moderatorr: Its all about being actually poor.So Uruguay is a poor country yet their pet capita income is about £500 Let us just admire the man's simplicity and leave it there. |
It is a common grumble that politicans' lifestyles are far removed from those of their electorate. Not so in Uruguay. Meet the president - who lives on a ramshackle farm and gives away most of his pay. Laundry is strung outside the house. The water comes from a well in a yard, overgrown with weeds. Only two police officers and Manuela, a three-legged dog, keep watch outside. This is the residence of the president of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, whose lifestyle clearly differs sharply from that of most other world leaders. President Mujica has shunned the luxurious house that the Uruguayan state provides for its leaders and opted to stay at his wife's farmhouse, off a dirt road outside the capital, Montevideo. The president and his wife work the land themselves, growing flowers. "I've lived like this most of my life," he says, sitting on an old chair in his garden, using a cushion favoured by Manuela the dog. "I can live well with what I have." His charitable donations - which benefit poor people and small entrepreneurs - mean his salary is roughly in line with the average Uruguayan income of $775 (£485) a month. All the president's wealth - a 1987 VW Beetle In 2010, his annual personal wealth declaration - mandatory for officials in Uruguay - was $1,800 (£1,100), the value of his 1987 Volkswagen Beetle. This year, he added half of his wife's assets - land, tractors and a house - reaching $215,000 (£135,000). That's still only about two-thirds of Vice-President Danilo Astori's declared wealth, and a third of the figure declared by Mujica's predecessor as president, Tabare Vasquez. Elected in 2009, Mujica spent the 1960s and 1970s as part of the Uruguayan guerrilla Tupamaros, a leftist armed group inspired by the Cuban revolution. He was shot six times and spent 14 years in jail. Most of his detention was spent in harsh conditions and isolation, until he was freed in 1985 when Uruguay returned to democracy. Those years in jail, Mujica says, helped shape his outlook on life. This austere lifestyle - and the fact that Mujica donates about 90% of his monthly salary, equivalent to $12,000 (£7,500), to charity - has led him to be labelled the poorest president in the world. A new Graduate Sales Representatve has just been employed in my company two months ago and deployed as a member of my sales team group. However, I have been observing a very slow-rate of learning even basic sales tips on his part. He was given a laptop and a modem for his sales report but it took him close to 2weeks to churn out his first Daily Sales report through the laptop. What he normally did was to call out the firgures for me through the phone on daily basis after claiming "No Network" while other will send theirs as at when due. But something happened yesterday that warranted me to issue him a query, oh goodness me! what i got as a reply shocked me to my marrows. I was like how could this daft, dumb and brainless skull have scaled through the rigorous and tedious interview processes of a Multinational Company (FMCG) like ours? Below is his response Unedited except the name: "my phone went off because i have fate bartry .and during the peroid iam sill on the trade with new vam ,because ofwhat we are withness in that zone ,mr daninel ,that reason ,why i can be reach. iam very sorry it will not happen again thank aki ade" |

afam4eva: My most embarrassing moment was after we had written out last NECO exams and people's shirts were been torn by classmates. At first i wanted to escape through another route but thought otherwise. Afterall it's just the shirt. I'm not going to need it anymore anyways so i can afford to let it go. As i approached the 1diots that were tearing people shirts, not only did they tear my shirt but they also tore my trouser into shreds. That was when reality dawned on my that i was the ponly person whose boxers was in the nude in the whole school. Everyone was just staring at me...i was highly embarrassed.Afam ......NECO......hmm .... Such a young guy ![]() |
@OP, stop spreading untruths initiated by suspicious journalists. What Fashola said was that he believes that Lagos State accounts for up to 65% of non-oil GDP, but we do not have any data to support the statement. If the OP has any data to support Fashola's claims, please post. I counter Fashola's statement by stating that Kano State accounts for more than the percentage contributed by Lagos state. For the ignorant folks, note that Agricuulture contributed 40% to the Real GDP and if you look at non oil GDP alone, that contribution will be higher than 40%. It is ridiculous and deceptive to make a bogus claim that Lagos State contributes 65% to non oil GDP. You can verify 2012 Q2 GDP Report here. Go to Table 6: 2011 and Q1—Q2 2012 Real Gross Domestic Product (Constant 1990): Sectoral Contribution & Growth Rate (Percentages) section and see for yourselves. I don't know why politicians lie like this.
If your assertion was correct, my advice would be for you and your Never-Developed State to use that as your mainstay instead of being a parasite to other state's resources! Hope you got my drift ![]() |
