Lol. It wasn't an English alliance - the grand plan by Lib Dem was usurping Labour from mainstream UK politics. And they had the momentum cos a lot of Labour crowds voted for them. But it backfired.

The whole tribal thing had more to do with how the people voted than the coalition. Lib Dem didn't perform badly in Scotland during the last election.
labour won in scotland & lib dem came 3rd. the rootless SNP even polled more votes than lib dem there. nick clegg is a fool - he sold out & formed an evil alliance with cameron. both of them would be disgraced out of downing street next month. grin

naijababe: It was idealism, aligning with Labour would a have produced a parliament run by election losers! If they had looked past that idealism, it would have been much better for them. Besides, Gordon Brown was a goner either way
i sincerely like gordon brown - he's another monster in politics. even when blair was in power, gordon brown was the german machine. his biggest flaw is his lack of oratory skills.

SirShymexx:
Playing ideals in politics sometimes is more beneficial than joining forces with the other side. It depends on the clime and sometimes, it better to stick with ya base - than go for the big one - and end up losing everything.

UK politics is a classic example. Lib Dem had the momentum during the last election and would have solidified that by aligning with Labour (almost the same party), especially based on how uncharismatic Ed Milliband is - and the Iraq war baggage. But they went for the big one by forming a coalition government with the Tories.

End game: Lib Dem is dead. Resurgence of Labour. And the Tories maintained their core base, albeit gave a percentage to their UKIP offspring.

Timing/clime is everything. Nigeria was still a kid sucking on ti.ts when Awo was alive. And the government was never stable. They had six years, then a coup happened. Afterwards, the civil war started. And back to military rule. Then a short democracy. And back to military rule. This era is different. Tinubu had 16 straight years to plan and execute - Awo never had that.
on the contrary, playing idealism ruined liberal democrat in the UK. in principle, liberals cannot work with conservatives but nick clegg formed an english alliance with an incompatible david cameron to kick out gordon brown who is scottish!

90% of what liberal democrat wanted was against cameron's policies but they wanted a pure english government & that ruined lib dem. under 3 months, cameron turned nick clegg into a liar because cameron couldn't deliver what clegg had promised his electorates.

if clegg wasn't a tribal idealist, gordon brown should have been his choice.

But what exactly did Tinubu learn from Awo? Many Yoruba politicians tend to mention Awo's name for political gain but we can't seem to identify his fiscal or social tenets in their actions.
he's learnt everything from him.
tinubu even dresses like him these days. the cap, the round lens of his glasses & his 2 finger salute.

tinubu is now the leader of the yoruba folks as far as politics is concerned. this seat has been vacant since the demise of abraham adesanya.

Lol. OBJ knows how to play his cards cos he is well connected inside/outside the country - and very cunning as well. But I don't see him as a mammoth - too unprincipled.

Tinubu built his house based on Awo's ideology - the foundation right there. And with this feat, he moved a step ahead - no matter how opportunistic it is.

But folks need to stop calling Awo's name in vain - without him, Yorubas won't be where they're today politically, economically, and in terms of education/enlightenment. They need to stop the madness.
yeah, awo is a pioneer but his students have taken it further than he did. tinubu took a bit of him & akintola.

It is like in rap - no matter how successful and rich both Nas and Jay Z are - there will always be one King of New York and Brooklyn. And that is the Big Poppa loool.
yup!
big poppa would always be remembered as the king of new york. the unanymous support he got from the entire east coast after only one album is legendary.

SirShymexx:
But has OBJ ever had any political clout over the SW? I don't even rate the man - he looks like a coward to me, but a very cunning one loool.
OBJ is a very popular figure.
if he decides to recontest today, he would poll more votes than GEJ. i don't like OBJ at all but politically, he's a mammoth!

When did ACN displace PDP in the SW? I was alluding to that period. That was the peak of the party - it was on the decline before the APC merger.

I rate the Tinubu man but the way folks just threw Awo under the bus on this thread was just off-putting. How dare you do that to a man who sacrificed everything for the Yorubas? He gave Yorubas the structure and an ideology to build on. Gave them all kinds of first in everything and educated more than two generations for free. My pops will die for Awo - the man joined the Army at age 18 towards the end of the civil war to fight cos Awo told folks to join the army. But never ended up on the frontline. How many Yoruba folks would do that for Tinubu?
no one threw awo under the bus. as far as integrity goes, awo trumps tinubu about a billion times but that's just half of the story. no one would win in nigerian politics with awo's ideology - and for that simple fact, he's a bit behind jagban!

politics is a game - you have to be in it to win it. history is never kind to losers no matter how unique their idealism is. awo is a far better administrator than tinubu without any doubt but he's a lilliput in the politicking game.

Well said Terracotta,

But how else do you fight a giant like PDP without money (regardless of the source)

As long as our democracy is still in the realm of what it is currently, You need fearless and politically astute men like Jagaban.

