SportsLionel Messi: I'm Staying At Barcelona by clara472(op): 1:46pm On Jan 12, 2015
Barcelona star Lionel Messi insists he is going nowhere, labelling claims he has spoken to Chelsea and Manchester City as "all lies".

The Argentine forward scored the third goal in Barca's 3-1 La Liga victory over Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday.

Post-game, Messi denied he had asked to leave the Catalan giants " and rubbished links to Premier League giants Chelsea and City.

"I haven"t asked for anything to stay here because I have never wanted to go anywhere else," he told Barca TV programme El Marcador.

"I have also heard that I have spoken to Chelsea and [Manchester] City but it"s all lies."

Reports of a rift between Messi and Luis Enrique had spread, with suggestions the Argentina international had asked for the coach's sacking.

Messi denied those claims and suggestions he was behind the departures of previous coaches or players.

"There have stories that I had bad relationships with [Pep] Guardiola, [Samuel] Eto"o, [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic and Bojan [Krkic] that I have got rid of people. That is in no way true," he said.

"I never asked for them to get rid of the coach or anyone else.

"I am tired of hearing things about me. They say that I run the club when I am just another player. I don"t make those decisions, nor have I asked to make them."

PoliticsAddress Injustice In PDP, Not MEND, Group Tells Jonathan by clara472(op): 1:34pm On Jan 12, 2015
Following the endorsement of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, the Niger Delta Youth Parliament on Sunday called on President Goodluck Jonathan to focus on redressing the alarming level of injustice in the Peoples Democratic Party rather than worry about MEND endorsement as it does not reflect the mind of Niger Delta youths.

The National Coordinator of NDYP, Mr. Imoh Okoko, described the continued imposition of candidate on the people by the PDP as unacceptable and detrimental to the fortunes of the party in the forthcoming general election.

Okoko, who explained that MEND the right to endorse any candidate ahead of the presidential poll, maintained that the militant group was not speaking for Niger Delta youths.

He observed that some members of the PDP, who had contributed to the development of the party, were sidelined while those who were strangers to the PDP had been candidates to contest for elective positions.

“MEND has the right to adopt anybody as President. But MEND was not speaking the mind of the youths of Niger Delta when it declared its support for Muhammadu Buhari. The adoption of Buhari for president by MEND should not be a problem to President Jonathan.

“The problem President Jonathan has and should address is the injustice in the PDP. How can the party and Jonathan allow a person that has never supported the party for one day be given the party’s ticket to contest election,” Okoko queried.

The youth leader condemned the use and dump syndrome in the PDP and charged the party to disregard the declaration by sycophants that the party must win the 2015 election.

Okoko specifically recalled that the Niger Delta youths contributed to the election of President Jonathan in 2011, adding that they (youths) have not benefited from the current administration.

He said, “The PDP must stop sidelining its members that have contributed a lot to its growth. The President and the party should stop imposing people who have never supported the PDP for one day as candidate. It can affect the party in the election.

“The unending use and dump style of the PDP is killing the party and not MEND. Let us forget about the sycophants who are saying the party must win. It does not work that way. The youths of Niger Delta who helped in mobilising for President Jonathan to win in 2011 have been forgotten.”

PoliticsWamakko: Only APC Can Rescue Nigeria From Security Challenge by clara472(op): 1:34pm On Jan 11, 2015
Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, on Saturday said only the All Progressives Congress (APC) was capable of salvaging Nigeria from the security challenge and myriad of problems bedevilling it.

Wamakko made the assertion in Sokoto, while addressing party supporters, shortly after his return from Saudi Arabia where he had performed the lesser Hajj. According to him, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led Federal Government had failed in securing the lives of Nigerians.

The governor said Nigerians were in dire need of a people-oriented government that would tackle poverty, insecurity and improve their living conditions.

Wamakko averred that the APC presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has what it takes to rescue Nigeria from the security challenge ravaging it.

“The APC presidential candidate has what it takes and the requisite experience to salvage Nigeria from the security challenge and myriad of problems bedeviling it,” Wamakko said.

The governor maintained that APC was built on the principles of equity and justice and was determined to restore the lost glory of Nigeria, if given the mandate in the forthcoming elections. He urged supporters of the APC in the state to conduct themselves peacefully during the electioneering campaigns.

Wamakko said they could do so by avoiding provocative statements against political opponents during rallies in the state. He therefore, called on the people of the state to vote for the APC at all levels in the forthcoming elections to achieve the desired positive change.

PoliticsBuhari, Jonathan, Condemn Youth Attack On Campaign Bus In Jos by clara472(op): 12:58pm On Jan 11, 2015
Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has issued a statement condemning Saturday’s attack on President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election campaign bus by irate youth in Jos, Plateau State.

