PoliticsFlooding: Delta Demolishes Buildings Built On Waterways by comrodioodio001(op): 4:30am On Aug 08, 2023
Flooding: Delta demolishes buildings on waterways

Delta State Government, Monday, commenced demolition of buildings erected along waterways and causing flooding across the state in line with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's directive.

The demolition exercise started with the pulling down of parts of three buildings, including a yet-to-be-completed church structure and a storey building at Ugboroke, in Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.

The demolished parts of the buildings were occupying waterways believed to be responsible for the annual flooding of houses in the area.

Director-General, Special Duties, Governor's Office, Asaba, Mr Frank Omare, led the amphibious swam buggy to the area, amid security protection from soldiers drafted from the 3 Battalion, Nigerian Army, Effurun.

The demolition and dredging exercise, which started on Monday at Uvwie Local Government Area will move to Warri, Warri South Local Government Area, Udu, Ughelli and other flood-prone parts of the state.

Speaking to journalists on Monday during the demolition exercise at Ugboroke, Mr Omare, who had done similar job as Commissioner for Environment during the administration of Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, said he would follow the mandate given to him without discrimination, adding that seven heavy equipment are at work.

"One of the mandates given to me is to remove illegal structures all over the state; in every local government area. And this is just the beginning and we've given them over two months to ensure that those who had built on natural water ways remove their buildings, those who do not have approval plans they should remove their buildings. And they've deliberately refused.

"In Hgboroke, Uvwie Local Government Area, if there's rain for 10 minutes, everywhere will be flooded. The place is under water and we cannot continue to allow it.

"We're not here for individual interest but the general interest. We will not compromise.

"No sentiments. The falling away of the yellow leave is a warning to the green one. We've started and we're continuing. Times are hard, things are rough, but we must do the right thing.

"The law is law. We have about seven equipment scattered across Warri South and Uvwie local government areas. When we're done, we'd move to other local government. It's a warning to others.

"Nobody's building will be spared no matter who is involved. We will not compromise. This is the way to go. Forty per cent houses here have no soak-away system. Five metres to the drainage, the roads and canals must be adhered to.

"Ministry of land and survey urban renewal are all with me to ensure things are done properly. We're going to be very bold, and we're bold, we're going to be very focused and we're focused and we're going to ensure that nobody is victimised. We're paying so much money to carry out this exercise.

"Government bears the cost of all logistics to bring back sanity. Oborevwori is a street man. He knows the streets. We're ready for those who are ready for trouble. This is a warning to others.

"Any building that has approval please bring them. Whether they're wrongly approved, we'll take responsibility. That's why the ministries in charge are here. They'd tell me how they approved buildings build on waterways," he noted.

Meanwhile, one of the residents, whose father's building was affected, David Adu, expressed happiness that the annual flooding in the area will subside with the demolition and dredging of the canal.

"I'm happy the demolition is ongoing even though my father's house is affected. I only ask they allow us remove our items from the building before total demolition. They should ensure they strictly follow the master plan by bringing back the canal and roads encroached on by builders," he charged.

APPOINTMENTS: Delta Govt cautions against falling prey to scammers

Delta State Government, Monday, warned Deltans against falling prey to con artists, whose specialty is fooling the unwary public in order to obtain unfair and unjust financial favours under the guise of giving them appointments.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, who gave the warning for the second time in less than a month, said some criminal elements were using the names of the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon Johnson Erijo and his own name to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

He warned the populace, in a statement in Asaba, to beware of these phone numbers: "08023138247, 09025320424, 08023138247" or any other number the fraudsters may decide to use, purporting to be the Delta SSG, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor or any other top government appointee.

He maintained that the said phone numbers did not belong to any of the listed government appointees, but were being used by scammers to con people for money.

Sir Ahon, again, appealed to security agencies to take the issue seriously before people lose more of their hard-earned money to con artists.

The Government warned members of the public to be wary and not allow themselves to be duped by the fraudsters parading themselves as agents of the State Government the Secretary to the State Government, adding that the Government does not collect money to appoint people. It further frowned at citizens of the State failing victim and allowing criminals to defraud them of their hard-earned money.

"Let me urge you to continue to remain humble and loyal to your Speaker and members.

"Don't be carried away by power, don't assume that you are now a leader because you are now Deputy Speaker.

"So once again, I congratulate you for your victory and wish you greater success in your future endeavours," the Governor said.

In his remark, Hon. Akpowowo expressed appreciation to Governor Oborevwori and the party leadership for finding him worthy to serve as the Deputy Speaker as a first timer.

