Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by CNN80: 5:25pm On May 01, 2019
HI,

Thanks so much for answering me. I really appreciate it.

I wasn't planning to run any of the heavy power equipment on the batteries although I'm now considering running one AC, maybe one of those inverter ACs.

None of the offers was for a Lithium Battery. The 8 batteries offers were tubular batteries; the 10/12 Lead Acid.

The Lithium Ion Battery offer was for a SmartLiving PowerWall LiFePO4 Battery Pack (48 V 200Ah/9,600 Wh) with 12 315W Monocrystalline Solar Panels and a 6kVA Hybrid Inverter.

I'm looking to conserve power not consume it so the plan is to be as efficient as possible. Which is why I was hoping for an inverter or controller that will send power to the entire house when solar or grid energy is detected and power to a few designated power points when battery energy is detected.

What is special about the Quanta battery? What kind is it? Have you used it before?

Do you have any recommendations for inverters?

NiyiOmoIyunade:
Good day Sir and many thanks for the A2A.

When I add all your loads together, I get 1.12kw without ACs while with one AC as you stated we are looking at 2.6kw of loads.

With any lead acid battery bank you are looking at at least 20-24 units of 12v 200Ah batteries to power 2.6kw of loads continuously except AC use is planned for solar hours or On-Grid only. With 1.12kw of loads we are looking at 10-12 12v 200Ah batteries to power the load continuously.

With a Lithium bank, you may be able to get away with 80% DoD and a smaller battery bank size albeit at a steep entry cost.

For 1.12Kw of loads, 12pcs of 250w panels should do, although I always like to oversize my PV array slightly, 2.6kw of loads we are looking at the 18-24 panel option (assuming 48v nominal inverter and batteries).

I can't tell which is Lithium or Lead Acid in your 3 battery options but all the battery sizes appear rather undersized for the loads you want to power except you scale down the loads or actively manage them.

Long and short is none of the offers seem to cut it at first glance, you would probably have to mix and match across the offers.

For panels, I recommend Canadian Solar for solid performance at a good price - You may reach out directly to discuss how you may optimize your system design and I can also supply you Canadian Solar panels and Quanta batteries at very good prices if you wish.

FamilyRe: Please support, let's Bury My Dad by CNN80: 1:59pm On Apr 30, 2019
I see from your username that you are Igbo.

Let's be clear. All this cooking for people for burial (unless you come from a prominent family or the individual has serious title) is against what most of us knew when growing up. In fact, your mother is not supposed to the cooking in this her period of mourning. It's your relatives that are supposed to be taking care of her needs during this time.

As for the actually burial itself, my father has planned burial in 24 hours.

Timeline

5:00 am - Discovered an elderly relative had died in his sleep

5:30 am - Deposited body in mortuary

7:00 am - Meeting of Umunna where he informed them that he will not be paying for another night in the mortuary so they must bury the man that day. After discussions where no one was willing to keep paying for such an unnecessary expense, every family was charged to bring one food item/drink according to their power. Some bought a bag of rice, some vegetable oil, some a crate of malt or beer or soda, some tomato and pepper, some garri, some things for soup. A group of people coordinated to make sure things weren't being repeated. Someone even brought firewood. Since the man was a pagan, emissaries were sent to the Igwe's palace to inform him an elder had died. The grave was dug that evening by the youth.

Next day 6:00 am - Traditional gunshots were fired, body was retrieved, taken to his maternal home and then brought back to his compound for burial. Cooking had been done overnight and the man was buried with very little expense to his bereaved ones.

That is how a burial should be arranged. Do not spend more than you can afford.

Chiadikaobi:
I appreciate you all the Great men that posted above. You know life is a teacher and we learn from others. Our only fear lies on entertaining the Guests as regards to what to eat and not that we are planning a presidential burial. Just normal burial activities and money don rise.

Nawa o. This is a first time experience of losing someone so close and dear. I've been typing RIP on people's timeline but never knew what they pass through.

Thank you my people, Infact, i don leave everything to God. I will get back to this thread to brief the house how everything went after may 11 which is less than 2weeks from now. Thank you all

Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by CNN80: 10:14pm On Apr 29, 2019
Hello Niyi,

I was hoping you could help me out as you know a lot about batteries.

