been paid but projects are yet to be completed.

“We have the Mono-rail project that gulped over N60bn and it was abandoned. We have the Woji road project awarded at N3bn. There was a variation of the project to the upward of N14bn but it was abandoned. We inherited the project and completed it.

“There are so many of the abandoned projects. We have the Karibi George 250 bed project where huge sums of money were paid but no single block was laid at the site” he said.

Romance / 62-year-old Grandmother Speaks About Being Porn Star[video] by clara472: 1:30am On Jan 27, 2016
A porn star pensioner has gone public and confessed to her revealing and shocking antics without any shame.

62-year-old Siobhan, who was speaking on the British Jeremy Kyle TV Show, said she found a spring in her step since discovering swinging through a dating site.

She admitted she only started having sex at 57, but has since bedded more than 100 men, saying: “You’re never to old to go swinging and do *****.”

When she was asked how old the youngest man she’d ever slept with was, she replied he was just 23-years-old.

“He said ‘That was great when can we do it again?” And we made a video of it.”

Siobhan – who has never married or had children, so isn’t technically a grandmother – admitted she then began to go on websites where her fans paid for her to strip.

A clip showed Siobhan talking through her box of tricks, as a shocked audience looked on while she described her favourite toys to use on her clients.

The host of the TV show laughed as he revealed that the show had booked the pensioner into a Manchester hotel and then she promptly invited a man who wanted to pay her for sex.

Siobhan has no plans to abandon her sinful ways
Siobhan said she didn’t get paid and the two didn’t have full sex insisting: “We didn’t actually do the full thing. We got as far as a medium inspection.”

He client later told the show’s host: “She says she normally has breakfast, lunch and tea and last night she had a late supper.”

She said her naughty behaviour would never come to an end declaring: “I’ll do it when I’m a hundred!”

We can only hope that Siobhan comes to her senses soon!

Politics / Alamieyeseigha To Be Buried March 26 by clara472: 9:15pm On Jan 26, 2016
The burial ceremony of the late former Governor of Bayelsa State,, will commence on March 24 and end on March 26, a family source said on Tuesday.

The Nation gathered that Alamieyeseigha would have been buried on November 16 last year, the day he would have marked his 63 birthday.

But it was reportedly put off because of preparations for the state governorship election and lack of agreement between the state government and the deceased’s family.

The silence over his burial had led to speculations especially outside the Niger Delta region that Alamieyeseigha’s death might have been faked to stop his extradition to Britain on corruption charges.

But Major Graham Naingba (rtd), the first cousin of the deceased and Traditional Ruler of Amassoma, Alamieyeseigha’s community in Southern Ijaw local government area of the state, said the death was not faked.

Graham, who spoke on Tuesday when our correspondent visited his palace in Amassoma, said it was an abomination in Ogboin community, comprising Amassoma, Amatolu and Otuan, for anybody to fake his death.

Naingba noted that though the chiefs in the community were yet to see the remains of the late former governor, some members of the family were present when he died.

He said: “Alamieyeseigha is truly dead. I have heard people who claimed that he faked his death. It is not true. In Ogboin community, we don’t fake our death.

“If anybody claims that he is dead and he eventually comes back, the person cannot live for more than three months. It is our tradition. If you fake your death, you are gone because you cannot live again.

“Even if the whole world says he is not dead, I the traditional ruler of this community will tell you that he is dead.”

Politics / Hoodlums Slaughter 23-year-old, Ask Residents Not To Panic by clara472: 4:51pm On Jan 26, 2016
Some hoodlums have invaded Iya Agan Street on Old Apapa Road in the Ebute-Meta area of Lagos State, killing a 23-year-old, identified only as Dada.

The hoodlums, who wielded guns and cutlasses, asked residents not to panic while they slaughtered Dada, alias Ratio, saying they (hoodlums) did not come for innocent lives.

The 23-year-old, whose family members or address, had yet to be known, was killed around 5.30pm on Friday in the area.

It was learnt that anxious residents, however, contacted the vigilance group in the area, which in turn contacted the Iponri Police Division.

It was gathered that when policemen arrived at the scene, Dada’s corpse was recovered, but the hoodlums had fled.

When PUNCH Metro got to the street on Monday, some of the residents said they wanted to flee when they heard the gunshots, but the hoodlums calmed them down, saying they only trailed a rival member to the area, and they had no plan to unleash terror on anyone.

A shop owner, who gave his name only as Abimbola, said the attackers came in two tricycles, otherwise known as Keke Marwa.

He said, the gunshots did not have effect, they slaughtered him with a cutlass.”

A resident, who declined to mention her name, said Dada was known to be moving with the Fagbayimu Boys, adding that rival hoodlums, trailed him to the area.

She said, “Those hoodlums had come on Tuesday to attack a shop owner and collected his phones and money. So, when we saw them again on Friday, we were afraid. But they said they knew the person they were looking for.

