9. forumindex.com was sold 3 hours ago. 5 bids ended at $21 sale price.

Seems low but the seller will have a reason for selling off at that price. But of course once you put your domain name in an auction you have no choice than to abide by the final price (if you had no reserve set).
BusinessNaira Vs Dollar. Oil Prices Not The Problem, Stupidity Is. by CPriest(op): 1:34am On Dec 12, 2015
I will use one example to show why we need smart people as leaders in Nigeria. Apple Computer.

Nigeria is a country of 210 million people. Apple Inc has just 110,000 employees. But because Apple exists, 1,027,000 jobs exist in the United States.

With 110,000 employees, no crude oil, no mineral resources, nothing but brains, Apple's income has grown by more than 400% since 2009.

Total Annual Revenue Revenue
2014 Revenue $182,800,000,000
2013 Revenue $170,910,000,000
2011 Revenue $108,249,000,000
2010 Revenue $65,225,000,000
2009 Revenue $42,905,000,000

Apple made an income of $182bn dollars in 2014, Nigeria oil revenues in 2014 was $32.3 billion. In 2015, it will likely be much lower.

For years (since 1970s) we have been drunk with our oil wealth folly, saying we are rich. Our leaders have neglected the development of human capacity which is the focal point of the knowledge economy. With crude crisis, they are advocating farming (they say agriculture. but no its farming we do here) as the solution. A farming agenda is not a smart move for a nation with millions of unemployed graduates and millions joining per annum.

Investopedia says this
In countries like the U.S., Canada and Western Europe, there is very little land allowed to go to waste and infrastructure like roads is well-developed. Likewise, irrigation is widespread and farmers use fertilizer extensively. This has led many countries and farmers to turn to genetically modified seeds to increase yields and reduce the need for costly (and potentially polluting) fertilizer and herbicides.

Top global Agric exporters
United States - $118.3 billion
Netherlands - $79
Germany - $70.8
France - $68
Brazil - $55.4

The picture is much different in Africa and much of South Asia. In these areas, infrastructure is extremely under-developed and simply getting crops to market (or inputs like fertilizer to the farms) can be a struggle. Likewise, irrigation infrastructure is lacking, leaving farmers much more exposed to the variability of weather. Not surprisingly, then, a large focus of governments in these countries is to try to build roads, improve access to water and encourage the use of inputs, like fertilizer.

We are watching Naira vs Dollar everyday but we have not called ourselves to say this is where we are going, and this is what we are going to get there. Even if we said its Agric for us, has anyone projected how much we can make from Agric, when we can start making it, and what we need to put in place to make it? Has anyone planned for getting the infrastructures that is needed?

It is crude to tie our destinies to crude oil, and it is silly to expect diversification will stem the Naira fall in any short period. An intelligent question to ask is this? Didn't the nation survive when crude oil was $12? The Gulf war windfall (oil price shock) was at a price of $21 and the maximum was $46. But that is another topic. So why are we mourning at the crude oil price of $40? Because of stupidity.

In conclusion, Apple Computer is richer than the whole nation of Nigeria because of one fact. Human capital.

From Wikipedia
Human capital is an important factor for the wealth of a nation due to its influence on the overall production of the country. Technological progress can provide more efficient production-methods like machines and computers, but skilled labor is necessary to manage and develop them as well as to improve the quality and productivity of the existing labor. The formation of Nigeria's human capital is therefore of great importance in the coming years if Nigeria wants to be competitive in the future. However, Nigeria is having a problem with its human capital.

The Human Development Index (HDI) provides a measure of human capital development in three dimensions: income, health, and education. The latest values of HDI shows that Nigeria is ranked 156 with the value of 0.459 among 187 countries. The value places Nigeria in the bottom, meaning that Nigeria is considered to have low level of human development.

It is 23:14 hrs. Almost midnight. The generators are out and PHCN is on leave. I couldn't sleep so I Nairaland on my phone. I see the various interesting things young Nigerians are up to and I admire how our spirit finds a way even when the situation says no. Weldone to everyone.

But I didn't jump up, grab my laptop and run it on my precious laptop so I can say 'goodjob'; I jumped up to contribute a little to the beauty of your next project whether it be a new business, website, or blog. This is because a professional project always has to do with the branding. Part of the branding includes the name, the logo, the tone etc etc. I am concerned about the name.

When I see a Nigerian blog, I instantly know. The giveaway signs are all around. From the headlines, to the content, the layout to the logos, the ad placements, and the features, everything scream Nigerian. That is not bad, but nevertheless, but more can be achieved as we grow up and mature in the online space.

Let's talk about the name. Checkout the names of some random lifestyle blogs from Phillipines.

Some of these names are average, but all of them are ok. They sound interesting and they are not localised even though they are local to their country.

I won't start with a list of names of Nigeria blogs. Some a-list blogs caught up to the fact that a blog can't just be named by whima and have rebranded. We have some nice names now and that is great.

