PoliticsSaharareporters Projects Buhari As President-elect by clemhova(op): 5:44am On Mar 31, 2015
SaharaReporters is confidently projecting Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of last weekend’s presidential election based on collated poll results from 95 percent of Nigeria’s polling units. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will resume the official release of the poll figures at 10 a.m. Nigerian time today, with Mr. Buhari all but certain to be declared the president-elect.

Last night, INEC suspended the official release of the state-by-state vote counts for the keenly contested presidential election. However, with only five percent of votes remaining to be added up, our figures indicate that Mr. Buhari is leading incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan by more than two million votes. In addition, the APC candidate has secured at least twenty-five percent of votes cast in two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states. Mr. Buhari has so far won 14,855,820 million votes, with Mr. Jonathan trailing him with 12,107,628 million.

Our analysis, based on collated votes that were already announced in different states, shows that there is no statistical pathway open to Mr. Jonathan to surmount his vote deficit with very few polling units left to account for.

INEC’s formal declaration of Mr. Buhari as the winner of the presidential election will represent a historic moment in Nigeria’s history, being the first time that an opposition candidate would unseat an incumbent head of government at the federal level. Another historic aspect is the fact that Mr. Buhari finally triumphed on his fifth run as a presidential candidate of one of Nigeria’s parties.

PoliticsBREAKING: Jonathan Writes Senate, Nominates Obanikoro, 7 Others As Ministers by clemhova(op): 2:57pm On Feb 17, 2015
The Nigerian Senate has received a correspondence from President Goodluck Jonathan listing seven nominees for ministerial appointments.
Among the nominees are a former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, Kenneth Kobani, a former National Treasurer of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria [ACN], who recently defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, and a former Senator from Nasarawa, Patricia Akwashiki.
Others are Professor Nicholas Akise Ada (Benue); Augustine Akobundu (Abia), Zonal Chairman, South-East PDP; Engr. Fidelia Nwankwo (Ebonyi), Hauwa Lawan (Jigawa) and Senator Joel Danlami Ikenya (Taraba).
The President of the Senate, David Mark, read the correspondence from Mr. President on the floor as the upper legislative chamber resumes deliberation after weeks of recess.
Mr. Obanikoro was one of the biggest casualties of the gubernatorial primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP], after resigning his ministerial position on October 15 to vie for the party’s ticket in Lagos for the 2015 election.
He lost to Jimi Agbaje, a relatively less known candidate, who had the backing of the party’s most powerful leaders in Lagos.
Alongside Mr. Obanikoro, former ministers Emeka Wogu, Labaran Maku, Onyebuchi Chukwu, and Samuel Ortom, also lost their bids after leaving their posts to contest in their respective states.
Mr. Obanikoro rejected the Lagos results and filed a legal challenge against the declaration of Mr. Agbaje as winner, kicking off a row that has the potential to ruin any chances the party may have in snatching Lagos from All Progressives Congress, APC in 2015.
The logjam was finally been resolved amicably after President Goodluck Jonathan assured Mr. Obanikoro he would reappoint him to cabinet as part of a deal personally brokered by the President to get him to discontinue his legal challenge of the PDP governorship primary result for Lagos State.
Mr. Obanikoro later withdrew his court case, at the same time promising to fully support Mr. Agbaje as the PDP candidate.
The former minister is currently enmeshed in a huge controversy after he was heard in a leaked tape plotting the rigging of last year’s governorship election in Ekiti state.

Hoodlums stone Jonathan’s convoy in Katsina

JANUARY 20, 2015 BY OLALEKAN ADETAYO, ABUJA
45 Comments
Unidentified political thugs on Tuesday attacked the convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan in Katsina State during the continuation of his re-election campaign.

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), is from the state.

Trouble started when Jonathan, accompanied by Vice President Namadi Sambo; National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu; and Governor Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State among others, decided to pay a courtesy visit to the late President Umoru Yar’Adua’s mother, Hajiya Dada.

