Crazeworld:Make your profile 100% complete, add portfolios, take on smaller jobs for reviews sake, make sure you apply to jobs you are sure you can do 99%, once your first few jobs result in a not too good feedback from client, it won't be easy for you to recover and it will be harder to get newer jobs. I only had one client who tried to scam me after using me for two weeks, he went on and gave me a very bad review after realizing that scamming me won't be easy, that's the only stain on my profile, since then i got wiser, i check client rating before applying to jobs, i also check clients feedback. Tips to get badges is everything i have posted on this thread. I didn't really have any challenge, the only one would be when i had an on-site full time job in lagos and i had to multitask |
Femolacaster:1) no please don't buy reviews, instead invite a client to upwork to hire you, 2) Try upload your nin slip, i know someone that used that to verify her account, but it seems it doesn't work every time 3)use your picture, not logo, you will be asked to do video verification where you will show your face, Infact you shouldn't be able to upload anything other than picture |
I got the 'top-rated plus' badge today |
SarutobiEky:There are threads here on nairaland that can help you. i got your email, will reply |
plantist:Yes, I think competition isn't too much on golang compared to PHP |
Karleb:I could post more, but with these few images I have attached, you should have an idea of what I mean when I say short precise proposals, sometimes i make a lot of typos in the proposals but since it is not a writing job client won't look at that

Karleb:For me I have noticed short and precise proposal works best, I will attach a few of my job-winning proposals below. In the past, I type really long proposals and before I click the send button, I will see that the client has either started interviewing someone or has hired someone, It's always painful spending 15 minutes typing a kick-ass proposal only to find out that the client has 'moved on', so I learnt to send short and precise proposals, I only write long proposals when i know that a lot of people won't apply to the job.

qtguru:Yes, at the early stage of your account, having Portfolio is important but once your profile has a lot of good reviews and earnings most clients won't look at portfolio again ( by portfolio i mean the one you will upload on your upwork profile), I haven't updated my portfolio in 3 years, infact what i have as portfolio is crap but i get at least 2 - 3 job invitations every other week. Infact right now my account is set to 'unavailable' because i don't want clients sending me job invites. |
Donpre:I believe that since they introduced 'paid connect' system, it has been easier to get account approved and yes i uploaded a valid ID, you will be asked to also, this will most likely be after you get your first job ( you will be asked to do video verification too), uploading ID and video verification is for 'verification' of account not 'approval' of account. Your account has already been approved |
Donpre:since you are able to apply to jobs, your profile has been accepted |
Crazeworld:yes that works when you are the first 2-3 to submit but once people with stronger profile start submitting yours starts to go down. |
Karleb:A typical dev job on upwork always have an average of 20 proposals, if you don't have a strong profile ( not top rated or don't have many reviews) and you are applying to job that already has 5-10 proposal ( i won't advice to apply to job with more than 10 proposals if you are just starting up) your proposal will be kicked down by upwork algorithm, meaning your proposal might not be the first 5 the client will see when he checks proposals for his job posting if your are lucky the clients scrolls down and see your proposal, One thing i always do is try to capture the client's attraction in the first sentence of my proposal, upwork will only show the first say 15 words from your proposal so you want to make sure that your first 15 words of your proposal is spot on, don't go beating about the bush listing your experience, sure you can do that but save it for the next paragraph, Your first sentence should show that you actually read the client's job description, to me i think that's what most client looks for first, someone that actually read the job description and not someone that is sending template. |
Karleb:I am trying not to diverge from the main topic, symfony has a steeper learning curve than laravel, You don't really need to know the core of PHP to be a laravel developer but if you dive into symfony with little knowledge of PHP you might struggle. Laravel itself uses 16 symfony components, if you ask me which i prefer I will say symfony, I like how it makes me the boss of my own code. If you ask me which i will advice a dev to learn i will say laravel, there are more laravel jobs than symfony and it is also easier to learn. |
Karleb:not much to say other than i applied, getting jobs on upwork is not so difficult if you have a strong profile ( with good reviews) and you can write good proposal. One mistake a lot of freelancers make is that they apply to jobs with template proposals, a serious client will definitely know that you made used of a template. |
Karleb:I have been using symfony almost everyday for the past 3 years. I have a full time job ( I got from upwork) and their stack is symfony and No i don't do WordPress ( in the past i used to) |
qtguru:This is true, I have a friend that averages $1.5k earnings per week working on WordPress Buddypress/buddyboss customization. |
Karleb:PHP (Symfony, Laravel), Javascript ( Vuejs), I have also been working with Reactjs of recent ( because of my job) |
Karleb:software development |
SegFault:Like i said you can update your skillset after creating an account, I know writers doing very well on upwork. |
SegFault:There are some skills on upwork that are already saturated ( too many freelancers have the skill) , my advice to you is to learn a skill that's uncommon then create your profile using that skillset, there are high chances upwork will approve the account, when they do, update your profile with your main skillset. I am a software developer and some of the skills that i know aren't saturated on upwork are :- machine learning, deep learning, rust, julia, R. I know it's not easy learning this languages but you can create an upwork account with this languages the day you start to learn them ( then update your profile later to reflect your strong hold) Upwork is one of the best freelancing platforms i have come across, in the past i tried fiverr, peopleperhour but bleh. |
Just Joined upwork and having problem landing your first job? Read this small post i wrote on how to get your first gig on upwork https://www.nairaland.com/5374190/guys-upwork-not-been-side#81730702 |

Hello guys, I got a Lexus gs300 last decemeber, I didn't know the car will be that low, the road that leads to my house was very bad and the car has been constantly hitting the floor. So i want to ask, can this damage anything in one month? The road has been repaired now but my car now makes a rattle sound anytime i start it, it is worse if it's the first start of the day. Second question, the two back tyre rims have black residue on them, it even leaves the black dust on the ground, someone suggests i need to change the brake pad? Is that the case? Third Question, I want to service my car, previous seller was using Toyota SL SAE 20w/50 ( black keg) but i can't find that same exact one here in ibadan, the closest i found is Toyota SJ SAE 20w/50 ( red keg) can i use that instead? Or can i use another oil ( your recommendation?) Fourth Question, I did wheel alignment a month ago and since then my afs light has been on, it seems i have to make adjustments to the afs sensor? But most mech here don't really know what that is, what do i tell them to check and where? Or can someone recommend to me a good mechanic in ibadan? Thank you P.s scanner only shows catalyst converter error code |

Etinosa1234:It's competitive but not as other niche, you just need to keep applying to jobs |