Vwaire Diaso: Oborevwori condoles family, NMA, calls for probe

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has sent his heart-felt condolences to the Diaso family and the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on the tragic and unfortunate passing of Dr Vwaire Diaso in Lagos.

Diaso, a medical doctor and native of Ewu Kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, died at the General Hospital, Lagos Island, when the elevator she used crashed from the 9th floor to the ground floor.

In a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori said that the tragic incident was avoidable if those saddled with the management of the hospital facilities were on top of their duty.

He urged the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the young and promising Dr Diaso with a view to avoiding future reoccurrence.

"On behalf of the Government and people of Delta, I commiserate with the family of Kennedy Diaso of Ewu Kingdom, the Urhobo nation, friends and colleagues of the deceased on the tragic death of their promising daughter, Vwaire.

"This incident is tragic, painful, grievous and a great loss not just to the family but to the entire nation and humanity.

"While we mourn her unfortunate and avoidable death, the hospital management failed in their duty to maintain facilities at the hospital which caused her untimely death.

"I therefore call on the Lagos State Government and Police authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident with a view to avoiding future reoccurrence.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues in this difficult time, even as we pray the good Lord Almighty to accept her soul and grant her eternal rest," Oborevwori said.

Fuel subsidy removal: Delta mulls investment in electric vehicles

Delta State Government, Thursday, said it may consider investment in electric vehicles for mass transportation to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on the citizens.

The State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori stated this shortly after inspection and test-drive of two electric vehicles presented by Ajaere Motors and Jet Motor Company at Government House, Asaba.

He said he was putting up a Committee to be headed by Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu to look into the economic viability and operational sustainability of electric vehicles in Nigeria.

"This is the first time I have the opportunity to drive electric vehicles and you can see that it's smooth, noiseless and comfortable, and with the way the price of fuel is going up electric vehicles are better at this time because everybody is trying to move away from fuel to save cost.

"The Electric vehicles (E.V) are cheaper; the only thing is that we are still studying this model and we are coming out with our own decision very shortly, to know whether to go in that direction, especially with the present hike in petrol price.

"Everybody is trying to go in that direction. It will also be economical and the good thing about this is that I am putting together a team headed by the Secretary to the State Government, to understudy this and see if it is something the state can do to support the transporters and reduce cost of transportation," he stated.

Also speaking, Chairman of Jet Motors, Chidi Ajaere said investing in electric vehicles was the way to go considering that the vehicles were eco-friendly and cheaper to manage.

He said future thinking mobility companies are investing in electric vehicles as the cost of transportation has become so high due to rising cost of fuel and maintenance.

Ajaere said: "The Federal Government is already taking the initiative of investing in electric vehicles. We have abundance of sun in Nigeria, so the idea for the Federal Government and the Delta State government is looking into building solar powered charging infrastructure.

"The two biggest cost drivers for transportation is cost of maintenance and cost of fueling but with electric vehicles you eliminate the cost of maintenance and the cost of petrol thereby reducing the cost of transportation by almost 80 percent.

"The life span of the battery is about eight to ten years and the bigger vehicles can do about 300km on a full charge; that's like moving from Lagos to Ibadan and back to Lagos or from Asaba to Warri and back to Asaba.

"All we need is just the Federal Government building solar charging stations along the way for these vehicles when travelling a longer distance so that when the passengers come down to ease themselves like they usually do, you can plug in your car to charge for some time before continuing your journey.

"In the rainy season, the solar charging infrastructures will have batteries that would store power for these vehicles to charge on gloomy days like this.

"Those stations can also be attached to CNG powered lines to help charge vehicles during the rainy season".

FUEL SUBSIDY: Stay in touch with our people, Oborevwori tells appointees

...swears in 9 Special Advisers

Delta State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, Thursday, told political appointees to stay connected with the people by visiting home regularly and assisting them in view of the economic hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy.

Oborevwori, who gave the charge while swearing-in 9-Special Advisers at Government House, Asaba, reminded the appointees that they were first politicians before becoming political appointees.

Those sworn-in were: Chief Edwin Uzor, Rt. Hon Solomon Funkekeme, Rt. Hon Basil Ganagana, Chief Tony Anechi and Chief Mrs Eunice Anirah.

Others include; Chief Mrs Shimite Bello; Mr Griftson Omatsuli; Olorogun Jaro Egbo and Chief Anthony Ofoni.

The Governor said: "This is especially important in the current harsh economic environment. With the removal of fuel subsidy and the subsequent hike in petrol prices, coupled with the free fall of the naira against the dollar, many families are struggling to make ends meet.

