Another Nigerian Army Officer Shot Dead

According to a wireless communication seen by Peoples Gazette, Abbas Fatai, a military officer of the 16 Brigade in Yenagoa, was shot dead by suspected members of the Icelanders cult group.

According to preliminary army investigations, Mr Fatai was shot dead at Igbogene Junction in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, where he resided, at around 09:12 p.m. on July 22.

The officer was ambushed and shot by a cult lead by a man named Confidence, who was then brought to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“Suspected members of Icelanders cult group led by one Mr Confidence attacked and shot 08NA/61/2298 CPL Abbas Fatai of 16 Brigade at Igbogene Junction in Yenagoa LGA of Bayelsa State,” the message read in part.

Mr Fatai’s body has been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, according to the army, which has also initiated a manhunt for the accused.

Butswat Asinim, the state police command’s spokesperson, did not respond to The Gazette’s request for comment on the officer’s death.

Hassan Ahmed, a Nigerian Army general, was killed by gunmen on the Abuja-Lokoja expressway on July 15.

Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director, Army Public Relations, issued a statement announcing Mr. Ahmed’s death.

The Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, has threatened to give his deputy, Mahdi Aliyu, “the treatment he deserves” if he dares him.



The gap appears to be widening between Matawalle and Aliyu, after the governor dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Aliyu has refused to follow Matawalle to APC and even addressed a rally of the PDP, the platform that brought the two of them to power, to reaffirm his loyalty to the party.

His decision has left Matawalle unimpressed. He told the Hausa Service of Deutsch Welle on Saturday, that he was getting fed up with Aliyu’s disrespectful attitude.



“I won’t join issues with him. But if he dares me, I will give him the treatment he deserves,” Matawalle said, hours after the State House of Assembly invited Aliyu to come and explain why he held the rally without considering the current security situation in Zamfara State and ”in disrespect of advice by the security authorities in the state.”

There are suspicions that the House of Assembly’s summons may be the first step by the legislative arm towards impeaching Aliyu.

The legislators have already switched camps from the PDP to the APC.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s nominee as Independent National Electoral Commission’s job, Lauretta Onochie on Thursday, disowned the All Progressive Congress.

Grilled and accused of being partisan and a member of the APC, Onochie, while answering questions before lawmakers during the screening exercise, said she only came under attacks because she is “Madam Due Process.”

“Since Buhari was elected as president for the second term, I have removed myself from everything about politics.

“Since 2019, I don’t have anything to do with politics. As I am sitting down here, I am not a member of any political party in this country.” She said

While senators such as Opeyemi Bamidele spoke in support of her nomination, the likes of Ike Ekweremadu urged Onochie to reject her nomination.

Certificate Forgery: Court Rules in Favour of Ex-Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday ruled in favour of the former Finance Minister, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, saying she did not need the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate in order to take up any ministerial appointment or before standing for any elective office in the country.

Justice Taiwo Oladipupo Taiwo held that Adeosun who graduated in a London University in 1989 was already 36 years of age, therefore, exempted from participating in the NYSC scheme.