“Minutes later, they found Dada and started shooting at him. There was a man who came to repair his car at a mechanic workshop at that time, he left his car and climbed a fence in fear. But the hoodlums continued to assure

people around the scene that they should not run.

“ I do not know the deceased’s family members, but he was usually seen with the Fagabayimu Boys. When we told the man on the fence that the hoodlums had gone and he should come down, he refused.”

One of the executives of the vigilance group, Mr. Ishola Agbodemu, said one of the hoodlums, identified only as Ayo, was caught on Saturday and handed over to the Anti-Robbery Section of the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba.

He said, “The hoodlums wanted to start reprisals in our area, but we brought out vigilance group members to apprehend them. On Saturday, one of the suspects, Ayo, was caught with weapons. They were actually three, but we caught one of them.

“He is at the SDCI, and the police are interrogating him.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the killing.

She added that investigation was ongoing into the incident.

Culture / Profile Of The Next Olubadan by clara472: 5:00pm On Jan 24, 2016
IT is not a life of royalty that has never known hardship. His is far from having two distinct parts with a common feature of ease. One spent in childhood shielded from the vagaries of growing up. The other of opulence as a king. For as a young man, Chief Saliu Akanmu Olatunpo Adetunji encountered the challenges of life.

He was once a tailor. Adetunji who was recently promoted to the exalted position of the Balogun of Ibadan land, by the late Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade, is next in line to be crowned Olubadan, the traditional ruler of the ancient city, of Ibadan.

The former Balogun, Adetunji, who had been involved in creative endeavours all his life was a tailor by training and practice, around the Agarawu area of Lagos Island. He was also a musical record merchant and later founded and managed his own record label.

The incoming Olubadan, who jumped the queue in the line of succession to the throne due to the demise of the Otun Balogun of the land,

Chief Sulaimon Adegboyega Omiyale, was versed in the making of both native and English dresses until when he met the late Badejo Okunsanya, the scion of a record label owner and veered into the music industry, marketing of records produced by his customers and later founded his first record label, Baba Laje Records in 1960. Thus ended his tailoring profession as he stepped into alluring and flamboyant music industry.

He later founded and became the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of a conglomerate of three music marketing companies with subsidiaries known as Omo Aje Sound Studio, Adetunji Label . The Olubadan-to-be is well known for his humility, a trait that turned his life around for the better.

Being a managing director and big boss notwithstanding, he was known to execute his customers’ orders to the letter.Another trait that put him in good stead and which set him apart from others, was his entrepreneurial spirit which propelled him out of the lowly placed tailoring vocation and turned him into one of the biggest record label owners in the South-West of Nigeria.

In an interview he granted last year, he narrated how he benefitted from his initiative and quick thinking.“A record seller had given me some records to play so as to entertain my customers when they came to sew or pick up clothes I had sewn for them. But to my surprise, rather than listening and enjoying the records, many of those customers were more interested in buying the records from me.

“I sold everything and took the money back to the man who supplied me the records. That was in 1960. The man then revealed to me that he and my dad had been in business together in 1940 and thereafter took me to other record marketers. That was how I started,” he narrated.

Chief Adetunji was later to be known as the man behind the discovery and success of popular leading Fuji star West, Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, and before him, the likes of Salami Balogun, Alhaji Amoda Shijuade, Daudu Epo Akara, Saka Olayigbade, and many more.

The system that would see Chief Adetunji as the next Olubadan is not hereditary, but rather a graduated system in which descendants of certain households graduate through 21 stages to mount the throne of the ancient city.

In promoting the incoming Olubadan, his predecessor had a brush with the state governor, Abiola Ajimobi, when in defiance of the directive of the Oyo State Government that all high chiefs wanting to be promoted and installed by the Olubadan should surrender themselves to security check and a medical report, the late Oba Odulana Odugade, late last year, installed nine chiefs to fill the vacancies in the Olubadan-in-Council.

Those installed included the former governor of the state, Rashidi Ladoja, as Osi Olubadan of Ibadan; Chief Saliu A.O. Adetunji as the new Balogun of Ibadan land; Chief Lekan Balogun as the Otun Olubadan; Chief Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin as Otun Balogun and Chief Olufemi Olaifa as Osi Balogun of Ibadan land.

He also elevated Chief Eddy Oyewole to the rank of the Ashipa Olubadan; High Chief Tajudeen Abimbola as Ashipa Balogun; High Chief Kola Daisi as the Ekerin Olubadan and High Chief Solomon A. Adabale as the Ekerin Balogun.

Two high-ranking chiefs, the Balogun Olubadan of Ibadan and Otun Olubadan, Chief Sulaimon Adegboyega Omiyale and Chief Omowale Kuye had died shortly before the exercise in November, last year.

When asked, the Olubadan explained that the presentation of health certificate as pre-requisite for promotion of chiefs in the Olubadan lines was alien to the culture and tradition of the town.

