What is your idea today?

What is an idea? It is any conception existing in the mind as a result of mental understanding, awareness, or activity. I have talked about the need to read magazines and listed some magazines that Nigerian youths need to know of and read. I have written about the need for ideas and how to become an idea farmer.

Needless to say that there are people who are farmers of bad ideas, ideas which damage the society and make other people live in misery. ideas that promote pain, and spread destruction, that reduces the value of human life and sometimes terminates the soul or physical body. We do not need such ideas. As you go on to the dollar trail, decide not to be a "bad idea" entrepreneur (drugs, prostitution, fraud, and other vicepreneurial activities).

As the day starts and goes by, use your mind to examine the events and situations around you. Do this as you read the stories and articles in the magazine. Is there anything that you can borrow? Is there anything that catch your interest? Is there anything you like in any of those stories?

Have an idea book. I have several. I am at a loss because I left some of mine some thousands of miles across the world. I simply hope and pray that I will be able to get them back. Write down your ideas or jot them down on your phone. Use Colornote. Use Evernote. Jot down your ideas as you sit alone, as you chat with friends, while in church ... Ideas come anywhere and anytime. Create a book for your ideas.

Those Americans rule the world because they know how to study their environment and provide what is missing or what will be loved, then they go all out and make it look like something God forgot to create, something God should have created. They are that pushful. That is what we need to do as young Nigerians.

What is my own idea today?
My idea is to help some young people make their first dollar online. I can't specifically remember where the first dollar I made online came from, pardon me. Some things just don't get space in my mind. But it was made either via Fiverr or via Godaddy domain sales. Although before that I had lost several opportunities.

Does anyone remember when there no Mastercards in Nigeria? When you could not even pay for domain names - not one single bank could help you? Those were the days of the lost opportunities. For all young people at this time, you have the greatest opportunities anyone has ever had in this nation. Quit your slumber and let's get on to work.

Also, I'm a newbie. Just started domaining late last month & am yet to develop a well defined strategy. Only stuff I do now is pick expiring domains on expireddomains.net and re-register but its damn expensive! Am only doing that cos I read hand regged don't do so well.

I am confident when the problem is getting great domain names for your business/investing, when it comes to sales, I am not 'confident'. All I do is list the names on the various aftermarket platforms. But if you are a more aggressive domainer who pushes names on various forums and through emails then you can be sure you will do very well if you have the skill to choose the right names.

"Hand regged" isn't the problem, bad names are. Let me give you examples of these names. Tell me which are likely to do well or not.
DailyTradeSignals.com? StartFlirting.com? SecretAlarm.com? and Acnadiandrugs.com? All these names are dropped names.

Each of these names except one is worth at least $399. And each is sold for about $10. I will advise you take time to develop your own approach to choosing names and even the type of names you will be stocking.

On the $5 reg, Namecheap still sold at $5 yesterday but the sale is off now. Godaddy has coupons for .99, 2.99, and $5. You can only use these coupons once.

Let me help with both questions you've posted which apparently has not been replied.
1. You will have to pay domain renewal charges every year on each domain you own. Failure to pay the renewal will lead to the name dropping. Anyone is free to buy the name at that point.

2. How much will it cost to build a website ... It depends. Could be as low as free if you get someone who wants to help you. Averagely it seems its 10k upwards. However, don't go around saying someone said websites are designed for 10k. Personally, I won't design a site for 10k, or even for 25k. So its relative.

I can point you to where you can get sites developed for cheap but I won't. I prefer you to take time to read through all that has been posted by the knowledgeable persons on this thread so you won't waste your money and valuable foreign exchange. When you have read it and understood all, ask questions and more questions. Then you will know what are the best strategies to pursue.

@CPriest it seems u understand this game very well. What got me is where you mentioned registering a domain with $5. Which registrar offers $5 to register? because i know that godaddy will not give you less than $13 and on discount of 35% not less than $10.69.
What i have noticed in this domain business is when buying, Nigerian bank will charge you 220 per dollar, but when receiving, you are paid at the rate of 180 per dollar.
So you can pay $10 to buy and if sell $12, you are the one loosing. But all the same it is very interesting business

To get .com at under $10, look out for coupons and promocodes. Namecheap still sold .com at $5.9 yesterday. But I checked now and seems they are back to $9.66. That said, why would you buy at $10 and sell $12? I hope I have not confused you into thinking domain reseller business?

What I meant is this, if there is a .com name you can handregister e.g namingguru.com and you register it at $5.9, then someone comes around saying they want it, you can sell it at $349 - that is Sedo's valuation. But if I would value it, I will say start at $500-$1500. Why? Because estateguru.com sold at $3500 and helpguru.com sold at 2,500 Euros.

So even if they exchange at N150, you have made over 300 times profit. Sadly though you may wait for a long time sometimes before someone offers to buy your domain name.

Entrepreneurs sometimes do not come up with earth shaking ideas. Indians are taking our Okada model and turning it into the next big thing for solving their transportation problems.

Why am I interested in this? Several years back I discussed a similar idea with some guys but we never did anything. Have we done something like this in Nigeria? No. Do we need it yes! Anyone interested in learning more?

Well, some of the excuses may be genuine, but then we are talking dollars here and not "why I can't make dollars". Therefore the real ideas are those that THE IDEA-OWNER CAN GET TO WORK ON.

Ok. I want to earn dollars, I need ideas that will fetch me dollars, and that idea must be workable and possible. What do I do if I don't have any idea?

