If you are in Portharcourt then consider your problem solved! I can take you through in autocad from beginner to mid - level within a week. You can come back here and testify on this thread.

In addition, you shall be introduced to other sophisticated and more advanced package, based on your field. From structural designs, simulation, 3D modeling, animation and what have you. Get knowledge on how to start and end design/drawing based on industry standards.

What do you want from her?

Very difficult to get sponsorship from outside. If you are already working with any organization that requires such certifications, then chances are you may get sponsorship from them or get refunded after presenting your certificate.

Most organizations don't want to waste time training you, only for you to start asking for salary increment unnecessarily. The contractual stuff don't normally work in Nigeria. I know a guy that bolted out of a company after gulping 6 million naira in training within 3 months of signing a bond.

There is always a way round signing of bonds. For instance would you continue with a company paying 400K per month after receiving an offer of 1 million per month?

Economy against marketability is what you should be looking out for. CWI (AWS or CSWIP) is cheaper compare to CWeng, but what about their markebility? Presently, it will cost you around 400K to write CWI plus some 80K to get trained from a good tutor and almost twice that amount to get CWeng.
The problem lies in the number of people having CWI against those with CWeng and your chances of securing a job with both.

No one would want to hire a fresh welding inspector without some experience, considering the practical requirements of supervising welding in the field while on the other hands welding engineer (CWeng) has little or no connection with the field ( root gap, pre-heating temperature, visual inspection of deformity, inter-pass temperature and monitoring the conditions of welding equipments and all that) except if he/she wishes to observe the making of PQR and WPS or testing his designed welding joints. His presence is all optional. The welding supervisor/ Quality controller communicates to him the results of DT( destructive test) and the needs to either re-design the welding joints.

secondly, the job prospect of CWI is very slim when compared with CWeng (I may not have any statistics to back my claim) but, I talk from observation point of view. Do you know the number of people out there with CWI? The truth here is holder of CWeng certificaties are hot cakes. we only get expatriates when we call for CWeng while hundreds troop in with CWI.

Salary? The take home pay of CWeng doubles that of CWI.

Finally, the decision of which one to write is yours alone.

You'll get a mail frm me soonest. i just visited ya blog, quite interesting and awesome i have to say. i was already looking forward to meeting you till i got the info that you are not based in Lagos. Sad news. Youя designs are very diverse and dynamic, I have a lot to learn. Most firms request for proficiency in StaadPro, that's why i was leaning towards that earlier. What are youя views on that?

Secondly, am a Civil Engr that want to venture into FEED (front end engineering design) in the oil and gas industry viz subsea, pipeline, platform designs. Which design programs would you advise me to learn?

How did you start? i mean, youя blog is just soo interesting with all those designs, modeling with , if not, all the design softwares i've heard of + soo many that i didn't know existed. The building designs is what i'll love to learn personally for the freelance project i've been planning to start.

@Bold and other questions you may wish to ask in your mail, I'll give you specific reference with some direct lift from company standards of shell, total, agip and exxon mobil.

One more thing, autocad is only good for drafting 2D. The 3D modeling in autocad is NOT flexible and can be chunky. Can't deform curves to higher degrees.

Though, people consider it first stop for any engineer or draftman. The 2011 version came with mesh modeling of 3D which can come handy but still several years behind other packages with B-spline or free form designing tools.

The 2013 is improved upon greatly. one thing you have to give to autocad is universality and general acceptability across most industries.

Another advantage of starting 3D in autocad is the tools are interchangeable with other higher Autodesk software.

E.g thesame icon in autocad is replicated in inventor, so you will have less concern with acquaintance with newer icons. The UI is similar with other Autodesk packages like Autodesk 3D civil, Autodesk inventor, Autodesk 3D plant, Autocad detailing.

You should get a crack version in Lagos, computer village or get the license if you are capable of doing that.

About learning, I suggest you watch many YouTube videos you can or buy online training tutorials. You should be able learn it yourself as a trained civil engineer( Just an extension of what you already have in your brain)

I'm a CAD tutor and very versed with them. I use tons of software at professional level cutting across several engineering field of architecture, civil, production, mechanical and construction. I write and run scripts, cos no single application out there is perfect. when designing houses, I literally build them in computer 3D with all dimensions of as-built. when designing structural members I teleport myself into the world of CAD. I use 3D MAX for most rendering and animation with mental ray cos Vray normally drain computer resources. I use inventor or solidworks for mechanical design.

Go for Autodesk Robot or Tekla structures. I never fancy StaadPro.

Autodesk Robot is very flexible and comes with a plug in that enables a direct interfacing with Autodesk Inventor, Revit and AutoCad structural Detailing.


I used StaadPro and Tekla 14 but dumped them when I discovered Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis software.

My verdict? Autodesk Robot structural analysis all the way.

Insanity: Autodesk software and StaadPRO, which one is more flexible for a beginner to use? 'Cuz i want to learn any of the structural analysis softwares.

Why do you need a PGD in the first place? If you are aiming to become "hot" or to compliment your low grade then you are making another mistake.

instead, why not get a skill or learn a particular software? Look inward and bring out that little unique tendency you suppressed over the years and convert it to cash. I don't know your area of specialization but does it even matter what course you read? things are changing and are changing fast enough that most employers of labour do so on 'what can you do' basis. Think about what I said.

Get a certified welding engineer (CWeng) certification and become a hot cake instantly.

You may as well look into the following certifications.

CSWIP and AWS(welding inspection), BGAS and NACE( coating and painting), NDT ( non destructive test), QMS ( quality management system) and Safety.

Knowledge of any of the software like Hysis, Pdms, Pds, Tekla structures, autocad, CAESAR ( pipe stress analysis) solidworks, Autodesk P & ID, Autodesk 3D plant, Autodesk Robot structural analysis, compress or tank( pressure vessel design software), microstation
