mrvitalis: Easier said than done. Your plan would unleash definite poverty and inflation in the country by way of increased price for petrol, diesel, electricity, medicines, food and everything else we import. However your plan to drive export is not guaranteed to succeed. So you would have given Nigerians 100% poverty, with 25% probability of success in your export drive. Also you wrongly assume that the people you give 3% loans to will use it for the purpose given. You should know that Nigerians outside government are just as crafty as those in government. If I receive N100mln at 3% to farm cassava that has some risk - the crop yield might not be as expected, there might be disease that ravages the crops, herdsmen could mutilate my farm etc. I might as well invest it in FGN bonds of 16% that have zero risk. All in all, its very unlikely that the gains from just cassava/ethanol will make up for the poverty unleashed on Nigerian by $/NGN rate officially going to 1700!! Overall, I agree with the principle that we need to identify key sectors of advantage for export focused industry. But your road map to getting there is where I have an issue. For now what Nigeria needs is stability in the exchange rate. Not necessarily that it appreciates or depreciates. If there is the confidence that in 6months, 12 months, 24 months the rate wont be much more that 10% up or down in either direction, then we can slowly but surely build our economy back. |

Politics / Re: Shell To Sell Nigeria Onshore Oil Business For $1.3 Billion by COMPAQ(m): 1:28pm On Jan 16 |
Kenochi: Story for the God's. This is beer parlour gist. The oil swaps were with oil trading companies such as Trafigura, Glencoe, Vitol etc. The Shells and Chevron and so on that operate in nigeria did not participate in the swaps. The main reason they are selling is Nigeria has lost control of the onshore oil and gas business with thieves and crooks taking over the Niger Delta. It has become impossible to operate. You produce 250,000 barrels of oil and only 100,000 gets to the terminal!! Does that make sense? 3 Likes |

thesicilian: Lol, my parents are both dead! We are too emotional in this part of the world. In Nigeria a 90year old would be in vegetative state on permanent bed rest, but the Nigerian will be entering debt to continue to keep the man alive. In Europe, in the same situation the Doctors will ask if you want to pull the plug and many will say yes. How can you ruin yourself trying to keep a 90 year old person alive!! if I had the resource of Michael Schumacher then fine! 1 Like |

Politics / Re: Seven Major Marketers Get Approval To Sell Dangote Fuel by COMPAQ(m): 8:50am On Jan 15 |
gadgetplanetng: Who told you Nigerian crude is cheap to produce? Its actually quite expensive. Let me tell you 3 things (amongst many that make our oil expensive to produce) 1. NDDC levvy - 3% of oil companies annual budget 2. Host community development Levy - 3% of preceeding year operating expenditure. 3. Insecurity - oil companies pay huge amounts per year to secure producing assets and staff who move in the Niger Delta region. 1 Like |

Mm2 has maintained its quality for over 10 years it's been privately managed, meanwhile if not for terminal 2 at mmia it would have been a disaster. 2 Likes |

mrvitalis: In the village it wouldn't change much. Even in the city it wont change as much as we think. I agree with you on that! We often make lazy comments like "if electricity is 24/7, the economy's problem is half solved!! Nothing could be further from the truth. It will have an impact no doubt, but companies will simply make more profit cos they are spending less on diesel and the owners will pocket the profits. Banks are amongst the heaviest consumers of diesel. Will they open more branches or necessarily employ more people because they have saved N5bln in diesel? Economic growth is very delicate and a combination of many things such as: 1. Basic infrastructure for good trade and productivity (quality and efficient ports, good roads, bridges, airports etc) 2. Sound legal system 3.Consistent policy 4. Skilled workforce (most Nigerians think we have skilled workforce, but we don't) 5. Tendency for innovation and entrepreneurship 6. Respect for rule of law 7. Cheap factors of production 8. Quality internet - can be a good enabler of services like call centers, support centers, remote work etc) 9. Right legislative backing for business to thrive 10. And many more I can't think of. 1 Like |

Klass99: The Shoprite has been looted twice! First was Xenephpbic protest, but that one wasn't really severe looting. In fact it was more of just vandalization of some of the infrastructure there. But the end SARS one was MASSIVE looting. As in, they broke into most of the shops there and carried away electronics etc. Lekki Circle mall was shut down for over 2 years because of this. It just reopened last year July or so. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Politics / Re: NERC To Sell Kaduna Electric Over N110 Billion Debt by COMPAQ(m): 12:04pm On Jan 09 |
U09ce: I agree with what you have said except the last part. Iv the average take home pay of a household is N50k, how are they using up to N20k electricity? My current bill is circa N30k, which is 420kwh of electricity and i have 43inch TV, i use split AC to sleep, use microwave, electric kettle, water heater, washing machine and dryer steady as needed without thinking. So if someone is so poor, what appliances do they have that is costing N20k in electricity? So its either people aren't as poor as you think ( I have seen DSTV and AC several times in batcha) or you are overestimating what a poor person should be using in electricity. 1 Like |