Sources familiar with the political developments that led to the destruction of the president’s re-election campaign bus at Zololo junction, Bauchi Road, in Jos, Jos North Local Government area of Plateau State, said the youth were expressing their frustration at the imposition of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in the state, Senator Gyang Pwajok by Governor Jonah Jang. Luckily, the driver of the bus was reported to have escaped unhurt.

But Buhari, who is Jonathan’s main challenger in the February 14, 2015 presidential poll, said he does not accept any supporter who resorts to violence.

‎”I have received news of violence in Jos today. I condemn this violence in its entirety. I reject any supporter who resorts to violence. Like I said after the attack on our supporters in Rivers this week, elections are not war. Electoral violence is unacceptable”, the APC presidential candidate said in a Twitter post.

He also called on the ruling PDP ‎to condemn the attack and sue for peace as the life of every Nigerian citizen is sacred.

“We can and we will bring #Change to Nigeria peacefully. I call on the PDP to join this call for peace. Every Nigerian life is sacred”, he urged. ‎

‎Meanwhile, President Jonathan has condemned what he called the “violent destruction of supporters’ assets”.

00

In a terse statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, while reacting to the destruction of a campaign bus bearing his image and the PDP logo in Jos on Saturday, the president called on his supporters to pursue peace even in the face of provocation.

“On violent destruction of supporters’ assets, President Jonathan calls on his supporters to pursue Peace in the face of undue provocation”, Abati said.

The president reiterated his call for politicians and their supporters to conduct their electoral campaigns with highest possible decorum and civility towards political opponents.

PoliticsNorth Korea Offers U.S. Deal To Halt Nuclear Test by clara472(op): 12:49pm On Jan 11, 2015
SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea said Saturday that it had told the United States that it would impose a temporary moratorium on nuclear tests if Washington canceled its joint annual military exercises with South Korea to help promote dialogue on the divided Korean Peninsula.

The North proposed its “crucial step” in a message it delivered to the United States on Friday through an unspecified channel, the North’s official Korean Central News Agency said. In the past, North Korea has relayed messages to Washington through its United Nations mission in New York.

Until now, the United States has dismissed North Korea’s routine demand for an end to its joint military exercises with South Korea. The North has called them a rehearsal for an invasion while the United States and South Korea have insisted that their annual war games are defensive in nature.

But the North’s latest proposal included a new incentive for Washington, offering to temporarily suspend nuclear tests in return for a suspension of the joint military exercises this year.

The North’s overture followed the New Year’s Day speech of its leader, Kim Jong-un, in which he said he was ready to meet with President Park Geun-hye of South Korea if “the mood was right.” Mr. Kim said the two Koreas should mark their 70th anniversary of liberation from Japanese colonial rule this year with great strides toward inter-Korean reconciliation. North Korea has since significantly toned down its habitually harsh language when referring to South Korea.

The message proposed that the United States “contribute to easing tension on the Korean Peninsula by temporarily suspending joint military exercises in South Korea and its vicinity this year, and said that in this case the D.P.R.K. is ready to take such responsive step as temporarily suspending the nuclear test over which the U.S. is concerned,” the North Korean news agency said Saturday. D.P.R.K. stands for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the North’s official name.

The United States on Saturday rebuffed the North Korean proposal. Jen Psaki, a State Department spokeswoman, said it “inappropriately” linked the “routine” joint military drills “to the possibility of a nuclear test.”

The South Korean government has proposed a dialogue with North Korea to discuss tension-reducing steps, such as reunions of Korean families separated during the 1950-53 Korean War, as well as a possible North-South summit meeting. The North has not responded to the South Korean proposal yet.

North Korea’s overture to Washington came amid tensions between the two governments over a Sony Pictures movie that involved a fictional C.I.A. plot to assassinate Mr. Kim. Washington accused the North of hacking the computer network of the Hollywood studio and imposed new sanctions last month. The North, which denied involvement, has vowed to retaliate.

North Korea has conducted three nuclear tests — in 2006, 2009 and 2013 — prompting a series of United Nations sanctions. A recently published South Korean Defense Ministry analysis said the North had made significant advances toward making its nuclear weapons small enough to fit onto a long-range missile capable of reaching the West Coast of the United States. Experts said the North needed more tests to demonstrate such capabilities.

The United States keeps 28,500 troops in South Korea under a mutual defense treaty, a legacy of the Korean War, when it fought on the South’s side.

On Saturday, North Korea said “there can be neither trust-based dialogue nor détente and stability on the peninsula in such a gruesome atmosphere in which war drills are staged against the dialogue partner.”

The North added that it was ready to discuss its proposal with the United States.

PoliticsKuwait Jails Ex-minister Over Article Criticising Govt by clara472(op): 1:12am On Jan 11, 2015
Kuwait authorities arrested a former liberal cabinet minister as he attempted to leave the country Saturday, after being sentenced to a week in jail over an article criticising the government, his lawyer said.
Saad al-Ajmi, information minister between 1999-2000, was detained at the airport as he, his wife and daughter were trying to leave for a pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, Al-Humaidi al-Subaie said on Twitter.