In my opinion, ideas are not hard to come by. Good ideas though may be a bit harder to birth. How can you become an idea farmer? In my early days, I felt that money need not be begged for, you either steal it or make it. Shortly afterwards, I told my friends money need not be stolen, why? Because the richest thief in town isn't the richest person in town.

Life gravitated me towards books and resources such as Lee Harvey Day's Dynamic laws of success etc. Success Digest of those early years reviewed books and so I could get a precis of expensive books I otherwise wasn't able to afford. With time, as it is written that great minds think alike, I started thinking the way great minds thought. Ideas started flowing. I wasn't taking my ideas as being great ideas until I started seeing products that were based one exactly the same idea.

Let me give you an example. One day while idling about and observing a pile of my mothers shoes, it suddenly flashed in my mind that glass would be a nice material for a shoe sole. That was in primary four or so. Not too long aftwerwards, I saw heeled slippers with glass-like soles.

It seems as you give your interest and thinking to observing and considering productive enterprises, appreciating the thinking behind good products and services, your thinking is also elevated. When in situations where things could be done in a better way or when a solution is needed, your mind is then able to use prevous knowledge to come up with an alternative out - and that is what is called an idea. Now this is my own philosophy about a way to make people ideate. There are experts in that area and major thinkers too, but will you take kindly to my sending you to volumes of books to read before been able to come up with an idea? There simply is no time for that.

So the simple way to be able to generate good ideas as a young Nigerian is to soak yourself in finding out, and appreciating the great solutions others have created. Don't be one of those who want the latest smartphone and app but has never thought about what could be done to make that smartphone better; nor appreciated the thinking that went to making that particular smartphone.

What legal ways exist for educated young people to earn dollars?

The passion, organization, versatility, and creativity of these Americans never cease to amaze me and I love them. From my days in sec. school when I read up decades old Byte magazines, to months old Inc. magazine and Entrepreneur mag I managed to get from vendors under the various bridges in Lagos, my desire has been to come up with ideas that will match and possibly beat those I read about.

1. Are you a software developer yourself? Are you a programmer?
2. Do you have a particular field/industry in mind? Don't start if you don't.
3. Do you have any ideas / knowledge in that area? If I will develop image analysis software I need to have the technical knowhow of the science and the market in that area.
4. Do I have a market? Infact that should be number one.

It is surely possible to start a software company. Anyone can. The question you should ask is "can I start a SUCCESSFUL software company next year"?

1. Use your normal Internet connection.
2. Use the registrar (domain company) that offers you the cheapest for the TLD (domain extension) you are interested in. Google for coupons too. If I need a .biz domain name, I get it where .biz names are going for $3. If I need a .us domain name, I get it where .us is currently cheapest. Hope you get it. Same for .com
3. Like any business, you are free to invest. But like any business too, you may loose money. SO be cautious.

My advice to you is - head over to Sedo and Flippa. Check out their recently sold names list. Study it daily for as long as you can. Then headover to Godaddy or Name.com imagine domain names YOU will love to buy. Type it in and search if they are available. Most of the names will be unavailable. This excercise is just for you to have a feel of what names are cool and likely to be in demand.

When you finally go hunting, you will notice worthy names (since you have experienced those already registered). In short you need to be able to appraise names if you will succeed in this venture.

Bro. I just bought a domain via expired auction. I got charged 10 dollar for the domain & 15 more for so called .COM DOMAIN RENEWAL making everything 25 freaking dollars for just 1 domain.

Am I on the right track? Is this what you get charged too, cos when I reg domains via closeout or deleted.com its normal 8 or 9$.

I will advise you to be careful with this strategy. I also started on that path ($69 for dropping auctions). With your $25, you can get (i.e register) 3 or 4 .com domains with each worth at least $250 in the aftermarket. You can get nTLDs etc which will be worth $$$$ in the aftermarket. Let me give an example, funding.asia was valued by Sedo at $8999. And how much did my business obtain it for? Lesser than that.

Change your track. Think up good names, research very well. Understand what makes a domain valuable (basically its demand for the keyword s in the name and its length etc), and then take smart risks.

I spent 8 hours everyday (sometimes a whole night) studying deleted domain names and searching (manually) through millions of deleted names. That was about 6 years or so back. It paid off. This business is like prospecting diamonds. It's tough but it works.

When next you have $25 to spend, give me $20, and I will fish out one name you can register for $5 which will be worth a 100 times your $5.

I have no experience with numerics, I don't even own one of those again (had 0123.biz sometimes back). In most cases you can't just put domains on auction. In Flippa, you have to pay to auction it, same in Sedo. However, if you receive an offer after listing (which is free), you can push it to auction (and free too).

When you are buying names, think about what you as a person can do with the name. If you can't think up three or more things that can be done with it, you may need to reconsider.

Yugovy.com is nice, if you can create such and even better names than that, you may be able to sell to startup entrepreneurs because meaningless names are a fad. Check out brandbucket etc for such names.

If you will do .xyz and other new TLDs, make sure you go for very strong keywords. Possibly single-word (there are several singlewords still up now). I had shipper.xyz in my cart before it was snatched by the unscrupulous whois I used for research. Got compute.xyz (cloud services can use this, any online service dealing with numbers etc can also use that) and many others.

If you can, and if you have the funds to purchase and maintain, stick to .com names. I feel there are more bad names than good names in the hands of most domainers. You can check godaddy auction and see names / the interest each generate.