"Let us endeavour to be our brother’s keeper. We should give our people hope and mitigate their suffering by doing the best we can to assist the poor and vulnerable with the little that we have.

"We may not be able to solve everybody’s problem, but we can always start somewhere. That way, we will be living up to our calling as public servants".

Governor Oborevwori charged the newly appointed Special Advisers in the State to find creative solutions to the social challenges bedeviling the people and urged them to study the strategic thrust of his administration's policy agenda.

He said that the appointees possessed track records of performance, service, loyalty, and excellent leadership qualities and urged them to continue on same path of hardwork, loyalty, and commitment that earned them the recognition.

"We have just witnessed the swearing-in of 9 Special Advisers, in accordance with section 196 (4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as altered).

"Special Advisers play an important role in our current democratic dispensation. They are selected for their specific policy expertise, maturity, and wisdom required to navigate the layers of bureaucracy in order to deliver on the administration’s policy direction.

"Hence, they must be intellectually sound, politically savvy, and ethically above board. As you assume office, your first assignment is to acquaint yourself with the strategic thrust of the MORE Agenda.

"It is imperative that you carefully study it for you to be able to discharge your duties and responsibilities effectively. I expect fresh, practical, and measurable ideas and programme initiatives from you in line with the MORE Agenda.

"This administration is poised to sustain and expand the various youth entrepreneurship programmes, while investing massively in infrastructural renewal.

"I trust that you will commit yourselves to finding creative solutions to the recurring problems of youth unemployment and restiveness, cybercrime, poor environmental sanitation, insecurity, and the suspicion and distrust that breed inter-ethnic feuds in our communities," he said.

Responding on behalf of the appointees, Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon thanked Governor Oborevwori for finding them worthy to be appointed.

He assured the Governor of their unalloyed loyalty and commitment to his administration's M.O.R.E Agenda, aimed at advancing Delta.

We'll be fair, just in distribution of projects, Oborevwori reassures Deltans

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, yesterday, reassured Deltans that his administration would be fair and just in the distribution of infrastructural development projects and political appointments in the state.

Oborevwori who was speaking at a public presentation of a book on Senator Ifeanyi Okowa's stewardship titled; "Hope and Fulfilment" in Asaba, said all parts of the state would be adequately carried along in his M.O.R.E Agenda for Deltans.

He held that his administration would not only consolidate on the achievements recorded by the Senator Okowa led administration in the state but would do more for Deltans and residents of the state.

While saying that more appointments would be made in due course, the governor enjoined those who have not been given appointment not to despair, adding that they should continue to work with the state government in order to expand the frontiers of sustainable development in the state.

According to him, some of the Commissioners designate are people with vast wealth of experience in public life and the younger ones, adding that those with immense wealth of experience were expected to mentor the younger ones in the discharge of their duties.

He applauded the authors for their painstaking research and efforts in putting together, the book which chronicled the massive developmental strides of the Senator Okowa led administration in the state, even as he commended Okowa for his outstanding accomplishments in the governance of the state for eight years.

"We shall be fair and just in the distribution of infrastructural development projects and political appointments across the state.

"This administration will not only consolidate on the legacies of the Senator Ifeanyi Okowa led administration, we shall improve on them (legacies) and do more for Deltans.

In his remarks, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa who expressed appreciation to the authors of the book written in his honour, thanked Deltans for the cooperation given to his administration which, he said, enabled it to succeed.

Okowa pointed out that the success story of his administration was made possible by a combination of the collective efforts of the people that worked with him and the cooperation of Deltans.

"I am actually very honoured to speak at this event. I am very happy that we have started mentoring our youths and l thank our Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for being part of the mentorship.

"When you look at the list of Commissioners designate, you will realise that there are about 10 people who are less than 40 years of age on the list.

"We give all Glory to God and we thank all Deltans for their sustained cooperation over the years. We have been able to create real hope in the heart of our youths through the various youths friendly policies and programmes of the state government," Okowa said.

Reviewing the book at the ceremony chaired by Vice Chancellor of the Delta State University, Abraka, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga, the book reviewer, Prof. Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri, said 'Hope and Fulfilment' was a compendium that chronicled the landmark achievements of the Okowa led administration in the state.

While applauding authors of the book for their dedication and commitment in writing the book, Prof. Ufuophu-Biri who is the Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, said; "the book is a must read for everybody."

In their separate goodwill messages, Chief Eze Nnajiofor, Charles Aniagwu, Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, Fidelis Tilije, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, Prof. Sam Oyovbaire and Rt Hon Arthur Akpowowo, described Okowa as a good leader who had impacted positively on the lives of the people in the state and beyond.

