I have long come to the conclusion that it's not about the money for a lot of drivers, it's the "rep" that's eating them. The perception that they're "ordinary Uber drivers". That's where I think the issue is otherwise why are we always arguing about numbers? Numbers don't lie.

I get you point, everyone is impacted by the circumstance of the economy but an office person probably can respond better to factors that threatens his income in a more steady manner or long term plan. That is why most banks will rather loan funds to an employee than a small business owner.

See examples of control -

- an office person can has a base pay he can use to plan long term. If you are earning 100k a month, all things being equal, you are able to better project than someone who could earn 200K one month and 20K the next month because his car is faulty of lastma seized the car.

When the petrol price goes up, an office person can actively target hybrid or remote roles to cut costs. They can move closer to their place of work. As an ehailing driver, petrol price goes up and undercuts your profits, you are more constraint and can only respond in a limited manner. You are dependent on the ehailing platform to raise prices. You may try to do offline or some other things to push prices higher, but that could cost you your place in that platform which makes it risky.

cheerful being on rental does not add up. Except the leasor is operating at a loss, cheerful's profit is being undercut by the leasor. Not forgetting the leasor likely has restrictive covenants that limits the free use of the car to pursue his aims.

It's like tinubu claiming to save trillions from oil & FX subsidy removal and yet going on a borrowing spree in spite of high oil prices. It doesn't add up.
Lets look closely at the points in my prior post shall we?

1. Lowest fuel costs

2. Lowest/No maintenance costs

3. Lowest rental fee compared to other alternatives

4. No need to spend intensive capital to buy/acquire said rental type of vehicle
1. Downgrading his work tool (vehicle) from having a 1.8L engine to one that has a tiny 0.9L engine results to an over 50% savings on fueling alone. This means he makes more cash per kilometer than before.

2. The lessor is in charge of all maintenance on the vehicle in question (emphasis on ALL) which means he spends zero naira on maintenance and only has to make out time once in a while to undertake such a procedure. You know how high the prices of regular maintenance materials have increased recently?

3. Paying circa N9,500 to N10,000 daily is a fair amount for rental remittance based in the factors outlined above. Some others on rental pay lower but still end up spending more on fuel and the eventual vehicle's maintenance whenever the need arises.

4. A similar vehicle as that in question being leased would cost circa N28 Million naira new and to see a good tokumbo would cost between N5 Million to N7 million as its purchase price. Nigerian used can be gotten for maybe less but definitely higher than N3 Million naira with its accompanying issues which must be sorted out before it's use.

Then concerning your submission below

cheerful being on rental does not add up. Except the leasor is operating at a loss, cheerful's profit is being undercut by the leasor. Not forgetting the leasor likely has restrictive covenants that limits the free use of the car to pursue his aims.
It adds up when you come to the realisation that the said individual does not plan to be an ehailing driver all his life wink so why spend so much on the vehicle itself (remember the vehicle is only good for minimising fueling costs while hustling, it has limited space and power for regular personal/family use) and spend more on regular maintenance when you can just rent it for a period of time to achieve your set goals after which you return the vehicle by terminating its contract at the realisation of your goals? I know you might say he should have bought the vehicle for himself, finish with his hustling and then rent it out further or sell it to recoup his investment but then not everyone is cut out for such practices in the first place. It's an individual decision plus his lessor has thousands of such contracts/vehicles on the roads so running at a loss won't matter much since they are operating on a large scale.

I myself have been independent and employed so I know the differences between the two circumstances and in my opinion it's not a one shoe fits all kind of decision. It is an individual decision that must be respected by all no matter what divide you fall on. As for having access to loan facilities, both employers and financial institutions will grant you loans if you have a steady inflow of cash in you account be you a salaried or business man. Just show your statements and the rest is history so I don't see why the idea of borrowing money will factor in such a decision (unless you'd want to argue that ehailing drivers aren't business men in which case I'd say you should reconsider your opinion on such a matter)

That someone earns 500k monthly, save a quarter of it for rainy days/projects, run his household and bills with the rest then can still borrow millions from his employer to repay over many months is not bad BUT it is not a solution for everybody. Example, an SSCE holder who has no tertiary education but has a skill . . . DRIVING is his skill, it is because if people like this person that we have such a thread as this. If you have degrees and certifications then you can consider other employment opportunities unlike our unlearned friend with just a school cert cry

So in essence all I'm trying to say is that it's an apples to oranges comparison that should never be a talking theme of this thread. There is a job/vacancy section for such discussions elsewhere on this forum 🙄

Atk1nson:
Probably for many years now cheerful has indicated (with strong evidence) that he does a million a month.

Why would he be on rentals? Something's not adding up.

Generally though, the problem with fast money is that without discipline, it goes fast also.