How you should name your project

Let's reason this together. You want your project to grow, to become famous, to earn you money, and maybe to morph into something else with time. The question is this, does the current name you want to call it allow for that?

You should therefore select a name that is appealing, not too streamlined, and for the sake of G, have some bearing with what you want to talk about (keyworded).

Creating names is difficult in most instances. But to name your blog shouldn't cause much stress or cost you $70,000 as it cost to create the name Pentium.

So how do you name your project?

Here are ideas to use.

1. A nice noun. It may be a place, a person, an object, a plant, a flower. You should try to pick a noun that can serve as a metaphor for your project. Let's say my project is on teenage love. So I can select flowers, and then I pick hibiscus (sorry that's a popular flower I know. Can be any flower).

2. An adjective. Now is the chance for you to introduce the core of your project. The project is teenage love, and with the theme around the hurts, especially abortion, breakups etc.
I can add bleeding, broken, dropped, crying, etc.

Contrast that with a teenage love project that is focused on being strong even though you are abused, in that instance words such as steel, strong, etc will be my choice.

For hurts then I have bleedinghibiscus, brokenhibiscus, cryinghibiscus etc.

I can name the project The Broken Hibiscus and the blog or website will be www.brokenhibiscus.com

Now that is average a bit. Let's find out what the tenderest flower in the world is.

It is Chamomile (thanks to uaflowers / Google). I can have Steel Chamomile - www.steelchamomile.com for the second project which will be to encourage teenage girls not to let abuse weigh them.

Why the effort is needed.

I have names that have meaning. And not only do they have meaning, I have a story behind the names I am choosing. I am gradually building a brand. I can go on to write a book called Steel Chamomile. Print TShirts, start Steel Chamomile clubs etc.

In a Nairaland thread titled Dollars & Nigerians, the versatility and smartness of Americans was mentioned. Branding, focused and coherent presentation was noted as one of the beauties of entrepreneurs from that side of the world.

So fellowrians, let's quit naming our businesses, websites, and blogs in the laziest way possible. That is why I love Nigerian hiphop artistes, even though their lyrics may be flat, they have some nice names plastered to their persons.

1. I find out that a lot of interested domainers have a challenge with buying the right domain names to resell. Most of us have a portfolio of terrible names (I also did at the start and even some poor names now). I will therefore do two things (free). I will select some interesting recent sales so we can all observe them and learn from them.

2. If you also did sell a name (even if its $0.5), you are free to post it and then I will review that sale too.

3. Sorry, we won't be reviewing good/bad names here. The other domaining thread is good for that.

4. I will post one currently unregistered domain name that has potentials. Buy at your own risk. I will advise you to undertake due diligence before buying.

5. If there is a coupon somewhere, I will post such nice offers.

What to do when you have nothing to do (jobless) #1

In our Dollars and Nigerians series, I refrain from pushing out make money tips etc. The foundation of financial freedom is NOT in what to do (money making opportunities), but rather in what you know, your depth of knowledge, your interest (passion) in that industry, and your skills.

When you have nothing to do but have enough data in GBs, you should -

1. Be a Youtube learner. Quit visiting gossip vlogs. There is so much you can learn on Youtube than almost anywhere else in the world. You can learn anything. I learnt how to rig up solar power systems from Youtube and a few other details were picked from other sites. There are videos to learn programming, dancing, ....

2. Be a Youtube learner ....

3. Be a Youtube learner ....

That is one tip enough to spark something up in you. Think of any business or job title you love, head over to Youtube and find out all about it. You may end up having something to do after sometime.

Flippa options
1. Post the domain in classifieds - free
2. Post the domain as auction - $9
3. Domain is in classified, and you get an offer (even if it is $1 offer for it) - sell at that $1 or reject the $1 offer and state your offer; else you can then start an auction (free).

Hope that answers your question D.

good day guys i'm new to domain biz, first i want to greet all the ogas here, you guys are doing a great job! grin i have being following this thread for a while in order to understand this domain flipping business. and now i need some help.. i listed a domain on flippa and i haven't received any offer up until now, i have only had 11 views. i used the free listing. i am not sure if flippa is a good domain market. i tried registering on sedo but they have blocked my account. please some one should tell me which domain flipping market is easier to register. i know some of us use sedo please share with me how you registered your account with out being blocked. thank you grin
Am not sure why Sedo blocked you. Try it again. Maybe you can create another gmail or so account, don't use proxy etc (not sure if that can be a problem), use a different browser from the one you used earlier on etc.

I can assure you that listing in Sedo or Flippa isn't a guarantee that you would get offers. If you can, post the domain name so we can know what the issue(s) are.

Maybe I will make a list of domain marketplaces, but if you have read this thread from the start (that's some task but it is worthwhile) you would see many. Namepros is another place - but as a new user on the site, I doubt if you can just post a domain.

It is killing productivity. It took me more than one month to open a business bank account. And now I must look for a way to pay and do tax returns every month whether I am here or not.