While commending authors of the book for chronicling and documenting the milestones of the Senator Okowa's eight years administration in the state, they noted that he (Okowa) had turned boys into men, adding that he made youths to become entrepreneurs and built bridges across communities.

Earlier in his welcome address, one of the authors, Mr. Olisa Ifeajika, said the book chronicled the massive infrastructural and human capital development achievements of the Okowa led administration in the state, adding that it was put together to imortalise the phenomenal accomplishments of Senator Okowa in the eight years of his administration.

The book was written by Mr. Olisa Ifeajika, Frank Igwebueze, Sunny Ogefere, Chukwudi Abiandu, Pius Mordi, Felix Ofou, Nelson Egware and Mr. Kingsley Kwubosu.

Ukodhiko as Urhobonation Over Charles Obule’s Death

By Ajiri-Oghene Joseph Oreh

Member representing Isoko Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Jonathan Ajirioghene Ukodhiko has condoled the Obule family of Sapele and the people of Urhobonation on the death of legal luminary, businessmogul and politician, Chief Charles Obule.

Obule, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, reportedly died on Tuesday after a brief illness.

In a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, Ukodhiko expressed shock over Obule’s death, describing it as irreparable loss not only to his immediate family, the Urhobonation but Delta at large.

He stated that, “the late Charles Obule was a versatile lawyer, prominent businessman and astute investor and a notable politician who commendably combined a Pan-Deltan disposition and an Urhobo patriotism.

“He was a humanist who epitomized humility and compassion. Chief Obule had a pedigree for service, and he was committed to the development of the Urhobo ethnic nationality of Delta State.”

The Isoko federal lawmaker recalled the late Chief Obule’s generous contributions to the Urhobo Unity Hall at Uvwiamuge-Agbarho in 2007, the Mosogar Civic Centre, and several other projects and programmes of the Urhobo.

“He was a kind and generous giver who used his Obule Group of Schools, and Medical Centre to subsidize education, healthcare delivery, and other services to the people of Sapele and the Urhobonation.

“On behalf of the people of Isoko Federal Constituency, I commiserate with the Obule family of Sapele and the entire Urhobonation on the demise of their illustrious son, Olorogun (Barr.) Charles Ufuoma Obule, the Erhi of Okpe Kingdom.

“As Deltans, particularly we the people of Isokonation, are proud of Olorogun Charles Obule’s phenomenal achievements in business, law, health, education, politics, and we appreciate his philanthropic gestures.

“Chief Obule was a pragmatic leader of our party, the PDP in State, and we recognize his immeasurable contributions to the unity, advancement, and victories of the PDP in Sapele Local Government Area.

“I want you all to take solace in the fact that Olorogun Charles Obule lived a life of service and dedication. And it is our prayer God comforts and grant you all the courage to bear the loss even as we pray for the repose of his soul.” Ukodhiko added

PoliticsReps Adopt Ukodhiko's Motion Compelling Oil And Gas Coys To Provide Electricity by comrodioodio001(op): 2:48pm On Jul 25, 2023
Reps adopt Ukodhiko's motion compelling oil and gas coys to provide electricity for Isoko communities

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Federal Ministries of Power, Petroleum Resources and other relevant Agencies to compel all Oil and Gas companies engaged in flaring gas within the Isoko North and South Federal Constituency as a matter of urgency to convert gas flared converted into electricity for the benefit of the host communities in compliance with the PIA Act and the deadline for the stoppage of gas flaring in Nigeria.

The House also mandates the Committee on Legislative Compliance when constituted to ensure the implementation of the motion.

The House made the call at plenary following the unanimous adoption moved by member representing Isoko North/South Federal Constituency, Hon. Jonathan Ukodhiko and seconded by member representing Ibarapa North, Ibarapa Central Federal Constituency, Hon. (Dr) Anthony Adebayo Adekpoju from Oyo State.

In the motion titled "Need to Compel Oil and Gas Companies to Stop Gas Flaring and Convert same to provide 24-hour Electricity to Isoko Communities and Environs", Ukodhiko called on the House to direct relevant Federal Government Ministries and agencies to enforce the implementation of the prayers in the motion to convert gas flared to consummable electricity for the communities to curb pollution, drive economic development, prevent environmental hazards, observing that the volume of gas being flared has devasting effects on the lives and properties of the Isoko people and Deltans.

He said inspite of the huge contributions made by the Isoko Host Communities to the oil and gas wealth of the nation with its attendant environmental and health hazards, Isoko Federal Constituency has been in a total blackout without electricity that can be easily tapped from the wasted gas resources.