I want to install a 5kVA solar PV system at home. I have had offers for regular lead acid batteries, tubular batteries and lithium ion batteries (GSL Powerwall). I want to know what you think is a good option for me.

Setup wise, I've had the following offers

12 Solar Panels (24V, 250W); 8 batteries (12V, 150A)

20 Solar Panels (24V, 250W); 10 batteries (200Ah)/12 batteries (150Ah)

16 Solar Panels (250W); 8 batteries (220Ah)

According to my estimates, the fridges use 450W, the TV 100W, the ACs 1472W, the Fans 375W, the Bulbs 135W and the Laptop 60 W.

We are moving house so the plan is to cut down on our energy use. Consequently, I'm hoping to wire the house in such a way that when the inverter is receiving power from the panel or grid, everything can be put on but when the inverter is drawing power from the batteries, only essential power points will be available.

I've been reading some of your posts and would really appreciate your input.

Thanks

NiyiOmoIyunade:
I agree with these broad conclusions but 500 cycles for Quanta would imply end users get less than 2 years life at 50% DoD per day.

To throw in some real life into all these spec sheets;

I have actual field data from at least 100 12v 200Ah batteries I have installed - a good number of them have already passed the 2 year mark and still going strong - this with users who don't even know what DoD means or respect DoD.

I can only conclude that the Quanta manufacturer estimates are overly conservative or the battery capacity is understated.

Oga Dapsyra gave some hard field data for his LTO batteries over a 15month period - I look to similar field data for the BattleBorns instead of just projected lab results.

I do not think it is practical to use a 100% DoD assumption for any battery bank with more than one battery connected in series except the battery capacity was understated.

I would really love a LTO or similar bank to play with but the entry cost is rather steep - sad to say I 'd rather replace my Quanta 3 times over a 10 year period than throw 10 million naira into a Lithium battery bank and hope for a 10 year lifespan without field evidence to back me up.

Nearly 80% of the Lithium reviews I come across tell me people are still trying to gain mastery of this Lithium tech.
Science/TechnologyRe: Thread For Solar System/Electricity Owners in Nigeria. by CNN80: 2:41pm On Apr 29, 2019
Yes, of course. I'm not going off-grid. I just want to have more reliable power. The whole setup is going to be a hybrid. The inverter will charged by solar when it's available and grid electricity when there's no sun. As a last resort, a generator will be used. I already have an inverter setup to back up grid power. I just want to go a set further. This heat is killing.

What I was hoping for is that under normal circumstances, solar power should support the house from 10 am to around 5 pm. The house is usually empty so the only things that will be running are the fridges and the washing machine (put on a timer to start around 1 pm). Then when, the sun goes down, the batteries kick in (assuming there is no grid power). When this happens, I want power to be available to only the necessary power points (lights, fans, TVs). I want the change to happen automatically so that if it rains, the heavy equipment do not drain the batteries. In which case, when we get home, we can run the generator.

I'm looking to install a 5kVA system.

wirinet:
No power system is 100% reliable and consistent. That is why there must always be backups if power is required 365 days of the year. It is possible to design and electronic switch socket that works only after a pre determined voltage is reached, but that will not also be 100% reliable. What happens when you have the 7 days rain we used to experience in the West. Your freezer would thaw and the contents would spoil.

You must have a back up generator or even use grid electricity as back up for the few days of cloudiness that happens every year.
Science/TechnologyRe: Thread For Solar System/Electricity Owners in Nigeria. by CNN80: 1:51pm On Apr 29, 2019
Looks like a good idea but isn't it limited by time? If I program it for when I assume there'll be sunshine and it starts raining, won't there be a problem?

wirinet:
Ok, I get what you mean now.

You can get programmable plug in digital timer switch for the loads you want to run during sunshine hours only. You don't need to touch the wirings.