He said Ajmi, a professor at Kuwait University and contributor to several Gulf newspapers, was sentenced Thursday for an article published by the pro-opposition Al-Aan electronic newsletter about two years ago about alleged government corruption.

The court also passed the same sentence on writer Zayed al-Zaid, who co-owned Al-Aan with Ajmi, on a complaint by Finance Minister Anas al-Saleh, the lawyer said.

There was no immediate report whether Zaid had also been arrested.

The lawyer said the verdicts were issued in absentia and that neither he nor his clients were informed of the case or the ruling.

The verdict was sent for immediate implementation although such a process normally takes several weeks, he said.

Subaie said he plans to challenge the ruling on Sunday.

On Tuesday, authorities arrested former liberal MP Saleh al-Mulla for comments on Twitter deemed offensive to the emir and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who visited Kuwait last week.

Mulla has been in detention since then and is due for trial on Sunday.

Kuwaiti courts have sentenced several opposition activists and former lawmakers for remarks deemed insulting to the emir.

PoliticsCourt Finds Obasanjo Guilty Of Contempt Over Book Launch; To Rule On Punishment by clara472(op): 11:22pm On Dec 10, 2014
An Abuja High Court has found former President Olusegun Obasanjo guilty of contempt, after the former leader defied the court’s directive barring him from releasing his autobiography.

Mr. Obasanjo released the new book, My Watch, Tuesday, in Lagos, days after the court order.
The court had ordered that the book launch be put on hold over claim the three-volume series contained details of a libel case already before the court.
The case involves a drug trafficking allegation made by Mr. Obasanjo against Buruji Kasahmu, a leader of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the southwest.
Mr. Kashamu had requested the court order to stop the release of the book, citing the case.
But the move is believed to have been a cover to block Mr. Obasanjo from making public some of his most scathing assessments of President Goodluck Jonathan, as contained in the book.
Mr. Kasahmu is an ally of President Jonathan.
On Tuesday, the former president defied the court order and proceeded with the book launch saying the judge acted in error and deserved to be sanctioned.
The former president also said the book had already been published before the court gave its order.
Justice Valentine Ashi, in a ruling Wednesday, gave Mr. Obasanjo 21 days to demonstrate why he should not be punished for going ahead to publish the book.
The court also ordered the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS) and the Comptroller of Customs to recover all the books all book stands, sales agents, vendors, the sea and airports and deposit them with the court’s registrar pending the determination of the case.
Mr. Ashi said it was immaterial that the book was published before the interim orders were made.
He said Mr. Obasanjo should not have in the first place published the book since the Kashamu case was already in court.
“The fact that the book was published in November is irrelevant. As long as the substantive suit is not yet determined, no party is entitled to publish or comment on material facts that are yet to be decided on by the court,” the judge said.
“I hold the defendant, not only in contempt of the court, but to show cause why he should not be punished for contempt and ordered to undo what he has wrongly done.”
“The defendant, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo shall be given 21 days, from the day this order is served on him, to show cause, via affidavit, why he should not be punished for contempt committed by publishing and distributing for sale to the public, the book, My Watch, in plain disregard of the pendency of substantive the suit and the order of this court made on December 5, 2014 restraining him from doing so.
“The defendants, whether by himself, agents, servants, privies or whatever name called, is hereby restrained from further publication or offering for sale or distribution, in any way or manner, the book called My Watch or the like of the visual or written materials which contains a re-publication or statement extracted from the letter referred to by the plaintiff,” the judge said.
He also ordered that orders of the court be served on all media houses in the country and be equally served on Mr. Obasanjo by publication in two national dailies.
The judge rejected claims by Mr. Obasanjo’s lawyer that Mr. Kashamu failed to produce the book to prove it contained libellous details.
The judge said it was the duty, instead, of the defendant, in whose custody the book was, to show the court that the plaintiff’s fear was misplaced.
He said Mr. Obasanjo’s failure to do so, showed he had something to hide.
Mr. Obasanjo’s lawyer, Realwon Okpanach, said the former president will appeal the ruling.
He said the court order, which the former president flouted, was given in error since it was not proven that the book contained libellous materials.
“The orders made cannot be enforced. They want the court to stop an act that had been concluded. That is impossible. We had published the book in November, they came before the court in December and asked that the publishing shroud be stopped. Is that possible?” he said.
“We shall file our appeal within the stipulated time of 14 days in the case of interlocutory orders.”

The IG also warned against the use of fireworks and other explosives during the celebration, noting that they could cause distraction that may further heighten fear of insecurity.
According to a statement, on Wednesday in Abuja, by the Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, the police boss enjoined citizens to shun all forms of violence and unlawful acts.