Ukodhiko said the motion had become imperative especially as staff of these International Oil Companies and other oil and production companies working in Isoko land live in extravagant comfort with 24 hours electricity generated internally for operational bases and residential areas while the host communities and their environs live in squalor, watching helplessly the opulent lifestyle of the companies with their only offence being host communities to their oppressors- the oil companies.

Expressing concern at the deliberate refusal by the oil and gas companies and the successive administrations to permanently tackle the infrastructural deficit like electricity which could have been easily generated from the wasted gases have over the years, he explained this made Isoko land as well as other communities in the Niger Delta become a hot bed region for protests and agitations that have sometimes crippled the economy and loss of precious human lives.

While an amendment, raised by Babajide Benson (Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Lagos), requested the need to set up investigative hearing why gas is flared instead of it being converted to electricity.

Olumide Osoba Abeokuta North/ Obafemi- Owode/Odeda Federal Constituency claims it was a duplication of a previous motion into gas flaring

But the Speaker, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, in a swift response, clearly stated that the motion moved by Hon. Ukodhiko was a very serious issue specific to the Isoko Federal Constituency and its communities.

When Hon. Ukodhiko was asked by the Speaker if he would stand down and go along with the previous adhoc committee set up on gas flaring, Hon. Ukodhiko said it does not stop the adhoc committee from carrying out its assignment adding that the matter on the motion directly affects his constituents whom he represents, and so, therefore, standing it down will be injustice to the Isoko community.

The House adopted the motion with an amendment to include Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency and referred the matter to the Committee on Legislative Compliance, in addition to Gas, Power and Environment Committee for compliance and implementation.

PoliticsEXCLUSIVE: Delta Rep Outlines Agenda To Reduce Poverty, Promote Free Enterprise by comrodioodio001(op): 6:32am On Jul 25, 2023
EXCLUSIVE: Delta Rep outlines agenda to reduce poverty, promote free enterprise

Honourable Ukodhiko Jonathan Ajirioghene representing Isoko South/Isoko North Federal Constituency of Delta State in the Tenth House of Representatives sits with our National Assembly Lead, Elizabeth Atime to discuss his legislative agenda, constituency projects and his activities thus far...

As the 10th National Assembly settles down for business, expectations are high among their constituents that the parliament would live up to its responsibilities in the three core areas of lawmaking, oversight and representation.

In the face of biting hardship currently ravaging the country following the removal of petrol subsidy, citizens are keen on the contributions of their representatives towards ameliorating the effects of the policy.

In this very insightful interview, the lawmaker representing Isoko South/Isoko West Federal Constituency of Delta State, Rep. Ukodhiko Jonathan Ajirioghene highlighted his legislative agenda focused on tackling poverty and job creation through the sponsorship of motions and bills, amongst other pertinent issues. The Delta lawmaker also promised to engage with constituents every step of the way to ensure that they fully participate in his legislative roadmap. Read the interview below:

1. Congratulations, sir, for emerging as a member of the 10th National Assembly

Thank you.

2. Before we settle into the main interview, what one lesson about public service would you say brought you to this level?

What prompted me to this place is service to humanity. All my life, I have been rendering service to humanity, and I know that with quality representation of my people through the government, I will be able to expand more to the services. I will be delivering to humanity, and that’s what I intend to do.

3. Quickly tell us about your Legislative interests and Legislative Agenda for your constituents in Delta State and on the national level

My agenda for my people is to reduce the level of poverty in the state as much as possible and to make sure that we create work for our people for a better livelihood.

On the national level, poverty is a big problem in the country and we will do our best to pursue and support the executive to give a purposeful administration in the country, by creating laws that will create jobs for our people to be able to work and reduce poverty

4. In the light of this interest, law making is one of your core functions as a legislator as you already know, what is that one bill that you will be sponsoring in this Assembly?

First and foremost, I will continue to sponsor bills that will promote free enterprise which will promote businesses. (This is) because when businesses are promoted, people will be able to have gainful employment. I will also work on bills that improve the infrastructural and educational system to improve the lives of women and the girl girl child.

5. Upon your resumption for the first week of the House, you made a notable mark when your motion on the need to rehabilitate the Benin-Warri Road was adopted by the House. Why was this an important mission to you?

You know that the Benin-Warri Road is a very worrying critical road in the country. It connects both South West which Lagos is situated in; which is (also) the economic state in the country. It also links the North to the South South, which is very critical and needs to be fixed and I feel that we should let the government know the condition of the road (for it) to be worked on.