The greater challenge with the business is that you have little control over how it goes. You don't control the price of petrol, the price of cars, the cost of servicing, government regulations, fares offered. It makes the driver very dependent on the factors outside his control. While drivers are often very industrous, the inability to control many factors in the business makes it a bit challenging to plan long term and leverage the business to do other things.

An office person, though may earn less has more control over how things go and has a large pool of employers he can switch to to hedge his risks. The presence of some sort of control, gives the office person better leverage to plan long term and more easily make moves.
I am still trying to understand this control you speak of in your last paragraph undecided is it the type of control we had when fuel price jumped from N185 to N600 or when the cost of transportation to and from the office trippled overnight? Or when food prices quadrupled over a space of one month? Or when kids schools and landlords increased their fees? Or now that we are still waiting for those in charge to implement the minimum wage increament? cry what is your own definition of the word CONTROL ?

And for your information, the simple reasons that made cheerfulgiver consider taking up a rental was

1. Lowest fuel costs

2. Lowest/No maintenance costs

3. Lowest rental fee compared to other alternatives

4. No need to spend intensive capital to buy/acquire said rental type of vehicle

Why do you think those who mocked him for his sound decision over 8 months ago are now falling over themselves to apply for the same rental deal he is currently enjoying? Even those with their own personal vehicles are not able to accomplish what he is accomplishing upon having sole ownership and control of their own vehicles.

Getting and controlling fast cash is an individual thing, if you aren't cut out for it then you need to work on yourself rather than blame the cash for coming in too fast wink

In all I posted did you read any line where I dropped a debasing word towards him? I spoke to him respectfully wether he deserved it from me or not because I still don't know exactly what he carries in his mind concerning myself. you yourself abuse me on a normal here but i have no qualms with that due to how you feel about me which is entirely your own cross to bear wink

Unlike most here, I'm no coward . . . I say what is needed whenever its needed. Why you see me here bringing this up with Pope is because i wanted clarity. I felt since he could break his months long protocol to bring himself to finally mention me concerning gazzuzz then maybe it was a genuine plea hence my understanding at the time BUT when others started doing exactly what I did just hours after I did it and Pope saw no reason whatsoever to make 'pim' . . . 😒

Let's just say I believe he indirectly tried to instigate a rift with that post he made to me back then undecided That's how I now feel today but it's all good. Since he sees no reason to explain anything to me I won't speak anything of it anymore.

pope191, how far? You know that you and I don't mention or quote each other ever since we had a small altercation here over 8 months ago but on that fateful day 3 weeks ago you suddenly became bold and mentioned me because you saw I wrote gazzuzz's name here in a harmless post.

After I saw that your mention (and getting over my initial surprise) I then empathised with you and apologised for it and let the matter rest. I have never mentioned his name again ever since that day till now just because I decided to accord you some respect.

Since then, there have been some occasions where other members here have written that same name to drive their own points. There was even a time it happened and I decided to call your attention to it just as I did today but you remained mute . . . Why?

Its like, in your opinion for conner44 to mention gazzuzz's name here is a taboo but everyone else can do so and there will be no emotional trauma on your mind? I ask because that same week you chastised me for doing it 2 other people we know here did it too but you kept mute undecided someone else did it here again yesterday and the day before but you also threw your eyes away from their post.

The below is a link to the exact post that made you quote me that day

https://www.nairaland.com/2653841/uber-partner-lagos-please-share/5816#132322000

The 1st pic below is an excerpt from the paragraph that warranted your call out that day.

The 2nd pic below is your query and my reply.

You can read and decide to ignore (just as you've always done over the months) and I won't judge you. If you still carry anything against me in your mind I suggest you find a way to cleanse yourself of it. I have absolutely nothing against today you for you to single me out for your own selfish reasons here.

I have asked if you've finally gotten over gazzuzz's demise to allow others write his name without any reaction from you but you have kept mute as usual . . .

Okay 👍🏾

Imagine saying we are just drivers and we can't understand how business work, this guy must really think he's the most educated person in this life, that was how you were trying to talk down on gazzuzz (RIP) for ignoring to sell you a car cox you were beginning to stress that young man... [/b]
If you've finished your personal mourning, please remember to tell me so I can also join others and use him as a reference without making you feel bad okay.

Damian, you frustrated Eric to extent he paid you off to not have anything to do with you
And you frustrated gazz that he decided not to talk to you until I plead on your behalf.
Pope i'm just pointing the instances out to you in case you missed them before . . . With full respect as a cleric wey you be for here I also expect you to accost them on this matter the same way you did to me 5 minutes after i made that my own post wink

Well, unless you have finally gotten over the tragedy OR you had another reason for reprimanding me the way you did then 😉

Theres this popular saying, "what is good for the goose is supposed to also be good for the gander" or something along that line 🤔
