I work from home providing digital marketing and start-up consultancy services for clients.

Power is relatively stable in the part of Lagos where I live (at least up to 12 hours daily), although on some days it can be very bad.

I have an inverter which batteries packed up a while ago and a 2.5kva generator that I refused to unbox primarily because of the noise and the unneeded attention it is bound to draw whenever it is powered.

To meet my daily work deadlines, I upgraded my laptop to a brand new Mac Air. The battery life is 12 hours of minimal use and at least 9 hours of heavy usage. The Swift Internet mifi I use once fully charged can go at least 8 hours. My smartphone (Samsung s8) can go for 8 - 12 hours depending on usage. I have a Nokia feature phone (which is my business line) that does up to 4 days when fully charged. Most times before the battery of my devices drops to 50%, electricity would have been restored and then I can charge my gadgets.

Sometimes, when the work volume is very much, I work from the client offices and at other times, from a co-working space in Opebi just to meet deadlines.
TravelRe: Canada Visit/tourist Visa Discussion. by ConnectMee: 9:22am On Mar 01, 2019
From my little experience, all those highlighted countries are not really regarded as 'travel experience'. Reasons being that you don't go through stringent conditions to obtain their visas. I stand corrected though.
timigreene:
This still baffles me, why will ur application be denied after traveling to the above highlighted countries. What other travel history do they need?

Hello guys! I just walked through immigration in Jo'burg. Thanks to everyone who assisted with information from application to when visa was eventually granted. For the records, I flew Kenya Airways. Had no issues whatsoever because of the airline I flew with grin grin. The only scare was when the stern immigration officer asked for my accommodation reservations and i presented a screen-munched receipt of my Airbnb payment in Cape Town.

Dude wasn't satisfied. He said I should have a printout but I told him I didn't have time to print out one, next thing I heard was step aside on the red line. I told him no. Then proceeded to my mail and show him the actual receipt in my mail box. He relaxed, stamped my passport and welcomed me to SA. Unfortunately, another Nigerian guy before me was marched to another office. I don't know why but the immigration officer was saying something about his story not adding up. I hope they don't send him back home.

Another thing I experienced was with police almost immediately after immigration. I approached them to ask where I can buy a ticket to Cape Town. They requested my passport which I showed them. Next, they were asking for my hotel reservation. Again, i showed them my Airbnb receipt. Again, they said no, that I should have a printout. I asked them if they would like to call the landlord and verify. They said no, they are taking me to an office from where I'd likely be deported. We argued back and forth for almost 10 minutes. Eventually, they asked for $40 for coffee before they'd allow me go. I said all i can give is $10.

I thought I gave the corrupt cop $10 only to get to the ticket booth and discovered I actually gave him a $100 bill. Guys, I was mad. Went back to look for the officer, accompanied by a female airport staff that I narrated the incident to. Luckily, I found him, dude was like any problem, i told him i gave him $100 instead of $10. He feigned ignorance and quietly took me to a corner where he produce my money grin. Man, i was just glad!

Awaiting my flight to Cape Town, I hope I enjoy my stay!

Hi. I am also going to Cape Town in February and from your explanation, I'm beginning to consider Kenya Airways so as to be able to spend few days in Nairobi. Can you put me through in booking the ticket? Or can I PM you?
Queenbeloveth:
Honestly, u re not in the best position to advise him. Traveling to Ghana just to catch up with flight to SA is a waste of time and money. Kenya airways is very cheap and he can transit Kenya. I'm going to SA by February with Kenya airways and I will stop at Kenya to spend like a week there, also visit Tanzania by road from Kenya before going to SA. My booking is just $467 for my return ticket despite spending s week at Kenya. The last time I flew Kenya, I can say the airline is very okay.

Finally got to pick my visa today at VFS Global office in Lagos. Got a mail last Friday saying the processed application is ready for collection. Got there around 8 a.m. but waited till 10 a.m when they let in those for collection. Unlike the crowd I saw on the day of application, today was different. The place was scanty though and in less than 15 minutes, i was called and given my passport with the visa in it. Thanks everyone for your useful contributions on this thread. It helped greatly for a first time applicant like me. Happy holidays y'all!
CareerHow To Spike Ticket Sales With Affiliate Programs by ConnectMee(op): 10:01am On Jul 18, 2018
Contrary to insinuations, affiliate programs are not the exclusive purview of the eCommerce industry.

Smart events and ticketing businesses are utilizing affiliate programs to achieve more than just brand awareness. Its performance-based, cost-effectiveness has made this marketing channel the darling of small businesses string on little or no marketing budget.

