Right now in Nigeria, we don't have a shortage of food, for example, if you need a million bag of rice tomorrow, you will get it easily just that that you will have to pay above the odd price .I'm surprised you are limiting your views on food price alone. Today I bought a satchet of pure water for #50, I almost weep for our naira.Imagine our #50 been exchanged for a satchet water,is Nigeria a desert or a war zone? We are obviously seeing crystal clear the full effect of inflation.
Sorry for the late reply , I have been busy, if food is plentiful, then food should be cheap according to economics but I understand other factors e.g transport is adding to food price going up.

The demand for garri has always been massive since the beginning of time.If it is about demand, garri should be the most expensive food. But the price has been very stable over the past years. But with the current inflation we are experiencing now,it has affected every price of everything. So what do you expect from farmers who also want to meet their basic needs as well? Definitely they will also have to hike up the price of their farm produce in other to meet those needs as well. If inflation rate is not control or regulate, everyone going Into farming will solve zilch of our already compounded problem as every other sector is also battling the same inflation.

Well said, inflation can be managed when food is abundant.E.g when the naira fall for every bag of rice imported, so the price is up. If rice is produced abundantly in Nigeria there will be no need to import and the price will be descent.

The frustration is when you're home sleeping and your farm is being harvested at night.
The rate of stealing in this country is on another level. Unless it's a backyard farm setup
Backguard farming is also welcome development. Stealing is not nothing new at all but people have device away to fence thieves.

Garri is a locally produced staple food in Nigeria, atleast we all know it is not imported,so why is the price of garri skyrocketing on a daily basis?
Because the demand for garri is more than the supply plus transport factor. Plus they are more mouth to feed. Every Nigerian should be encourage to be farm or encourage farmers.

This is a good thread,I will appreciate it people can actually bring out practical ideas on how to solve this serious challenge facing Nigerians

My own take is as follows:

Agriculture,Aquaculture(fish farming) ,poultries and any type of farming actively should be given to Local Governments as pioneers
There are 774 Local Governments in Nigeria today and each local government in conjunction with state governments should be supported to allocate at least between 20 acres to 100 acres to farming
This farms should be granted financial and infrastructure support to be well structured
Houses,Farm settlements can be built and modern farm implements and tools equipped on each site
Individuals and private organisations can be encouraged to lease such settlements while the state governments will be responsible for providing infrastructure such as roads and logistics to move out products

As for the Federal Government, they will act as a guarantor of last resort
This in turn means the Federal Government will activate Food Silos across the Senatorial Districts of Nigeria, this silos will become a Food Bank where excess products from the Local Governments are bought by the Federal Government
Awards can be instituted every year, this awards will be given to Local Governments to encourage the best LGAs who are producing the most results
It will surely ginger the LGAs to compete against themselves for the Awards

Finally, this farm settlements will be secured, criminals, bandits and kidnappers will see these places as no go areas
I love your idea

We don't have comparative advantage in rice production

Yet we can adapt, learn how to mass produce rice or starve because those who sells rice to Nigeria will always sell in their currency or dollar or Euro or Pounds. They do not care if 2000 naira is to a dollar as long they make their money

What we are experiencing is not food scarcity but inflation which has affected prices of all goods and not just food price alone.
Rice is a major food diet then why is rice being imported?

most important thing to consider buying when starting a farm is AK47 with enough bullets because Fulani herdsmen will come for you
If they can legalize citizen owning firearm, i definately would not mind. At least i get chance to survive

Farming isn't as cheap as you think
You will have to consider security, water supply amongst many others
Nothing good come easy or cheap. Farming is way better than the vices that many youths are doing today. Everyone wants to be a governor or politicians or earn millions sitting on a desk as Oga. Meanwhile naira is falling, food is expensive. God has blessed Nigeria

Since food is getting very expensive, make everyone become farmer. If you are unemployed, try farming. Our forefathers were farmers , i do not know why many do not want to farm. Instead of building house and school, let us go back to farming. Buy tractor, hoes , cutlass, seeds , fertilizer or manure and farm the land. Fertile land plenty, one can grow corn, another group cassava, or so on. Agriculture should be big business by now.
Not all areas are taken by bandits or kidnappers.

Let us discuss, food prices have gone up..many are hungry. Food insecurity affect everyone.
1. Give if you have extra
2. Support farmers. Withoutb
3. Go into farming especially if you have land and can monitor your crops
4. Any ideas are welcome.

How can you Mass produce food when bandits have taken over all the farms in Nigeria?
Many thanks to APC government.

It is tragic, I wish something can be done against insecurity. If the average farmer cannot farm without fear of being killed, I do not expect food prices to go down anytime soon.