Wole Soyinka, Gani , Solarin etc would be in Lagos arguing and blowing English without finances thinking the boundary of Nigeria ends at Ojota
should we really care how jagban made his money? the people he was up against didn't play the game fairly too. it was tinubu versus oil-block owners.

the lekki toll gate is starting to make sense now. jagban needed loads of cash to bring down the evil empire known as PDP. LCC was the vehicle used to fetch that money.

another brilliant masterstroke! grin
Politics › Re: Jagaban by coogar: 6:41pm On Apr 03, 2015
SirShymexx:
I honestly doubt that based on how GEJ self-destruct by turning PDP into a regional party - and doubling-up as the ruling party, which heavily marginalised the SW.
OBJ also pressed the self-destruct button and he won again in 2003. in spite of GEJ's self destruction, he was still able to poll 3 million votes. take tinubu's influence out of it and GEJ would have won with aplomb.

Politics is a game of chance and numbers. And regardless of his distrust with the North - he would've taken his chance as well. Why didn't Tinubu take the chance and align with Buhari in 2011, when ACN was at its peak?
ACN wasn't at his peak in 2011. they were still finding their feet then. PDP had taken over the SW but lagos state(another credits to tinubu) which most people seem to ignore.

TerraCotta: Very interesting discussion. Good to see some familiar names talking about a worthwhile topic.

It's a little difficult for an Awolowo advocate like myself to come to this conclusion, but it's what I think after a dispassionate analysis.

All said, the old Western region owes what it is today as the heart of Nigeria's commercial and intellectual life to Awolowo's high ideals and strategic vision, but the whole of Nigeria stands to owe its future (good or bad) to Asiwaju. From the perspective of lasting political relevance, I don't think they are peers. Jagaban don take am.
may God bless you...
Politics › Re: Jagaban by coogar: 5:15pm On Apr 03, 2015
SirShymexx: Awolowo just miscalculated because he wasn't aware of any agreement back then. And regardless of whatever decision he and Akintola made on who to align with - it was already sealed between NCNC and NPC, way before the election. So, I honestly don't know why folks still critique Awolowo for that, to be honest.
awolowo is a visionary leader but when it comes to the nitty-gritty of politicking, he's a lilliput. his idealism is his biggest weakness. in the current dispensation, awo would have been a lamb to these PDP vampires.

Tinubu won this election for Buhari

This is the 4th time Buhari is attempting the presidency, what changed this time? It was the Tinubu factor

ow did Tinubu get here within 8yrs

As at 2007 Tinubu AC had 1 state. EVen someone like Orji Kalu had 2 states

How did Tinubu grow from a 1 state ruler to a national behemoth? By playing politics

Awolowo was a better administrator, brilliant person but Tinubu was a better Politician than Awolowo

Give Awolowo 100yrs he would never win the givt at the center with his attitude. Awolowo was quoted as saying "Rather than work with Gambari, He would rather die" or something like that.

In the previous Buhari attempts he would just campaign in the North, speaking Hausa, elections would come and he would win only core Northern states and end up losing the election.

WHat did Tinubu do? He first let Buhari go with his hardline stand in 2011 and saw the result.

He now took him in 2015 repackaged him, supported him financially, gave him his media, did the propaganda war etc

EVen things as little as Buharis dressing was repackaged. In previous elections Buhari rarely dressed in other attires aside his Hausa ones now we have pictures of Buhari not only wearing Ibo, Ijaw, Yorubas but even suit
tell them.........

So the incumbent losing an election in Nigeria had nothing to do with the disenfranchisement of the people? GEJ was incompetent, weak, and corrupt. That's why he lost the election. Did Tinubu and Buhari not lose to GEJ 4 years ago? Did Buhari not lose 3 previous elections? In 1983, NPN rigged Oyo and Ondo. Perhaps you should read up on the violence that followed in those states.
disenfranchisement? and yet GEJ still polled 12 million of the 27 million votes that counted? nigerians must be masochists. cheesy grin without the south west, GEJ would have won and that's the single most important factor here.

Winning elections aside, what is Tinubu's legacy? No doubt, Tinubu is good at politics but governing is a different matter entirely. We don't have elections so we can decide who is best at winning them, we do so we can select the best person for governing.
tinubu's legacy is putting the yoruba race on the map again. his tactical astuteness in placing osinbajo as the running mate to buhari when everyone thought rotimi amaechi would get it was a brilliant move.

awolowo wouldn't have been able to usurp the ruling power like tinubu did. let's get that clear - awo is too principled and while this attribute isn't necessarily bad, it often beclouds the sense of reasoning.

don't let tinubu's sangfroid attitude deceive you, he's a political monster. NPN that outfoxed awo was a microcosm of what PDP is. this is the greatest election feat in the history of nigeria. many didn't see it coming.

All in all, it was more that GEJ lost the election than that Tinubu/Buhari won.
nah, GEJ didn't just lose the election. APC made him lose the election & that credits go to tinubu and his astute posse.

awolowo is overrated - he couldn't even keep oyo state from NPN in the 83 elections. yet, we have tinubu who have directly or indirectly ruled lagos for the past 16 years and plotted the downfall of the most powerful political party in the history of nigeria - and you guys want to deny him his credits?

I'm very glad that Jonathan has shown them and the entire world that we aren't power hungry ,all we want is an equal and fair share of our resources and that isn't too much to ask for.

The good people of Nigeria should tell Buhari to do the right thing as any attempt to extend the dreams of his fathers will fail.
except that GEJ & his cronies colluded with the nigerian army to hide buhari's certificate. what about the dollars GEJ distributed to south west obas & high chiefs? if that's not being power hungry, you should redefine what that term means.
