Webmasters / Mobile Webpage: Is It Part Of The Webdesign Package? by Cool: 1:29pm On Mar 28, 2013
I'm taking my business online and want my webpage to be enabled for use on mobile electronics e.g. phones, ipad etc.

Is this functionality an integral part of web design or a separate package?

Thank you.

Cool.

Thanks, Brand_new!

How can I check for speed and reliability? Affodability - that, I know how to do wink
When I hear that a website is 'down', I assume it's the host server that is down. How can I check the history of a host server's uptime?

Also, I've frequently heard that the speed at which a webpage downloads is a function of the design. You seem to suggest that the host server also plays a role. Please explain that to me.

Much thanks.
Webmasters / How To Own A Website: Things To Look Out For. by Cool: 10:53am On Mar 27, 2013
Hello.

I need some clarifications about owning a website. Would appreciate all advice.

1. Is it possible to move a website from one hosting service provider to another? If yes, will all functionality be retained? What rights should I ensure that I have when putting the website together?

2. I want to be able to update my website myself i.e. make adjustments or additions to content etc. What should I ask the developer for so that I can have this functionality?

3. Many organisations offer hosting services. I'm sure the quality of service cannot be the same. What are the key attributes to look out for when choosing a hosting site?

Thank you.

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: How HR Personals Kill Dreams In Nigeria by Cool: 5:55pm On Jan 06, 2013
boladonas: HR Practitioners like me, have in most cases only your application letter and CV to make informed judgements in less than 5 minutes per CV.
At that stage what separates a candidate from another is his/her grade in school. Remember also, that sometimes you can have 25,000 applications for just 20 positions. We also look at what we think your competencies are and try to do a person fit. When we call for interviews, it is this fit that we are looking for, and if Intelligent Quotient carries a high weight in the fit, your grade at school is the only measure available to the HR practitioner.

Dont worry, there are jobs that require less of IQ and more of brawn, you may have more chances in landing such jobs or rather proceed to do an MBA.

Thank you

I am compelled to respond to this post because of the misinformed arrogance of Boladonas and the potential his/her post has to douse the spirit of some of our young, bright 2.2-classed youths. I will try to be brief in my response to the post.

I agree that an easy way for organisations (and thus HR personnel) in Nigeria to approximate intellectual potential is CPGA. Howevever, anyone who schooled, works or practises HR in Nigeria and categorically states that 2.1 class equates high IQ should also categorically be labelled uninformed.

Having said that, every organisation has a right to set its HR policy and as long as its statements and behaviours are ethical, it does not owe anybody any apology.
HR personnel simply implement organisational policies so, it would be unfair to lay the blame at the door of HR personnel solely however, since HR is now expected to occupy a more strategic position within an organiation, maybe they can be challenged to come up with metrics that may be better suited to the Nigerian environment.

I graduated some years ago, with an unclassed degree that has been accepted in global circles as 1st class. So, I am not writing this to defend my 2.2 class (as some might be wont to speculate). It is simply to state that someone with 2.2; especially high CPGA cannot be labelled as brawn. It could simply be that the person was not inclined to engage in some untoward practices that might have tipped him/her into 2.1. It might also be that the method of education in Nigeria did not bring out the best in the person. Isn't it interesting that the ratio of Nigerians with 1st class and 2.1 degrees from foreign universities is disproportionately high when compared with domestic graduates? I could go on about this, but I'll stop after I say this: The expression that only 2.1 and above have high IQ is antiquated and better left within the confines of offices that still subscribe to such thinking wink

Now, to the 2.2 graduates, what Boladonas has exhibited is the classic unfounded and undefendable arrogance that you will find in some organisations (especially the consulting firms). They need to sustain that mentality to keep convincing themselves that there is something different about them. Take them away from the ocean of templates that they are immersed in and they are usually lost!! Interestingly, there are some postgraduate courses outside Nigeria that someone with a 2.1 degree from a Nigerian university will not be admitted to - so, "2.1 equals high IQ" firms/HR personnel.... what do you say to that?

Anyway, if you have a 2.2 degree, you simply need to sit down, rediscover yourself and chart your course. Don't get angry with the System, it's not worth it.
Decide where you want to go, research on how you can get there and don't let anyone tell you that you can't or label you low IQ.
A well-travelled route for a lot of people is to obtain a Masters degree from abroad. Just spread out your nets.

I wish you the best!!

Cool
PS: I love our 1st class and 2.1 guys too!! Well done!

