The FBI has dismantled a global phishing ring and recovered more than $16 million in a crackdown on fraudulent email schemes. A total of 74 people were arrested across a number of territories, including the U.S. and Nigeria, with most of those arrested accused of taking part in a “business email compromise” scam.
It’s one of the most enduring social engineering attacks in the digital world and is said by some authorities to have led to the loss of more than $3.7 billion since the Internet Crime Complaint Center began tracking it, as per Ars Technica. That said, the FBI and Department of Justice have struck a blow to its global reach with this latest string of arrests.
In the U.S. 42 people were arrested, with a further 29 detained in Nigeria. Arrests were also made in Canada, Mauritius, and Poland, with all of those arrested involved in the phishing scam in some capacity. Reportedly........

Robots are now learning Cyber Attacks through video games. They trained themselves by playing video games such as GO and StarCraft

Researchers in Silicon Valley are using strategy games, such as Starcraft II, to teach systems how to solve complex problems on their own.

The UK Ministry of Defence report on artificial intelligence warns that Robots that train themselves in battle tactics by playing video games could be used to mount cyber-attacks.

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) fears that artificial intelligence can be “readily adapted” to wage cyber war.

Officials are particularly concerned about the ability of rogue states and terrorists to mount advanced persistent threat attacks, which can disable critical infrastructure and steal sensitive information. North Korea have been accused of such attacks recently.

Nothing is safe especially when adequate measures are not taken to secure them. According to a report from BBC twitter suffer a password leak.

The report has it that Twitter’s 330 million users are being urged to change their passwords after some were exposed in plain text on its internal network.

An error in the way the passwords were handled meant some were stored in easily readable form, said Twitter.

The passwords should have been put through a procedure called “hashing” making them very difficult to read.

Security experts said the way Twitter handled the potential breach was “encouraging”.

The government seek to censor Telegram, to many, that is not surprising because Russian authority have been hard on social media and instant messaging apps in the past years.
Telegram is an instant messaging app created by Pavel Durov and his elder brother Nikolai Durov both Russians.

BBC reports that the Russian government has started legal proceedings to block the Telegram messaging app in the country.

The Roskomnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media) who are media regulator is seeking the block because the firm has refused to hand over encryption keys used to scramble messages. Telegram, which is based in Dubai, was given a deadline of 4 April to hand over the keys. The company has refused, saying the way the service is built means it has no access to them.

Russia’s main security agency, the FSB, wants the keys so it can read messages and prevent future terror attacks in the country.

In its court filing, Roskomnadzor said the legal action was related to the FSB request and Telegram’s non-compliance with its legal requirements as a “distributor of information”.