With many events coming up across the major capital cities in Nigeria, events planners and ticketing startups can leverage on this channel to quickly expand their reach to target audience, and acquire new customers for their concerts, conferences and training.

So how can event planners and events hosting organizations with little or no marketing budget leverage on affiliate programs to spike revenue from ticket sales?

By setting up affiliate programs, event startups can create strategic partnership that will reward attendees to their events with a percentage commission for every ticket sold through them.

To achieve this, events-oriented businesses will need to create specific affiliate links which customers and attendees can promote via their blogs social media channels or via email marketing.

With these affiliate links, event promoters will be able to monitor the progress and earnings associated with their specific promotions.

CareerWhen Email Marketing Is Done Right. The Sportsdirect Example by ConnectMee(op): 11:47am On Jul 15, 2018
I learnt a new one today in Email Marketing.

Feeling down? Enjoy an extra 20% Off Everything On Our App”, reads the subject line from the latest newsletter I received from SportsDirect.

SportsDirect.com is one of UK’s biggest sports retailer. Yours truly enjoy shopping on the platform because of the affordability and quality of its products. (Now, I am not advertising for the brand.)

So what makes this newsletter, particularly the subject line very interesting?

Football faithful following the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia must have watched England’s hurtful defeat in the hands of Croatia last night. Knowing fully well how devoted English fans are to the game and their team, the heartbreak from yesterday’s painful loss was evident not just in England but throughout the United Kingdom as portrayed in their media.

Since we all have different ways we react to sad emotions (I personally indulge in binge shopping especially when I can afford it), the brand chooses to offer ‘succour’ to their customers by offering generous discounts on its products.

Gauging the feeling of the nation, the eggheads in SportsDirect’s Marketing department specifically latched on to the loss of the match to Croatia to ‘patriotically’ soothe the pain of its grieving British customers; creatively increase its mobile app download rate and profitably take more of its products off the shelf.

This is not the first time SportsDirect is showcasing its marketing prowess. As spontaneous as that ‘Feeling down?’ newsletter looks, I dare say that the brand had everything planned in advance.

Prior to England’s defeat last night, SportsDirect.com was going to give out free FA official t-shirts to its customers if England had won the World Cup. Like the “20% Off Everything On Our App” newsletter, the offer was made available only to customers that downloaded and registered on its mobile app.

Football (the World Cup) may not be coming home to England just yet but SportsDirect scores a hat-trick with its email marketing campaign.

CareerWhat Type Of Leader Is Konga's Founder, Sim Shagaya? by ConnectMee(op): 1:57pm On Jun 17, 2018
September 2012. The presser was going on smoothly until I almost blew it.

“Considering the very high mortality rate of digital startups in Nigeria, what assurance do you have that Konga.com will be around in the next five years?” I fired my only question at Sim Shagaya, Founder and first CEO of Konga Online Shopping Mall.

The room went quiet. Accusing stares mostly from other journos were directed at me. Few looked at me in admiration. I sat unperturbed.

Sim paused a few seconds. Then very calmly answered, “Honestly, I don’t know.” Perhaps in an afterthought, he added, “We have a great team behind this project and we are ready to give it all it takes. By God’s grace, we hope to be around beyond the next five years.”

June 2015. I sat almost two hours at the ground floor office reception of SUM House, Yaba, Lagos, waiting for the last stage job interview with Sim Shagaya.

As I rode the elevator to the last floor of the four-storey building where he had his office, I silently prayed he did not recollect my face and my seemingly annoying question from the pool of journalists and brand writers he addressed at a press conference three years earlier.

Finally, I was ushered into his presence. He apologized first for keeping me waiting, adding that he has been on a Skype call all day.

“Oh, you were at Ringier!” His face suddenly lit up as he scanned a hard copy of my resume given to him by an assistant.

“Yes, sir.”

“So what was your biggest challenge at Ringier?”

I singled out a not so user-friendly email marketing software I had challenges with at Ringier and detailed how I struggled using it.

”So do you have any questions for me”, he asked.

”Considering the success you have built with this brand in almost three years, would you say Konga has arrived and what plans do you have for the future of the company especially within the next five years?”

The big man looked directly at me, smiled and answered. ”I foresee Konga being the engine of commerce in Africa in the next few years. We could diversify into digital media, television, you never can tell. Another thing, five years from now I may not be here. Perhaps Konga will be under a new leadership.”

”Noted sir,” I said.

The last sentence was perhaps a subtle hint at his exit strategy.

His next question jolted me. “So when are you joining us?