Entertainment / Re: Adewale Ayuba Beaten-up For Arriving Late At Performance Venue by Cool: 5:50pm On Oct 29, 2012
I think these musicians think it's fashionable to appear late for engagements. I say this because I have seen quite a few of them behave like this.
The interesting thing is that it's those of them that think they have 'arrived' that behave in such an unbecoming fashion.
I don't think a traffic jam on Lagos-Ibadan expressway would be acceptable justification for arriving at 6pm for a 12noon appointment.
I was at a certain function where a musician was expected to start performing at 10pm but didn't arrive until about 1.30am. He eventually started playing at 2pm and took a 30minute break at 4pm. Everyone was irritated. I'm sure in some other circles, the situation could have become tense.
Well, that was over 2 years ago and I took a decision there: Would not attend his performances anymore.
If an entertainer does not respect my time, I should not pay any regard to him or his music.
For me, time is life.
I'm sure the real reason for Ayuba's lateness has not been revealed.
In our society where burial ceremonies are esteemed by many, Ayuba's behaviour is simply irresponsible.
My advise to those who invite these guys for events is that a clause should be inputted in the contract, which places a huge penalty on them if the principal musician does not start performing at the agreed time. Maybe that will help them behave better as true businessmen.

Education / Tutorial Classes Needed For SSCE Coaching by Cool: 7:02pm On Sep 17, 2012
Hello everyone,

I require tutorial classes for an SSCE science student.

In my days, there was Top Tutors at Ilupeju.
Is Top Tutors still in operation?
Please suggest any such school to me in Ikeja, Ilupeju, Gbagada, Yaba environs.

I am also open to suggestions on full time secondary schools that can provide the kind of structured teaching attention that I am trying to get. Boarding facilities will be a welcome advantage.

Thanks.

Hello everyone,

I need to buy a plot of land or bungalow and decided to check the Property Section but it seems I have to just check page by page.
The page-by-page navigation is simply cumbersome and I've abandoned it.

Am I missing something please? Is there a way to search using location, type of property etc?

Please advise.

Food / Re: Are There Soup Kitchens In Nigeria? by Cool: 4:39pm On Oct 27, 2011
RCCG Apapa family operates a 'soup kitchen'.
Every Sunday, the different branches under this group organise themselves and go to strategic locations to give out food.

The traditional soup kitchen operates from a specific location which people go to for food but here, the churches go to where the people are to give out food.

Different mode of operations but same intent, I would say.

We just need to look closer, I'm sure there will be other varieties.

Fashion / Re: I Want To Have Quick Dreadlocks by Cool: 11:08am On Mar 01, 2011
Quick dreadlocks?
I'm not sure there's anything like that! With dreadlocks, patience is really key  smiley
A method of making dreadlocks - interlocking - will help your hair stay longer together at the initial stages and give the look of dreadlocks but I say, "approach with care". If wrongly done, it can quickly damage your hair.
I have been to a lot of the 'good' salons in Lagos that handle locs and I have only met one guy who claims to do interlocking style. I allowed him handle my hair for about 3 months and my hair is still recovering from what he did. I am very attentive to my locs and I was able to detect the damage he was causing on time. If not, I might be telling another story.
About salons, get a referral to a specific person, not a salon. Usually, there are many people doing locs in these salons and not all of them are good. I know because I've been to a lot of them. When you see someone with locs that look nice, ask the person for the name and phone number of his/her loctician.
If you want locs that look healthy and alive, stay away from excessive use of products on your hair.
I advise that you should not put toothpaste on your hair; not even for 5 minutes.
Well, I understand the urge to have beautiful locs the moment you start. I felt the same way too but now, 4 years down the line, I'm glad I took the slow but steady route smiley
Regards.

Fashion / Re: I'm Thinking Of Getting Dreadlocks: by Cool: 10:47am On Mar 01, 2011
Hi Sima,
I've been wearing my locs for almost 4 years so, I can give some informed opinion about your question.
It is very important to know/remember that the decision about how you wear your hair is very personal (provided you're an adult and mum no longer chooses your hair styles!). So, nobody can really tell you whether to do it, or not to do it. You're the boss, you get to decide!
Consideration of these matters may help you decide.
1. Why am I considering locs? Fashion trend, grow healthy hair, get time off from frequent salon visits etc. List your reasons.
2. Can I handle the attitude that could be exhibited or opinions that could be expressed by some people who don't like the idea of locs?
3. Can I handle locs at work, socially, in my religious circles etc?
4. , Some other things that may come to your mind,
Now, to my experience:
Prior to starting my locs, I had severely damaged hair. I had lost most of the hair at my temples i.e. both sides of my head to excessive application of relaxer, friction from braids etc. As you can imagine, over many years, I had spent a lot of money on different hair products without success (of course, there is always something new in the market to try).
I finally had to accept the fact that the best opportunity I could give my hair was to allow it grow by itself and regain its natural strength. I couldn't imagine weaving my hair like a secondary school girl, changing my hairstyle every 3 days from suku to patewo, ipako elede etc (I remember those days  wink). I decided for the ultimate comeback! A style that would give the least friction to my scalp and be fashionable. Dreadlocks was it!
Since starting my locs, over 50% of my lost hair has grown back and that is fantastic when I compare that to all my efforts in over 10years prior to starting locs. Apart from that,  my locs are beautiful and get me looks of admiration. Yes o!
I must let you know though, that contrary to the commonly held impression that locs are an easy way to maintain your hair, I will tell you that if you want the type of locs that look well maintained, it will take your time and dedication; even more so at the beginning and that could be about 12 to 18 months.
So much can be said about locs, the most important thing to do before starting is to consider your personal situation. If you are not sure, you could give it a try and if you don't like it you can undo it. Yes, if your locs are not yet mature (preferably within 6 months of starting) and you have used the twist method to do your locs, you can undo the locs. I loosened mine after about 6 to 7 months because I thought it was taking too long to loc and I was going to the salon too much. About 4 months after loosening it, I restarted and I haven't looked back since then!
Cheers.
Fashion / Re: What Kind Of Oitment Can I Use To Remove Wrinkles Of My Face? by Cool: 3:17pm On Jan 26, 2011
Hi,
From what I know, wrinkles can be reduced by increasing the moisture content of the skin. So, any good moisturiser that is used over a long time should reduce the appearance of wrinkles. However, the person will need to continue using it so that the wrinkles do not reappear.
Moisturisers can be found in all skin product sections of shops; especially if you go to the ladies' section. A lot of them are however combined with skin lightening ingredients (or skin toning ingredients! - to appeal to people who do not want to think they are engaging in skin lightening!). Caveat: I'm not averse to skin lightening (or toning). Just be moderate and don't seek to change your skin colour by several tones. But I digress  grin
Back to the issue of moisturisers. I recommend that you go natural. You can use a combo of natural shea butter and natural honey.
Or if you want minimal fuss, just use natural shea butter. It is a very good moisturiser, not expensive and easy to come by in Nigeria and West Africa as a whole. Natural shea butter is greyish in colour. You could also come across shea butter that is yellow in colour; it's yellow because palmoil has been added to it.
Being a natural product, do not expect the overnight result you can get from off-the-counter, highly priced products but used consistently over a 2 to 4 week period, you will notice great improvements.
My two cents!
Cheers.