6. Let’s talk oversight, you were recently appointed into an Ad-hoc Committee of the House to investigate the TETFund. What has being your experience thus far, working in the committee?

As you know, the committee has just been inaugurated not quite long, and the only meeting we’ve had so far is the inaugural meeting. At the meeting, the agenda of the Committee was spelt out and various assignments were given to some of us, which we have commenced work on.

We have sent out letters to the Ministries involved in the TETFund and we hope that very soon, before the end of the week we will receive feedback, so we can commence our work as soon as possible.

7. In the area of representation what projects are your constituents expecting you to deliver on, across Isoko North and South?

Like I said before, there are a lot of expectations from our people in terms of infrastructure, education, poverty reduction to name a few, and we will be attending to these needs. As soon as we get settled in, those are some of the things we will tackle immediately.

8. How will you ensure that this project are successfully executed? Are you going to be involving the constituents or you would want to do everything yourself?

The reality is that we will get the constituents involved, just like we promised during the campaign, we said it will be inclusive and whatever constituency project that we will execute will be owned by the people and it will be on a needs basis. Because there’s no way that we will go to any community to execute projects that are not needed by the constituents.

Currently, we are carrying out the needs assessment and it will be based on what they need that we will work on. Immediately we are able to put that project as a constituency project, we will get them involved and they will execute the project and I believe with inclusiveness, everybody will be happy with what we will do.

9. On a lighter note, when you are not working as an Honorable member what do you do to relax?

Most of the time I read, and I am a pastor in a church. Most times, I focus on studying the Bible, in order to feed my congregation with the words of God. Apart from that, I do outdoor activities like swimming, and watching football

10. Since you are a fan of football, what club do you support both national and international?

The only club in the world, Manchester United; so (for) every other club, they are not existing

11. So who is your favorite player in the Manchester United football club?
Rashford and other great players in the team

12. The Isoko People are from the oil and gas rich Niger Delta, yet it seems development has eluded the people. Do you have any plans to change this narrative?

If you look at the whole Niger Delta, it is not only peculiar to the Isoko people alone that they are mal-represented.

I am representing the Isoko People, Delta State and the Niger Delta as a whole, and Nigeria as a whole. And as we all know, most of the oil producing places including Isoko, they have been producing this wealth without being partakers of the wealth. So, we are going to pursue motions and bills that will continue to empower our people in order to participate in the oil industry. At the same time, in order for them to benefit from the natural resources that God has given to them.

There are a lot of ways that we are going to do that; by engaging the government, the oil companies, and engaging the communities. (This is) because most times when the oil company/government wants to carry out some certain things, certain people in the community will not allow them to do that. So, we are going to get everyone involved to make sure our people enjoy the dividend of the natural resources of the country to the Isoko, Niger Delta and every place oil is produced.

“…we are going to pursue motions and bills that will continue to empower our people in order to participate in the oil industry. At the same time, in order for them to benefit from the natural resources that God has given to them.”

13. Looking back at the 2023 general elections, do you think we have made progress, and particularly about your party. the PDP (People’s Democratic Party) appears to be in a far less vibrant state currently. Do you think the party will survive this electoral cycle?

We are an opposition party, and (in) every opposition party in the world, you will note that there are ups and downs. You know, we not being in power today, does not mean we will not be in power tomorrow.

So, I believe that PDP will come out stronger and more united. We will go back to the drawing board and carry out our assessments to know where we got it wrong, and how to improve our electoral fortune. And with the reform in the electoral system, that is why some of us lawmakers are going to improve on the electoral system. (This is) because the more transparent the system becomes, the more power is given to the people.

We believe that when power is taken to the people, the PDP will be able to come back to power because we have good policies and programmes that will take this country to a higher height.

14. So with the little you know about our organisation; OrderPaper, what are your thoughts about our work?

I think it is the best that can happen to the National Assembly, and it is a good thing, because wherever there is lack of standard of measurement in any society, or any system, I can bet you that the system will not try to function well.

I strongly believe and commend the good work of OrderPaper, and to make sure especially in respect to the aspect of misconception about the National Assembly. Without OrderPaper putting it out there for people to know what the National Assembly is doing, then people will continue to have a wrong perception of the National Assembly. With the work of OrderPaper, it will take the National Assembly to a level that Nigerians will appreciate.

15. You are stepping into very big shoes of Honourable Leo Ogor who played a huge role here for five terms. Here at the National Assembly, he gave the ruling party a good run for their money. So how will you ensure that you will fill in that gap?

You have said it all, I’m stepping into very big shoes and my constituency, especially constituents are expecting a lot and based on the performance of Rt Hon Leo Ogor.