As the President and members of his entourage made their way into the Yar’Adua Quarters, the brooms-wielding youths, who were suspected to be members of the APC, chanting “Sai Buhari,” surged forward.

Security agents had a hectic time dispersing the crowd.

The youths regrouped and again moved to attack the President’s convoy as he was ready to leave the residence after the visit.

Security agents fired tear gas canisters to disperse the youths to allow vehicles in the convoy speed off.

As the presidential delegation made their way towards the Katsina Airport, the youths hurled stones at the convoy.

No case of injury was however reported.

While addressing a rally earlier at the National Youth Service Corps Orientation Camp in the state capital, Jonathan had attributed his Presidency to the late President, who, he said, chose him as the Vice President in 2007.

For this reason, the President promised to always meet the needs of the people of the state before they ask.

“But for you, I would not have been here today. It was your own son that brought me as his deputy. Anything that you want from me, we will do it without you asking for it.” he said.

He listed some of the achievements of his administration to include the establishment of a federal university and establishment of Almajiri schools among others.

On security situation in parts of the country, Jonathan said, “We have challenges like many other countries in the world but we are still managing because of our focus. We will get through our challenges because we are working hard and you know it.”

Jonathan asked them to vote for him and Sambo to enable them to continue to work for the peace and progress of the state.

Earlier, while on a courtesy call on the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumuni Usman, Jonathan recalled that his political odyssey at the centre started in Katsina when he became vice president to the late Yar’Adua.
PoliticsReal Reason Buhari Is Travelling To U.S. by clemhova(op): 8:59pm On Jan 20, 2015
Contrary to claims that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress [APC], is travelling to the United States for medical reasons, PREMIUM TIMES has obtained a correspondence indicating Mr. Buhari is only honouring an invitation by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies [CSIS].
Media reports had suggested some days ago that the APC candidate had become so sick that he was planning a medical trip abroad. Mr. Buhari responded by saying he was not sick but only had cold.
But PREMIUM TIMES has now obtained a letter signed by the Director, African Programme of CSIS, Jennifer Cooke, inviting Mr. Buhari to the organisation’s headquarters in Washington DC “to give a major public address on Nigeria’s future as it stands on the edge of a pivotal national elections.”
Ms. Cooke gave Mr. Buhari the liberty to choose a convenient date for the proposed lecture.
“We propose to hold this event on a day of your choosing on either the week of January 5th or the week of January 26th, 2015 but will of course do our best to accommodate your schedule should you have other preferences.”
Travelling at this time would mean Mr. Buhari opted for the week of January 26th.
Ms. Cooke who said the event is expected to attract a large number of United State policymakers, academics, business leaders and members of the diaspora, also told Mr. Buhari that he would be expected to take part in a private off-the-record briefing with a small group of senior US government officials and U.S Congress.
“The event would be on-the-record and given the importance of Nigeria’s elections would be certain to attract a large audience of U.S. policymakers, academics, business leaders, and members of the diaspora. In addition, we invite you to take part in a private, off-the-record briefing with a small group of senior officials from the U.S. government and U.S. Congress. This will be an excellent opportunity to develop contacts and articulate your key messages to an influential audience of foreign policy decision-makers.”
“The CSIS Africa Program has long been engaged in research and analysis on the African continent, and Nigeria specifically. For the past year, we have hosted a conference series analyzing various dimensions of Nigeria’s forthcoming elections and their implications for peace, security, and prosperity in Africa’s most important country. These conferences have provided a platform for Nigerian statesmen to interact directly with Washington policymakers and we wanted to extend this opportunity to you. We hope that your schedule permits your participation and look forward to receiving a positive reply.”

PoliticsOlusegun Obasanjo Declares He Is Now ‘ABJ’ - Anything But Jonathan. by clemhova(op): 6:51am On Jan 14, 2015
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo today escalated his rejection of President Goodluck Jonathan’s second term bid by declaring his current mindset to be “Anything But Jonathan” (ABJ).

