Education / How UI Student Died - VC by clara472: 9:00pm On May 13, 2015
The Vice-Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Adewole has said, contrary to claims that the death of Mr. Mayowa Alaran, a student of the institution who slumped while watching a football match, was due to inefficiency of the health centre, Mayowa died before he was conveyed to the university health centre. Alaran’s death had last Thursday triggered protests by students of the institution who alleged that inefficiency in the institution’s healthcare system caused his death.

Prof Adewole, while giving a vivid account of Mayowa's death said the deceased showed no vital signs while being moved from the vehicle into the University health centre. The VC further said, the Nurse-on-duty joined by the Doctor on duty promptly attended to the student and observed that vital signs were absent and continued resuscitation efforts. He was later certified dead after there were no signs.

Health / [pic]miracle! Baby Found Alive 8 Days After Buried Alive by clara472: 2:53pm On May 13, 2015
After eight days of being abandoned by his parents in cardboard and subsequently buried alive by relatives who believed he had died, a Chinese baby born with a cleft lip has been rescued alive, media has reported. The report said water and air were able to get into the box.

The baby was discovered by a woman who heard him crying while picking herbs. The baby was spitting soil when he was examined by doctors last week. According to CCTV, five people including three relatives have been detained for attempted murder. Authorities say a disabled child in China is a huge drain on a family's resources as parents cannot afford expensive medical and school fees for special children.

Politics / Civil Servants Beg For Money, Foodstuffs Due To Unpaid Salaries by clara472: 1:36pm On May 12, 2015
Due to the inability of their state governors to pay salaries for months, civil servants in Oyo, Osun, Cross River, Rivers, Abia, Benue, Plateau and Bauchi states have adopted strategies such as begging for money from friends and relatives, securing loans from different sources and doing menial jobs to survive. It was gathered that workers in Oyo State who have not been paid salaries for over three months, now skip their lunch daily, while some reports to duty with garri and groundnut daily to serve as lunch. In Osun State, workers have been forced into fasting while others resort to selling of jewelleries and household appliances. Cross River State is not left out as civil servants there who are owed salaries between two and six months are begging for foodstuffs and getting loans from financial institutions.

Politics / REVEALED! INEC Awarded 5 Times Of Total Accredited Voters To Wike As Valid Votes by clara472: 11:15pm On May 09, 2015
Official documents obtained has revealed that only 292, 878 voters were accredited in the April 11 governorship elections in Rivers State while Wike was declared winner of the election with a total of 1,029,102 votes, representing 87.77 per cent of 1,228,614, conjured number of total accredited voters. It therefore means the Independent National Electoral Commission in Rivers awarded Mr. Wike votes almost five times higher than the actual, authentic total number of voters accredited with card readers and Permanent Voter Cards.

If the five governorship candidates challenging the credibility of the April 11 governorship election in Rivers do not withdraw their cases from the election petition tribunal, Mr. Wike may need a miracle to come out of the election petition tribunal victorious with the available evidences. The Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Kayode Idowu on Friday confirmed that manual accreditation was not used in any state for the April 11 elections.

Politics / PDP Chairman Mocks Fayose Over Buhari's Death Wish Advert by clara472: 11:56pm On May 07, 2015
The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu has taken to his verified twitter account to mock governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state insisting that his death wish advert on president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari made the PDP lose the 2015 Presidential elections.

Fayose had earlier alleged that he has evidence that Mu'azu worked for the All Progressives Congress. Responding, Mu'azu tweeted: "We hope it’s not the kind of evidence he once said he had that Buhari was dying?” The embattled chairman who is being pressured to resign revealed that he urged the campaign team of Jonathan and members of the PDP to desist from hate campaigns but their refusal to heed his advice led to rejection of Jonathan by the Northern electorates. Fayose placed front page adverts on some national dailies attacking Mr. Buhari few weeks to the March 28 presidential elections.

Religion / Israel Displays 2,000-year-old Copy Of Ten Commandments by clara472: 5:51pm On May 07, 2015
An Israeli Museum has for the first time in history featured a 2,000-year-old copy of the Ten Commandments dated between the years 30 B.C. and 1 B.C. The scroll was discovered along with the other Dead Sea Scrolls in the mid-20th century in Khirbet Qumran, an archaeological site near the shores of the Dead Sea where the oldest known versions of the Hebrew Bible was also discovered.

Marking the museum’s 50th anniversary and because of the delicate state of the parchment document, the scroll will be shown for about four weeks, after which the museum will return it to a more protected environment and display a duplicate copy.

Politics / We Have Borrowed N473bn To Pay Salaries, Overheads -okonjo Iweala by clara472: 3:22pm On May 06, 2015
The crash in the price of crude oil over the world has continued to have its effect on the nation's economy just as the Federal Government said over N473 billion, out of N882 billion budgetary borrowing limit, has already been borrowed to make up for the deficit arising from the 50 per cent revenue loss from global oil crisis, barely four months into 2015 fiscal year.

The Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, while giving the breakdown of the budget, yesterday in Abuja said part of the borrowed funds were for salaries and overheads. The minister who claimed to have been honest wih the Nigerian populace since the commencement of the current economic problems, said the problem might likely remain till the end of the year. Okonjo-Iweala also said it is false that provision was not made for fuel subsidy in the 2015 budget.

Health / World's First Malaria Vaccine To Be Administered In Africa by clara472: 10:12pm On Apr 25, 2015
After 30 years of experimentation, world’s first malaria vaccine, produced by GlaxoSmithKline, could be approved by international regulators for use in Africa from October. The final trial data showed that the vaccine, called RTS,S offered partial protection for children for up to four years. It will be the first licensed human vaccine against a parasitic disease, and could help prevent millions of cases of malaria, which currently kills more than 600,000 people a year.

Earlier trial data released in 2011 and 2012 shows falling efficacy over time, in spite of this, “there is still a clear benefit from RTS,S,” said Brian Greenwood, a professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine who worked on the study. He said an average 1,363 cases of clinical malaria were prevented over four years for every 1,000 children vaccinated, or 1,774 cases with a booster shot. Experts say RTS, S will be only one among several weapons against malaria.