I strongly believe that as a new member, I will try my best to make sure that I fulfill the aspirations of the people and also contribute my own quota that at the end of the day we will be better than the latter because every father prays and he prayed for me that he hopes I will do better than him. Like every parent does for their children and God’s willing, it will happen.

16. Finally, with the House going on recess shortly, what do you plan to achieve this period?

During this period I will go back to my constituency and hold a lot of townhall meetings. (I will) discuss and give feedback to my constituents on how far I’ve gone because it’s about giving out.

Feedback will be given to them from time to time on what we have done and intend to do and also find out their needs and wants, challenges also. So when the house resumes, I will take it up with the national stage. Thank you very much.

“(OrderPaper Nigeria) is the best that can happen to the National Assembly, and it is a good thing, because wherever there is lack of standard of measurement in any society, or any system, I can bet you that the system will not try to function well.”

Expand tax net to informal sector, Oborevwori tasks DBIR

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Friday, urged the State Board of Internal Revenue Service to expand the State tax net by bringing in more businesses in the informal sector.

He gave the charge during the inauguration of the Chairman and Executive Directors of the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue, headed by Hon. Solomon Ighrakpata as Chairman.

Others are Dr Frank Nwugo, Executive Director, Operations; Mr. Kelly Oghenekevwe, Executive Director, Finance and Administration; Mr. Collins Iwebunor, Executive Director, ICT and Hon. Mrs Orezi Esievo, Director, Legal Services.

While congratulating the members of the new Board on their appointment, he expressed optimism that they would perform creditably with the rich blend of experts, technocrats and seasoned administrators.

He commended the previous Board, headed by the current Deputy Governor of the State, Sir Monday Onyeme for their great impact in revenue generation and charged the new Board to surpass the achievements of the previous board in line with the administration’s M.O.R.E. Agenda.

He remarked that the Board does not necessarily need to introduce new taxes to improve it's internal revenue generating capacity.

Oborevwori said: "Often, when new taxes are introduced, it is imposed on the same people and businesses already captured in the tax net, which often leads to over taxation and the attendant frustration, anger, and resentment.

"What is required is to expand the tax net in such a manner that the informal sector would be adequately covered.

"It is therefore, incumbent on the Board to devise creative ways to drag as many people as possible from the informal sector into the tax net.

"To do this successfully, it is exigent for the Board to embark on elaborate and sustained enlightenment and awareness campaigns.

"Our people need to know and understand the importance of paying tax. Paying taxes is not just a civic responsibility, it is constitutionally binding on every Nigerian as enshrined in Section 24 (f) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as altered)".

He urged the Board to enlist the support and cooperation of various trade associations, professional bodies, business groups, cooperatives, and the traditional institutions in reaching out to the informal sector.

"Our people are generally understanding and cooperative; I believe once they are made to see reason, they would gladly and willingly comply with their obligations to the Government.

"Proper monitoring and evaluation are also critical for the Board to achieve its goals by ensuring that revenue collection officers and agents are strictly monitored to plug leakages and curb misappropriation," he said.

He added that his administration remains committed to the timeless principles of transparency, accountability, and judicious allocation of resources.

"Out of the estimated N95 billion IGR in the 2023 fiscal year, N58.56b has been generated as at the end of June. This is more than half the projected revenue.

"With the current trend, I expect you to exceed the target for the year. That is one way to justify the confidence that has been reposed in you with this appointment.

"I wish to reassure Deltans that this administration will account for every kobo that accrues to it by ensuring that they are well spent on meaningful development projects that will positively impact on the living conditions of our people," Oborevwori stated.

Responding, Hon. Ighrakpata thanked Governor Oborevwori for finding them worthy to serve, assuring that they would work assiduously to deliver on set targets.

The late Pa Obowomano, a great farmer, devout Christian and community leader departed on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at the age of 81.

In a condolence message contained in a statement on Friday, Ukodhiko said that, “Pa Obowomano’s death was a great loss not only to his immediate family of Okogbo community in Irri Kingdom, but the entire Isoko nation.”

He said, “Pa Obowomano was a man with a large heart and a palpably generous spirit. Papa depicted pride, dignity, and nobility of mind that are worthy of emulation by all and sundry.

“He was known as a man of strong faith with an open-minded heart who was friendly and loving to his family, friends, and community in an exemplary way. His loyalty to worthy causes was notable.

Hon. Ukodhiko discribed him as: “A great husband, and a loving father, and it is to his credit he gave birth to children whom he brought up rightly to hold their own and, as a result leave an imperishable legacy.