“In two weeks time, sir.”

The whole interview was less than three minutes. The shortest I ever had.

As I took my leave, almost halfway through the door, he suddenly said:

“Don’t burn bridges.”

I smiled and thanked him.

Pragmatic, visionary, brutally honest, fair, very considerate, hardworking, influential, a go-getter and team leader; these are the qualities I would ascribe to Sim.

Sim Shagaya was the type of leader you will love to work selflessly with and win with.

Beyond giving us erstwhile staff jobs via Konga.com, he made us see possibilities and opened up the opportunities to excel in a new and exciting industry.

For most business owners, customers come first and this often at the detriment of their staff well-being but with Sim it was different. He did not sacrifice his staff’s welfare for the customers’ naira.

The story was told of how he refused to move the company to the Island despite the fact that he lives there but rather have it situated on the Mainland where the larger percentage of his employees reside.

I know it must hurt him gravely selling off Konga, but then, it has to be done in the best interest of the organisation.

A massive thank you goes to Simdul Shagaya for inspiring millions of Nigerians in the possibility of the digital business. Onwards and to the best!

CareerWhere Is Influencer Marketing In The Overall Marketing Strategy? by ConnectMee(op): 9:59am On Jun 13, 2018
“So under what channel do we place Influencer Marketing in the overall marketing strategy?”

I asked Oluwatobi Adekunle during one of our random chats centred around Digital Marketing on WhatsApp.

After a long pause, induced by whatever is capable of interfering with feedback in electronic communication, he responded, “Digital PR”.

And he was right. Digital PR it is.

Prior to this discourse, there have been divided opinions among digital marketing colleagues on whether to isolate influencer marketing as an independent channel or appropriate it as a sub-channel under an existing marketing channel?

An article on SocialMediaToday.com sums up Digital PR as thus: “Digital PR is all about combining traditional PR with content marketing, social media and search: transforming static news into conversations and bypassing media to speak directly to your target audience online.”

A further scrutiny of the definition identifies the combination of content marketing (the weapon which influencers use to engage their target audience), and social media (the channels they thrive on) as different components of the same body deployed to extend brand’s share of voice to a specific target audience online, and which by extension, is digital public relations.

An influencer on the other hand according to ArtPlusMarketing, is “a content creator and not the platform (channel) itself’’. From being the focal point of a brand’s narrative to extending market share, all the combined marketing efforts of the influencer are geared toward amplifying the voice of the brand they represent in the digital space.

With Influencer Marketing garnering popularity day by day among marketers and the brands they represent, it is understandable why some marketers assume it is a stand-alone channel whereas it is but a powerful sub-channel of Digital PR.

CareerDigital Marketers, Just How Much Funding Is Right For Your Next Campaign? by ConnectMee(op):
Originating as a WhatsApp group of digital marketing experts and enthusiasts, the Digital Marketing Meetup (DMM Nigeria), seeks to foster professional relationships between members, whilst educating one another on the latest trends, best practices and opportunities within our industry.

One of the most recurring questions posed in this highly resourceful group is the issue of budget allocation to campaigns. So, it is not uncommon to see questions like; ‘‘What budget could run social media ads for a laundry firm’’ or ‘’what’s the likely amount one will spend to install a million apps’’?

While some of these marketers have clearly defined goals and understand the preliminary set up to running successful campaigns, others simply do not. Like any seasoned digital marketer would agree, budget planning without establishing a clear goal or objective for your campaign is like putting the cart before the horse.

So how do you set clear objectives for your campaigns?

The SMART and SOSTAC models are popularly referenced models in marketing which have been tested over the years and proven to be highly effective in assisting digital marketers achieve their objectives.

Rated one of the three most popular marketing models, the SOSTAC model tackles six key elements of marketing by posing simple questions that cascade into an easy starting point. Situation analysis, asks what the current state of the business is. Objectives helps list an overview of goals for the business. Strategy helps provide a “big picture” plan to achieve the goals. Tactics break down the “big picture” strategy into smaller details. Action helps assign responsibility, budgeting and deadlines for certain tasks. Control offers an easy way to track the progress of the plan.

The SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Time-bound guide provides the framework that determines the success of any campaign or otherwise. This marketing tool when properly utilized captures specifically the deliverables, timelines and of course, the resources, under which budgeting comes in, needed to launch a campaign that resonates with your target audience.

Whatever marketing model any digital marketer choose to deploy, a thorough understanding of campaign objectives eliminates the uncertainty associated with budget planning and lay the foundation for successful marketing campaigns.