He expressed his feelings to several of his aides following a late evening meeting with President Jonathan at his home in Abeokuta. Both men were in the presence of Pastor Adejare Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and Bishop David Oyedepo of Winner’s Chapel.

To make matters worse, a few hours after meeting with Jonathan, Obasanjo met with leaders of the All People’s Congress (APC) and their presidential candidate, Muhammad Buhari, where he affirmed he will support the best candidate regardless of party affiliation.

Jonathan’s closed-door meeting with Obasanjo clearly failed to soften the former leader’s hostility towards his floundering re-election bid as Obasanjo bluntly told him that having referred to him as a “tout”, it was hypocritical for Jonathan to turn around to describe him as the best president Nigeria ever had. It would also be recalled that two months ago, presidential adviser Doyin Okupe gave Jonathan that honor.

On Sunday, as he received members of the Northern Elders Council in Abuja, an angry Mr. Jonathan had in a barely-veiled description of Obasanjo, dismissed him as a statesman.

"Some people call themselves statesmen but they are not, they are just ordinary politicians,” Jonathan told his guests. “To be a statesman is not because you have occupied a big office before, but the question is what are you bringing to bear? Are you building this country or are you a part of people who tell lies to destroy the country?”

Upon arriving at the meeting with Obasanjo today, Jonathan tried to turn on the charm, lavishing praise on Obasanjo as he blamed the escalation of attacks on him as the work of his (Jonathan) aides.

President Obasanjo apparently did not buy any of the goods Jonathan was hawking. Shortly after the encounter, he told his aides he would not change his position on Jonathan’s presidential bid.

Obasanjo’s subsequent and open display of affection towards the APC leadership is reportedly sending shock waves up and down Jonathan’s camp, where it is regarded as confirmation that the conciliation efforts with Obasanjo have collapsed, leaving him in grave political danger with the election just one month away. It will be the first time a PDP candidate tried to win the presidency with Obasanjo not the candidate, or firmly on his side.

SaharaReporters has also learnt that before the meeting with Buhari today in Abeokuta, the former president had written a letter to Buhari to smoothen their relationship.

CareerCostly Mistakes To Avoid In Your Cover Letter by clemhova(op): 10:41pm On Jan 07, 2015
It's been said that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. And if you submit a bad cover letter, you won't get a chance to make that first impression on employers.

Costly Mistake #1: Using Generic Content
If your cover letter is full of generic content, the hiring manager may assume that if you were too lazy to craft a specialized cover letter, you may be as nonchalant about performing your job.
And, generic cover letters are usually easy to spot, according to Lars Schmidt, senior director of talent acquisition & innovation at National Public Radio in Washington, DC. "They don't address the specifics of that job, so they likely won't stand out to a hiring manager."
Click to read about high-paying careers - no bachelor's required.
So, how do you go about writing the type of cover letter that gets read?
Well, you should tailor your cover letter to each job, according to Schmidt. "It's okay to have a general template (or several), but be sure to address some of the qualities you possess that tie directly to that job and employer," says Schmidt.

Costly Mistake #2: Being Preoccupied With Your Ultimate Career Goal
Maybe you really want a more prestigious job, or one that pays enough money to keep up with the Joneses. However, if you indicate to the hiring manager that this job is just a temporary stop along the way to a better position, you'll appear ungrateful.
"Most hiring managers want to know what skills, experience, and interest you bring to this particular job," says Schmidt. "If you essentially tell them you view the job as something to just 'pay the bills,' they'll pass and find others who aspire to be in that role."
Click to read about degrees you can earn anytime you want.
So, keep your lofty goals to yourself if they don't relate to the job you're applying for.
For example, Leigh Inskeep, who works in Human Resources at Kinder Morgan and writes resumes for Rave.Resumes.com, says that a graphic designer applying for a position that requires HTML experience should write about his proficiency in programming languages, instead of writing about how he can't wait to launch his own graphic design company.