I recently visited the Federal ministry of Agriculture page online and was not really impressed. All I saw was a bunch of men and women taking photos in their agbada and native wear. While the prices of food is becoming high, I wonder what this ministry is doing about this? How can Nigeria mass produce food ? we have fertile lands in our country and the manpower to do so, the only problem is security and stealing from workers. Food should be cheap and ready available, the only reason why food price is very high is because many food items in Nigeria are imported from other countries. Many countries see Nigeria as a bank, they do not care if $1 is ₦200000, all they care is getting their money. They will price their food items based on their currency , not naira. And there is where the problem lies.
A hungry man will not care if the food is locally made or imported as long he eats. We should support our farmers in anyway or shape.

This is gas lighting at it's finest. So people should cancel their dreams/ambitions because of their parents? What about those whose parents live in the village while they reside in the city? What should they do ? They should abandon their hustle in the city in order to take care of their parents? There are many people who's parents live in a different state from them. Should they leave what they are doing in the state they are based in just to care for their parents? It is very important to take care of your parents but your own survival should come first. You cannot be hungry and then have the strength to feed another human being whilst having an empty stomach. It's just human nature.
Agree with you, but at the same time who will take care of their parents. Strangers, distant relatives, paid househelp who do not really care

I always wonder who will take care of Baba and Mama if all their children have relocated abroad. No one can take care of your aging parents like the way you do. We pray to get old and be healthy. Not everyone can bring their parents to overseas.

Investment / Riches To Rags by cooltola(m): 10:38pm On Jan 21
Some people have made a lot of money and wish they could go back in time to reverse their misfortune. It is one thing to go from being broke all the time to having a lot of money and now back to being broke. It is painful , please share the worst story that you have heard due to wasteful spending, excessive gambling or bad investment. what lesson can be learnt?

Enjoying your wedding should not break you financially.

Foods , drinks are free there, everyone want to eat party rice , dsmall chops and drink, dance and enjoy themselves.

Do not expect family members or friends to spray you a lot of money. Economy is not smiling.

Do not pass your boundaries , learn to cut your coat according to your size.

After wedding is over, everyone goes back home and the gbese or debt is on you. If you can afford a wedding, please go ahead.

You just starting your life together, don't start with debt or no money.

MEEVEET:

How many of those shops can afford 24 hours electricity

How much do you think a cold room would pay per months as electric bill ?

Or you want subsidize electricity or free electricity
Let the government first do its job by producing electricity 24 hours a day or at least 16 hours in high business area. if those businesses cannot pay, nepa can always cut off their supply like they have done in the past. This is how businesses can survive in the first place. FG needs to stop dancing around with useless elephant projects and do key projects by providing electricity. I even question how one thinks a business can survive with the kind of electricity supply Nigeria currently has, the business is bound to fold or fail. No wonder, unemployment is high. Even if electricity is at least 16 hours, the unemployment rate will not be this high. Name one country that has a poor electricity supply like Nigeria and does well in term of economics?
Romance / Advise To Newly Wed Or Those Who Are About To Get Married by cooltola(m): 1:42pm On Dec 03, 2023
Congratulations on finding a spouse , there is going to be disagreement and arguing. Incase there is no solution, please in the name of peace and sanity in your marriage, do not air out your spouse fault to your brother or sister or parents or cousins or any close relatives . Even though you may not see wrongdoing by reporting your spouse, your family will more likely take your side. Your family might see your spouse as the bad one and once this impression is there, it is there for life. The only exception is physical abuse where one life is in danger or infidelity
Instead find a neutral older person who you and your spouse both know and respect and will not pick side if both of you cannot solve your matter by yourself. They can advise you and your spouse on what to do. Show who is at fault without taking sides

Name one thing lack of electricity is stopping Nigerians from doing that would make us move forward

I dare you name it
Business can grow with electricity, froozen food business , manufacturing jobs , IT and so many more. All the government need to do is to provide constant electricity and leave the rest to masses. This provision of electricity is the job of the government . Jobs cannot grow if electricity is scare

Once this issue is fix, then Nigeria can move forward. I still wonder why those in power are not trying to fix this problem instead they are doing elephant project like building school and so forth.
Till then , expect things to worsen.

Romance / Why Many People Are Single In Their Late 30s Or 40s? by cooltola(m): 7:07am On Nov 09, 2023
The economy does not help at all. The economy has not helped or encourage youth to settle down. Many don japa for greener pasture
Too many bad marriages do not encourage young people to get married e.g husband beat wife, DNA test reveals children might be for another man
Being too picky in your 20s and early 30s, it is good to be selective but do not be too picky. Too much shakara is not good, ease up.
Some youths chase away potential husband or wife material due to bad behaviours e.g smoking, drinking , abusive mouth

When a wife leaves a spouse- it is ground for divorce if the man is not maltreating his wife. For better for worse, look if a woman cannot stay in the worse part of marriage then she doesn't deserve to get married. Monitor your wife in Lagos to see if she is not cheating, if she is. Please divorce her sharply and quietly..