Below is an example of programmable plug in digital timer switch;

They are not so expensive, you can order direct from alibaba or aliexpress.
Science/TechnologyRe: Thread For Solar System/Electricity Owners in Nigeria. by CNN80: 1:49pm On Apr 29, 2019
I'm not planning to go off grid entirely. I just want to have as many options as possible without a large battery investment. I was first advised to use tubular batteries but then, an installer offered the option of the GSL Powerwall. Making a decision has been tough. I like the idea of programmable inverters. I'm planning for a 5kVa solar installation and I want to maximize its use.

chris81964:
You can buy inverters that will allow you to program parameters that would allow for them to only provide power when those parameters are met. You can also prioritize different power sources. If you are willing to spend the money the Schneider Electric and Victron Energy inverter will allow you to do that. I run my home and office on solar power and I used repurposed EV lithium ion batteries. I have been 100% off grid since January of 2017 and the home and office has experience 24/7 power. We run all our water pumps, microwave oven and other household appliances. On very sunny days we run our 1 hp AC on it.
Science/TechnologyRe: Thread For Solar System/Electricity Owners in Nigeria. by CNN80: 12:33pm On Apr 29, 2019
Hi, thanks for replying. Sorry, I was not clear before. When I said from the panel, I meant through the inverter. Basically, I was wondering if the wiring could be done such that once the inverter is drawing power from the batteries, some sockets are automatically bypassed. I want to be sure that if I leave the house, my fridge will run only when the inverter is drawing power from the panel.

I received a quote for a solar installation with GSL Powerwall and I'm looking for people who have had experience with it or something similar.

wirinet:
Yes, I have lots of experimental experience with lithium ion batteries I salvaged from laptop batteries, but I have not been able to install one with solar power installation. This is principally because, I have not seen them yet in the Nigerian market . I plan going to Alaba to look for them.

If you are connecting your panels to single point DC loads, it's possible to draw power directly from the panels, ie, to power loads like DC fans and DC phone charger, but to power AC load passing through a battery and inverter, it is not possible to power direct from panel.
The best solution to powering the whole house with solar through inverter and battery is to oversize the panels and drive most energy sapping loads like freezer and big TVs (especially LCD), Desktop computers, high power fans or airconditioner during the day, and then run only critical loads like LED lights, small TVs or LED TVs, laptops, low power fans, with the battery during the night.
That way you will not spend a fortune on batteries and your batteries would not be put under too much stress.
Science/TechnologyRe: Thread For Solar System/Electricity Owners in Nigeria. by CNN80: 9:31am On Apr 29, 2019
Hi,
I want to install Solar Panels in my house and saw your post. Do you have any experience with Lithium-Ion Batteries, specifically, the Powerwall? Also, is it possible to configure the wiring in such a way that while all the whole house can draw power directly from the panels during the day, only necessary items can take power from the battery?

wirinet:
I have been an alternative power enthusiast for close to 20 years now and I have tried all sorts of products. I feel the problem of solar power is cost, which is determined by the configuration, long term cost and convenience.
Let me explain.
The way solar is installed in Nigeria is not cost effective or convenient. The weak points in solar installations are the battery and the inverter, while the strongest point is the solar panels itself. Good inverters that can last up to 10years are very expensive, these are the US brands. The next best inverters are Indian, they last between 2 - 5 years before developing problems. Chinese ones are a waste of money.
Batteries are also very expensive and inefficient, especially lead based ones. You should not draw lead acid batteries beyond 50% DOD if you wish to get reasonable time on its usage. Depending on DOD, you can get between 6months to 2 years on it. The best and most efficient chemistry for solar batteries is lithium. You can draw li-ion or liPO4 to 85% DOD without any problem. Lithium batteries can go 5 years without any significant loss of capacity. Although it is more expensive, to enjoy solar energy and avoid changing batteries every couple of years, lithium is the way to go.

I have a concept whereby you eliminate the inverter altogether and run most of your load directly from the panels during sunlight hours and run only essential loads like lights, fans, TVs, at night, thereby greatly reducing battery capacity. If you could run your car, truck and even moblie home with DC, why not essential loads like lights, fans, TVs and even small fridge-freezer.

Hello, I need advice. I have a 6 months Tbills investment I need to liquidate now. It's been running for about 2 months.

I bought it through my bank and when I asked about liquidation, they offered to liquidate by collecting back almost all my interest. I'll be left with just 6.6% of the interest even though I have gone through 1/3 of the tenure.

Is there a way to liquidate it so as to get a better deal? I really need the money as an opportunity I have been waiting for has finally come up.