Costly Mistake #3: Displaying Egotism
If you hoard the cover letter by using most of the space to talk about yourself, the hiring manager may see you as a narcissist who will also hog conversations and the company's time.
"Overuse of first-person pronouns, such as 'I,' 'me,' or 'my,' send the message that you're more concerned about yourself than the organization," says Atkins. Instead, he says the cover letter should address the specific wants and needs of the company.
Click to read about seven good-pay careers that need little schooling.
Therefore, instead of "I would like to speak with you," Atkins recommends, "It would be great to speak with you." And instead of "I am available," write, "Would you be available?"This shows respect for the hiring manager, and demonstrates that it's not all about you, he says.
And when you do talk about yourself, it should be in the context of being a useful and productive team member. For example, a software developer must be able to work independently, but also function as part of a team, "so include characteristics like your ability to work well with others, and how you're open to receiving feedback and critiques from others," Inskeep says.

Costly Mistake #4: Not Proofreading Before You Hit "Send"
Submitting a cover letter with typographical and syntax errors may send the message that you are a careless worker who considers slipshod work perfectly acceptable.
"Mistakes on your cover letter can cost you dearly," says Atkins. "Many hiring managers have said that when they get a resume containing errors, it goes immediately in the 'unacceptable' pile."
Click to read about careers that pay more than $30 an hour.
For example, if a company is hiring a human resources manager, Inskeep says this individual is responsible for making sure that the company's documents can pass legal scrutiny. "If they can't submit an error-free cover letter, how can the company trust the accuracy of their work if there's ever any type of legal or ethics investigation?" asks Inskeep.

Costly Mistake #5: Revealing Too Much
Maybe your former boss didn't appreciate your hard work, but badmouthing past employers in your cover letter will leave hiring managers wondering if you have unresolved issues.
"Listing non-relevant personal details before you've had an opportunity to establish interest will usually work against you," warns Schmidt. "You want to make a connection based on your skills and experience."
Click to read about seven hot careers that are hiring aggressively.
And even if you're not sharing bitter experiences, it's still a good idea to make sure that you don't share intimate details.
"It is a very common mistake for candidates to share too much personal information," says Inskeep.

Costly Mistake #6: Overly Displaying Your Artistic Side
Your cover letter is not the place to express your inner child. In other words, leave the cursive type, wild colors, smiley faces, and rainbow backgrounds for another occasion.
"There is a trend lately to try and be provocative in a cover letter to stand out," says Schmidt. He says that sometimes this may work, but it really depends on the audience and culture of the organization, so think carefully about the intended receiver.
Click to read about seven degrees you can earn while keeping your job.
As a general rule, your uniqueness should be expressed through your job skills, not through the use of flowery stationery, or emoticons such as smiley faces, frowns, and winks.
"People don't have time for the fluffy stuff, and emoticons look unprofessional and sophomoric," warns Inskeep. "Hiring managers are accustomed to seeing proper English language and punctuation." For example, if a financial analyst applicant sends in a cover letter on pink stationery with emoticons, the hiring manager will think, "if this is how they communicate with our high-powered clients, it will undermine our company's credibility."

PoliticsMust Read: Why We Run Away From Boko Haram Terrorists – Army Commander Writes PG by clemhova(op): 10:59pm On Dec 27, 2014
In a desperate letter to President Goodluck Jonathan and Senate President David Mark leaked to SaharaReporters this past weekend, a commanding officer stationed in Nigeria’s northeast details several troubling issues plaguing troops combatting Islamist terror group Boko Haram in the region.

The officer stated that, corruption, maladministration, lack of resources and troops motivation has militated against a successful campaign to end Boko Haram’s deadly reign of terror in the northeast.

The officer’s lengthy complaint which he claims would lead to a threat to his life forewarns that if his pleas continue to be ignored by the country’s leadership that both the Nigerian Army and the country will crumble under the insurgency.

“If all issues raised in this letter are not urgently addressed, the Nigerian Army will soon be history and by implication there will be no country called Nigeria,” the officer gravely states. “No country without a strong army will survive.”

Below is the full text of the officer’s letter addressed to President Goodluck Jonathan
