In the night of Sunday 03 May 2026, history was made when the state-of-the-art Gateway International Airport in the Iperu-Ilishan axis of Ogun state had its first international flight.

Operated by Max Air, the flight departed the airport enroute Saudi Arabia with 345 muslim pilgrims (151 males and 194 females) accompanied by officials of the Ogun State Muslim pilgrims welfare board.

Via a statement on Monday 04 May 2026, Káyọ̀dé Akínmádé, special adviser on media and strategy to the state governor, confirmed that the aircraft landed safely at the King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

According to him, “The development signals the facility’s readiness to accommodate wide-body operations, reinforcing its compliance with global aviation standards and its capacity for long-haul international travel.”

“As crude prices moved up steeply, we tried to optimise the price of PMS (petrol) as much as possible to help the public,” the official said.

When asked if “optimisation” implied subsidy, the source answered in the affirmative.

Nothing wrong with the investors (AEDC investor was a reputable company even, for example, and a foreign company self)...once government sets prices, issues will result.

LIke the metering issue. SInce discos are subject to price controls, their profits as it were are not enough to pay for metering, so the government had to step in...to fix its mess by paying for meters...but as you know, the cost of doing that is high, even for gofment...so metering is not universal.

Nigeria as a nation has been underpaying its power sector for years. First during the time of NEPA, when many people did illegal connection, and also bypassed their meters...plus the government imposing price controls and not paying enough to offsett losses...and then when privatizaiton came....the then government passed a law that essentially prevented the businesses from setting their prices...in order to help the poor.

Well, you know what they say about good intentions.

Today, the power sector owes trillions of naira in debt to the gas companies...due to a combination of the following

1. Government is not paying enough subsides, because oil revenue has been bad for years, corruption, and because subsides don't cover losses from the power sector, unless you want to tell me that prices of stuff never change for decades.

2. People not paying their bills (now at 20%), people paying the subsidsied bills (aka underpayment) and people underpaying...even with subsidised bills in place. Less than 20% of consumers pay for the power at cost reflective tarrifs

So, my people, what do you expect.

Once you bring in comsumption subsides, corruption and inefficency ALWAYS follows. Meanwhile, as examplified by the GSM sector, that has been allowed to set prices for itself, albeit with some government control, but not to the point where they cannot even pay staff salaries....if you let a company make profits...it will grow. We went from zero home internet in 2003...to home internet nearly everywhere in 2023, because it makes sense to invest in telecoms.


Also, the reason why you have foods in the market and shops is because government is not setting prices of the foodstuff you buy. Last time they tried to do it....it led to queues, and scarcity. Until it was ended , and then food appeared on the shelf.


Anyone quoting me to call me agbado....is either saying that government is right to control prices, or that Peter Obi will control prices of any business when he takes over...and you know how it ends.

When you prevent a business from making money, there would be hell to pay. Literally and figuratively.



So, tell me, would you invest in a business where only 20% of consumers are paying, and where consumers beat up and threaten company workers who come to disconnect them for NOT PAYING?

On 2 occassions, Nigeria witnessed crude oil crashing to almost $0 - $10. Once when Russia and Saudi were enagged in a price was in 2015 and again during covid. So what does anyone expect to happen to a country who earns 80% of forex from Oil and Gas. Surely the currency must devalue!! But Buhari started selling crude in advance and borrowing and printing heaviliy to get money to spend and defend the Naira. That is the genesis of the mess Tinubu inherited. And had GEJ not totally spend the Excess Crude Account with nothing to show for it, we could have fallen back on that during the economic dark days during Buhari's tenure.

I blame Buhari 60% for where Nigeria is today, GEJ 30% and Tinubu just 5%.

Obi, but just becase we need a change from the impunity og governance as a whole. But I have not heard any cogent thing Peter Obi will do on the economy. The guy just speaks high level theory, with no specifics.

Having said that, Tinubu has done reasonably well on stabilizing the economy, roads, Tax reforms, Oil reforms and attracting FDI. But I think his government is rather corrupt. But Tinubu doesnt steal money in cash reckklessly like those aboki do. He uses projects to make his money.