A full-blown conflict was, however, averted when some prominent indigenes of the city waded into the matter and settled it without further acrimony.

Ajimobi retraced his steps and softened the state government’s earlier hard stance, by allowing the elevated chiefs to maintain the status quo, while the chiefs also made some concessions, by agreeing to follow procedures as laid down by the state government.

Politics / Fear Grips Polytechnic As Dead Students Write Semester Examinations by clara472: 4:04pm On Jun 06, 2015
A rights group, International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, has raised an alarm that some dead students the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, were awarded grades in a recent semester examination in the institution. The group alleged that one of the deceased students awarded marks included Late Ezeh Uchenna with registration number FPO/SLT/ND/R1/012/038, who was given upper credit (3.05).

In a petition signed by the Chairman of the group’s Board of Trustees, Mr. Emeka Umeagbalasi, the board wonderd why some students were being victimized over its petition. The group lamented that till date no reasonable investigation over the students’ complaints have been commenced and concluded by the school authorities over the matter. The group said that the assertion of the students that the lecturers that handled the referenced courses and exams should be compelled to tender their raw result score sheets for the purpose of verification should be commended and heeded.

Politics / Although I Dropped Out Of School And Got Lucky...- Bill Gates by clara472: 9:31pm On Jun 03, 2015
American business magnate and philanthropist, Bill Gates, said although he was a school dropout and he got lucky, getting a degree is a much surer path to success. Forbes Magazine had earlier this year named Bill Gates the richest man of the year for the 16th time. Gates wrote on his blog that college graduates are more likely to find a rewarding job, earn higher income, and even, evidence shows, live healthier lives than those who don’t have degrees.

Gates added that many of those who drop out of school are poor and often the first person in their families to attend college. He said a high percentage of those who don’t finish college are from low-income backgrounds should be a concern for all of us adding that without degrees, they are more likely to stay trapped in poverty.

Politics / Federal Lawmakers To Leave With 109 Jeeps, 360 Exotic Cars- THESUMMARY by clara472: 10:45am On Jun 03, 2015
As the 7th Assembly winds down on Friday, Senators and members of the House of Representatives are to leave with the operational vehicles of the National Assembly currently in their possession; vehicles that should have ordinarily been left behind. While each of the 109 senators has a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, commonly referred to as ‘jeep’, assigned to them, each member of the House of Representatives has a 2011 model Toyota Camry the house attached to them for operational duties. Lawmakers who wish to go home with the vehicles would pay only 30 per cent of the purchase price to be deducted from the severance package of the senators and the House members.

According to findings, the outgoing senators would each part with only N2.7m for the jeeps valued at N9m each while the Representatives would each pay only N1.9m for the camry valued at N6.5m.

Politics / 7 Month Salary Arrears, I Am Helpless -aregbesola by clara472: 10:37am On Jun 03, 2015
The Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, on Tuesday said he is helpless over his inability to pay workers in the state for seven months, describing the situation as a painful one. The governor who spoke at the inauguration of the sixth State House of Assembly, however expressed optimism that things would soon change.

Aregbesola also lamented that the inauguration of the house was coming at a time when the State was not financially buoyant and therefore called for the understanding of the lawmakers to surmount the challenge. Civil servants in the state are currently on strike over non-payment of their salaries and the workers have argued that even though allocations are reduced, the state has been receiving allocations over the months.

Politics / Why Aisha Buhari Should Not Be Addressed As "Her Excellecncy" - APC Chieftain by clara472: 2:16pm On Jun 02, 2015
A member of the All Progressives Congress, APC and the senator-elect for Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Alhaji Shehu Sani, has said it is unconstitutional to address Aisha Buhari as "Her excellency" and to squander state resources on her as the office of the First Lady is unconstitutional. The senator elect warned President Muhammadu Buhari against repeating the mistake made by former President Goodluck Jonathan, whose wife lived lavishly while the citizens wasted away.

Sani while speaking at a meeting with the executives of the Kaduna Branch of the Federecion Internationale De Agbogadas said, that president Buhari must set up an economic team comprising academicians and experts and not business men and women that would use the opportunity to better their own business.

Politics / Why I Won't Enter Government House Until September - Rivers State Governor[ts] by clara472: 10:14am On Jun 01, 2015
Governor Nyesom Wike has vowed not to enter the state Government House in Port Harcourt until after the next three months because the properties in the place were vandalised by the immediate past administration. Wike, who spoke at the inauguration thanksgiving service in Port Harcourt, said all the bullet-proof doors, furniture, cars, crested carpets, curtains and windows in the Government House were carted away by the immediate past administration. Wike assured the people of Rivers that he would not disappoint them and the Peoples Democratic Party.

However, the former Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, Chief Tony Okocha, has described Wike’s claim that the facility was vandalised by the Amaechi administration as false saying the property in the State House were intact when former governor, Rotimi Amaechi, left it.