[liAdorn Homes Ltd works with Mortgage Banks who have quick access to the NHF.

Presently, we have 2 developments under the NHF on our books. This means that, the FMBN (Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria) have authorised the NHF for these 2 developments.

Regards

Hi Adornhomes,

Please throw more light on the quote above.

About 5 months ago, I visited some mortgate banks to get info on the NHF and ALL of them mentioned the delay in receiving the funds after applying. None could guarantee or give an estimate on when the funds can become available after submitting the application.  I'm therefore interested in the suggestion that some mortgage banks can guarantee quick access to the NHF.

Furthermore, what do you mean by having developments under the NHF? It is the first time I'm coming across a suggestion that the FMBN (NHF) develops estates or indeed specially approves some estates for development.  Do you mean that anyone who subscribes to these properties automatically gets NHF allocation?

Please clarify these points as they do not synchornise with the info I have on how NHF works.

I would have sent you an email directly, but it seems there's a good interest level on this topic so, I think it'll be good for everybody to get all things clear.

Regards,

Health / Re: I Have A Fibroid: What Do I Do? by Cool: 2:07pm On Jul 31, 2007
Hi,
Please do not be worried.

Statistically, 75% of black women have fibroids; only sizes vary. Most people are never aware of it. A fibroid is not a cause for alarm and only needs to be treated if it is causing physical problems. It seems your concerns are more psychological than physical.

There are many reasons why your tummy could be getting bigger. Most commonly, it could be due to a general gain in weight. Furthermore, a posterior fibroid does not quickly show in the tummy. It has to be of a significant size before you can see/feel it through your tummy.

I have a medical background and I agree with your doctor. From everything you posted, surgery is not indicated. You do not need to do anything at all. It could remain at that size or even shrink of its own accord. Just forget about it and relax.

I repeat, there is no cause for concern.

Cheers.

doubletree:

let it be seen especially to your mum in law that you are making an effort.

Good talk.

Call her and if she tells you she's busy, be calm and end the conversation nicely.
Next day, call your mum-in-law and while talking with her, just mention in passing that you called Sister Bleep y'day but she was busy then. Don't complain about her attitude at all. Repeat the process about 2 other times but on the 3rd occassion, request your mum-in-law to pleeeeaaassee remind her to call you when she's freer. Thereafter, if she doesn't call you, just call her once a while until everyone settles in because you both will settle to a rhythm at some point in time.

You've shown a lot of wisdom by calling her sister as she prefers.

Enjoy the game!  wink
Politics / Re: Jimi Agbaje's Picture Was Omitted On Ballot Papers by Cool: 3:16am On Apr 15, 2007
The absence of Jimi's picture should not be taken lightly. At the polling booth I used, one elderly lady after voting, sought confirmation that Agbaje was PDP because she didn't see his pic. Needless to say, that's one vote less for the guy and Jimi lost by 5 votes to Fashola (not full Lagos results o, just my polling booth!).

, and the electoral officers tried to insist on stopping voting at 3pm. Yes! They wanted to disenfranchise people who had been on queue for over an hour. After much protests, they allowed the next 10 ppl to vote and simply stopped. It was unbelievable. The rules said everybody on queue before 3pm should be allowed to vote. BTW, the officials didn't arrive till about 11am so, voting started very late.

, anyways, so many of us stayed back and observed the counting. It was generally peaceful and fun.