“Pa Obowomano, a disciplinarian, inculcated strong moral values in his children as evident in the impeccable character of Hon Bino, his humble son and member representing Isoko South Constituency 1 in the Delta State House of Assembly.”

How poverty reduction can improve nation's security - Ukodhiko

The Member Representing Isoko North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Jonathan Ukodhiko has said that winning the war against poverty would help in improving the nation's security architecture.

Speaking on "The Gavel" on Channels Television on Saturday night, Ukodhiko said as the representative of his people in the National Assembly, he would pursue programmes that could lead to poverty reduction in his constituency.

He remarked that once farmers were guaranteed security they would have the confidence to go to farm and once there is food for the family insecurity would be reduced to the barest minimum.

According to him, "One of the problems we are having is the high rate of poverty which is caused by high rate of unemployment.

"We have so many graduates that are without jobs and so many children out of school without jobs despite having oil producing companies operating all over the place but they don't give them jobs.

"They employ people from other places and at the end of the day the people live in poverty because the people are not conversant with how to generate wealth.

"So as the people's representative, we will come out with programmes on wealth creation and as an agrarian community we will provide improved seedlings and support the average farmers with high yield cassava stems for them.

"We will also collaborate with security agencies to provide security for the farmers because if the farmers are not guaranteed their security they will not be able to go to the farm.

"Once we are able to provide them with security we will be able to reduce poverty in our communities and when you reduce poverty, you will improve security," he said.

The federal lawmaker said he would not sit down in Abuja but would be going home often to meet with his constituents for the purpose of providing solutions to their challenges.

"We are not going to operate like lawmakers based in Abuja every time. We are going to be going home from time to time to engage with our people to interface with them and know what their needs are.

"Isoko is an ethnic group that is one of the highest onshore oil producing area in this country and based on that we will engage them through townhall meetings from community to community.

"It is easier for us to carryout because the communities are made up of clans so we will engage them on clan-basis.

"We will engage them through various stakeholders like the Presidents-General, community leaders, church leaders and the opinion leaders," Ukodhiko stated.

"On behalf of the Government and people of Delta, I commiserate with the family of Fidelis Omorhiakogbe on the tragic death of their two-year-old son, Ivan, and injury to his younger sibling, Eromonsele.

Court exonerates Ukodhiko, nullifies sealing of assets

Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Wednesday set aside Mareva order previously granted to seal the property and assets belonging to Member Representing Isoko North/South Federal Constituency, Hon. Jonathan Ukodhiko.

The court had on May 19, 2023, through suit No: FHC/PH/CS/88/2023, ordered the sealing of his Company's office in Port Harcourt and his Isoko country home at Erawah-Owhe, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, over a business transaction involving Joeny Holdings Limited, an oil and gas conglomerate he once had interest in.

But delivering judgment on the matter, Justice Dalyop Pam upheld the preliminary objection of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Respondents, adding that the Federal High Court had no jurisdiction to entertain the suit.

The court also held that the EFCC had no business in debt recovery, which was the basis of the Applicants' petition and suit and therefore set aside the Order of the Honourable Court made on the 19th of May, 2023.

Counsel to Ukodhiko, Emeka Etiaba SAN had told the court that his client resigned from the Company since 2021 and therefore had no correlation with the business transaction.

Reacting to the ruling, Ukodhiko commended the court for doing justice on the matter, adding that the malicious sealing of his property was politically motivated.

He said that over the years, he had kept clean records as a successful businessman and would not be involved in any act capable of undermining the privileged position he occupies in the National Assembly.

He thanked God, his supporters and the people of Isoko nation for their support and understanding, assuring that he would remain focused in delivering on the people's mandate.

Clark’s attacks on Okowa, avoidable, unnecessary - Delta youth leaders

Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders have described the attacks of elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark on immediate past Governor of the state, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa as avoidable and unnecessary.

The youth leaders told the monarchs they were at the secretariat to seek their intervention in curtailing the seeming inter ethnic feud that could emanate from the said attacks on the ex-Governor.

According to Agbateyiniro, as youth leaders we cannot sit and watch things go wrong in our dear state especially as we see the former Governor as our role model because he paved way for youths to grow in the state.

"We view our foremost leader, Chief Clark’s attacks and petition against Okowa as avoidable and unnecessary media trial of the former Governor and we urge the Council to intervene," Agbateyiniro stated.

Responding, Chairman Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers and Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, HRM Maj. Gen. Felix Mujakperuo, Orhue I, thanked the youth leaders for showing concern and for following the path of peace.

He said the Council will consider their request and communicate their resolution to the youth leaders.