I almost lost an important discussion this morning - why? My phone which had full network on was telling the other parties "not available". Had to restart, reset, ... meanwhile they were sending emails about inability to reach me.

Same with the Internet, you pay for provider A, B, C... yet they are all the same. What about PHCN? One of the most expensive tarriffs in Africa and yet they are as effective as a gramophone without winding.

When are we going to stop learning to live with S&^#*T? That (those) demons must die. I am fed up.

Wow... Interesting!!! Most domainers place emphasis on those criterion like their domaining life depended on it.

What SET OF RULES do you use in choosing this business like domains, mind mentioning a fewhuh

I meant i couldn't find business-like domains on namecheap!
I am not saying those metrics are wrong or unimportant, but its just that we can't all be the same. To your question, we have about 39 factors we consider before deciding if a domain name is a good candidate for a business name. By business, the scope includes brick and mortar (physical) businesses, cyber businesses, and even blogs.

A few are basic common sense rules - no misspellings, simple, short (meaning not tooooo long), meaningful to the market, no unexpected meanings (you can suddenly find your nice domain have a 'hidden' sex word in it) etc.

Of course you need it to include industry keywords. If you want to start a dating service and you have a domain StartFlirting.com, doesn't it rock? I posted three domains a few days ago - startflirting.com, secretalarm.com and dailytradesignals.com. They were all available on the 9th. Few minutes later, two of them were gone, registered by some smart investors or users.

TheHairshop.com was just sold for $20,000. I am sure you see the point with business related domain names.

I am currently dueling with one dude from Asia, I noticed he was picking up .biz names which I was also interested in. That is his own strategy. He only does .biz and I can tell you he has a good cache of those. The problem is when someone finds a way of doing a thing and sells as a holy grail in ebooks, products etc. Then everyone picks on that track and beat it bare.

If you are a business lover, it won't be hard for you to spot and select business names.

I planted yesterday ...

What you sow, you reap is one cliche almost every Nigerian know in one form or the other. But do we know that applies to business, dollar making and getting out of poverty?

Let me break it down.

You are sowing / have sowed by:

1. Coming online to research information about making things better for you
2. Choosing to read this piece
3. Taking the bits of action suggested such as reading business magazines
4. Focusing on the how of good products rather than amassing them alone
5. Opening up an ideas book
6. Conceiving an idea a day
7. Writing down your daily idea(s)
8. Following this thread

These seemingly little acts are the pillars on which your dollar making career will rest. For those who did even four of the eight things I listed am sure they will testify they are better for it, and that is on a short term. The longterm rewards are surely going to be more.

If you need any information as a result of reading this, you can ask. If it is within my means I will get it to you.

"Shap Shap" won't work

Earlier on I asked "What is your idea today?". I had an idea which I shared, an idea to help young people make their first legitimate dollar online. I have a rough sketch of how I might go on to run that. But in studying Nairalanders, I observe that a substantial segment are interested in an instant "grabbable" opportunity, a make money today sort of thing. That is fine, but we can not build a significant empire on such ideals.

That is why we all tend to do the same thing, and do it in the same way. We all blog often without a clear perspective of what we are set to do, and we all blog the same things. Such narrowness bars from reaping maximum benefits and values from endeavours.

Therefore I want to challenge anyone who is interested in dollars to desire NOT to follow the fold but to step up and use the same basic thing to do something different.

Please can you explain the concept of backordering. What is the procedure like? How is it done. Thanks
After registering a domain name, the buyer must repeat the payment yearly. If after one year buyer doesn't pay the domain renewal fees, the name will eventually be withdrawn and then it is open for anyone to register.

But then many other parties may be interested in acquiring that name especially if it has some value. So they move on to backorder it before it gets deleted. Backordering it is like fighting to be the first to grab the name.

Don't forget to share what you know with others - freely you get, freely you should give (even if you paid to get it)

Secret alarm, start flirting look good. For acnadian drugs I'd look it up on Google first.

So for this domains, would you just go & reg them without checking Traffic, Pager rank, No of Backlinks, Alexa rank, Global monthly searches using Google keywords tool etc and other important info about the domain?

I've looked up Namecheap, their domains don't meet my search criteria. next step for me now is to probably start backordering through drop catch or pheenix..

Looking forward to your reply, Cheers!
You won't believe I don't do all those traffic, PR, ... stuff. The main thing I am concerned about is ensuring it is a sweet domain name, and that it has not been used in spamming etc. Maybe it is because we deal with strictly business names. Also I have a mind tuned to and use a set of rules to choose names.

That acnadian name to me is a bad name. I added it to illustrate a point.

I don't understand your point at Namecheap. I hope you aren't referring to their market. I only said to use namecheap to register .com domains at normal prices and not buying premium names there.

Why do you want to backorder? If it is not a domain name that will end up as thousands of dollars worth, I don't think backordering is a great idea. There are so many good names that you can get through other means.
